Objective. Supervised learning paradigms are often limited by the amount of labeled data that is available. This phenomenon is particularly problematic in clinically-relevant data, such as electroencephalography (EEG), where labeling can be costly in terms of specialized expertise and human processing time. Consequently, deep learning architectures designed to learn on EEG data have yielded relatively shallow models and performances at best similar to those of traditional feature-based approaches. However, in most situations, unlabeled data is available in abundance. By extracting information from this unlabeled data, it might be possible to reach competitive performance with deep neural networks despite limited access to labels. Approach. We investigated self-supervised learning (SSL), a promising technique for discovering structure in unlabeled data, to learn representations of EEG signals. Specifically, we explored two tasks based on temporal context prediction as well as contrastive predictive coding on two clinically-relevant problems: EEG-based sleep staging and pathology…

This paper presents the building blocks of a comprehensive framework for the typological study of linguistic adaptation, i.e. how languages change in relation to the socio-historical and environmental contexts in which they are used. We showcase a battery of concepts and methods that are geared towards systematically comparing sociolinguistic environments and linguistic structures through the study of communities in social contact. We show that these concepts and methods can be used to investigate sociolinguistic correlates of linguistic diversity and language change in at least three ways: (1) to unravel causal factors related to language change, (2) to create datasets simultaneously addressing selection of communities, sociolinguistic features, and linguistic features, and (3) to formulate generalizations from empirically-grounded cross-cultural and cross-linguistic comparisons.

This chapter introduces the innovative educational programme LILIEMA, a repertoire-based and language-independent method for achieving and nurturing culturally anchored literacy in multilingual contexts. Unique in kind, LILIEMA is the first programme that introduces literacy not based on a particular language but by drawing on the entire repertoire of learners present in the classroom. The flexible and adaptive design principle underpinning the method is inspired by multilingual oral and written communicative practices that are widespread throughout West Africa. LILIEMA has been jointly created, piloted and further developed by us – a team of teachers, trainers, researchers and community members from the Global South and the Global North. We introduce the motivations for developing LILIEMA, present the syllabus and teaching materials of the method and describe its implementation in the Casamance region in southern Senegal, drawing on examples from LILIEMA classrooms. We end the chapter by making a case for its potential to contribute to the attainment of the Sustainable Development…

Introduction: mobility and informalityMobility and migration increased rapidly following the end of the Cold War period and the collapse of communist regimes. These developments led to the emergence of new national, regional and international mobility regimes (e.g., the Commonwealth of Independent States, the European Union and the Eurasian Economic Union). These newly established mobility regimes-encompassing visa regulations, union regulations, refugee politics, labour market regulations, migration regulations and capital globalisation-rendered these nation-states visible in new ways and placed state-society relations at the centre of popular discussions (Schiller and Salazar 2013) .For many travellers, mobile workers, migrants, refugees and other mobile entrepreneurs moving beyond their hometown or country, these new mobility experiences and strategies generated new challenges, hardships and uncertainties. The social and kinship networks, which served as alternative (to the state's) welfare structures in their home countries, were no longer available in their host countries, leaving…

Background Type 1 diabetes (T1D) is an autoimmune disease affecting individuals in the early years of life. Although previous studies have identified genetic loci influencing T1D diagnosis age, these studies did not investigate the genome with high resolution. Objective and methods We performed a genome-wide meta-analysis for age at diagnosis with cohorts from Finland (Finnish Diabetic Nephropathy Study), the United Kingdom (UK Genetic Resource Investigating Diabetes) and Sardinia. Through SNP associations, transcriptome-wide association analysis linked T1D diagnosis age and gene expression. Results We identified two chromosomal regions associated with T1D diagnosis age: multiple independent variants in the HLA region on chromosome 6 and a locus on chromosome 17q12. We performed gene-level association tests with transcriptome prediction models from two whole blood datasets, lymphocyte cell line, spleen, pancreas and small intestine tissues. Of the non-HLA genes, lower PNMT expression in whole blood, and higher IKZF3 and ZPBP2, and lower ORMDL3 and GSDMB transcription levels in…

The purpose of this article is to report on a study exploring the sustainability work (i.e.,practices and pedagogies related to sustainability education) of Finnish early childhood education and care (ECEC) teaching practice settings. Recently, the early years and ECEC have gained increasing attention in sustainability education matters. Educational policy for ECEC has been developed through legislation and renewed curricula for the early years. Research on how sustainability is implemented in ECEC settings as well as in Finnish teacher education is still sparse, but indicates there is a policy-practice gap. The study was conducted in collaboration with municipal ECEC teams (n=34) in teaching practice settings (n=11) in the Helsinki metropolitan area. Data was collected using the Assessment Tool for Promoting Sustainability in ECEC(PROSUS) by Furu & Valkonen (2020). The results show that there is great variability in terms of extent and depth in how sustainability work is carried out by the settings. In general, social-cultural issues are addressed at greaterdepth than ecological…

In Finland the education system and teacher training programs have been under a reform during the past decade. All policy documents on the field of early childhood education have been renewed and this has had its influence on the teaching training practices and teachers’ work as well. Teachers are challenged to implement pedagogical methods to support children to become active agents of their learning. Further, also teachers should act as active agents in their professional development. Finnish teachers’ competences and quality of the teaching are defined in recent policy documents that introduce the future competences of teachers, including expertise agency and innovative approach. The aim of this research is to understand and critically evaluate the teacher’s agency and agentic approach of these recent policy documents through thematic content analysis. In total three policy documents were analyzed. As our theoretical frame we describe the agentic and life-long-learning approach in the educational context. We explain the Finnish early childhood education context and current…

The lack of standardised assessment of evolutionary knowledge and acceptance of evolution across Europe makes comparisons between studies difficult. The Evolution Education Questionnaire on Acceptance and Knowledge (EEQ) was constructed to measure attitudes and understanding across Europe and beyond. We aimed to compile a brief instrument to allow for easy application in school and university. The target group of the EEQ was freshman university students who had just finished their secondary education. However, several components of the questionnaire were developed and validated for additional target groups. Therefore, this questionnaire may, in addition, be suitable for students in secondary school, in-service teachers as well as the general public. This method report describes the contents and application of the EEQ and provides information on survey conduction, data preparation, analyses and interpretation of results to serve as a standardised and ready-to- use protocol to measure the acceptance of and knowledge about evolution in a local, national or international context. Abstract Background Psychological distress refers to non-specific symptoms of stress, anxiety and depression, and it is more common in women. Our aim was to investigate factors contributing to psychological distress in the working population, with a special reference to gender differences. Methods We used questionnaire data from the nationally representative Finnish Regional Health and Well-being Study (ATH) collected in the years 2012–2016 (target population participants aged 20 +, n = 96,668, response rate 53%), restricting the current analysis to those persons who were working full-time and under 65 of age (n = 34,468). Psychological distress was assessed using the Mental Health Inventory-5 (MHI-5) (cut-off value <=52). We studied the following factors potentially associated with psychological distress: sociodemographic factors, living alone, having children under18 years of age, lifestyle-related factors, social support, helping others outside of the home and work-related factors. We used logistic regression analysis to examine association between having work-family conflict…

Autonomous driving is challenging in adverse road and weather conditions in which there might not be lane lines, the road might be covered in snow and the visibility might be poor. We extend the previous work on end-to-end learning for autonomous steering to operate in these adverse real-life conditions with multimodal data. We collected 28 hours of driving data in several road and weather conditions and trained convolutional neural networks to predict the car steering wheel angle from front-facing color camera images and lidar range and reflectance data. We compared the CNN model performances based on the different modalities and our results show that the lidar modality improves the performances of different multimodal sensor-fusion models. We also performed on-road tests with different models and they support this observation.

Finnish legislation and policy on early childhood education and care (ECEC) express sustainability as a basic value. The national core curricula state that, during their years in ECEC, all children have the right to develop necessary values, knowledge and skills for living a sustainable life. Furthermore, early years education should be permeated by the principles of sustainability. However, research suggests that there is unclarity concerning how sustainability can be implemented in practice and pedagogy (Repo et al., 2018; 2019; Furu, forthcoming). Hence, the aim of this study was to explore how sustainability is currently done in ECEC settings in Finland. Further, we wanted to look into how the use of the recently developed Assessment Tool for Promotion of Sustainability in ECEC (PROSUS) by Furu and Valkonen (2020) might enhance sustainability work among teams (n=15) in ECEC settings in Finland. Based upon the findings, sustainability education is understood and implemented variably by the teams. This indicates that children are provided unequal opportunities for developing the…

A set of experimental study sites was established to monitor greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from drained peatland forests under different harvesting regimes in Finland. The purpose of these experimental sites is to study the effects of continuous cover forestry (CCF) and clear-cutting (CC) on ecosystem processes including GHG emissions and stand development on drained peatland forests. The sites represent fertile Norway spruce dominated peatland forests, where soil GHG emissions are high due to drainage that has exposed peat to decomposition in aerobic conditions. Two “flagship” sites for greenhouse gas (GHG) monitoring have been established and instrumented by the Natural Resources Institute Finland (Luke), University of Helsinki (UH) and the Finnish Meteorological Institute (FMI). The sites host continuous GHG monitoring with Eddy Covariance (EC) towers and with automatic chambers. In addition, greenhouse gas (CO2, CH4, and N2O) emissions are monitored with manually operated chambers at four sites, where effects of selection (CCF) harvests are studied with replicated treatments.…

Official police records and victimisation surveys are two focal sources of information on domestic violence (DV). Police data inform us about the incidents that come to the attention of the law enforcement authorities. Population-based surveys offer estimates on total prevalence of victimisation, its characteristics, and combined with police data, on official social control and the proportion of hidden crime. Internationally, there is great variation in both the quality and availability of police data concerning DV, as well as concerning measures and the mere existence of victimisation studies. One of the first tasks in the IMPRODOVA project was to create a map of this variation by examining the properties and availability of data sources across partner countries. The results indicate substantial deficiencies in data sources, the foremost problem being the lack of nationally representative and regularly repeated victimisation surveys. Concerning police data, regionally separate information systems and the potential unreliability of the data present the biggest challenges for…

Quantum Speed Limit and Divisibility of the Dynamical Map

The quantum speed limit (QSL) is the theoretical lower limit of the time for a quantum system to evolve from a given state to another one. Interestingly, it has been shown that non-Markovianity can be used to speed-up the dynamics and to lower the QSL time, although this behaviour is not universal. In this paper, we further carry on the investigation on the connection between QSL and non-Markovianity by looking at the effects of P- and CP-divisibility of the dynamical map to the quantum speed limit. We show that the speed-up can also be observed under P- and CP-divisible dynamics, and that the speed-up is not necessarily tied to the transition from P-divisible to non-P-divisible dynamics.

The paper identifies the enablers (drivers) and inhibitors (barriers) influencing e-customs implementation in Vietnam (known as a developing country with a lower technological environment) along with determining the impact of e-customs on firm performance. The survey was conducted with the representatives (managers) of firms in five cities and provinces dominating Vietnam’s international trade. The data was analyzed using structural equation modeling (SEM). The findings show two significant drivers (enablers) - relative advantages and national culture, while compatibility and ease of use are the barriers. Previous studies showed that cultural dimensions related to ‘uncertainty acceptance’ and ‘individualism’ encourage innovation; however, this paper demonstrates that ‘uncertainty avoidance’ and ‘collectivism’ promote e-customs deployment in Vietnam. Previously, Vietnamese culture was known for scoring high on cultural dimensions related to ‘power distance’ and ‘short-term orientation’. However, today, as an emerging country, Vietnamese has switched to ‘low distance’ and ‘long-term…

Smartphone Transnationalism in Non-Western Migration Regimes : Transnational Ethnography of Uzbek Migrant Workers in Russia

There is an extensive research that explores the reproduction of transnational communities and relations, with a particular focus on locality, identity and culture. However, the existing research emanates from the case studies of immigrant communities in Western-type democracies, while we know little about migrant transnationalism in non-Western migration regimes such as Russia, where migrant workers are subjected to numerous human rights abuses and cannot publicly and overtly engage in transnational practices. Moreover, the role of new media, such as smartphones and social media, in migrant transnationalism remains under-researched. Given the socio-political and cultural differences between Western and post-Soviet societies, we cannot assume that the methodological tools and theoretical perspectives developed in Western contexts are necessarily applicable to Russia, where the repressive socio-political environment, the lack of democratic culture and arbitrary law enforcement leave little room for migrant legalization, transnational activism and collective mobilization. The above…

Chapter 10 explores the extent to which Indigenous communities participate in the transition to renewable energy in the Arctic region. Using the concept of energy justice, this chapter provides legal and empirical arguments to demonstrate the need to consider energy justice in order to ensure that the transition to renewable energy in the Arctic region addresses the rights of Indigenous peoples. In so doing, the authors outline the importance of renewable energy as a means to achieving sustainable development and to fulfilling human rights in accordance with the international commitments of Arctic states adopted under the auspices of the 2030 Agenda and the Sustainable Development Goals in 2015. Second, the chapter outlines the broader contexts and corresponding patterns of renewable energy development in the Arctic. Against this backdrop, the chapter examines the actual state of play of the energy transition and its impact on Indigenous peoples in the Arctic based on illustrative examples. For this purpose, the chapter includes examples from Canada, Alaska, Russia, and in the…

This chapter employs the concept of transnational social space to examine Central Asian female migrants’ relationship with the law in Russia. Through exploring life stories of four migrant women, we examine the formation of transnational social spaces for labour migrants in Russia from the perspective of gender. The results demonstrate the significance of the tradition and practices of the sending countries in the formation of Central Asian female migrants’ transnational social spaces and subsequent legal choices in Russia. We raise the question regarding agency-focused transnationalism as an overarching perspective in the study of labour migrants in Russia. The revolving door migration between Central Asia and Russia, a lack of social capital and financial resources, their dependent position within migrant communities and strict family traditions limit the real agency of many female migrants, which the concept of transnational social space assumes. We argue that vulnerable migrant groups such as women often do not fit into transnationalism, informality or legal culture narratives…

To support university students’ learning, teaching should build on students’ prior knowledge. Therefore, teachers need skills to pay attention to students’ knowledge in teaching-learning situations. Teachers’ underlying conceptual knowledge affects the way they see and interpret situations in classrooms, which is called professional vision. This study examined university teachers’ (N = 53 from different faculties, current and future faculty) professional vision and misconceptions from the perspective of the role of prior knowledge in learning, when watching and interpreting short videos of teaching-learning situations at the start of and after a short pedagogical training. Additionally, participants’ conceptions, beliefs and approaches to teaching and learning were investigated with a questionnaire. The results show that before the training, there were differences between the teachers from different faculties, but after the training all the teachers scored better in their professional vision concerning prior knowledge. Prospective teachers’ professional vision developed even more…

Satisfaction with teaching career was positively related to teacher efficacy, satisfaction with teacher education and ability to control a class, and negatively with job stress, and academic knowledge test score in the teacher education entrance examination. Entrance examination success did not guarantee graduation and the academically strongest students were not the most satisfied with the teaching profession. In addition, we found statistically significant differences between the three identified teacher motivation groups:…

The vulnerability of northern European vegetation to ozone damage in a changing climate. An assessment based on current knowledge

The potential vulnerability of vegetation at northern latitudes to ozone damage was assessed based on current knowledge with regard to air ozone concentrations and leaf ozone uptake as well as to plant traits affecting ozone tolerance. The focus was on the northern European arctic, alpine and northern boreal vegetation zones, with a special focus on high-altitude vegetation. In particular, we analysed if there are increasing risks for ozone impacts on northern vegetation due to high spring ozone concentrations in relation to climate change induced shifts such as e.g. an earlier start of the growing season. The current state of knowledge implies that ecosystems in the far north are not more susceptible to ozone than vegetation in other parts of Europe. Hence, we cannot advocate for a stronger reduction of ozone precursors emissions based exclusively on the ozone sensitivity of vegetation in the far north. Thus, policies designed to reduce emissions of ozone precursors to protect vegetation in other parts of Europe as well as in the entire northern hemisphere are likely to suffice to…

Co-producing drinking water in rural Ethiopia: Governmentality in the name of community management
Linda Annala

Show abstractHide abstract
In rural drinking water governance, the reliance on community management has permeated development programmes and water policies for decades. Moving away from a community-centric view, this paper expands the focus to a broader landscape in order to investigate how the state, citizens and other non-state actors co-produce drinking water in the Amhara region of Ethiopia. The study seeks to understand what kinds of power relations are being (re)produced among co-producing actors through the discourse of community management. The conceptualisation of power relations is undertaken by employing Foucault’s governmentality perspective. As its empirical material, besides an examination of policy documents, the study utilises interviews with community Water, Sanitation and Hygiene Committees (WASHCOs), woreda (district) and regional water officials, private suppliers, NGO representatives, artisans and other actors. As a conceptual contribution, the paper makes power visible in the otherwise depoliticised literature of co-production. For governments and development practitioners, the study…

Lobbauksessa keskeistä on vaikuttaa prosessin varhaiseen valmisteluvaiheeseen. Epävirallisten vaikutuskanavien kautta tapahtuvasta lobbauksesta etenkin ei-julkinen…

The Corporeality of Sound and Movement in Performance
Ako Mashino, Elina Seye

Show abstractHide abstract
We create music and dance with the body and perceive both through it. The performer's body is moulded by the practice of music and/or dance, transforming it into a body with specific structure, competencies, and consciousness. The body of a performer is thus not any human body but a cultural body with particular physical skills and a heightened awareness of corporeality. Furthermore, dance and music often occur simultaneously and can intertwine to the point of being inseparable. Even when music occurs without dance, body movement is still involved in its performance, and dancers may also produce sound. This article investigates the bodily basis of music and dance as well as the significance of human corporeality in choreomusical interrelations. Drawing from interdisciplinary perspectives, it presents a cross-cultural approach for choreomusical analysis that does not a priori divide music and dance into two separate categories, but proceeds from the corporeal practices of music making and dancing.

Espoon ulkosaaristossa, 28.8. Pohjois-Kirkkonummella, 11.9. Itä-Helsingin saaristossa ja 11.9. Helsingissä Laajalahdella. Loput järistykset olivat näiden hyvin pieniä esi- ja…

Educational Equity in the sphere of Bildung? The alternative case for Waldorf education

Inclusive and equitable quality education is one of the Sustainable Development Goals ratified by the General Assembly in 2015. The principle that equity is provided through education has become one of the key values that govern policy in education systems worldwide. This article problematise the development of politicised and instrumental use of equity in educational policies. We argue that the politicised use of equity has entailed instrumentalisation of education, whereby fundamental pedagogical ideals and humane values have been delimited and lost. The politicised rhetorical use of “educational equity” is in the article scrutinised through the lens of Bildung and the didactics of Waldorf education. We suggest that the didactical practices established in Waldorf schools exemplify an education that operates according to a broader principle of equity, including “spaces for becoming” and subjectification. The article summons up, suggesting that it is a crucial issue for the future of a democratic and equal society that teaching in schools rests up such a border understanding of…

The Desired Darkness of the Ancient: Kalevalaicity, Medievalism, and Cultural Memory in the Books Niemi and Viiden meren kansa

The article examines two recently published Finnish books, Juha Hurme’s Niemi (2017) and Risto Isomäki’s Viiden meren kansa (2017), in light of discussions on medievalism and cultural memory. It scrutinizes what kinds of connections are made between the medieval period, Finnic Kalevala-metric oral poetry (or ‘kalevalaic’ features such as oral poetry-related themes and images), and the present. The article discusses the use of Kalevala-metric poetry in the medievalist literature as an element through which the image of the Middle Ages as a ‘dark’ period is emphasized. ‘Darkness’ in this case is primarily desired, and only slightly shunned. The idea of desired darkness could be described as a positively charged and affective utilization and admiration of the mythic, ‘pagan,’ ‘grotesque,’ ‘barbaric,’ violent, or supernatural elements often associated with Kalevala-metric poetry, as well as with the medieval period. By scrutinizing the themes of Christianity and ‘pagan’ Finnishness, ‘pagan-ness’ and the crusades, and the desired/othered medieval body, the article asserts that Niemi and…

Landfast sea ice (LFSI) is a critical component of the Arctic sea ice cover, and is changing as a result of Arctic amplification of climate change. Located in coastal areas, LFSI is of great significance to the physical and ecological systems of the Arctic shelf and in local indigenous communities. We present an overview of the physics of Arctic LFSI and the associated implications on the cryosphere. LFSI is kept in place by four fasten mechanisms. The evolution of LFSI is mostly determined by thermodynamic processes, and can therefore be used as an indicator of local climate change. We also present the dynamic processes that are active prior to the formation of LFSI, and those that are involved in LFSI freeze-up and breakup. Season length, thickness and extent of Arctic LFSI are decreasing and showing different trends in different seas, and therefore, causing environmental and climatic impacts. An improved coordination of Arctic LFSI observation is needed with a unified and systematic observation network supported by cooperation between scientists and indigenous communities, as…

Abstract We present a prescription for consistently constructing non-Fock coherent flavour neutrino states within the framework of the seesaw mechanism, and establish that the physical vacuum of massive neutrinos is a condensate of Standard Model massless neutrino states. The coherent states, involving a finite number of massive states, are derived by constructing their creation operator. This construction fulfills automatically the key requirement of coherence for the oscillations of particles to occur. We comment on the inherent non-unitarity of the oscillation probability induced by the requirement of coherence.
