Organic compounds are widespread pollutants in wastewater, causing significant risks for living organisms. In terms of advanced oxidation processes, photocatalysis is known as an effective technology for the oxidation and mineralization of numerous non-biodegradable organic contaminants. The underlying mechanisms of photocatalytic degradation can be explored through kinetic studies. In previous works, Langmuir-Hinshelwood and pseudo-first-order models were commonly applied to fit batch-mode experimental data, revealing critical kinetic parameters. However, the application or combination conditions of these models were inconsistent or ignored. This paper briefly reviews kinetic models and various factors influencing the kinetics of photocatalytic degradation. In this review, kinetic models are also systemized by a new approach to establish a general concept of a kinetic model for the photocatalytic degradation of organic compounds in an aqueous solution.

Biocompatible and surface-modifiable nanocarriers are novel drug delivery systems, which are used to specifically target tumor sites in a controllable way. One of the effective ways to design effective targeting nanocarriers is to decorate with functional ligands, which can bind to specific receptors overexpressed on the surfaces of cancer cells. Various functional ligands, including transferrin, folic acid, polypeptide and hyaluronic acid, have been widely explored to develop tumor-selective drug delivery systems. This review focuses on the research progress of various receptors overexpressed on the surfaces of cancer cells and different nano-delivery systems of anticancer drugs targeted on the surfaces of cancer cells. The accumulation of heavy metals in soil and crops is considered to be a severe environmental problem due to its various harmful effects on animals and plants. Soil adsorption is an essential characteristic of mud, which is the fundamental reason for soil to have a specific self-purification capacity and environmental capacity for heavy metals. The adsorption of heavy metals by soil reduces the uptake of these pollutants by crops, thereby limiting food contamination. Therefore, the adsorption of heavy metals in crop soils was taken as the primary research object. Based on the entire reading of the literature, the previous research results were compared and discussed from the four aspects of heterogeneity, physical and chemical properties, competitive adsorption, and external factors. The influencing mechanism of heavy metal adsorption characteristics in soil was reviewed. Finally, suggestions and prospects for future research on heavy metal adsorption were put forward.

Confirming that the cubic perovskite structure can be formed safely thanks to the proper geometric factors, we find that the lattice constants are gradually increased on increasing the atomic number of the halogen atom from F to I, indicating the weakening of Ag-X and B-X interactions. Our calculations reveal that all the perovskite compounds are mechanically stable due to their elastic constants satisfying the stability criteria, whereas only the Cl-based compounds are dynamically stable in the cubic phase by observing their phonon dispersions without soft modes. The electronic band structures are calculated with the Heyd-Scuseria-Ernzerhof hybrid functional, demonstrating that the In (Sb)-based HDPs show direct (indirect) transition of electrons and the band gaps are decreased from 4.94 to 0.06 eV on going from X = F to I. Microplastics (MPs) are receiving increasing attention from researchers. They are environmental pollutants that do not degrade easily, are retained for prolonged periods in environmental media such as water and sediments, and are known to accumulate in aquatic organisms. The aim of this review is to show and discuss the transport and effects of microplastics in the environment. We systematically and critically review 91 articles in the field of sources, distribution, and environmental behavior of microplastics. We conclude that the spread of plastic pollution is related to a myriad of processes and that both primary and secondary MPs are prevalent in the environment. Rivers have been indicated as major pathways for the transport of MPs from terrestrial areas into the ocean, and atmospheric circulation may be an important avenue for transporting MPs between environmental compartments. Additionally, the vector effect of MPs can change the original environmental behavior of other pollutants, leading to severe compound toxicity. Although science has made great strides in recent years, access to fresh water remains a major challenge for humanity due to water shortage for two-thirds of the world's population. Limited access to fresh water becomes more difficult due to the lack of natural resources of water. Many of these resources are also contaminated by human activities. Many attempts have been made to harvest water from the atmosphere, and condensation systems have received much attention. One of the challenges in generation systems is the high consumption energy of the cooling feed, despite the generation of large amounts of water from the atmosphere. As other airborne contaminants condense with water vapor, the water after harvesting needs to be treated, which adds to construction and maintenance costs. Also, the need for high relative humidity in condensation systems has led scientists to find ways of atmospheric water harvesting at low relative humidity and use renewable energy sources. Sorption systems can absorb atmospheric water without the need for an energy supply and spontaneously. Desiccants…

It is essential to enhance the flame-retardant properties and smoke suppression performance by using multiple flame retardants. Metal-based flame retardants have a unique chemical composition. They are environmentally friendly flame retardants, which can impart good smoke suppression, flame retardancy to polymers and further reduce the production of toxic gases. The differences in the compounds formed between the transition metals and the main group metals make them act differently as flame retardants for polymers. As a result, this study presents the research progress and flame-retardant mechanism of flame-retardant polymers for flame retardants from different groups of metals in the periodic table of elements in a systematic manner. In view of the differences between the main group…

    Show abstract

Dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) are potential products for the next generation of photovoltaic technology, which is one of the research hotspots in photovoltaics. The counter electrode in DSSCs collects electron in the external circuit and catalyzes the reduction of the redox electrolyte and hole transport in the solid electrolyte. Thus, it undoubtedly has an important impact on the photovoltaic performance, long-term stability, and cost of DSSCs. In this work, the materials of counter electrodes are classified into metals, carbon materials, conductive polymers, and inorganic compounds. The preparation, mechanism, conversion efficiency, and properties of counter electrodes are reviewed.

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) and MXenes have demonstrated immense potential for biomedical applications, offering a plethora of advantages. MXenes, in particular, exhibit robust mechanical strength, hydrophilicity, large surface areas, significant light absorption potential, and tunable surface terminations, among other remarkable characteristics. Meanwhile, MOFs possess high porosity and large surface area, making them ideal for protecting active biomolecules and serving as carriers for drug delivery, hence their extensive study in the field of biomedicine. However, akin to other (nano)materials, concerns regarding their environmental implications persist. The number of studies investigating the toxicity and biocompatibility of MXenes and MOFs is growing, albeit further systematic research is needed to thoroughly understand their biosafety issues and biological effects prior to clinical trials. The synthesis of MXenes often involves the use of strong acids and high temperatures, which, if not properly managed, can have adverse effects on the environment. Efforts should be made…

Research progress of catalysts of the aldol condensation reaction of biomass based compounds is summarized for the synthesis of liquid fuel precursors and chemicals. In summary, an acidic catalyst, alkaline catalyst, acid-base amphoteric catalyst, ionic liquid and other catalysts can catalyze the aldol condensation reaction. The aldol condensation reaction catalyzed by an acid catalyst has the problems of low conversion and low yield. The basic catalyst catalyzes the aldol condensation reaction with high conversion and yield, but the existence of liquid alkali is difficult to separate from the product. The reaction temperature needed for oxide and hydrotalcite alkali is relatively high. The basic resin has good catalytic activity and at a low reaction temperature, and is easy to separate from the target product. Acid-base amphoteric catalysts have received extensive attention from researchers for their excellent activity and selectivity. Ionic liquid is a new type of material, which can also be used for the aldol condensation reaction. In the future application of aldol…

resemblance modification. The numerical technique "shooting method" is used to solve the acquired nonlinear set of non - dimensional ODEs. The results are physically exemplified through tables and plots. It has been detected that the accumulation of nanomaterials in the engine oil, reduces the skin friction while accelerating the energy transfer rate. The velocity field significantly decelerates with the encouragement of the porosity factor, and volume fraction of NPs. However, the temperature profile significantly escalates with the encouragement of the porosity factor, and volume fraction of NPs.

How to read this list

The cohort is every article, review and book chapter OpenAlex attributes to RSC Advances with publication year 2023, excluding retracted works and paratext such as editorials and errata.
