Pristine graphene has been considered one of the most promising materials because of its excellent physical and chemical properties. However, various defects in graphene produced during synthesis or fabrication hinder its performance for applications such as electronic devices, transparent electrodes, and spintronic devices. Due to its intrinsic bandgap and nonmagnetic nature, it cannot be used in nanoelectronics or spintronics. Intrinsic and extrinsic defects are ultimately introduced to tailor electronic and magnetic properties and take advantage of their hidden potential. This article emphasizes the current advancement of intrinsic and extrinsic defects in graphene for potential applications. We also discuss the limitations and outlook for such defects in graphene.

The presence of an increasing number of organic pollutants in water now poses serious risks to both human health and ecological systems. Many of these pollutants are persistent and non-biodegradable. The contamination of fresh water by harmful substances has compelled researchers to develop innovative, efficient, and cost-effective water remediation techniques and materials. Thus, photocatalysis has long been recognized as a promising approach to tackle both environmental remediation and the energy crisis. However, semiconductor photocatalysts frequently suffer from defects such as photo-generated charge carrier recombination, poor visible light response, and slow surface reaction kinetics, which can be remedied by modifications with appropriate co-catalysts. Therefore, graphene and its derivatives have widely been used as supports for semiconductors and photocatalysts due to their distinctive optical, physicochemical, and electrical features. This critical review addresses the current progress in the design and synthesis of graphene/semiconductor photocatalysts, as well as their…

Removing organic contaminants such as dyes from water is essential to purify wastewater. Herein, zeolitic imidazolate frameworks-8 (ZIF-8) and ZnO@N-doped C are effective adsorbent and photocatalysts for the adsorption and degradation of organic dyes. The materials showed effective and selective adsorption toward anionic dyes such as methyl blue (MeB) dye in the presence of fluorescein (FLU) dye. The adsorption capacities of ZnO@N-doped C for MeB and FLU dyes are 900 mg/g and 100 mg/g, respectively. According to UV–Vis diffuse reflectance spectra (DRS) data, ZnO@N-doped C has a lower bandgap (2.07 eV) than ZIF-8 (4.34 eV) and ZnO (3.12 eV). Thus, ZnO@N-doped C serves as an effective photocatalyst for the degradation of both dyes under UV exposure. The degradation efficiency capacity of the dye (50 mg/L) is > 90 % using 200 mg/L of the photocatalyst. The mechanism of adsorption and photocatalysis is investigated. The photodegradation pathway of the dye involved the generation of oxidative hydroxy radicals (OH•), which can degrade the dyes. The degradation products of FLU were…

Results show that the tensile strength, Young's modulus, and glass transition temperature are linearly increased with increasing crosslinking density. The elongation at break and tensile toughness show nonlinear downward trends as the crosslinking density increases. The elongation at break decreases gently at first, then dramatically, and finally slowly as the crosslinking density increases. The tensile toughness declines sharply at first and then…

assigned to Zn-O stretching, this validates the formation of the wurtzite structure of ZnO. Raman spectroscopy reveals the characteristic band of the wurtzite structure of ZnO nanoparticles along with coupled vibration modes of Mn/Co with the donor defect states in the doped samples. Enhanced optical absorption in the visible region and a significant red-shift in the absorption band edge were found due to doping. The optical band gap is found to decrease from 3.45 eV to 3.15 eV when Co doping increases up to 6%. The dielectric properties, strongly frequency-dependent, decrease with increasing Co doping while the electrical conductivity increases. Ferromagnetism is observed in all the doped samples, and its origin is attributed to an increase in oxygen vacancies which form bound magnetic polarons. It can be inferred that the doping of Mn and Co can be an effective tool to tune the physical properties of ZnO nanoparticles for potential spintronics and high-frequency applications.

Hydrothermal synthesis has been extensively utilized for fabricating carbon quantum dots (CQDs). Generally, the average sizes of the CQDs are controlled by using specific precursor concentrations, processing temperatures, and reaction times. In our study, the average size of CQDs can simply be controlled by using a different filling volume of sucrose solution in the hydrothermal reactor while keeping the other experimental parameters constant. If homogeneous nucleation plays a major role in the hydrothermal synthesis, the CQDs synthesized by using different filling volumes should have relatively the same size. Nonetheless, we found that the average size of CQDs is inversely correlated with the filling volumes. Particularly, for the hydrothermal syntheses with the filling volumes of 20%, 50%, and 80%, the average size of the CQDs is 15, 13, and 4 nm, respectively. Therefore, the hydrothermal synthesis of CQDs with size-tunability can be achieved by the heterogeneous process associated with the total surface areas between the precursor and reactor.

For this purpose, we obtained NiFe films using direct, pulse, and pulse-reverse electrodeposition modes. The deposit composition, crystal structure, and surface microstructure are studied. Direct current (DC) and pulse current (PC) films have a smooth surface, while a pulse-reverse current (PRC) film surface is covered by a volumetric cauliflower-like microstructure. The mechanism of the film surface development was considered from the point of view of saccharin adsorption and its action as an inhibitor of vertical grain growth during different current modes. During the DC and PC modes, saccharin is freely adsorbed on the growth centers and restrains their vertical growth. Whereas in the case of the PRC electrodeposition, saccharin adsorbs during cathodic pulses and desorbs during anodic pulses. Therefore, its inhibiting action decreases, vertical grain growth…

Significant issues arising with biodiesel production are the cost of the processes, which has stuck its sustainability and the applicability of different resources. In this article, the common biodiesel feedstock such as edible and non-edible vegetable oils, waste oil and animal fats and their advantages and disadvantages were reviewed according to the Web of Science (WOS) database over the timeframe of 1970-2020. The biodiesel feedstock has water or free fatty acid, but it will produce soap by reacting free fatty acids with an alkali catalyst when they present in high portion. This reaction is unfavourable and decreases the biodiesel product yield. This issue can be solved by designing multiple transesterification stages or by employing acidic catalysts to prevent saponification. The second solution is cheaper than the first one and even more applicable because of the abundant source of catalytic materials from a waste product such as rice husk ash, chicken eggshells, fly…

This research deals with the photocatalytic activity of hydroxyapatite and the improvement of efficiency by doping various percentages of copper; the catalysts were synthesized by the wet-chemical method. Pure and copper-doped photocatalysts were characterized by several techniques including X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), dynamic scanning calorimetry (DSC), and UV-Vis spectroscopy. The competency of pure and copper-doped hydroxyapatite as photocatalysts was assessed by their interaction with Congo red dye. The crystallographic parameters of the catalysts were also estimated by employing the XRD technique, and a relationship was established between the calculated parameters and photocatalytic performance. Crystallite size was calculated from various model equations, which revealed an acceptable crystallite size of 42-68 nm. Copper doping in hydroxyapatite impressively augmented the photocatalytic efficacy, for example 99% dye was degraded upon 0.63%…

Anticancer-drug delivery is now becoming a challenging approach for researchers as it allows controlled drug delivery near cancerous cells with minimized generic collection and the avoidance of secondary side effects. Hence in this work, the applications of nanostructures as anticancer drug-delivery carriers were widely investigated to target cancerous tissues. Based on DFT calculations, we investigated the transition metal-doped boron nitride nanostructure as a drug-delivery agent for the gemcitabine drug utilizing the B3LYP/6-31G (d, p) level of theory. In this research, the adsorption energy and electronic parameters of gemcitabine on the interaction with the metal-doped BN nanostructures were studied. It has been observed that metal doping significantly enhances the drug-delivery properties of BN nanostructures. Among the investigated nanostructures, Ni-BN has been found to be the most prominent nanostructure to transport gemcitabine with an elevated value of adsorption energy in both the gas phase (-45.79) and water media (-32.46). The interaction between gemcitabine and BN…

Compared to fullerene materials, non-fullerene acceptor materials have in recent years been more widely used in organic solar cell devices due to their optical properties and due to the ease of carrying out syntheses to tune their electronic energy levels. Non-fullerene acceptors constitute a major focus of research in the development of bulk-heterojunction organic solar cells. Recent developments have yielded increased power conversion efficiency (PCE) levels for non-fullerene acceptor materials, with the PCE levels now shown to exceed 20%. Perylene diimide (PDI), a non-fullerene acceptor material, has been widely studied because of its good transmission capacity and strong electron affinity. This paper summarizes the application of PDI molecules as acceptor materials in organic solar cells in recent years, detailing the strategies and approaches of molecular design and their application effects.

Antibacterial drugs face increasing challenges due to drug resistance and adverse reactions, which has created a pressing need for the discovery and development of novel antibacterial drugs. Herbs have played an important role in the treatment of infectious diseases. This review aims to summarize, analyze and evaluate the antibacterial activities and mechanisms of components from popular herbs in East Asia. In this review, we have searched and summarized the scientific papers published during the past twenty-year period from electronic databases such as PubMed, ScienceDirect, and Web of Science. These herbs and their components, including alkaloids, flavonoids, essential oils, terpenes, organic acids, coumarins and lignans, display potential antimicrobial effects. Herbal medicine formulas (HMFs) usually show stronger antibacterial activity than single herbs. Herbs and HMFs bring forth antibacterial activities by damaging cell membranes and walls, inhibiting nucleic acid and protein synthesis, and increasing intracellular osmotic pressure. These herbs and their components can be…
