Organic photovoltaics (OPVs) suffer from a trade-off between efficient charge transport and suppressed nonradiative recombination due to the aggregation-induced luminance quenching of organic semiconductors. To resolve this grand challenge, a π-extended nonfullerene acceptor (NFA) B6Cl with large voids among the honeycomb network is designed and introduced into photovoltaic systems. We find that the presence of a small amount of (i.e., 0.5 or 1 wt %) B6Cl can compress the molecular packing of the host acceptor L8-BO, leading to shortened π–π stacking distance from 3.59 to 3.50 Å (that will improve charge transport) together with ordered alkyl chain packing (that will inhibit nonradiative energy loss due to the suppressed C–C and C–H bonds vibrations), as validated by high-energy X-ray scattering measurements. This morphology transformation ultimately results in simultaneously improved J SC, FF, and V OC of OPVs . As a result, the maximum PCEs of PM6:L8-BO and D18:L8-BO are increased from 19.1 and 19.3% to 19.8 and 20.2%, respectively, which are among the highest values for…

High Resolution Image Download MS PowerPoint Slide The electrochemical reduction of nitrate (NO 3 – ) and nitrite (NO 2 – ) enables sustainable, carbon-neutral, and decentralized routes to produce ammonia (NH 3 ). Copper-based materials are promising electrocatalysts for NO x – conversion to NH 3 . However, the underlying reaction mechanisms and the role of different Cu species during the catalytic process are still poorly understood. Herein, by combining quasi in situ X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and operando X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS), we unveiled that Cu is mostly in metallic form during the highly selective reduction of NO 3 – /NO 2 – to NH 3 . On the contrary, Cu(I) species are predominant in a potential region where the two-electron reduction of NO 3 – to NO 2 – is the major reaction. Electrokinetic analysis and in situ Raman spectroscopy was also used to propose possible steps and intermediates leading to NO 2 – and NH 3, respectively. This work establishes a correlation between the catalytic performance and the dynamic changes of the chemical state of Cu,…

The discovery of efficient and stable electrocatalysts for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) in acid is vital for the commercialization of the proton-exchange membrane water electrolyzer. In this work, we demonstrate that short-range Ru atom arrays with near-ideal Ru–Ru interatomic distances and a unique Ru–O hybridization state can trigger direct O*–O* radical coupling to form an intermediate O*–O*-Ru configuration during acidic OER without generating OOH* species. Further, the Ru atom arrays suppress the participation of lattice oxygen in the OER and the dissolution of active Ru. Benefiting from these advantages, the as-designed Ru array-Co 3 O 4 electrocatalyst breaks the activity/stability trade-off that plagues RuO 2 -based electrocatalysts, delivering an excellent OER overpotential of only 160 mV at 10 mA cm –2 in 0.5 M H 2 SO 4 and outstanding durability during 1500 h operation, representing one of the best acid-stable OER electrocatalysts reported to date. 18 O-labeled operando spectroscopic measurements together with theoretical investigations revealed that the short-range Ru…

The reaction mechanism of CO 2 electroreduction on oxide-derived copper has not yet been unraveled even though high C 2+ Faradaic efficiencies are commonly observed on these surfaces. In this study, we aim to explore the effects of copper anodization on the adsorption of various CO 2 RR intermediates using in situ surface-enhanced infrared absorption spectroscopy (SEIRAS) on metallic and mildly anodized copper thin films. The in situ SEIRAS results show that the preoxidation process can significantly improve the overall CO 2 reduction activity by (1) enhancing CO 2 activation, (2) increasing CO uptake, and (3) promoting C–C coupling. First, the strong *COO – redshift indicates that the preoxidation process significantly enhances the first elementary step of CO 2 adsorption and activation. The rapid uptake of adsorbed *CO atop also illustrates how a high *CO coverage can be achieved in oxide-derived copper electrocatalysts. Finally, for the first time, we observed the formation of the *COCHO dimer on the anodized copper thin film. Using DFT calculations, we show how the presence of…

Natural proteins are highly optimized for function but are often difficult to produce at a scale suitable for biotechnological applications due to poor expression in heterologous systems, limited solubility, and sensitivity to temperature. Thus, a general method that improves the physical properties of native proteins while maintaining function could have wide utility for protein-based technologies. Here, we show that the deep neural network ProteinMPNN, together with evolutionary and structural information, provides a route to increasing protein expression, stability, and function. For both myoglobin and tobacco etch virus (TEV) protease, we generated designs with improved expression, elevated melting temperatures, and improved function. For TEV protease, we identified multiple designs with improved catalytic activity as compared to the parent sequence and previously reported TEV variants. Our approach should be broadly useful for improving the expression, stability, and function of biotechnologically important proteins.

Understanding the interfacial hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) is crucial to regulate the electrochemical behavior in aqueous zinc batteries. However, the mechanism of HER related to solvation chemistry remains elusive, especially the time-dependent dynamic evolution of the hydrogen bond (H-bond) under an electric field. Herein, we combine in situ spectroscopy with molecular dynamics simulation to unravel the dynamic evolution of the interfacial solvation structure. We find two critical change processes involving Zn-electroplating/stripping, including the initial electric double layer establishment to form an H 2 O-rich interface (abrupt change) and the subsequent dynamic evolution of an H-bond (gradual change). Moreover, the number of H-bonds increases, and their strength weakens in comparison with the bulk electrolyte under bias potential during Zn 2+ desolvation, forming a diluted interface, resulting in massive hydrogen production. On the contrary, a concentrated interface (H-bond number decreases and strength enhances) is formed and produces a small amount of hydrogen during…

Photocatalytic CO 2 reduction holds great potential for alleviating global energy and environmental issues, where the electronic structure of the catalytic center plays a crucial role. However, the spin state, a key descriptor of electronic properties, is largely overlooked. Herein, we present a simple strategy to regulate the spin states of catalytic Co centers by changing their coordination environment by exchanging the Co species into a stable Zn-based metal–organic framework (MOF) to afford Co-OAc, Co-Br, and Co-CN for CO 2 photoreduction. Experimental and DFT calculation results suggest that the distinct spin states of the Co sites give rise to different charge separation abilities and energy barriers for CO 2 adsorption/activation in photocatalysis. Consequently, the optimized Co-OAc with the highest spin-state Co sites presents an excellent photocatalytic CO 2 activity of 2325.7 μmol·g –1 ·h –1 and selectivity of 99.1% to CO, which are among the best in all reported MOF photocatalysts, in the absence of a noble metal and additional photosensitizer. The catalyst–electrolyte interface plays a crucial role in proton exchange membrane water electrolysis (PEMWE). However, optimizing the interfacial hydrogen bonding to enhance both catalytic activity and stability remains a significant challenge. Here, a novel catalyst design strategy is proposed based on the hard–soft acid–base principle, employing hard Lewis acids (LAs = ZrO 2, TiO 2, HfO 2 ) to mediate the reconfiguration of interfacial hydrogen bonding, thereby enhancing the acidic oxygen evolution reaction (OER) performance of RuO 2 . Mechanistic analysis indicates that LAs prompt a directional evolution from a rigid hydrogen bonding network to free water, enhancing the trapping of interfacial water on the RuO 2 surface, which continuously supplies reactants to the catalytic sites. Moreover, the interconnected hydrogen bonding network facilitates rapid proton transfer, reducing local acidity on the catalyst surface and preventing structural corrosion, thus significantly improving long-term stability. The tandem pathway of water supply and deprotonation transforms the…

Electrocatalytic reduction of nitrate to ammonia (NRA) has emerged as an alternative strategy for sewage treatment and ammonia generation. Despite excellent performances having been achieved over cobalt-based electrocatalysts, the reaction mechanism as well as veritable active species across a wide potential range are still full of controversy. Here, we adopt CoP, Co, and Co 3 O 4 as model materials to solve these issues. CoP evolves into a core@shell structured CoP@Co before NRA. For CoP@Co and Co catalysts, a three-step relay mechanism is carried out over superficial dynamical Co δ+ active species under low overpotential, while a continuous hydrogenation mechanism from nitrate to ammonia is unveiled over superficial Co species under high overpotential. In comparison, Co 3 O 4 species are stable and steadily catalyze nitrate hydrogenation to ammonia across a wide potential range. As a result, CoP@Co and Co exhibit much higher NRA activity than Co 3 O 4 especially under a low overpotential. Moreover, the NRA performance of CoP@Co is higher than Co although they experience the same…

The advancement of acid-stable oxygen evolution reaction (OER) electrocatalysts is crucial for efficient hydrogen production through proton exchange membrane (PEM) water electrolysis. Unfortunately, the activity of electrocatalysts is constrained by a linear scaling relationship in the adsorbed evolution mechanism, while the lattice-oxygen-mediated mechanism undermines stability. Here, we propose a heterogeneous dual-site oxide pathway mechanism (OPM) that avoids these limitations through direct dioxygen radical coupling. A combination of Lewis acid (Cr) and Ru to form solid solution oxides (Cr x Ru 1– x O 2 ) promotes OH adsorption and shortens the dual-site distance, which facilitates the formation of *O radical and promotes the coupling of dioxygen radical, thereby altering the OER mechanism to a Cr–Ru dual-site OPM. The Cr 0.6 Ru 0.4 O 2 catalyst demonstrates a lower overpotential than that of RuO 2 and maintains stable operation for over 350 h in a PEM water electrolyzer at 300 mA cm –2 . The design of temperature-adaptive Zn–air batteries (ZABs) with long life spans and high energy efficiencies is challenging owing to sluggish oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) kinetics and an unstable Zn/electrolyte interface. Herein, a quasi-solid-state ZAB is designed by combining atomically dispersed Fe–N–C catalysts containing pyridinic N vacancies (FeNC-V N ) with a polarized organo-hydrogel electrolyte. First-principles calculation predicts that adjacent V N sites effectively enhance the covalency of Fe–N x moieties and moderately weaken *OH binding energies, significantly boosting the ORR kinetics and stability. In situ Raman spectra reveal the dynamic evolution of *O 2 – and *OOH on the FeNC-V N cathode in the aqueous ZAB, proving that the 4e – associative mechanism is dominant. Moreover, the ethylene glycol-modulated organo-hydrogel electrolyte forms a zincophilic protective layer on the Zn anode surface and tailors the [Zn(H 2 O) 6 ] 2+ solvation sheath, effectively guiding epitaxial deposition of Zn 2+ on the Zn (002) plane and suppressing side reactions. Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) are an emerging class of highly porous crystalline organic polymers comprised entirely of organic linkers connected by strong covalent bonds. Due to their excellent physicochemical properties (e.g., ordered structure, porosity, and stability), COFs are considered ideal materials for developing state-of-the-art separation membranes. In fact, significant advances have been made in the last six years regarding the fabrication and functionalization of COF membranes. Unraveling the catalyst surface structure and behavior during reactions is essential for both mechanistic understanding and performance optimization. Here we report a phenomenon of facet-dependent surface restructuring intrinsic to β-Ni(OH) 2 catalysts during oxygen evolution reaction (OER), discovered by the correlative ex situ and operando characterization. The ex situ study after OER reveals β-Ni(OH) 2 restructuring at the edge facets to form nanoporous Ni 1– x O, which is Ni deficient containing Ni 3+ species. Nonprecious transition metal catalysts have emerged as the preferred choice for industrial alkaline water electrolysis due to their cost-effectiveness. However, their overstrong binding energy to adsorbed OH often results in the blockage of active sites, particularly in the cathodic hydrogen evolution reaction. Herein, we found that single-atom sites exhibit a puncture effect to effectively alleviate OH blockades, thereby significantly enhancing the alkaline hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) performance. Typically, after anchoring single Ru atoms onto tungsten carbides, the overpotential at 10 mA·cm –2 is reduced by more than 130 mV (159 vs 21 mV). Also, the mass activity is increased 16-fold over commercial Pt/C (MA 100 = 17.3 A·mg Ru –1 vs 1.1 A·mg Pt –1, Pt/C). More importantly, such electrocatalyst-based alkaline anion-exchange membrane water electrolyzers can exhibit an ultralow potential (1.79 V cell ) and high stability at an industrial current density of 1.0 A·cm –2 . Density functional theory (DFT) calculations reveal that the isolated Ru sites could weaken the surrounding…

The electrochemical carbon dioxide reduction reaction (CO 2 RR) toward C 2 products is a promising way for the clean energy economy. Modulating the structure of the electric double layer (EDL), especially the interfacial water and cation type, is a useful strategy to promote C–C coupling, but atomic understanding lags far behind the experimental observations. Herein, we investigate the combined effect of interfacial water and alkali metal cations on the C–C coupling at the Cu(100) electrode/electrolyte interface using ab initio molecular dynamics (AIMD) simulations with a constrained MD and slow-growth approach. We observe a linear correlation between the water-adsorbate stabilization effect, which manifests as hydrogen bonds, and the corresponding alleviation in the C–C coupling free energy. The role of a larger cation, compared to a smaller cation (e.g., K + vs Li + ), lies in its ability to approach the interface through desolvation and coordinates with the *CO+*CO moiety, partially substituting the hydrogen-bonding stabilizing effect of interfacial water. With more flexible active sites and intermetal interaction, dual-atom catalysts (DACs) have emerged as a new frontier in various electrocatalytic reactions. Constructing a typical p-d orbital hybridization between p-block and d-block metal atoms may bring new avenues for manipulating the electronic properties and thus boosting the electrocatalytic activities. Herein, we report a distinctive heteronuclear dual-metal atom catalyst with asymmetrical FeSn dual atom sites embedded on a two-dimensional C 2 N nanosheet (FeSn–C 2 N), which displays excellent oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) performance with a half-wave potential of 0.914 V in an alkaline electrolyte. Theoretical calculations further unveil the powerful p-d orbital hybridization between p-block stannum and d-block ferrum in FeSn dual atom sites, which triggers electron delocalization and lowers the energy barrier of *OH protonation, consequently enhancing the ORR activity. In addition, the FeSn–C 2 N-based Zn–air battery provides a high maximum power density (265.5 mW cm –2 ) and a high specific capacity (754.6 mA h g –1 ).…

Iron–nitrogen–carbon (Fe–N–C) materials have been identified as a promising class of platinum (Pt)-free catalysts for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). However, the dissolution and oxidation of Fe atoms severely restrict their long-term stability and performance. Modulating the active microstructure of Fe–N–C is a feasible strategy to enhance the ORR activity and stability. Compared with common 3d transition metals (Co, Ni, etc.), the 4d transition metal atom Nb has fewer d electrons and more unoccupied orbitals, which could potentially forge a more robust interaction with the Fe site to optimize the binding energy of the oxygen-containing intermediates while maintaining stability. Herein, an asymmetric Fe–Nb diatomic site catalyst (FeNb/c-SNC) was synthesized, which exhibited superior ORR performance and stability compared with those of Fe single-atom catalysts (SACs). The strong interaction within the Fe–Nb diatomic sites optimized the desorption energy of key intermediates (*OH), so that the adsorption energy of Fe–*OH approaches the apex of the volcano plot, thus exhibiting…

The shuttling of polysulfides on the cathode and the uncontrollable growth of lithium dendrites on the anode have restricted the practical application of lithium–sulfur (Li–S) batteries. In this study, a metal-coordinated 3D covalent organic framework (COF) with a homogeneous distribution of nickel–bis(dithiolene) and N-rich triazine centers (namely, NiS 4 -TAPT) was designed and synthesized, which can serve as bifunctional hosts for both sulfur cathodes and lithium anodes in Li–S batteries. The abundant Ni centers and N-sites in NiS 4 -TAPT can greatly enhance the adsorption and conversion of the polysulfides. Meanwhile, the presence of Ni–bis(dithiolene) centers enables uniform Li nucleation at the Li anode, thereby suppressing the growth of Li dendrites. This work demonstrated the effectiveness of integrating catalytic and adsorption sites to optimize the chemical interactions between host materials and redox-active intermediates, potentially facilitating the rational design of metal-coordinated COF materials for high-performance secondary batteries.

Addressing this challenge requires the construction of spatially adjacent redox sites while suppressing charge recombination at these sites. This study introduces an innovative approach that utilizes spatial synergy to enable synergistic redox reactions within atomic proximity and employs spin polarization to inhibit charge recombination. We incorporate Mn into Co 3 O 4 as a catalyst, in which Mn sites tend to enrich holes as water activation sites, while adjacent Co sites preferentially capture electrons to activate CO 2, forming a spatial synergy. The direct H transfer from H 2 O at Mn sites facilitates the formation of *COOH on adjacent Co sites with remarkably favorable thermodynamic energy. Herein, theoretical calculations reveal that cascade Ag–Cu dual sites could synergistically increase local CO coverage and lower the kinetic barrier for CO protonation, leading to enhanced asymmetric C–C coupling to generate C 2 H 4 . As a proof of concept, the Cu 3 N-Ag nanocubes (NCs) with Ag located in partial Cu sites and a Cu 3 N unit center are successfully synthesized. Although polylactic acid (PLA) represents a pivotal biodegradable polymer, its biodegradability has inadvertently overshadowed the development of effective recycling techniques, leading to the potential wastage of carbon resources. The photoreforming–recycling approach for PLA exhibits significant potential in terms of concepts and methods. However, the reaction faces enormous challenges due to the limited selectivity of organic oxidation products as well as the increased costs and challenging separation of organic products associated with alkali-solution-assisted prehydrolysis. Herein, we report an alkali-free direct-photoreforming pathway for real-world PLA plastics utilizing the Pd-CdS photocatalyst under visible-light illumination, obviating the need for chemical pretreatment of PLA. The devised pathway successfully produces H 2 at a rate of 49.8 μmol g cat. –1 h –1, sustained over 100 h, and exhibits remarkable selectivity toward pyruvic acid (95.9% in liquid products). Additionally, experimental findings elucidate that Pd sites not only function as a typical cocatalyst for…

The recently surged halide-based solid electrolytes (SEs) are great candidates for high-performance all-solid-state batteries (ASSBs), due to their decent ionic conductivity, wide electrochemical stability window, and good compatibility with high-voltage oxide cathodes. In contrast to the crystalline phases in halide SEs, amorphous components are rarely understood but play an important role in Li-ion conduction. Here, we reveal that the presence of amorphous component is common in halide-based SEs that are prepared via mechanochemical method. The fast Li-ion migration is found to be associated with the local chemistry of the amorphous proportion. Taking Zr-based halide SEs as an example, the amorphization process can be regulated by incorporating O, resulting in the formation of corner-sharing Zr–O/Cl polyhedrons. This structural configuration has been confirmed through X-ray absorption spectroscopy, pair distribution function analyses, and Reverse Monte Carlo modeling. The unique structure significantly reduces the energy barriers for Li-ion transport. As a result, an enhanced…

Cu-based catalysts are optimal for the electroreduction of CO 2 to generate hydrocarbon products. However, controlling product distribution remains a challenging topic. The theoretical investigations have revealed that the coordination number (CN) of Cu considerably influences the adsorption energy of *CO intermediates, thereby affecting the reaction pathway. Cu catalysts with different CNs were fabricated by reducing CuO precursors via cyclic voltammetry (Cyc-Cu), potentiostatic electrolysis (Pot-Cu), and pulsed electrolysis (Pul-Cu), respectively. High-CN Cu catalysts predominantly generate C 2+ products, while low-CN Cu favors CH 4 production. For instance, over the high-CN Pot-Cu, C 2+ is the main product, with the Faradaic efficiency (FE) reaching 82.5% and a partial current density ( j ) of 514.3 mA cm –2 . Conversely, the low-CN Pul(3)-Cu favors the production of CH 4, achieving the highest FE CH4 value of 56.7% with a j CH4 value of 234.4 mA cm –2 . In situ X-ray absorption spectroscopy and Raman spectroscopy studies further confirm the different *CO adsorptions over Cu…

The electrochemical CO 2 reduction reaction by copper-based catalysts features a promising approach to generate value-added multicarbon (C 2+ ) products. However, due to the unfavored formation of oxygenate intermediates on the catalyst surface, the selectivity of C 2+ alcohols like ethanol remains unsatisfactory compared to that of ethylene. The bifurcation point (i.e., the CH 2 ═CHO* intermediate adsorbed on Cu via a Cu–O–C linkage) is critical to the C 2+ product selectivity, whereas the subsequent cleavage of the Cu–O or the O–C bond determines the ethanol or ethylene pathway. Inspired by the hard–soft acid–base theory, in this work, we demonstrate an electron delocalization tuning strategy of the Cu catalyst by a nitrene surface functionalization approach, which allows weakening and cleaving of the Cu–O bond of the adsorbed CH 2 ═CHO*, as well as accelerating hydrogenation of the C═C bond along the ethanol pathway. As a result, the nitrene-functionalized Cu catalyst exhibited a much-enhanced ethanol Faradaic efficiency of 45% with a peak partial current density of 406 mA·cm –2,…

Specifically, NMR spectroscopy measurements and simulations of electrolyte-soaked carbons evidenced that nanoporous carbons with smaller graphene-like domains have larger capacitances. In this study, we use Raman spectroscopy, a common probe of local structural disorder in nanoporous carbons, to test the disorder-driven capacitance theory. It is found that nanoporous carbons with broader D bands and smaller I D /I G intensity ratios exhibit higher capacitance. Most notably, the I D /I G intensity ratio probes the in-plane sizes of graphene-like domains and supports the findings from NMR that smaller graphene-like domains correlate with larger capacitances. This study supports our finding that disorder is a key metric for high capacitance in nanoporous carbons and shows that Raman spectroscopy is a powerful technique that allows rapid screening to…

These factors constrain the reversibility and kinetics of lithium metal batteries at low temperatures. The development of potential-resolved electrochemiluminescence (ECL) systems with dual emitting signals holds great promise for accurate and reliable determination in complex samples. However, the practical application of such systems is hindered by the inevitable mutual interaction and mismatch between different luminophores or coreactants. In this work, for the first time, by precisely tuning the oxygen reduction performance of M–N–C single-atom catalysts (SACs), we present a dual potential-resolved luminol ECL system employing endogenous dissolved O 2 as a coreactant. Using advanced in situ monitoring and theoretical calculations, we elucidate the intricate mechanism involving the selective and efficient activation of dissolved O 2 through central metal species modulation. Extending the depth-of-charge (DoC) of the layered oxide cathode presents an essential route to improve the competitiveness of the Na-ion battery versus the commercialized LiFePO 4 -based Li-ion battery (0.8 CNY/Wh). However, the DoC-dependent boundary between detrimental/irreversible structural distortion and neutral/reversible structure interconversion cannot be clearly distinguished, which is attributed to the ambiguous recognition of correlation among the complex phase transition, local covalent environment evolution, and charge compensation. Herein, to bridge the above gap, we employed O3-NaNi 1/3 Fe 1/3 Mn 1/3 O 2 as the prototype cathode and extended the target DoC from typical Na0.4 (∼125 mAh/g, 4.0 V cutoff) to Na0.2 (∼180 mAh/g, 4.3 V cutoff). Regarding phase transition and charge compensation, the O3-to-P3 phase transition occurs before moderate Na 0.4 -DoC (Fe/Mn redox silence, Ni oxidation dominated), while further desodiation (start from Na 0.4 ) induces a P-to-O slab transition, resulting in the coexistence of P3 and OP2 phases and subsequent OP2/O3 intergrowth phases…

The continuous dissolution and oxidation of active sites in Ru-based electrocatalysts have greatly hindered their practical application in proton exchange membrane water electrolyzers (PEMWE). In this work, we first used density functional theory (DFT) to calculate the dissolution energy of Ru in the 3d transition metal-doped MRuO x (M = Sc, Ti, V, Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, and Zn) to evaluate their stability for acidic oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and screen out ZnRuO x as the best candidate. To confirm the theoretical predictions, we experimentally synthesized these MRuO x materials and found that ZnRuO x indeed displays robust acidic OER stability with a negligible decay of η 10 after 15 000 CV cycles. Of importance, using ZnRuO x as the anode, the PEMWE can run stably for 120 h at 200 mA cm –2 . We also further uncover the stability mechanism of ZnRuO x, i.e., Zn atoms doped in the outside of ZnRuO x nanocrystal would form a “Zn-rich” shell, which effectively shortened average Ru–O bond lengths in ZnRuO x to strengthen the Ru–O interaction and therefore boosted intrinsic…

Impact-stiffening materials that undergo a strain rate-induced soft-to-rigid transition hold great promise as soft armors in the protection of the human body and equipment. However, current impact-stiffening materials, such as polyborosiloxanes and shear-thickening fluids, often exhibit a limited impact-stiffening response. Herein, we propose a design strategy for fabricating highly impact-stiffening supramolecular polymer networks by leveraging high-entropy-penalty physical interactions. We synthesized a fully biobased supramolecular polymer comprising poly(α-thioctic acid) and arginine clusters, whose chain dynamics are governed by highly specific guanidinium-carboxylate salt-bridge hydrogen bonds. The resulting material exhibits an exceptional impact-stiffening response of ∼2100 times, transitioning from a soft dissipating state (21 kPa, 0.1 Hz) to a highly stiffened glassy state (45.3 MPa, 100 Hz) with increasing strain rates. Moreover, the material's high energy-dissipating and hot-melting properties bring excellent damping performance and easy hybridization with other…

Electrochemical CO 2 reduction reaction (CO 2 RR) in acid can solve alkalinity issues while highly corrosive and reductive acidic electrolytes usually cause catalyst degradation. Inhibiting catalyst degradation is crucial for the stability of acidic CO 2 RR. Here, we reveal the microenvironment changes of dynamic Bi-based catalysts and develop a pulse chronoamperometry (CA) strategy to improve the stability of acidic CO 2 RR. In situ fluorescence mappings show that the local pH changes from neutral to acid, and the in situ Raman spectra reveal the dynamic evolution of interfacial water structures in the microenvironment. We propose that the surface charge properties of dynamic catalysts affect the competitive adsorption of K + and protons, thereby causing the differences in local pH and CO 2 RR intermediate adsorption. We also develop a pulse CA strategy to reactivate catalysts, and the stability of acidic CO 2 RR is improved by 2 orders of magnitude for 100 h operation, which is higher than most reports on the stability of acidic CO 2 RR. Photothermal hydrogenation of carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) into value-added products is an ideal solution for addressing the energy crisis and mitigating CO 2 emissions. However, achieving high product selectivity remains challenging due to the simultaneous occurrence of numerous competing intermediate reactions during CO 2 hydrogenation. We present a novel approach featuring isolated single-atom nickel (Ni) anchored onto indium oxide (In 2 O 3 ) nanocrystals, serving as an effective photothermal catalyst for CO 2 hydrogenation into methane (CH 4 ) with a remarkable near-unity (∼99%) selectivity. Experiments and theoretical simulations have confirmed that isolated Ni sites on the In 2 O 3 surface can effectively stabilize the intermediate products of the CO 2 hydrogenation reaction and reduce the transition state energy barrier, thereby changing the reaction path to achieve ultrahigh selective methanation. This study provides comprehensive insights into the design of single-atom catalysts for the highly selective photothermal catalytic hydrogenation of CO 2 to methane.

The fundamental understanding of sluggish hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) kinetics on a platinum (Pt) surface in alkaline media is a topic of considerable debate. Herein, we combine cyclic voltammetry (CV) and electrical transport spectroscopy (ETS) approaches to probe the Pt surface at different pH values and develop molecular-level insights into the pH-dependent HER kinetics in alkaline media. The change in HER Tafel slope from ∼110 mV/decade in pH 7-10 to ∼53 mV/decade in pH 11-13 suggests considerably enhanced kinetics at higher pH. The ETS studies reveal a similar pH-dependent switch in the ETS conductance signal at around pH 10, suggesting a notable change of surface adsorbates. Fixed-potential calculations and chemical bonding analysis suggest that this switch is attributed to a change in interfacial water orientation, shifting from primarily an O-down configuration below pH 10 to a H-down configuration above pH 10. This reorientation weakens the O-H bond in the interfacial water molecules and modifies the reaction pathway, leading to considerably accelerated HER kinetics…

An enclosed nanospace often shows a significant confinement effect on chemistry within its inner cavity, while whether an open space can have this effect remains elusive. Here, we show that the open surface of TiO 2 creates a confined environment for In 2 O 3 which drives spontaneous transformation of free In 2 O 3 nanoparticles in physical contact with TiO 2 nanoparticles into In oxide (InO x ) nanolayers covering onto the TiO 2 surface during CO 2 hydrogenation to CO. The formed InO x nanolayers are easy to create surface oxygen vacancies but are against over-reduction to metallic In in the H 2 -rich atmospheres, which thus show significantly enhanced activity and stability in comparison with the pure In 2 O 3 catalyst. The formation of interfacial In–O–Ti bonding is identified to drive the In 2 O 3 dispersion and stabilize the metastable InO x layers. The InO x overlayers with distinct chemistry from their free counterpart can be confined on various oxide surfaces, demonstrating the important confinement effect at oxide/oxide interfaces.

However, the mechanism of MOR on these materials remains a matter of controversy. Herein, we combine in situ surface-enhanced infrared absorption spectroscopy (SEIRAS) and density functional theory (DFT) calculations to identify the active sites and determine the mechanism of MOR on monometallic Ni-based catalysts in alkaline media. The SEIRAS results show that formate and (bi)carbonate are formed after the commencement of the MOR with potential-dependent relative distributions. These spectroscopic results are in good agreement with the DFT-computed reaction profiles over an oxygen vacancy, suggesting that the MOR mainly proceeds through the formate-involving pathway, in which the early consumption of methanol yields formate as the major product, while increasing potential drives further oxidation of formate to (bi)carbonate. However, achieving high selectivity for MF as well as tuning the selectivity between FA and MF within one reaction system remain challenging. However, the kinetics of ORR are constrained by scaling relations, where the adsorption free energy of *OOH is intrinsically linked to that of *OH with a nearly constant difference larger than the optimal value. In this study, a well-defined binuclear Co 2 complex was synthesized and adsorbed onto carbon black, serving as a model dual-atom catalyst. This catalyst achieved a record half-wave potential of 0.972 V versus the reversible hydrogen electrode in an alkaline electrolyte. Density functional theory simulations and in situ infrared spectroscopy revealed that the dual-atom site stabilizes the *OOH intermediate through bidentate coordination, thereby reducing the free energy gap between *OOH and *OH. By altering the adsorption configuration of *OOH on the dual-atom site, the scaling relations are effectively disrupted, leading to a significant enhancement in ORR activity.

High Resolution Image Download MS PowerPoint Slide A considerable carbon loss of CO 2 electroreduction in neutral and alkaline media severely limits its industrial viability as a result of the homogeneous reaction of CO 2 and OH – under interfacial alkalinity. Here, to mitigate homogeneous reactions, we conducted CO 2 electroreduction in mildly acidic media. By modulating the interfacial reaction environment via multiple electrolyte effects, the parasitic hydrogen evolution reaction is suppressed, leading to a faradaic efficiency of over 80% for CO on the planar Au electrode. Using the rotating ring-disk electrode technique, the Au ring constitutes an in situ CO collector and pH sensor, enabling the recording of the Faradaic efficiency and monitoring of interfacial reaction environment while CO 2 reduction takes place on the Au disk. The dominant branch of hydrogen evolution reaction switches from the proton reduction to the water reduction as the interfacial environment changes from acidic to alkaline. By comparison, CO 2 reduction starts within the proton reduction region as the…

Electrocatalytic nitrate reduction reaction (NO 3 RR) presents an innovative approach for sustainable NH 3 production. However, selective NH 3 production is hindered by the multiple intermediates involved in the NO 3 RR process and the competitive hydrogen evolution reaction. Hence, the development of highly efficient NO 3 RR catalysts is paramount. Herein, we report highly efficient bimetallic catalysts derived from hydroxy double salt (HDS). Under NO 3 RR conditions, Cu 1 Co 1 -HDS undergoes in situ reconstruction, forming nanocomposites of homogeneously distributed metallic Cu 0 and Co(OH) 2 . Reconstruction-induced Cu 0 rapidly converts NO 3 – to NO 2 –, which is further hydrogenated to NH 3 by Co(OH) 2 . Homogeneously mixed Cu and Co species maximize this synergistic effect, achieving outstanding NO 3 RR performance including the highest NH 3 yield rate (4.625 mmol h –1 cm –2 ) reported for powder-type NO 3 RR catalysts. Integration of Cu 1 Co 1 -HDS with a commercial Si solar cell attained 4.53% solar-to-ammonia efficiency from industrial wastewater-level concentrations of NO…

Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) are created by the condensation of molecular building blocks and nodes to form two-dimensional (2D) or three-dimensional (3D) crystalline frameworks. The diversity of molecular building blocks with different properties and functionalities and the large number of possible framework topologies open a vast space of possible well-defined porous architectures. Besides more classical applications of porous materials such as molecular absorption, separation, and catalytic conversions, interest in the optoelectronic properties of COFs has recently increased considerably. The electronic properties of both the molecular building blocks and their linkage chemistry can be controlled to tune photon absorption and emission, to create excitons and charge carriers, and to use these charge carriers in different applications such as photocatalysis, luminescence, chemical sensing, and photovoltaics. In this Perspective, we will discuss the relationship between the structural features of COFs and their optoelectronic properties, starting with the building blocks and…

Single-atom catalysis (SAC) attracts wide interest for zinc–air batteries that require high-performance bifunctional electrocatalysts for oxygen reactions. However, catalyst design is still highly challenging because of the insufficient driving force for promoting multiple-electron transfer kinetics. Herein, we report a superstructure-assisted SAC on tungsten carbides for oxygen evolution and reduction reactions. In addition to the usual single atomic sites, strikingly, we reveal the presence of highly ordered Co superstructures in the interfacial region with tungsten carbides that induce internal strain and promote bifunctional catalysis. Theoretical calculations show that the combined effects from superstructures and single atoms strongly reduce the adsorption energy of intermediates and overpotential of both oxygen reactions. The catalyst therefore presented impressive bifunctional activity with an ultralow potential gap of 0.623 V and delivered a high power density of 188.5 mW cm –2 for assembled zinc–air batteries. This work opens up new opportunities for atomic catalysis.

Electrocatalytic CO 2 reduction (CO 2 RR) to alcohols offers a promising strategy for converting waste CO 2 into valuable fuels/chemicals but usually requires large overpotentials. Herein, we report a catalyst comprising unique oxygen-bridged Cu binuclear sites (CuOCu-N 4 ) with a Cu···Cu distance of 3.0–3.1 Å and concomitant conventional Cu–N 4 mononuclear sites on hierarchical nitrogen-doped carbon nanocages (hNCNCs). The catalyst exhibits a state-of-the-art low overpotential of 0.19 V (versus reversible hydrogen electrode) for ethanol and an outstanding ethanol Faradaic efficiency of 56.3% at an ultralow potential of −0.30 V, with high-stable Cu active-site structures during the CO 2 RR as confirmed by operando X-ray adsorption fine structure characterization. Theoretical simulations reveal that CuOCu-N 4 binuclear sites greatly enhance the C–C coupling at low potentials, while Cu-N 4 mononuclear sites and the hNCNC support increase the local CO concentration and ethanol production on CuOCu-N 4 . This study provides a convenient approach to advanced Cu binuclear site catalysts…

High entropy alloys (HEAs) are a highly promising class of materials for electrocatalysis as their unique active site distributions break the scaling relations that limit the activity of conventional transition metal catalysts. Existing Bayesian optimization (BO)-based virtual screening approaches focus on catalytic activity as the sole objective and correspondingly tend to identify promising materials that are unlikely to be entropically stabilized. Here, we overcome this limitation with a multiobjective BO framework for HEAs that simultaneously targets activity, cost-effectiveness, and entropic stabilization. With diversity-guided batch selection further boosting its data efficiency, the framework readily identifies numerous promising candidates for the oxygen reduction reaction that strike the balance between all three objectives in hitherto unchartered HEA design spaces comprising up to 10 elements.

Dearomative photocycloaddition of monocyclic arenes is an appealing strategy for comprehending the concept of “escape from flatland”. This brings the replacement of readily available planar aromatic hydrocarbon units with a 3D fused bicyclic core with sp 3 -enriched carbon units. Herein, we outline an intermolecular approach for the dearomative photocycloaddition of phenols. In order to circumvent the ground-state aromaticity and to construct conformationally restrained building blocks, bicyclo[1.1.0]butanes were chosen as coupling partners. This dearomative approach renders straightforward access to a bicyclo[2.1.1]hexane unit fused to a cyclic enone moiety, which further contributed as a synthetic linchpin for postmodifications. Mechanistic experiment advocates for a plausible onset from both the reactants, depending on the redox potential.

Scarce and expensive iridium oxide is still the cornerstone catalyst of polymer-electrolyte membrane electrolyzers for green hydrogen production because of its exceptional stability under industrially relevant oxygen evolution reaction (OER) conditions. Earth-abundant transition metal oxides used for this task, however, show poor long-term stability. We demonstrate here the use of nitrogen-doped cobalt oxide as an effective iridium substitute. The catalyst exhibits a low overpotential of 240 mV at 10 mA cm –2 and negligible activity decay after 1000 h of operation in an alkaline electrolyte. Incorporation of nitrogen dopants not only triggers the OER mechanism switched from the traditional adsorbate evolution route to the lattice oxygen oxidation route but also achieves oxygen nonbonding (O NB ) states as electron donors, thereby preventing structural destabilization. In a practical anion-exchange membrane water electrolyzer, this catalyst at anode delivers a current density of 1000 mA cm –2 at 1.78 V and an electrical efficiency of 47.8 kW-hours per kilogram hydrogen.

High-purity CO 2 rather than dilute CO 2 (15 vol %, CO 2 /N 2 /O 2 = 15:80:5, v/v/v) similar to the flue gas is currently used as the feedstock for the electroreduction of CO 2, and the liquid products are usually mixed up with the cathode electrolyte, resulting in high product separation costs. In this work, we showed that a microporous conductive Bi-based metal–organic framework ( Bi-HHTP, HHTP = 2,3,6,7,10,11-hexahydroxytriphenylene) can not only efficiently capture CO 2 from the dilute CO 2 under high humidity but also catalyze the electroreduction of the adsorbed CO 2 into formic acid with a high current density of 80 mA cm –2 and a Faradaic efficiency of 90% at a very low cell voltage of 2.6 V. Importantly, the performance in a dilute CO 2 atmosphere was close to that under a high-purity CO 2 atmosphere. This is the first catalyst that can maintain exceptional eCO 2 RR performance in the presence of both O 2 and N 2 . Moreover, by using dilute CO 2 as the feedstock, a 1 cm –2 working electrode coating with Bi-HHTP can continuously produce a 200 mM formic acid aqueous solution…

The low ionic conductivity and high desolvation barrier are the main challenges for organic electrolytes in rechargeable metal batteries, especially at low temperatures. The general strategy is to couple strong-solvation and weak-solvation solvents to give balanced physicochemical properties. However, the two challenges described above cannot be overcome at the same time. Herein, we combine two different kinds of weakly solvating solvents with a very low desolvation energy. Interestingly, the synergy between the weak-solvation solvents can break the locally ordered structure at a low temperature to enable higher ionic conductivity compared to those with individual solvents. Thus, facile desolvation and high ionic conductivity are achieved simultaneously, significantly improving the reversibility of electrode reactions at low temperatures. The Na metal anode can be stably cycled at 2 mA cm –2 at −40 °C for 1000 h. The Na||Na 3 V 2 (PO 4 ) 3 cell shows the reversible capacity of 64 mAh g –1 at 0.3 C after 300 cycles at −40 °C, and the capacity retention is 86%. This strategy is…

Constructing fibril morphology has been believed to be an effective method of achieving efficient exciton dissociation and charge transport in organic solar cells (OSCs). Despite emerging endeavors on the fibrillization of organic semiconductors via chemical structural design or physical manipulation, tuning of the fibril geometry, i.e., width and length, for tailored optoelectronic properties remains to be studied in depth. In this work, a series of alkoxythiophene additives featuring varied alkyl side chains connected to thiophene are designed to modulate the growth of fibril aggregates in cutting-edge polymer donors PM6 and D18. Molecular dynamics simulations and morphological characterizations reveal that these additives preferentially locate near and entangle with the side chains of polymer donors, which enhance the conjugated backbone stacking of polymer donors to form nanofibrils with the width expanding from 12.6 to 21.8 nm and the length increasing from 98.3 to 232.7 nm. This nanofibril structure is feasible to acquire efficient exciton dissociation and charge transport…
