Flexible pressure sensors have been widely concerned because of their great application potential in the fields of electronic skin, human–computer interaction, health detection, and so on. In this paper, a flexible pressure sensor is designed, with polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) films with protruding structure as elastic substrate and poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene)/poly(styrenesulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS)/cellulose nanocrystals (CNC) as conductive-sensitive material. The flexible pressure sensor has a wide linear detection range (0–100 kPa), outstanding sensitivity (2.32 kPa –1 ), and stability of more than 2000 cycles. The sensor has been proven to be able to detect a wide range of human movements (finger bending, elbow bending, etc.) and small movements (breathing, pulse, etc.). In addition, the pressure sensor array can detect the pressure distribution and judge the shape of the object. A smart wristband equipped with four flexible pressure sensors is designed. Among them, the k-nearest neighbor (KNN) algorithm is used to classify sensor data to achieve high accuracy (99.52%)…

Microencapsulation is an advanced methodology for the protection, preservation, and/or delivery of active materials in a wide range of industrial sectors, such as pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, fragrances, paints, coatings, detergents, food products, and agrochemicals. Polymeric materials have been extensively used as microcapsule shells to provide appropriate barrier properties to achieve controlled release of the encapsulated active ingredient. However, significant limitations are associated with such capsules, including undesired leaching and the nonbiodegradable nature of the typically used polymers. In addition, the energy cost of manufacturing microcapsules is an important factor to be considered when designing microcapsule systems and the corresponding production processes. Recent factors linked to UN sustainability goals are modifying how such microencapsulation systems should be designed in pursuit of "ideal" microcapsules that are efficient, safe, cost-effective and environmentally friendly. This review provides an overview of advances in microencapsulation, with emphasis on…

Transition metal metaphosphates and noble metal phosphides prepared under similar conditions are potential hybrid catalysts for electrocatalytic water splitting, which is of great significance for H 2 production. Herein, the structure and electrocatalytic activity of different noble metal species (i.e., Rh, Pd, Ir) on CoNiP 4 O 12 nanoarrays have been systematically studied. Due to the different formation energies of noble metal phosphides, the phosphides of Rh (RhP x ) and Pd (PdP x ) as well as the noble metal Ir are obtained under the same phosphorylation conditions perspectively. RhP x /CoNiP 4 O 12 and PdP x /CoNiP 4 O 12 exhibit much better HER activity than Ir/CoNiP 4 O 12 due to the advantages of phosphides. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations reveal that the extraordinary activity of RhP x /CoNiP 4 O 12 originated from the strong affinity to H 2 O and optimal adsorption for H*. The best RhP x /CoNiP 4 O 12 only requires a low overpotential of 30 and 234 mV to deliver 10 mA cm –2 for HER and OER, respectively, and therefore is effective for overall water splitting…

Efficient blue-light-excitable broadband cyan-emitting phosphors may yield full-visible-spectrum white light-emitting diodes (WLEDs) with ultrahigh color rendering (Ra > 95). However, this requires closing the “cyan gap” in the 480–520 nm region of the visible spectrum, which is challenging. Herein, a well-performed cyan-emitting garnet phosphor Ca 2 LuAlGa 2 Si 2 O 12:Ce 3+ (CLAGSO:Ce 3+ ) is reported. Under 430 nm excitation, the optimal CLAGSO:5%Ce 3+ compound exhibits a broadband cyan emission (peak, 496 nm; bandwidth, 102 nm) with a high internal quantum efficiency of 85.6% and an excellent thermal resistance performance (69.1% at 423 K). Importantly, this as-prepared cyan-emitting phosphor provides sufficient cyan emission and enables filling the well-known so-called “cyan gap” between the blue LED chip and the commercial Y 3 Al 5 O 12:Ce 3 + (YAG:Ce 3+ ) yellow phosphor. Impressively, a WLED device fabricated with the optimal CLAGSO:5%Ce 3+ sample shows a low correlated color temperature (4053 K) and an ultrahigh color rendering index (Ra = 96.6), as well as an excellent…

Combining the hydrogen (H 2 ) extraction process and organic oxidation synthesis in photooxidation–reduction reactions mediated by semiconductors is a desirable strategy because rich chemicals are evolved as byproducts along with hydrogen in trifling conditions upon irradiation, which is the only effort. The bifunctional photocatalytic strategy facilitates the feasible formation of a C═O/C─C bond from a large number of compounds containing a X–H (X = C, O) bond; therefore, the production of H 2 can be easily realized without support from third agents like chemical substances, thus providing an eco-friendly and appealing organic synthesis strategy. Among the widely studied semiconductor nanomaterials, Zn x Cd 1– x S has been continuously studied and explored by researchers over the years, and it has attracted much consideration owing to its unique advantages such as adjustable band edge position, rich elemental composition, excellent photoelectric properties, and ability to respond to visible light. Therefore, nanostructures based on Zn x Cd 1– x S have been widely studied as a…

Current treatment for chronic infectious wounds is limited due to severe drug resistance in certain bacteria. Therefore, the development of new composite hydrogels with nonantibiotic antibacterial and pro-wound repair is important. Here, we present a photothermal antibacterial composite hydrogel fabricated with a coating of Fe 2+ cross-linked carboxymethyl chitosan (FeCMCS) following the incorporation of melanin nanoparticles (MNPs) and the Cy RL-QN15 peptide. Various physical and photothermal properties of the hydrogel were characterized. Cell proliferation, migration, cycle, and free-radical scavenging activity were assessed, and the antimicrobial properties of the hydrogel were probed by photothermal therapy. The effects of the hydrogel were validated in a model of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) infection with full-thickness injury. This effect was further confirmed by changes in cytokines associated with inflammation, re-epithelialization, and angiogenesis on the seventh day after wound formation. The MNPs demonstrated robust photothermal conversion…

Thermal batteries are solid-state, thermally activated batteries with long storage times and high reliability. FeS 2 is used as a cathode material commonly, but the high internal resistance and low voltage platform limit the improvement of battery performance. Herein, the 1T-phase vanadium disulfide (VS 2 ) is prepared via the scalable hydrothermal method and applied to thermal battery cathode materials for the first time. 1T-VS 2 lamellar flower clusters have high electronic conductivity (1.583 S cm –1 ) at room temperature, which is 75 times higher than FeS 2 (0.021 S cm –1 ). Mechanism analysis shows that 1T-VS 2 @V 2 O 3 can be formed based on the part of 1T-VS 2 being oxidized to V 2 O 3 at the discharge temperature. Benefiting from the synergistic effect of vanadium sulfide and vanadium oxide as a cathode for thermal batteries enhanced specific capacity (292.4 mA h g –1 ) and mass energy density (572.5 W h kg –1 ) when cutoff voltage is 1 V. Additionally, the discharge results indicate that the cells utilizing 1T-VS 2 cathodes provided a higher voltage platform of 2.11 V than…

This allows simulations ranging from atoms, molecules, and biosystems, to solid and bulk materials, surfaces, nanomaterials, and their interfaces and complex interactions. A recent class of advanced MLIPs, which use equivariant representations and deep graph neural networks, is known as universal models. These models are proposed as foundation models suitable for any system, covering most elements from the periodic table. Current universal MLIPs (UIPs) have been trained with the largest consistent data set available nowadays. However, these are composed mostly of bulk materials' DFT calculations. In this article, we assess the universality of all openly available UIPs, namely MACE, CHGNet, and M3GNet, in a representative task of generalization: calculation of surface energies. We find that the out-of-the-box foundation models have significant shortcomings in this task, with errors correlated to the total energy of surface simulations, having an out-of-domain distance from the training data set. Hybrid piezoelectric/triboelectric nanogenerators combine the merits of piezoelectric nanogenerators (PENGs) and triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs), possessing enhanced electrical output and sensitivity. However, the structures of the majority of hybrid nanogenerators are rather complex in integrating both functions, limiting their practical application in wearable electronics. Herein, we propose to construct a piezoelectric/triboelectric hybrid nanogenerator (PT-NG) with a simple structure based on a composite film to simultaneously achieve the coupling of piezoelectric charge generation and triboelectrification with improved energy conversion efficiency. The composite film consists of electrospun PVDF nanofibers embedded in the surface of the PDMS film, which not only forms a rough nanomorphology on the surface of PDMS but also provides structural protection to the PVDF nanofibers by PDMS during compressive deformation. The results have shown that the PT-NG can generate much higher electrical outputs than individual TENG and PENG devices. The PT-NG devices exhibit a high level…

Broadband near-infrared (NIR) phosphor-converted light-emitting diodes (pc-LEDs) hold promising potential as next-generation compact, portable, and intelligent NIR light sources. Nonetheless, the lack of high-performance broadband NIR phosphors with an emission peak beyond 900 nm has severely hindered the development and widespread application of NIR pc-LEDs. This study presents a strategy for precise control of energy-state coupling in spinel solid solutions composed of Mg x Zn 1– x Ga 2 O 4 to tune the NIR emissions of Cr 3+ activators. By combining crystal field engineering and heavy doping, the Cr 3+ –Cr 3+ ion pair emission from the 4 T 2 state is unlocked, giving rise to unusual broadband NIR emission spanning 650 and 1400 nm with an emission maximum of 913 nm and a full width at half-maximum (fwhm) of 213 nm. Under an optimal Mg/Zn ratio of 4:1, the sample achieves record-breaking performance, including high internal and external quantum efficiency (IQE = 83.9% and EQE = 35.7%) and excellent thermal stability ( I 423 K / I 298 K = 75.8%). The sluggish kinetics of the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) always results in a high overpotential at the anode of water electrolysis and an excessive electric energy consumption, which has been a major obstacle for hydrogen production through water electrolysis. In this study, we present a CoNi-LDH/Fe MOF/NF heterostructure catalyst with nanoneedle array morphology for the OER. In 1.0 M KOH solution, the heterostructure catalyst only required overpotentials of 275 and 305 mV to achieve high current densities of 500 and 1000 mA/cm 2 for OER, respectively. The catalytic activities are much higher than those of the reference single-component CoNi-LDH/NF and Fe MOF/NF catalysts. The improved catalytic performance of the heterostructure catalyst can be ascribed to the synergistic effect of CoNi-LDH and Fe MOF. In particular, when the anodic OER is replaced with the urea oxidation reaction (UOR), which has a relatively lower thermodynamic equilibrium potential and is expected to reduce the cell voltage, the overpotentials required to achieve the same current densities can be reduced by…

Microwave Wireless Power Transfer (MWPT) technology is crucial for emergency power supply during natural disasters and powering off-grid equipment. Traditional antenna arrays, however, suffer from low energy capture efficiency, difficult impedance matching, complex synthetic networks, and intricate manufacturing processes. This paper introduces a microwave energy receiver design utilizing Reflective Phase Gradient Metasurfaces (R-PGMs) and surface wave energy convergence technology. The design leverages the effective plane wave-to-surface wave conversion capability of R-PGMs to transform incident microwave energy into a surface wave mode, which is then efficiently harvested using a circular energy convergence array before being output to a coupling port. By optimizing R-PGM parameters, an ideal 60° phase gradient distribution is achieved, facilitating the focus of surface wave energy via dispersion characteristics. These components are integrated into a hybrid antenna array, complemented by a matched energy output port structure. Numerical simulations show that this array can…

Red-emitting metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are still mostly based on the use of lanthanides or functionalization with red fluorophores. However, production of transition-metal-based MOFs with red-emitting is scarce. This work reports on the synthesis of a novel dual-state red-emitting Zn-based MOF (denoted as UoZ-7) with the capability to detect target molecules in dual state, in solution, and as solid on paper. UoZ-7 gives strong red emission when excited in the solution and in the solid state with 365 nm ultraviolet (UV) lamp irradiation. Coordination-induced emission is the mechanism for the red emission enhancement in the MOF as a restriction of intramolecular rotation occurred to the ligand within the framework structure. UoZ-7 was successfully used for tetracycline (TC) using dual-mode detection, fluorescence-based ratiometry, and color tonality, in the dual state, in solution, and on the paper. TC molecules adsorb on the red-emitting UoZ-7 surface, and a yellow-greenish color emerges due to aggregation-induced emission between TC and UoZ-7. Concurrently, the inner filter…

The cells cycled in the co-solvent electrolyte exhibited a relatively thick and long-term stable CEI (on LNMO), while a slowly growing SEI was determined to form on the Si/graphite. The multi-salt electrolyte offers more inorganic-rich SEI/CEI while also forming the thinnest SEI/CEI observed in this study. Cross-talk is identified in the baseline electrolyte cell, where Si is detected on the cathode, and Mn is detected on the anode. Zeolitic imidazolate framework (ZIF-8) is a promising material for gas separation applications. It also serves as a prototype for numerous ZIFs, including amorphous ones, with a broader range of possible applications, including sensors, catalysis, and lithography. It consists of zinc coordinated with 2-methylimidazolate (2mIm) and has been synthesized with methods ranging from liquid-phase to solvent-free synthesis, which aim to control its crystal size and shape, film thickness and microstructure, and incorporation into nanocomposites. Depending on the synthesis method and postsynthesis treatments, ZIF-8 materials may deviate from the nominal defect-free ZIF-8 crystal structure due to defects like missing 2mIm, missing zinc, and physically adsorbed 2mIm trapped in the ZIF-8 pores, which may alter its performance and stability. Infrared (IR) spectroscopy has been used to assess the presence of defects in ZIF-8 and related materials. However, conflicting interpretations by various authors persist in the literature. However, there remain trade-offs between spectral sensitivity, operating energy, and, more recently, an ability to harbor additional features such as persistent photoconductivity and bidirectional photocurrents for new emerging application areas such as switchable light imaging and filter-less color discrimination. Antibacterial formulations based on zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO NPs) are widely used for antibiotic replacement in veterinary medicine and animal nutrition. However, the undesired environmental impact of ZnO NPs triggers a search for alternative, environmentally safer solutions. Here, we show that Zn 2+ in its ionic form is a more eco-friendly antibacterial, and its biocidal action rivals that of ZnO NPs (<100 nm size), with a minimal biocidal concentration being 41(82) μg mL –1 vs 5 μg mL –1 of ZnO NPs, as determined for 10 3 (10 6 ) CFU mL –1 E. coli . We demonstrate that the biocidal activity of Zn 2+ ions is primarily associated with their uptake by E. coli and spontaneous in vivo transformation into insoluble ZnO nanocomposites at an internal bacterial pH of 7.7. Formed in vivo nanocomposite then damages E. coli membrane and intracellular components from the inside, by forming insoluble biocomposites, whose formation can also trigger ZnO characteristic reactions damaging the cells (e.g., by generation of high-potential reactive oxygen species). In this paper, we propose a novel and wearable optical microfiber intelligent sensor based on a wavy-shaped polymer optical microfiber (WPOMF) for cardiorespiratory and behavioral monitoring of humans. The optical fibers based on polymer materials are prepared into optical microfibers, fully using the advantages of the polymer material and optical microfibers. Biomass-derived hard carbon materials are attractive for sodium-ion batteries due to their abundance, sustainability, and cost-effectiveness. However, their widespread use is hindered by their limited specific capacity. Herein, a type of bamboo-derived hard carbon with adjustable pore structures is developed by employing a ball milling technique to modify the carbon chain length in the precursor. It is observed that the length of the carbon chain in the precursor can effectively control the rearrangement behavior of the carbon layers during the high-temperature carbonization process, resulting in diverse pore structures ranging from closed pores to open pores, which significantly impact the electrochemical properties. The optimized hard carbon with abundant closed pores exhibits a high specific capacity of 356 mAh g –1 at 20 mA g –1, surpassing that of bare hard carbon (243 mAh g –1 ) and hard carbon with abundant open pores (129 mAh g –1 at 20 mA g –1 ). However, the kinetic analysis reveals that hard carbon with open pores shows better sodium-ion diffusion kinetics, indicating…

, has been synthesized for selective and sensitive detection of perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) in mixed aqueous solutions. The MOF shows highly selective fluorescence turn-on detection via the formation of a PFOA-MOF complex. This PFOA-MOF complex formation was confirmed by various spectroscopic techniques. The detection limit of the MOF for PFOA was found to be 1.68 μM in an aqueous suspension. Upon coating onto cellulose paper, the MOF demonstrated a significantly lower detection limit, down to 3.1 nM, which is mainly due to the concentrative effect of solid phase extraction (SPE). This detection limit is lower than the fluorescence sensors based on MOFs previously reported for PFAS detection. The MOF sensor is regenerable and capable of detecting PFOA in drinking and tap water samples. The PDI-MOF-based sensor reported herein represents a novel approach, relying on fluorescence turn-on response, that has not yet been thoroughly investigated for detecting per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) until now.

Actively controlling surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) performance plays a vital role in highly sensitive detection or in situ monitoring. Nevertheless, it is still challenging to achieve further modulation of electromagnetic enhancement and chemical enhancement simultaneously in SERS detection. In this study, a silver nanocavity structure with graphene as a spacer layer is coupled with thermoelectric semiconductor P-type gallium nitride (GaN) to form an electric-field-induced SERS (E-SERS) for dual enhancement. After applying the electric field, the intensity of SERS signals is further enhanced by over 10 times. The thermoelectric field enables fast and reproducible doping of graphene, thereby modulating its Fermi level over a wide range. The thermoelectric field also regulates the position of the plasmon resonance peak of the silver nanocavity structure, rendering synchronous dual electromagnetic and chemical regulation. Additionally, the method enables the trace detection of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). A detailed theoretical analysis is…

Radiodynamic therapy (RDT) has emerged as a promising modality for cancer treatment, offering notable advantages such as deep tissue penetration and radiocatalytic generation of oxygen free radicals. However, the oxygen-dependent nature of RDT imposes limitations on its efficacy in hypoxic conditions, particularly in modulating and eliminating radioresistant immune suppression cells. A novel approach involving the creation of a “super” tetrahedron polyoxometalate (POM) cluster, Fe 12 -POM, has been developed for radiation boosted chemodynamic catalysis to enable oxygen-independent RDT in hypoxic conditions. This nanoscale cluster comprises four P 2 W 15 units functioning as energy antennas, while the Fe 3 core serves as an electron receptor and catalytic center. Under X-ray radiation, a metal-to-metal charge transfer phenomenon occurs between P 2 W 15 and the Fe 3 core, resulting in the valence transition of Fe 3+ to Fe 2+ and a remarkable 139-fold increase in hydroxyl radical generation compared to Fe 12 -POM alone. Balancing the mechanical strength and self-healing performance of polyurethane (PU) remains a significant challenge in achieving excellent self-repairing PU materials. In this study, a self-healing waterborne PU elastomer was designed from a bionic concept by incorporating 2′-deoxythymidine (2′-dT) and isophorone diamine (IPDA) into the polymer chain. The loose stacking of IPDA’s irregular cycloaliphatic structure resulted in the irregular arrangement of urethane bonds in the hard domain. The formation of sextuple hydrogen bonds between 2′-dT and urethane bonds, as well as quadruple hydrogen bonds between urethane bonds themselves, enhanced the mechanical properties of the material. The multiple hydrogen bonds can dissociate, recombine, and dissipate energy, thereby improving the material’s repair capability. The hierarchical self-assembly of hydrogen bonds enabled the PU to achieve a tensile strength of 15.3 MPa and toughness of 100.75 MJ/m 3 . The prepared PU film is highly transparent and has a transmittance of more than 90%. Additionally, it can undergo rapid repair under high…

Consequently, WS 2 nanopetals were grown between the MXene layers and on edges in a one-step solvothermal method, resulting in a 2D–2D nanocomposite with enhanced interactions between WS 2 and Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene. The resulting 2D–2D nanocomposite was thoroughly characterized using X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), Raman, Fourier…

The development of low-cost, efficient catalysts for electrocatalytic water splitting to generate green hydrogen is a hot topic among researchers. Herein, we have developed a highly efficient heterostructure of CoCr-LDH on NiO on nickel foam (NF) for the first time. The preparation strategy follows the simple annealing of a cleaned NF without using any Ni salt precursor, followed by the growth of CoCr-LDH nanosheets over the surface-oxidized NF. The CoCr-LDH/NiO/NF catalyst shows excellent electrocatalytic activity and stability toward oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) in a 1 M KOH solution. For OER, only 253 mV and for HER, only 185 mV overpotentials are required to attain a 50 mA cm –2 current density. Also, the long-term stability of both the OER and HER for 60 h proves its robustness. The turnover frequency value for the OER increased 1.85 times after the heterostructure formation compared to bare CoCr-LDH. The calculated Faradaic efficiency values of 97.4 and 94.75% for the OER and HER revealed the high intrinsic activity of the…

Multivalent ion cross-linking has been used to form hydrogels between sodium alginate (SA) and hyaluronic acid (HA) in previous studies. However, more stable and robust covalent cross-linking is rarely reported. Herein, we present a facile approach to fabricate a SA and HA hydrogel for wound dressings with injectable, good biocompatibility, and high ductility. HA was first reacted with ethylenediamine to graft an amino group. Then, it was cross-linked with oxidized SA with dialdehyde to form hydrogel networks. The dressing can effectively promote cell migration and wound healing. To increase the antibacterial property of the dressing, we successfully loaded tetracycline hydrochloride into the hydrogel as a model drug. The drug can be released slowly in the alkaline environment of chronic wounds, and the hydrogel releases drugs again in the more acidic environment with wound healing, achieving a long-term antibacterial effect. In addition, one-dimensional partial differential equations based on Fickian diffusion with time-varying diffusion coefficients and hydrogel thicknesses were…

High Resolution Image Download MS PowerPoint Slide The development of LiNi 0.8 Mn 0.1 Co 0.1 O 2 (NMC811) as a cathode material for high-energy-density lithium–ion batteries (LIBs) intends to address the driving limitations of electric vehicles. However, the commercialization of this technology has been hindered by poor cycling stability at high cutoff voltages. The potential instability and drastic capacity fade stem from irreversible parasitic side reactions at the electrode–electrolyte interface. To address these issues, a stable nanoscale lithium fluoride (LiF) coating is deposited on the NMC811 electrode via atomic layer deposition. The nanoscale LiF coating diminishes the direct contact between NMC811 and the electrolyte, suppressing the detrimental parasitic reactions. LiF-NMC811 delivers cycling stability superior to uncoated NMC811 with high cutoff voltage for half-cell (3.0–4.6 V vs Li/Li + ) and full-cell (2.8–4.5 V vs graphite) configurations. The structural, morphological, and chemical analyses of the electrodes after cycling show that capacity decline fundamentally…

High Resolution Image Download MS PowerPoint Slide Sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) are emerging as a viable alternative to lithium-ion batteries, reducing the reliance on scarce transition metals. Converting agricultural biomass into SIB anodes can remarkably enhance sustainability in both the agriculture and battery industries. However, the complex and costly synthesis and unsatisfactory electrochemical performance of biomass-derived hard carbon have hindered its further development. Herein, we employed a hydrothermally assisted carbonization process that converts switchgrass to battery-grade hard carbon capable of efficient Na-ion storage. The hydrothermal pretreatment effectively removed hemicellulose and impurities (e.g., lipids and ashes), creating thermally stable precursors suitable to produce hard carbon via carbonization. The elimination of hemicellulose and impurities contributes to a reduced surface area and lower oxygen content. With the modifications, the initial Coulombic efficiency (ICE) and cycling stability are improved concurrently. The optimized hard carbon showcased…

Biobased-functionalized metal-organic frameworks (Bio-FUN-MOFs) stand out from the crowd of candidates in the flame-retardant field due to their multipathway flame-retardant mechanisms and green synthesis processes. However, exploring and designing Bio-FUN-MOFs tend to counteract the problem of compromising the flame-retardant advantages of MOFs themselves, which inevitably results in a waste of resources. Herein, a strategy in which MOFs are ecologically regulated through acid-base balance is presented for controllable preparation of Bio-FUN-MOFs by two birds with one stone, i.e., higher flame-retardant element loading and retention of more MOF structures. Specifically, the buffer layer is created on the periphery of ZIF-67 by weak etching of biobased alkali arginine to resist the excessive etching of ZIF-67 by phytic acid when loading phosphorus source and to preserve the integrity of internal crystals as much as possible. As a proof of concept, ZIF-67 was almost completely etched out by phytic acid in the absence of arginine. The arginine and phytic acid-functionalized ZIF-67…

The traditional methods for creating oxygen vacancies in materials present several challenges and limitations, such as high preparation temperatures, limited oxygen vacancy generation, and morphological destruction, which hinder the application of transition metal oxides in the field of zinc–air batteries (ZABs). In order to address these limitations, we have introduced a pioneering lithium reduction strategy for generating oxygen vacancies in δ-MnO 2 @MXene composite materials. This strategy stands out for its simplicity of implementation, applicability at room temperature, and preservation of the material’s structural integrity. This research demonstrates that aqueous Ov-MnO 2 @MXene-5, with introduced oxygen vacancies, exhibits an outstanding oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) activity with an ORR half-wave potential reaching 0.787 V. DFT calculations have demonstrated that the enhanced activity could be attributed to adjustments in the electronic structure and alterations in adsorption bond lengths. It is important to design materials with high solar reflectivity and high infrared emissivity in atmospheric windows. However, delivering siRNA with site-targeted stability and therapeutic efficacy is still challenging due to the complex and dynamic intestinal microenvironment. Here, based on the functional plant-derived ginger extracellular vesicles (EVs) and porous ZIF-8 nanoparticles, we propose a novel TNF-α siRNA delivery strategy (EVs@ZIF-8@siRNA) for UC targeted therapy. Instead of solely focusing on the eradication of mature biofilms, strategically advantageous measures involve the delay or prevention of biofilm formation on surfaces. Quorum sensing, a communication system enabling bacteria to coordinate their behavior based on population density, plays a pivotal role in biofilm formation for numerous microbial species. Materials possessing antibiofilm properties that target quorum sensing have gained considerable attention for their potential to prevent biofilm formation. While polydopamine (PDA) possesses the surface-independent adhesion property of mussel-binding proteins, significant differences exist between them. Particularly, PDA's short and rigid backbone differs from the long and flexible protein sequence of mussel-binding proteins. Given that adhesion relies on achieving a conformal contact with large surface coverage, PDA has drawbacks as an adhesive. In our study, we investigated the roles of each building block of PDA to build a better understanding of their binding mechanisms. Initially, we anticipated that catecholamine oligomers form specific binding with substrates. However, our study showed that the universal adhesion of PDA is initiated by the solubility limit of growing oligomers by forming agglomerates, complemented by multiple binding modes of catechol. Notably, in the absence of amines, poly(catechol) either remained in solution or formed minor suspensions without any surface coating, underscoring the essential role of amines in the adhesion process by facilitating insoluble aggregate formation. To solve the problem of ice condensation and adhesion, it is urgent to develop new anti-icing and deicing technologies. This study presented the development of a highly efficient photothermal-enhanced superhydrophobic PDMS/Ni@Ti 3 C 2 T x composite film ( m -NMPA) fabricated cost-effectively and straightforwardly. This film was fabricated utilizing PDMS as a hydrophobic agent, adhesive, and surface protector, while Ni@Ti 3 C 2 T x as a magnetic photothermal filler innovatively. Through a simple spraying method, the filler is guided by a strong magnetic field to self-assemble into an eyelash-like microstructure array. The unique structure not only imparts superhydrophobic properties to the surface but also constructs an efficient “light-capturing” architecture. Remarkably, the m -NMPA film demonstrates outstanding superhydrophobic passive anti-icing and efficient photothermal active deicing performance without the use of fluorinated chemicals. The micro-/nanostructure of the film forms a gas layer, significantly delaying the freezing time of water. Particularly under extreme cold…

Highly conductive, transparent, and easily available materials are needed in a wide range of devices, such as sensors, solar cells, and touch screens, as alternatives to expensive and unsustainable materials such as indium tin oxide. Herein, electrospinning was employed to develop fibers of PEDOT:PSS/silver nanowire (AgNW) composites on various substrates, including poly(caprolactone) (PCL), cotton fabric, and Kapton. The influence of AgNWs, as well as the applied voltage of electrospinning on the conductivity of fibers, was thoroughly investigated. The developed fibers showed a sheet resistance of 7 Ω/sq, a conductivity of 354 S/cm, and a transmittance value of 77%, providing excellent optoelectrical properties. Further, the effect of bending on the fibers' electrical properties was analyzed. The sheet resistance of fibers on the PCL substrate increased slightly from 7 to 8 Ω/sq, after 1000 bending cycles. Subsequently, as a proof of concept, the nanofibers were evaluated as electrode material in a triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG)-based energy harvester, and they were observed to…

Water pollution, especially by heavy metals, continues to pose significant challenges, emphasizing the urgency to develop sustainable processes to remove pollutants while developing sustainable materials derived from renewable sources. In the present research, a nanoscale adsorbent was prepared to remove cadmium (Cd(II)) ions from wastewater by hybridizing zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8) with a cellulose nanocrystal (CNC). The prepared nanohybrid exhibited an interconnected structure in which the ZIF-8 particles were connected to each other via CNC nanoneedles. The hybridization of ZIF-8 with CNC caused a significant enhancement in the adsorption performance of the fabricated nanohybrid compared to pure ZIF-8, increasing its adsorption capacity by nearly 36%. The adsorption of ZIF/CNC followed the Langmuir isotherm model and pseudo-second-order kinetics models, remarking homogeneous adsorption onto the surface of ZIF/CNC, where chemisorption controlled the rate of adsorption. The thermodynamic study uncovered that the adsorption is spontaneous, endothermic, and…

Hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ) finds extensive applications in various industries, particularly in the environmental field. The photocatalytic production of H 2 O 2 through the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) or the water oxidation reaction (WOR) offers a promising approach. However, several challenges hinder effective on-site production, such as the rapid electron–hole pair recombination, inefficient visible light utilization, and limited selectivity in H 2 O 2 formation. Thus, developing efficient photocatalysts to overcome these challenges is crucial. This review comprehensively outlines the development of photocatalysts and their modification techniques. It also summarizes and compares the H 2 O 2 yield and apparent quantum yield among various photocatalysts with and without the use of organic sacrificial reagents. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations propose the band structure of photocatalysts and the mechanisms underlying oxygen reduction to H 2 O 2 . Finally, this review explores the potential environmental applications of photocatalytically produced H 2 O 2 . This…

Phenolic resin (PF) is considered a promising precursor of hard carbon (HC) for advanced-performance anodes in sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) because of its facile designability and high residual carbon yield. However, understanding how the structure of PF precursors influences sodium storage in their derived HC remains a significant challenge. Herein, the microstructure of HC is controlled by the degree of cross-linking of resorcinol-benzaldehyde (RB) resin. We reveal that robust molecular cross-linking in RB resin induced by hydrothermal treatment promotes closed-pore formation in the derived HC. The mechanism is devised for the decomposition of a highly cross-linked RB three-dimensional network into randomly stacked short-range graphitic microcrystals during high-temperature carbonization, contributing to the abundant closed pores in the derived HC. In addition, the high cross-linking degree of RB resin endows its derived HC with a small-sized spherical morphology and large interlayer spacing, which improves the rate performance of HC. Consequently, the optimized hydrothermal…

NiFe-layered double hydroxides (NiFe-LDHs), as promising electrocatalysts, have received significant research attention for hydrogen and oxygen generation through water splitting. However, the slow oxidation kinetics of NiFe-LDH, due to the limited number of active sites and the low conductivity, hinders the improvement of the water-splitting efficiency. Therefore, to overcome the obstacles, two-dimensional (2D) SnS was first explored to tailor the prepared NiFe-LDH via the hydrothermal method. A NiFe-LDH/SnS heterojunction is built, which is observed from the microstructural investigations. SnS incorporation could greatly improve the conductivity of the NiFe-LDH sheets, which was reflected by the reduced charge transfer resistance. Moreover, SnS layers modulated the electronic environment around the active sites, favoring the adsorption of intermediates during the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) process, which was verified by density functional theory calculations. A synergistic effect induced by the NiFe-LDH/SnS heterostructure promoted the OER activities in electrical,…

Thermally insulating materials from renewable and readily available resources are in high demand for ecologically beneficial applications. Cellulose aerogels made from lignocellulosic waste have various advantages. However, they are fragile and breakable when bent or compressed. In addition, cellulose aerogels are flammable and weather-sensitive. Hence, to overcome these problems, this work included the preparation of polyurethane (PU)-based cellulose nanofiber (CNF) aerogels that had flexibility, flame retardancy, and thermal insulation. Methyl trimethoxysilane (MTMS) and water-soluble ammonium polyphosphate (APP) were added to improve the cross-linking, hydrophobicity, and flame-retardant properties of aerogels. The flexibility of chemically cross-linked CNF aerogels is enhanced through the incorporation of polyurethane via the wet coagulating process. The aerogels obtained during this study have exhibited low weight (density: 35.3–91.96 kg/m 3 ) together with enhanced hydrophobic properties, flame retardancy, and decreased thermal conductivity (26.7–36.7 mW/m K at 25 °C).…

High Resolution Image Download MS PowerPoint Slide The advancement of anion exchange membranes (AEMs) with superior ionic conductivity has been greatly hindered due to the inherent “trade-off” between membrane swelling and ionic conductivity. To resolve this dilemma, macromolecular covalently cross-linked C-FPVBC- x AEMs were fabricated by combining partially functionalized ether-bond-free polystyrene (FPVBC) with poly(arylene piperidinium). The results from atomic force microscopy reveal that an increase in the ratio of FPVBC promotes the fabrication of microphase separation morphology, resulting in a high ionic conductivity of 40.15 mS cm –1 (30 °C) for the C-FPVBC-1.7 membrane. Molecular dynamics simulations further examine the ionic conduction effect of cross-linked AEMs. Besides, the unique cross-linking structure significantly improves mechanical and alkaline stability. After treatment in 1 M KOH at 50 °C for 1200 h, the C-FPVBC-1.7 membrane shows only a 6.9% decrease in conductivity. The C-FPVBC-1.7 AEM-based water electrolyzer achieves a high current density of 890 mA cm –2…

With increasingly severe metal corrosion, coating preparation with high-performance corrosion protection has attracted more attention. Herein, the encapsulation of the corrosion inhibitor 8-hydroxyquinoline (8-HQ) as well as the self-healing agent linseed oil (LO) in polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and chitosan (CS) shells were realized by coaxial electrospinning, which was recorded as PVA/CS@LO/8-HQ core-shell nanofibers. PVA/CS@LO/8-HQ nanofibers were employed to promote the high-performance corrosion protection of the epoxy coating. The anticorrosion mechanism was that the change of the local pH on the metal surface stimulated the release of 8-HQ from the nanofibers, which were then chelated with iron ions to form a complex. When cracks occurred and caused rupture of the nanofibers, LO was released and reacted with oxygen to cure them so that the cracks could be healed autonomously. The dynamic potential polarization curves showed that the corrosion inhibition efficiency of the compound inhibitor LO + 8-HQ reached 87.54%, 90.31%, and 85.57% at pH = 3, 7, and 11, respectively, higher than…

Significant progress has been made in designing advanced membranes; however, persistent challenges remain due to their reduced permeation rates and a propensity for substantial fouling. These factors continue to pose significant barriers to the effective utilization of membranes in the separation of oil-in-water emulsions. Metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) are considered promising materials for such applications; however, they encounter three key challenges when applied to the separation of oil from water: (a) lack of water stability; (b) difficulty in producing defect-free membranes; and (c) unresolved issue of stabilizing the MOF separating layer on the ceramic membrane (CM) support. In this study, a defect-free hydrolytically stable zirconium-based MOF separating layer was formed through a two-step method: first, by in situ growth of UiO-66-NH 2 MOF into the voids of polydopamine (PDA)-functionalized CM during the solvothermal process, and then by facilitating the self-assembly of UiO-66-NH 2 with PDA using a pressurized dead-end assembly. Substantial emissions of CO 2 have presented formidable challenges for global climate dynamics. Electrochemical reduction of CO 2 to produce formic acid (HCOOH) is considered to be a promising approach for achieving carbon neutrality. Nevertheless, the development of a catalyst exhibiting both high catalytic activity and selectivity toward desired products remains an arduous task. Herein, we report the synthesis of a unique porous bismuth-based MOF (Bi-BTC) through microwave-assisted agitation. The Bi-BTC MOF has a good catalytic performance in electrochemical CO 2 RR to formate products. At −0.9 V (vs RHE) potential, the Faradaic efficiency of formate can reach 96%, and the current density of the CO 2 RR is 25 mA/cm 2 . Bi-BTC also exhibits good electrochemical stability. FE formate and current density were maintained for 24 h with almost no attenuation. It was found that Bi-BTC was reconstructed in the CO 2 RR process. The shape of nanocolumn before electrolysis is transformed into an ultrathin nanosheet. The soft and hard acid–base theory (HSAB) proves that the reason for the…

Up to now, metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) with open nanostructures have shown outstanding capabilities in trapping smoke particles compared to the original MOFs. However, only a few MOF-based strategies have been reported to synthesize hierarchical porous cages thus far, which are mainly restricted to environmentally unfriendly wet-chemical liquid methods. Herein, as a proof-of-concept, a gas-steamed metal–organic framework approach was designed to fabricate a series of cheeselike open cages with hierarchical porosity. Briefly, zeolitic imidazolate framework-67 (ZIF-67) and phytic acid were employed as precursor and etchant, respectively. Abandoning the conventional wet-chemical method, the coordination bond of ZIF-67 was cleaved by acidic steam, forming an open framework with a high specific surface area and a hierarchical porous structure. The universality of this method was also confirmed by the selection of different etchants. Impressively, they also show outstanding fume-toxic adsorption capability and labyrinth effects based on abundant and complex porous channels. At only 5…
