A new polymer donor (PBDB-T-SF) and a new small molecule acceptor (IT-4F) for fullerene-free organic solar cells (OSCs) were designed and synthesized. The influences of fluorination on the absorption spectra, molecular energy levels, and charge mobilities of the donor and acceptor were systematically studied. The PBDB-T-SF:IT-4F-based OSC device showed a record high efficiency of 13.1%, and an efficiency of over 12% can be obtained with a thickness of 100-200 nm, suggesting the promise of fullerene-free OSCs in practical applications.

Rechargeable aqueous Zn/MnO 2 battery chemistry in a neutral or mildly acidic electrolyte has attracted extensive attention recently because all the components (anode, cathode, and electrolyte) in a Zn/MnO 2 battery are safe, abundant, and sustainable. However, the reaction mechanism of the MnO 2 cathode remains a topic of discussion. Herein, we design a highly reversible aqueous Zn/MnO 2 battery where the binder-free MnO 2 cathode was fabricated by in situ electrodeposition of MnO 2 on carbon fiber paper in mild acidic ZnSO 4 +MnSO 4 electrolyte. Electrochemical and structural analysis identify that the MnO 2 cathode experience a consequent H + and Zn 2+ insertion/extraction process with high reversibility and cycling stability. To our best knowledge, it is the first report on rechargeable aqueous batteries with a consequent ion-insertion reaction mechanism.

We develop a host-guest strategy to construct an electrocatalyst with Fe-Co dual sites embedded on N-doped porous carbon and demonstrate its activity for oxygen reduction reaction in acidic electrolyte. Our catalyst exhibits superior oxygen reduction reaction performance, with comparable onset potential ( E onset, 1.06 vs 1.03 V) and half-wave potential ( E 1/2, 0.863 vs 0.858 V) than commercial Pt/C. The fuel cell test reveals (Fe,Co)/N-C outperforms most reported Pt-free catalysts in H 2 /O 2 and H 2 /air. In addition, this cathode catalyst with dual metal sites is stable in a long-term operation with 50 000 cycles for electrode measurement and 100 h for H 2 /air single cell operation. Density functional theory calculations reveal the dual sites is favored for activation of O-O, crucial for four-electron oxygen reduction.

It remains a grand challenge to replace platinum group metal (PGM) catalysts with earth-abundant materials for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) in acidic media, which is crucial for large-scale deployment of proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs). Here, we report a high-performance atomic Fe catalyst derived from chemically Fe-doped zeolitic imidazolate frameworks (ZIFs) by directly bonding Fe ions to imidazolate ligands within 3D frameworks. Although the ZIF was identified as a promising precursor, the new synthetic chemistry enables the creation of well-dispersed atomic Fe sites embedded into porous carbon without the formation of aggregates. The size of catalyst particles is tunable through synthesizing Fe-doped ZIF nanocrystal precursors in a wide range from 20 to 1000 nm followed by one-step thermal activation. Similar to Pt nanoparticles, the unique size control without altering chemical properties afforded by this approach is able to increase the number of PGM-free active sites. The best ORR activity is measured with the catalyst at a size of 50 nm. Further size…

Conventionally, ceramics-based materials, fabricated by high-temperature solid-phase reaction and sintering, are preferred as bone scaffolds in hard-tissue engineering because of their tunable biocompatibility and mechanical properties. However, their possible biomedical applications have rarely been considered, especially the cancer phototherapeutic applications in both the first and second near-infrared light (NIR-I and NIR-II) biowindows. In this work, we explore, for the first time as far as we know, a novel kind of 2D niobium carbide (Nb 2 C), MXene, with highly efficient in vivo photothermal ablation of mouse tumor xenografts in both NIR-I and NIR-II windows. The 2D Nb 2 C nanosheets (NSs) were fabricated by a facile and scalable two-step liquid exfoliation method combining stepwise delamination and intercalation procedures. The ultrathin, lateral-nanosized Nb 2 C NSs exhibited extraordinarily high photothermal conversion efficiency (36.4% at NIR-I and 45.65% at NIR-II), as well as high photothermal stability. Single-atom catalysts often exhibit unexpected catalytic activity for many important chemical reactions because of their unique electronic and geometric structures with respect to their bulk counterparts. Herein we adopt metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) to assist the preparation of a catalyst containing single Ni sites for efficient electroreduction of CO 2 . The synthesis is based on ionic exchange between Zn nodes and adsorbed Ni ions within the cavities of the MOF. This single-atom catalyst exhibited an excellent turnover frequency for electroreduction of CO 2 (5273 h –1 ), with a Faradaic efficiency for CO production of over 71.9% and a current density of 10.48 mA cm –2 at an overpotential of 0.89 V. Our findings present some guidelines for the rational design and accurate modulation of nanostructured catalysts at the atomic scale.

The chemical transformation of CO 2 not only mitigates the anthropogenic CO 2 emission into the Earth’s atmosphere but also produces carbon compounds that can be used as precursors for the production of chemicals and fuels. The activation and conversion of CO 2 can be achieved on multifunctional catalytic sites available at the metal/oxide interface by taking advantage of the synergy between the metal nanoparticles and oxide support. Herein, we look at the recent progress in mechanistic studies of CO 2 hydrogenation to C1 (CO, CH 3 OH, and CH 4 ) compounds on metal/oxide catalysts. On this basis, we are able to provide a better understanding of the complex reaction network, grasp the capability of manipulating structure and combination of metal and oxide at the interface in tuning selectivity, and identify the key descriptors to control the activity and, in particular, the selectivity of catalysts. Finally, we also discuss challenges and future research opportunities for tuning the selective conversion of CO 2 on metal/oxide catalysts.

Organometallic complexes with metal–nitrogen/carbon (M–N/C) coordination are the most important alternatives to precious metal catalysts for oxygen reduction and evolution reactions (ORR and OER) in energy conversion devices. Here, we designed and developed a range of molecule-level graphitic carbon nitride (g-C 3 N 4 ) coordinated transition metals (M–C 3 N 4 ) as a new generation of M–N/C catalysts for these oxygen electrode reactions. As a proof-of-concept example, we conducted theoretical evaluation and experimental validation on a cobalt–C 3 N 4 catalyst with a desired molecular configuration, which possesses comparable electrocatalytic activity to that of precious metal benchmarks for the ORR and OER in alkaline media. The correlation of experimental and computational results confirms that this high activity originates from the precise M–N 2 coordination in the g-C 3 N 4 matrix. Moreover, the reversible ORR/OER activity trend for a wide variety of M−C 3 N 4 complexes has been constructed to provide guidance for the molecular design of this promising class of catalysts.

The production of ammonia (NH 3 ) from molecular dinitrogen (N 2 ) under mild conditions is one of the most attractive and challenging processes in chemistry. Here by means of density functional theory (DFT) computations, we systematically investigated the potential of single transition metal atoms (Sc to Zn, Mo, Ru, Rh, Pd, and Ag) supported on the experimentally available defective boron nitride (TM–BN) monolayer with a boron monovacancy as a N 2 fixation electrocatalyst. Our computations revealed that the single Mo atom supported by a defective BN nanosheet exhibits the highest catalytic activity for N 2 fixation at room temperature through an enzymatic mechanism with a quite low overpotential of 0.19 V. The high spin-polarization, selective stabilization of N 2 H* species, or destabilizing NH 2 * species are responsible for the high activity of the Mo-embedded BN nanosheet for N 2 fixation. This finding opens a new avenue of NH 3 production by single-atom electrocatalysts under ambient conditions.

Here we present the results of experimental and theoretical studies aimed at elucidating the effects of electrolyte cation size on the intrinsic activity and selectivity of metal catalysts for the reduction of CO 2 . Experiments were conducted under conditions where the influence of electrolyte polarization is minimal in order to show that cation size affects the intrinsic rates of formation of certain reaction products, most notably for HCOO –, C 2 H 4, and C 2 H 5 OH over Cu(100)- and Cu(111)-oriented thin films, and for CO and HCOO – over polycrystalline Ag and Sn. Interpretation of the findings for CO 2 reduction was informed by studies of the reduction of glyoxal and CO, key intermediates along the reaction pathway to final products. Density functional theory calculations show that the alkali metal cations influence the distribution of products formed as a consequence of…

To this end, a binary nanohybrid (BP/CN) of two-dimensional (2D) black phosphorus (BP) and graphitic carbon nitride (CN) was designed and used as a metal-free photocatalyst for the first time. During irradiation of BP/CN in water with >420 and >780 nm light, solid H 2 gas was generated, respectively. Owing to the interfacial interaction between BP and CN, efficient charge transfer occurred, thereby enhancing the photocatalytic performance. The efficient charge-trapping and transfer processes were thoroughly investigated with time-resolved diffuse reflectance spectroscopic measurement. Herein, we present a novel approach for the development of organic rechargeable battery cathodes in which three distinct redox-active COFs were successfully prepared and delaminated into 2D few-layer nanosheets. Compared with the pristine COFs, the exfoliated COFs with shorter Li + diffusion pathways allow a significant higher utilization efficiency of redox sites and faster kinetics for lithium storage. Unlike diffusion-controlled manners in the bulk COFs, the redox reactions in ECOFs are mainly dominated by charge transfer process. The capacity and potential are further engineered by reticular design of COFs without altering the underlying topology. Specifically, DAAQ-ECOF exhibits excellent rechargeability (98% capacity retention after 1800 cycles) and fast charge–discharge ability (74% retention at 500 mA g –1 as compared to at 20 mA g –1 ). DABQ-ECOF shows a specific capacity of 210 mA h g –1 and a voltage plateau of 2.8 V.

The rates for up-conversion intersystem crossing (UISC) from the T 1 state to the S 1 state are calculated for a series of organic emitters with an emphasis on thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) materials. Both the spin–orbit coupling and the energy difference between the S 1 and T 1 states (Δ E ST ) are evaluated, at the density functional theory (DFT) and time-dependent DFT levels. The calculated UISC rates and Δ E ST values are found to be in good agreement with available experimental data. Our results underline that small Δ E ST values and sizable spin–orbit coupling matrix elements have to be simultaneously realized in order to facilitate UISC and ultimately TADF. Importantly, the spatial separation of the highest occupied and lowest unoccupied molecular orbitals of the emitter, a widely accepted strategy for the design of TADF molecules, does not necessarily lead to a sufficient reduction in Δ E ST; in fact, either a significant charge-transfer (CT) contribution to the T 1 state or a minimal energy difference between the local-excitation and charge-transfer…

However, their low room-temperature conductivity and poor mechanical and thermal properties still hinder their applications. Here, we use Li 6.75 La 3 Zr 1.75 Ta 0.25 O 12 (LLZTO) ceramics to trigger structural modification of poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) polymer electrolyte. Abstract Although halide perovskite nanocrystals (NCs) are promising materials for optoelectronic devices, they suffer severely from chemical and phase instabilities. Moreover, the common capping ligands like oleic acid and oleylamine that encapsulate the NCs will form an insulating layer, precluding their utility in optoelectronic devices. To overcome these limitations, we develop a postsynthesis passivation process for CsPbI3 NCs by using a bidentate ligand, namely 2,2′-iminodibenzoic acid. Our passivated NCs exhibit narrow red photoluminescence with exceptional quantum yield (close to unity) and substantially improved stability. The passivated NCs enabled us to realize red light-emitting diodes (LEDs) with 5.02% external quantum efficiency and 748 cd/m2 luminance, surpassing by far LEDs made from the nonpassivated NCs.

Photothermal agents can harvest light energy and convert it into heat, offering a targeted and remote-controlled way to destroy carcinomatous cells and tissues. Inspired by the biological organization of polypeptides and porphyrins in living systems, here we have developed a supramolecular strategy to fabricate photothermal nanodots through peptide-modulated self-assembly of photoactive porphyrins. The self-assembling nature of porphyrins induces the formation of J-aggregates as substructures of the nanodots, and thus enables the fabrication of nanodots with totally inhibited fluorescence emission and singlet oxygen production, leading to a high light-to-heat conversion efficiency of the nanodots. The peptide moieties not only provide aqueous stability for the nanodots through hydrophilic interactions, but also provide a spatial barrier between porphyrin groups to inhibit the further growth of nanodots through the strong π-stacking interactions. Thermographic imaging reveals that the conversion of light to heat based on the nanodots is efficient in vitro and in vivo, enabling the…

Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) are of great interest for many potential applications because of their extraordinary electronic, mechanical and structural properties. However, issues of chaotic staking, high cost and high energy dissipation in the synthesis of CNTs remain to be resolved. Here we develop a facile, general and high-yield strategy for the oriented formation of CNTs from metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) through a low-temperature (as low as 430 °C) pyrolysis process. The selected MOF crystals act as a single precursor for both nanocatalysts and carbon sources. The key to the formation of CNTs is obtaining small nanocatalysts with high activity during the pyrolysis process. This method is successfully extended to obtain various oriented CNT-assembled architectures by modulating the corresponding MOFs, which further homogeneously incorporate heteroatoms into the CNTs. Specifically, nitrogen-doped CNT-assembled hollow structures exhibit excellent performances in both energy conversion and storage. On the basis of experimental analyses and density functional theory simulations, these…

Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) are crystalline, highly porous, two- or three-dimensional polymers with tunable topology and functionalities. Because of their higher chemical stabilities in comparison to their boron-linked counterparts, imine or β-ketoenamine linked COFs have been utilized for a broad range of applications, including gas storage, heterogeneous catalysis, energy storage devices, or proton-conductive membranes. Herein, we report the synthesis of highly porous and chemically stable acetylene (-C≡C-) and diacetylene (-C≡C-C≡C-) functionalized β-ketoenamine COFs, which have been applied as photocatalyst for hydrogen generation from water. It is shown that the diacetylene moieties have a profound effect as the diacetylene-based COF largely outperforms the acetylene-based COF in terms of photocatalytic activity. As a combined effect of high porosity, easily accessible diacetylene (-C≡C-C≡C-) functionalities and considerable chemical stability, an efficient and recyclable heterogeneous photocatalytic hydrogen generation is achieved.

Tin and lead iodide perovskite semiconductors of the composition AMX 3, where M is a metal and X is a halide, are leading candidates for high efficiency low cost tandem photovoltaics, in part because they have band gaps that can be tuned over a wide range by compositional substitution. We experimentally identify two competing mechanisms through which the A-site cation influences the band gap of 3D metal halide perovskites. Using a smaller A-site cation can distort the perovskite lattice in two distinct ways: by tilting the MX 6 octahedra or by simply contracting the lattice isotropically. The former effect tends to raise the band gap, while the latter tends to decrease it. Lead iodide perovskites show an increase in band gap upon partial substitution of the larger formamidinium with the smaller cesium, due to octahedral tilting. Perovskites based on tin, which is slightly smaller than lead, show the opposite trend: they show no octahedral tilting upon Cs-substitution but only a contraction of the lattice, leading to progressive reduction of the band gap. We outline a strategy to…

Ammonia (NH 3 ) is an essential chemical in modern society. It is currently manufactured by the Haber–Bosch process using H 2 and N 2 under extremely high-pressure (>200 bar) and high-temperature (>673 K) conditions. Photocatalytic NH 3 production from water and N 2 at atmospheric pressure and room temperature is ideal. Several semiconductor photocatalysts have been proposed, but all suffer from low efficiency. Here we report that a commercially available TiO 2 with a large number of surface oxygen vacancies, when photoirradiated by UV light in pure water with N 2, successfully produces NH 3 . The active sites for N 2 reduction are the Ti 3+ species on the oxygen vacancies. These species act as adsorption sites for N 2 and trapping sites for the photoformed conduction band electrons. These properties therefore promote efficient reduction of N 2 to NH 3 . The solar-to-chemical energy conversion efficiency is 0.02%, which is the highest efficiency among the early reported photocatalytic systems. This noble-metal-free TiO 2 system therefore shows a potential as a new artificial…

However, their practical application relies on the development of inexpensive and efficient catalysts to replace precious platinum catalysts. We previously reported that HER can be largely enhanced through finely tuning the energy level of molybdenum sulfide (MoS 2 ) by hot electron injection from plasmonic gold nanoparticles. Under this inspiration, herein, we propose a strategy to improve the HER performance of MoS 2 by engineering its energy level via direct transition-metal doping. A turnover of 15.44 s –1 at 300 mV overpotential is achieved, which by far exceeds the activity of MoS 2 catalysts reported. We report low-dimensional Sn perovskites that exhibit markedly enhanced air stability in comparison with their 3D counterparts. Here, we report a new plasmonic catalyst of Au supported on BiOCl containing oxygen vacancies. It photocatalyzes selective benzyl alcohol oxidation with O 2 under visible light through synergistic action of plasmonic hot electrons and holes. Oxygen vacancies on BiOCl facilitate the trapping and transfer of plasmonic hot electrons to adsorbed O 2, producing •O 2 – radicals, while plasmonic hot holes remaining on the Au surface mildly oxidize benzyl alcohol to corresponding carbon-centered radicals. The hypothesized concerted ring addition between these two radical species on the BiOCl surface highly favors the production of benzaldehyde along with an unexpected oxygen atom transfer from O 2 to the product. Cu is the only monometallic catalyst that produces a large amount of hydrocarbon fuels during the CO 2 electrochemical reduction reaction (CO 2 RR). However, the CO 2 RR mechanism and the impact of electrolyte are unclear. In this communication, two important issues regarding the CO 2 RR on Cu surfaces are studied: (1) the direct observation on reaction intermediates and (2) the role of the electrolyte (KHCO 3 ) in the reaction. Surface-enhanced infrared absorption spectroscopy allows direct observation of several reaction intermediates that have never been detected before, except for the commonly detected CO. Another important finding is that CO 2 molecules are mediated to the Cu surface via their equilibrium with bicarbonate anions instead of direct adsorption from the solution. These results shed light on the full understanding of the CO 2 RR on Cu surfaces and developing more advanced catalysts.

Additionally, the luminescence decay kinetics transform from multiexponential decays typical of nanocrystalline semiconductors with a distribution of trap sites, to a monoexponential decay, typical of single energy level emitters. We have herein investigated Sn 4 P 3 /C composite as a novel anode material for PIBs. The electrode delivered a reversible capacity of 384.8 mA h g –1 at 50 mA g –1 and a good rate capability of 221.9 mA h g –1, even at 1 A g –1 . In this work, we designed and synthesized Pt/PCN-224(M) composites by integration of Pt nanocrystals and porphyrinic metal–organic frameworks (MOFs), PCN-224(M). The composites exhibit excellent catalytic performance in the photo-oxidation of aromatic alcohols by 1 atm O 2 at ambient temperature, based on a synergetic photothermal effect and singlet oxygen production. Additionally, in opposition to the function of the Schottky junction, injection of hot electrons from plasmonic Pt into PCN-224(M) would lower the electron density of the Pt surface, which thus is tailorable for the optimized catalytic performance via the competition between the Schottky junction and the plasmonic effect by altering the light intensity. To the best of our knowledge, this is not only an unprecedented report on singlet oxygen-engaged selective oxidation of aromatic alcohols to aldehydes but also the first report on photothermal effect of MOFs.

We report evidence for different types of Fe species within Ni(Fe)O x H y — those that are rapidly incorporated into the Ni oxyhydroxide from Fe cations in solution (and that are likely at edges or defects) and are responsible for the enhanced OER activity, and those substituting for bulk Ni that modulate the observed Ni voltammetry. These results suggest that the exceptional OER activity of Ni(Fe)O x H y does not depend on Fe in the bulk or on average electrochemical properties of the Ni cations measured by voltammetry, and instead emphasize the role of the local structure.

These properties can be tailored by not only controlling the size and shape of the NCs but also postsynthetic composition tuning through topotactic anion exchange. In contrast, property control by cation exchange is still underdeveloped for colloidal CsPbX3 NCs. Therapeutic effects of photodynamic therapy (PDT) are limited by cancer hypoxia because the PDT process is dependent on O 2 concentration. Herein, we design biocompatible manganese ferrite nanoparticle-anchored mesoporous silica nanoparticles (MFMSNs) to overcome hypoxia, consequently enhancing the therapeutic efficiency of PDT. By exploiting the continuous O 2 -evolving property of MnFe 2 O 4 nanoparticles through the Fenton reaction, MFMSNs relieve hypoxic condition using a small amount of nanoparticles and improve therapeutic outcomes of PDT for tumors in vivo . In addition, MFMSNs exhibit T 2 contrast effect in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), allowing in vivo tracking of MFMSNs. These findings demonstrate great potential of MFMSNs for theranostic agents in cancer therapy.

Much effort has been devoted in the development of efficient catalysts for electrochemical reduction of CO 2 . Molecular level understanding of electrode-mediated process, particularly the role of bicarbonate in increasing CO 2 reduction rates, is still lacking due to the difficulty of directly probing the electrochemical interface. We developed a protocol to observe normally invisible reaction intermediates with a surface enhanced spectroscopy by applying square-wave potential profiles. Further, we demonstrate that bicarbonate, through equilibrium exchange with dissolved CO 2, rather than the supplied CO 2, is the primary source of carbon in the CO formed at the Au electrode by a combination of in situ spectroscopic, isotopic labeling, and mass spectroscopic investigations. We propose that bicarbonate enhances the rate of CO production on Au by increasing the effective concentration of dissolved CO 2 near the electrode surface through rapid equilibrium between bicarbonate and dissolved CO 2 .

Electrochemical reduction of CO 2 (CO 2 RR) provides great potential for intermittent renewable energy storage. This study demonstrates a predominant shape-dependent electrocatalytic reduction of CO 2 to CO on triangular silver nanoplates (Tri-Ag-NPs) in 0.1 M KHCO 3 . Compared with similarly sized Ag nanoparticles (SS-Ag-NPs) and bulk Ag, Tri-Ag-NPs exhibited an enhanced current density and significantly improved Faradaic efficiency (96.8%) and energy efficiency (61.7%), together with a considerable durability (7 days). Additionally, CO starts to be observed at an ultralow overpotential of 96 mV, further confirming the superiority of Tri-Ag-NPs as a catalyst for CO 2 RR toward CO formation. Density functional theory calculations reveal that the significantly enhanced electrocatalytic activity and selectivity at lowered overpotential originate from the shape-controlled structure. This not only provides the optimum edge-to-corner ratio but also dominates at the facet of Ag(100) where it requires lower energy to initiate the rate-determining step. Here we report a precise control of isolated single ruthenium site supported on nitrogen-doped porous carbon (Ru SAs/N–C) through a coordination-assisted strategy. This synthesis is based on the utilization of strong coordination between Ru 3+ and the free amine groups (−NH 2 ) at the skeleton of a metal–organic framework, which plays a critical role to access the atomically isolated dispersion of Ru sites. Without the assistance of the amino groups, the Ru precursor is prone to aggregation during the pyrolysis process, resulting in the formation of Ru clusters. The atomic dispersion of Ru on N-doped carbon can be verified by the spherical aberration correction electron microscopy and X-ray absorption fine structure measurements. Most importantly, this single Ru sites with single-mind N coordination can serve as a semihomogeneous catalyst to catalyze effectively chemoselective hydrogenation of functionalized quinolones.

The pre-designable porous structures found in covalent organic frameworks (COFs) render them attractive as a molecular platform for addressing environmental issues such as removal of toxic heavy metal ions from water. However, a rational structural design of COFs in this aspect has not been explored. Here we report the rational design of stable COFs for Hg(II) removal through elaborate structural design and control over skeleton, pore size, and pore walls. The resulting framework is stable under strong acid and base conditions, possesses high surface area, has large mesopores, and contains dense sulfide functional termini on the pore walls. These structural features work together in removing Hg(II) from water and achieve a benchmark system that combines capacity, efficiency, effectivity, applicability, selectivity, and reusability. These results suggest that COFs offer a powerful platform for tailor-made structural design to cope with various types of pollution.

Precise control of elemental configurations within multimetallic nanoparticles (NPs) could enable access to functional nanomaterials with significant performance benefits. This can be achieved down to the atomic level by the disorder-to-order transformation of individual NPs. Here, by systematically controlling the ordering degree, we show that the atomic ordering transformation, applied to AuCu NPs, activates them to perform as selective electrocatalysts for CO 2 reduction. In contrast to the disordered alloy NP, which is catalytically active for hydrogen evolution, ordered AuCu NPs selectively converted CO 2 to CO at faradaic efficiency reaching 80%. CO formation could be achieved with a reduction in overpotential of ∼200 mV, and catalytic turnover was enhanced by 3.2-fold. In comparison to those obtained with a pure gold catalyst, mass activities could be improved as well. Atomic-level structural investigations revealed three atomic gold layers over the intermetallic core to be sufficient for enhanced catalytic behavior, which is further supported by DFT analysis.

The electrochemical reduction of carbon dioxide using renewably generated electricity offers a potential means for producing fuels and chemicals in a sustainable manner. To date, copper has been found to be the most effective catalyst for electrochemically reducing carbon dioxide to products such as methane, ethene, and ethanol. Unfortunately, the current efficiency of the process is limited by competition with the relatively facile hydrogen evolution reaction. Since multi-carbon products are more valuable precursors to chemicals and fuels than methane, there is considerable interest in modifying copper to enhance the multi-carbon product selectivity. Here, we report our investigations of electrochemical carbon dioxide reduction over CuAg bimetallic electrodes and surface alloys, which we find to be more selective for the formation of multi-carbon products than pure copper. This selectivity enhancement is a result of the selective suppression of hydrogen evolution, which occurs due to compressive strain induced by the formation of a CuAg surface alloy. Furthermore, we report that…

Tin (Sn) is known to be a good catalyst for electrochemical reduction of CO 2 to formate in 0.5 M KHCO 3 . But when a thin layer of SnO 2 is coated over Cu nanoparticles, the reduction becomes Sn-thickness dependent: the thicker (1.8 nm) shell shows Sn-like activity to generate formate whereas the thinner (0.8 nm) shell is selective to the formation of CO with the conversion Faradaic efficiency (FE) reaching 93% at −0.7 V (vs reversible hydrogen electrode (RHE)). Theoretical calculations suggest that the 0.8 nm SnO 2 shell likely alloys with trace of Cu, causing the SnO 2 lattice to be uniaxially compressed and favors the production of CO over formate. The report demonstrates a new strategy to tune NP catalyst selectivity for the electrochemical reduction of CO 2 via the tunable core/shell structure.

Enzyme-mimicking nanomaterials (nanozymes) are more cost-effective and robust than protein enzymes, but they lack specificity. Herein, molecularly imprinted polymers were grown on Fe 3 O 4 nanozymes with peroxidase-like activity to create substrate binding pockets. Electron microscopy confirmed a shell of nanogel. By imprinting with an adsorbed substrate, moderate specificity was achieved with neutral monomers. Further introducing charged monomers led to nearly 100-fold specificity for the imprinted substrate over the nonimprinted compared to that of bare Fe 3 O 4 . Selective substrate binding was further confirmed by isothermal titration calorimetry. The same method was also successfully applied for imprinting on gold nanoparticles (peroxidase mimics) and nanoceria (oxidase mimics). Molecular imprinting furthers the functional enzyme mimicking aspect of nanozymes, and such hybrid materials will find applications in biosensor development, separation, environmental remediation, and drug delivery.

In this work, we provide direct evidence that the major quenching process at high dopant concentrations is the energy migration to the surface (i.e., surface quenching) as opposed to the common misconception of cross-relaxation between dopant ions. We show that after an inert epitaxial shell growth, erbium (Er 3+ ) concentrations as high as 100 mol% in NaY(Er)F 4 /NaLuF 4 core/shell nanocrystals enhance the emission intensity of both upconversion and downshifted luminescence across different excitation wavelengths (980, 800, and 658 nm), with negligible concentration quenching effects. Our results highlight the strong coupling of concentration and surface quenching effects in colloidal lanthanide-doped nanocrystals, and that inert epitaxial shell growth can overcome concentration quenching. These fundamental insights into the photophysical…

The ability to prepare ultrathin two-dimensional (2D) covalent organic framework (COF) nanosheets (NSs) in high yield is of great importance for the further exploration of their unique properties and potential applications. Herein, by elaborately designing and choosing two flexible molecules with C 3 v molecular symmetry as building units, a novel imine-linked COF, namely, TPA-COF, with a hexagonal layered structure and sheet-like morphology, is synthesized. Since the flexible building units are integrated into the COF skeletons, the interlayer stacking becomes weak, resulting in the easy exfoliation of TPA-COF into ultrathin 2D NSs. Impressively, for the first time, the detailed structural information, i.e., the pore channels and individual building units in the NSs, is clearly visualized by using the recently developed low-dose imaging technique of transmission electron microscopy (TEM). As a proof-of-concept application, the obtained ultrathin COF NSs are used as a novel fluorescence sensing platform for the highly sensitive and selective detection of DNA.

Emissive molecules comprising a donor and an acceptor bridged by 9,9-dimethylxanthene, were studied (XPT, XCT, and XtBuCT). The structures position the donor and acceptor with cofacial alignment at distances of 3.3-3.5 Å wherein efficient spatial charge transfer can occur. The quantum yields were enhanced by excluding molecular oxygen and thermally activated delayed fluorescence with lifetimes on the order of microseconds was observed. Although the molecules displayed low quantum yields in solution, higher quantum yields were observed in the solid state. Crystal structures revealed π-π intramolecular interactions between a donor and an acceptor, however, the dominant intermolecular interactions were C-H···π, which likely restrict the molecular dynamics to create aggregation-induced enhanced emission. Organic light emitting devices using XPT and XtBuCT as dopants displayed electroluminescence external quantum efficiencies as high as 10%.

Photocatalytic conversion of CO 2 to CH 4, a carbon-neutral fuel, represents an appealing approach to remedy the current energy and environmental crisis; however, it suffers from the large production of CO and H 2 by side reactions. The design of catalytic sites for CO 2 adsorption and activation holds the key to address this grand challenge. In this Article, we develop highly selective sites for photocatalytic conversion of CO 2 to CH 4 by isolating Cu atoms in Pd lattice. According to our synchrotron-radiation characterizations and theoretical simulations, the isolation of Cu atoms in Pd lattice can play dual roles in the enhancement of CO 2 -to-CH 4 conversion: (1) providing the paired Cu–Pd sites for the enhanced CO 2 adsorption and the suppressed H 2 evolution; and (2) elevating the d -band center of Cu sites for the improved CO 2 activation. As a result, the Pd 7 Cu 1 –TiO 2 photocatalyst achieves the high selectivity of 96% for CH 4 production with a rate of 19.6 μmol g cat –1 h –1 . We have developed a kind of novel fused-ring small molecular acceptor, whose planar conformation can be locked by intramolecular noncovalent interaction. The formation of planar supramolecular fused-ring structure by conformation locking can effectively broaden its absorption spectrum, enhance the electron mobility, and reduce the nonradiative energy loss. Polymer solar cells (PSCs) based on this acceptor afforded a power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 9.6%. In contrast, PSCs based on similar acceptor, which cannot form a flat conformation, only gave a PCE of 2.3%. Such design strategy, which can make the synthesis of small molecular acceptor much easier, will be promising in developing a new acceptor for high efficiency polymer solar cells.

However, the key issue is that the static solid electrolyte interphase cannot match the dynamic volume changes of the Li anode, resulting in side reactions, dendrite growth, and poor electrodeposition behavior, which prevent its practical applications. Here, we show that the "solid-liquid" hybrid behavior of a dynamically cross-linked polymer enables its use as an excellent adaptive interfacial layer for Li metal anodes. The dynamic polymer can reversibly switch between its "liquid" and "solid" properties in response to the rate of lithium growth to provide uniform surface coverage and dendrite suppression, respectively, thereby enabling the stable operation of lithium metal electrodes. We believe that this example of engineering an adaptive Li/electrolyte interface brings about a new and promising way to address the intrinsic problems of lithium metal anodes.

Converting greenhouse gas carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) to value-added chemicals is an appealing approach to tackle CO 2 emission challenges. The chemical transformation of CO 2 requires suitable catalysts that can lower the activation energy barrier, thus minimizing the energy penalty associated with the CO 2 reduction reaction. First-row transition metals are potential candidates as catalysts for electrochemical CO 2 reduction; however, their high oxygen affinity makes them easy to be oxidized, which could, in turn, strongly affect the catalytic properties of metal-based catalysts. Potassium has as rich an abundance as sodium in the earth, but the development of a K-ion battery is lagging behind because of the higher mass and larger ionic size of K + than that of Li + and Na +, which makes it difficult to identify a high-voltage and high-capacity intercalation cathode host. Here we propose a cyanoperovskite K x MnFe(CN) 6 (0 ≤ x ≤ 2) as a potassium cathode: high-spin Mn III /Mn II and low-spin Fe III /Fe II couples have similar energies and exhibit two close plateaus centered at 3.6 V; two active K + per formula unit enable a theoretical specific capacity of 156 mAh g –1; Mn and Fe are the two most-desired transition metals for electrodes because they are cheap and environmental friendly. As a powder prepared by an inexpensive precipitation method, the cathode delivers a specific capacity of 142 mAh g –1 . To investigate how different arrangements of imidazoles in metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) affect the overall proton conduction, we designed and prepared a MOF-based model system. It includes an Fe–MOF as the blank, an imidazole@Fe–MOF (Im@Fe–MOF) with physically adsorbed imidazole, and an imidazole–Fe–MOF (Im–Fe–MOF), which contains chemically coordinated imidazole molecules. The parent Fe–MOF, synthesized from the exchange of carboxylates in the preformed [Fe 3 (μ 3 –O)](carboxylate) 6 clusters and multitopic carboxylate ligands, serves as a control. The Im@Fe–MOF was prepared by encapsulating free imidazole molecules into the pores of the Fe–MOF, whereas the Im–Fe–MOF was obtained in situ, in which imidazole ligands coordinate to the metal nodes of the framework. Proton-conductivity analyses revealed that the proton conductivity of Im–Fe–MOF was approximately two orders of magnitude greater than those of Fe–MOF and Im@Fe–MOF at room temperature. Active centers in Cu/SSZ-13 selective catalytic reduction (SCR) catalysts have been recently identified as isolated Cu 2+ and [Cu II (OH)] + ions. A redox reaction mechanism has also been established, where Cu ions cycle between Cu I and Cu II oxidation states during SCR reaction. While the mechanism for the reduction half-cycle (Cu II → Cu I ) is reasonably well-understood, that for the oxidation half-cycle (Cu I → Cu II ) remains an unsettled debate. Herein we report detailed reaction kinetics on low-temperature standard NH 3 -SCR, supplemented by DFT calculations, as strong evidence that the low-temperature oxidation half-cycle occurs with the participation of two isolated Cu I ions via formation of a transient [Cu I (NH 3 ) 2 ] + –O 2 –[Cu I (NH 3 ) 2 ] + intermediate. The feasibility of this reaction mechanism is confirmed from DFT calculations, and the simulated energy barrier and rate constants are consistent with experimental findings. Significantly, the low-temperature standard SCR mechanism proposed here provides full consistency with low-temperature SCR kinetics.

We herein communicate that gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) are stable in the presence of thiolated DNA after a freeze-thaw cycle. The DNA is conjugated to AuNPs during freezing without additional reagents and the conjugation can be completed in a few minutes. More importantly, the DNA density is 20-30% higher than that prepared by the typical salt-aging method. By lowering temperature, DNA hybridization is also promoted, allowing the construction of better nanoflares with doubled probe density and signaling sensitivity. This freezing method works for AuNPs from 5 to 100 nm and all tested DNA sequences. Compared to the more common Ruddlesden–Popper (RP) 2D perovskites, the ACI perovskites have a different stacking motif and adopt a higher crystal symmetry. The higher symmetry of the ACI perovskites is expressed in their physical properties, which show a characteristic decrease of the bandgap with respect to their RP perovskite counterparts with the same perovskite layer thickness ( n ). The compounds show a monotonic decrease in the optical gap as n increases: E g = 2.27 eV for n = 1 to E g = 1.99 eV for n = 2 and E g = 1.73 eV for n = 3, which show slightly narrower gaps compared to the corresponding RP perovskites. First-principles theoretical electronic structure calculations confirm the experimental optical…

A highly active and stable non-Pt electrocatalyst for hydrogen production has been pursued for a long time as an inexpensive alternative to Pt-based catalysts. Herein, we report a simple and effective approach to prepare high-performance iron phosphide (FeP) nanoparticle electrocatalysts using iron oxide nanoparticles as a precursor. A single-step heating procedure of polydopamine-coated iron oxide nanoparticles leads to both carbonization of polydopamine coating to the carbon shell and phosphidation of iron oxide to FeP, simultaneously. Carbon-shell-coated FeP nanoparticles show a low overpotential of 71 mV at 10 mA cm –2, which is comparable to that of a commercial Pt catalyst, and remarkable long-term durability under acidic conditions for up to 10 000 cycles with negligible activity loss. The effect of carbon shell protection was investigated both theoretically and experimentally. A density functional theory reveals that deterioration of catalytic activity of FeP is caused by surface oxidation. Extended X-ray absorption fine structure analysis combined with electrochemical test…

The design and synthesis of three-dimensional covalent organic frameworks (3D COFs) bearing photoelectric units have been considered as a big challenge. Herein, for the first time, we reported the targeted synthesis of two 3D porphyrin-based COFs (3D-Por-COF and 3D-CuPor-COF), starting from tetrahedral (3D- T d ) and square (2D- C 4 ) building blocks connected through [4 + 4] imine condensation reactions. On the basis of structural characterizations, 3D-Por-COF and 3D-CuPor-COF are microporous materials with high surface areas, and are proposed to adopt a 2-fold interpenetrated pts topology with Pmc 2 1 space group. Interestingly, both 3D COFs are photosensitive and can be used as heterogeneous catalyst for generating singlet oxygen under photoirradiation. However, 3D-Por-COF shows enhanced photocatalytic activity compared with 3D-CuPor-COF, indicating the properties of 3D porphyrin-based COFs can be tuned by metalation of porphyrin rings. The results reported here will greatly inspire us to design and synthesize 3D COFs bearing other metalloporphyrins for interesting applications…

CRISPR/Cas9 is a combined protein (Cas9) and an engineered single guide RNA (sgRNA) genome editing platform that offers revolutionary solutions to genetic diseases. It has, however, a double delivery problem owning to the large protein size and the highly charged RNA component. In this work, we report the first example of CRISPR/Cas9 encapsulated by nanoscale zeolitic imidazole frameworks (ZIFs) with a loading efficiency of 17% and enhanced endosomal escape promoted by the protonated imidazole moieties. The gene editing potential of CRISPR/Cas9 encapsulated by ZIF-8 (CC-ZIFs) is further verified by knocking down the gene expression of green fluorescent protein by 37% over 4 days. The nanoscale CC-ZIFs are biocompatible and easily scaled-up offering excellent loading capacity and controlled codelivery of intact Cas9 protein and sgRNA.

Significant increases in the energy density of batteries must be achieved by exploring new materials and cell configurations. Lithium metal and lithiated silicon are two promising high-capacity anode materials. Unfortunately, both of these anodes require a reliable passivating layer to survive the serious environmental corrosion during handling and cycling. Here we developed a surface fluorination process to form a homogeneous and dense LiF coating on reactive anode materials, with in situ generated fluorine gas, by using a fluoropolymer, CYTOP, as the precursor. The process is effectively a “reaction in the beaker”, avoiding direct handling of highly toxic fluorine gas. For lithium metal, this LiF coating serves as a chemically stable and mechanically strong interphase, which minimizes the corrosion reaction with carbonate electrolytes and suppresses dendrite formation, enabling dendrite-free and stable cycling over 300 cycles with current densities up to 5 mA/cm 2 . Lithiated silicon can serve as either a pre-lithiation additive for existing lithium-ion batteries or a replacement…

Large-scale electric energy storage is fundamental to the use of renewable energy. Recently, research and development efforts on room-temperature sodium-ion batteries (NIBs) have been revitalized, as NIBs are considered promising, low-cost alternatives to the current Li-ion battery technology for large-scale applications. Herein, we introduce a novel layered oxide cathode material, Na 0.78 Ni 0.23 Mn 0.69 O 2 . This new compound provides a high reversible capacity of 138 mAh g –1 and an average potential of 3.25 V vs Na + /Na with a single smooth voltage profile. Its remarkable rate and cycling performances are attributed to the elimination of the P2–O2 phase transition upon cycling to 4.5 V. The first charge process yields an abnormally excess capacity, which has yet to be observed in other P2 layered oxides. Metal K-edge XANES results show that the major charge compensation at the metal site during Na-ion deintercalation is achieved via the oxidation of nickel (Ni 2+ ) ions, whereas, to a large extent, manganese (Mn) ions remain in their Mn 4+ state. Interestingly, electron energy…
