The construction of highly active and stable non-noble-metal electrocatalysts for hydrogen and oxygen evolution reactions is a major challenge for overall water splitting. Herein, we report a novel hybrid nanostructure with CoP nanoparticles (NPs) embedded in a N-doped carbon nanotube hollow polyhedron (NCNHP) through a pyrolysis–oxidation–phosphidation strategy derived from core–shell ZIF-8@ZIF-67. Benefiting from the synergistic effects between highly active CoP NPs and NCNHP, the CoP/NCNHP hybrid exhibited outstanding bifunctional electrocatalytic performances. When the CoP/NCNHP was employed as both the anode and cathode for overall water splitting, a potential as low as 1.64 V was needed to achieve the current density of 10 mA·cm –2, and it still exhibited superior activity after continuously working for 36 h with nearly negligible decay in potential. Density functional theory calculations indicated that the electron transfer from NCNHP to CoP could increase the electronic states of the Co d -orbital around the Fermi level, which could increase the binding strength with H and…

Water splitting is the essential chemical reaction to enable the storage of intermittent energies such as solar and wind in the form of hydrogen fuel. The oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is often considered as the bottleneck in water splitting. Though metal oxides had been reported as OER electrocatalysts more than half a century ago, the recent interest in renewable energy storage has spurred a renaissance of the studies of transition metal oxides as Earth-abundant and nonprecious OER catalysts. This Perspective presents major progress in several key areas of the field such as theoretical understanding, activity trend, in situ and operando characterization, active site determination, and novel materials. A personal overview of the past achievements and future challenges is also provided.

. The next generation of halide perovskites, however, is characterized by reduced dimensionality perovskites, emphasizing the two-dimensional (2D) perovskite derivatives which expand the field into a more diverse subgroup of semiconducting hybrids that possesses even higher tunability and excellent photophysical properties. In this Perspective, we begin with a historical flashback to early reports before the "perovskite fever", and we follow this original work to its fruition in the present day, where 2D halide perovskites are in the spotlight of current research, offering characteristics desirable in high-performance optoelectronics. We approach the evolution of 2D halide perovskites from a structural perspective, providing a way to classify the diverse structure types of the materials, which largely dictate the unusual physical properties observed. We sort the 2D hybrid halide perovskites on the basis of two key components: the inorganic layers and their modification, and the organic cation diversity. As these two heterogeneous components blend, either by synthetic manipulation…

Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) represent a new field of rapidly growing chemical research that takes direct inspiration from diverse covalent bonds existing between atoms. The success of linking atoms in two and three dimensions to construct extended framework structures moved the chemistry of COFs beyond the structures to methodologies, highlighting the possibility of prospective applications. Although structure to property relation in COFs has led to fascinating properties, chemical stability, processability and scalability were some of the important challenges that needed to be overcome for their successful implementation. In this Perspective, we take a closer look at the growth of COFs from mere supramolecular structures to potential industrializable materials.

The Fenton-like process presents one of the most promising strategies to generate reactive oxygen-containing radicals to deal with the ever-growing environmental pollution. However, developing improved catalysts with adequate activity and stability is still a long-term goal for practical application. Herein, we demonstrate single cobalt atoms anchored on porous N-doped graphene with dual reaction sites as highly reactive and stable Fenton-like catalysts for efficient catalytic oxidation of recalcitrant organics via activation of peroxymonosulfate (PMS). Our experiments and density functional theory (DFT) calculations show that the CoN 4 site with a single Co atom serves as the active site with optimal binding energy for PMS activation, while the adjacent pyrrolic N site adsorbs organic molecules. The dual reaction sites greatly reduce the migration distance of the active singlet oxygen produced from PMS activation and thus improve the Fenton-like catalytic performance.

Our catalyst exhibits high selectivity for CO 2 RR with CO Faradaic efficiency (FE CO ) above 90% over a wide potential range from −0.57 to −0.88 V (the FE CO exceeded 99% at −0.73 and −0.79 V). Nanoformulations that can respond to the specific tumor microenvironment (TME), such as a weakly acidic pH, low oxygen, and high glutathione (GSH), show promise for killing cancer cells with minimal invasiveness and high specificity. In this study, we demonstrate self-assembled copper–amino acid mercaptide nanoparticles (Cu-Cys NPs) for in situ glutathione-activated and H 2 O 2 -reinforced chemodynamic therapy for drug-resistant breast cancer. After endocytosis into tumor cells, the Cu-Cys NPs could first react with local GSH, induce GSH depletion, and reduce Cu 2+ to Cu + . Subsequently, the generated Cu + would react with local H 2 O 2 to generate toxic hydroxyl radicals (·OH) via a Fenton-like reaction, which has a fast reaction rate in the weakly acidic TME, that are responsible for tumor-cell apoptosis. Due to the high GSH and H 2 O 2 concentration in tumor cells, which sequentially triggers the redox reactions, Cu-Cys NPs exhibited relatively high cytotoxicity to cancer cells, whereas normal cells were left alive. The in vivo results also proved that Cu-Cys NPs efficiently…

Abstract A fundamental understanding of the origin of oxygen evolution reaction (OER) activity of transition-metal-based electrocatalysts, especially for single precious metal atoms supported on layered double hydroxides (LDHs), is highly required for the design of efficient electrocatalysts toward further energy conversion technologies. Here, we aim toward single-atom Au supported on NiFe LDH (sAu/NiFe LDH) to clarify the activity origin of LDHs system and a 6-fold OER activity enhancement by 0.4 wt % sAu decoration. Combining with theoretical calculations, the active behavior of NiFe LDH results from the in situ generated NiFe oxyhydroxide from LDH during the OER process. With the presence of sAu, sAu/NiFe LDH possesses an overpotential of 0.21 V in contrast to the calculated result (0.18 V). We ascribe the excellent OER activity of sAu/NiFe LDH to the charge redistribution of active Fe as well as its surrounding atoms causing by the neighboring sAu on NiFe oxyhydroxide stabilized by interfacial CO32– and H2O interfacing with LDH.

Photocatalysis may provide an intriguing approach to nitrogen fixation, which relies on the transfer of photoexcited electrons to the ultrastable N≡N bond. Upon N 2 chemisorption at active sites (e.g., surface defects), the N 2 molecules have yet to receive energetic electrons toward efficient activation and dissociation, often forming a bottleneck. Herein, we report that the bottleneck can be well tackled by refining the defect states in photocatalysts via doping. As a proof of concept, W 18 O 49 ultrathin nanowires are employed as a model material for subtle Mo doping, in which the coordinatively unsaturated (CUS) metal atoms with oxygen defects serve as the sites for N 2 chemisorption and electron transfer. The doped low-valence Mo species play multiple roles in facilitating N 2 activation and dissociation by refining the defect states of W 18 O 49: (1) polarizing the chemisorbed N 2 molecules and facilitating the electron transfer from CUS sites to N 2 adsorbates, which enables the N≡N bond to be more feasible for dissociation through proton coupling; (2) elevating defect-band…

Although these materials are under intense investigation, derivative materials with lower dimensionality are emerging, offering higher tunability of physical properties and new capabilities. Here, we present two new series of hybrid two-dimensional (2D) perovskites that adopt the Dion–Jacobson (DJ) structure type, which are the first complete homologous series reported in halide perovskite chemistry. These materials have layered structures where the stacking of inorganic layers is unique as they lay exactly on top of another. With a slightly different position of the functional group in the templating cation 3AMP and 4AMP, the as-formed DJ perovskites show different optical properties, with the 3AMP series having smaller band gaps than the 4AMP series. Solar nitrogen (N 2 ) fixation is the most attractive way for the sustainable production of ammonia (NH 3 ), but the development of a highly active, long-term stable and low-cost catalyst remains a great challenge. Current research efforts for N 2 reduction mainly focus on the metal-based catalysts using the electrochemical approach, while metal-free or solar-driven catalysts have been rarely explored. Herein, on the basis of a concept of electron “acceptance-donation”, a metal-free photocatalyst, namely, boron (B) atom, decorated on the optically active graphitic-carbon nitride (B/g-C 3 N 4 ), for the reduction of N 2 is proposed by using extensive first-principles calculations. Our results reveal that gas phase N 2 can be efficiently reduced into NH 3 on B/g-C 3 N 4 through the enzymatic mechanism with a record low onset potential (0.20 V). Moreover, the B-decorated g-C 3 N 4 can significantly enhance the visible light absorption, rendering them ideal for solar-driven reduction of N 2 . A facile method to produce zeolitic imidazolate frameworks (ZIF-8, ZIF-67, and solid-solution ZIFs (mixed Co and Zn)) is reported. ZIF crystals are produced via a reaction-diffusion framework (RDF) by diffusing an outer solution at a relatively high concentration of the 2-methyl imidazole linker (HmIm) into an agar gel matrix containing the metal ions (zinc(II) and/or cobalt(II)) at room temperature. Accordingly, a propagating supersaturation wave, initiated at the interface between the outer solution and the gel matrix, leads to a precipitation front with a gradient of crystal sizes ranging between 100 nm and 55 μm along the reaction tube. While the precipitation fronts of ZIF-8 and ZIF-67 travel the same distance for the same initial conditions, ZIF-8 crystals therein are consistently smaller than the ZIF-67 crystals due to the disparity of their rate of nucleation and growth. The effects of the temperature, the concentration of the reagents, and the thickness of the gel matrix on the growth of the ZIF crystals are investigated. We also show that by using RDF we can envisage the…

Organic–inorganic halide perovskite is believed to be a potential candidate for high efficiency solar cells because power conversion efficiency (PCE) was certified to be more than 22%. Nevertheless, mismatch of PCE due to current density ( J )–voltage ( V ) hysteresis in perovskite solar cells is an obstacle to overcome. There has been much lively debate on the origin of J – V hysteresis; however, effective methodology to solve the hysteric problem has not been developed. Here we report a universal approach for hysteresis-free perovskite solar cells via defect engineering. A severe hysteresis observed from the normal mesoscopic structure employing TiO 2 and spiro-MeOTAD is almost removed or does not exist upon doping the pure perovskites, CH 3 NH 3 PbI 3 and HC(NH 2 ) 2 PbI 3, and the mixed cation/anion perovskites, FA 0.85 MA 0.15 PbI 2.55 Br 0.45 and FA 0.85 MA 0.1 Cs 0.05 PbI 2.7 Br 0.3, with potassium iodide. Markov state models (MSMs) are a powerful framework for analyzing dynamical systems, such as molecular dynamics (MD) simulations, that have gained widespread use over the past several decades. This perspective offers an overview of the MSM field to date, presented for a general audience as a timeline of key developments in the field. We sequentially address early studies that motivated the method, canonical papers that established the use of MSMs for MD analysis, and subsequent advances in software and analysis protocols. The derivation of a variational principle for MSMs in 2013 signified a turning point from expertise-driving MSM building to a systematic, objective protocol. The variational approach, combined with best practices for model selection and open-source software, enabled a wide range of MSM analysis for applications such as protein folding and allostery, ligand binding, and protein-protein association. To conclude, the current frontiers of methods development are highlighted, as well as exciting applications in experimental design and drug discovery.

Excitonic effects mediated by Coulomb interactions between photogenerated electrons and holes play crucial roles in photoinduced processes of semiconductors. In terms of photocatalysis, however, efforts have seldom been devoted to the relevant aspects. For the catalysts with giant excitonic effects, the coexisting, competitive exciton generation serves as a key obstacle to the yield of free charge carriers, and hence, transformation of excitons into free carriers would be beneficial for optimizing the charge-carrier-involved photocatalytic processes. Herein, by taking bismuth oxybromide (BiOBr) as a prototypical model system, we demonstrate that excitons can be effectively dissociated into charge carriers with the incorporation of oxygen vacancy, leading to excellent performances in charge-carrier-involved photocatalytic reactions such as superoxide generation and selective organic syntheses under visible-light illumination. This work not only establishes an in-depth understanding of defective structures in photocatalysts but also paves the way for excitonic regulation via defect…

EXAFS shows the co-deposited alloy film to be homogeneously mixed. The alloy film containing 6% Ag exhibits the best CO 2 electroreduction performance, with the Faradaic efficiency for C 2 H 4 and C 2 H 5 OH production reaching nearly 60 and 25%, respectively, at a cathode potential of just −0.7 V vs RHE and a total current density of ∼ – 300 mA/cm 2 . Such high levels of selectivity at high activity and low applied potential are the highest reported to date. In situ Raman and electroanalysis studies suggest the origin of the high selectivity toward C 2 products to be a combined effect of the enhanced stabilization of the Cu 2 O overlayer and the optimal availability of the CO intermediate due to the Ag incorporated in the alloy.

During the nitrogen reduction, the N 2 H y species was detected with bands at 1453 (H–N–H bending), 1298 (−NH 2 wagging), and 1109 cm –1 (N–N stretching) at potentials below 0 V against reversible hydrogen electrode. This result indicates that the nitrogen reduction reaction on Au surfaces follows an associative mechanism, and the N≡N bond in N 2 tends to break simultaneously with the hydrogen addition. By comparison, no absorption band associated with N was observed on Pt surfaces under the same reaction condition. This result is consistent with the low efficiency of nitrogen reduction on Pt due to the much faster kinetics of hydrogen evolution reaction.

All-inorganic perovskite nanocrystals (NCs) have emerged as a new generation of low-cost semiconducting luminescent system for optoelectronic applications. The room-temperature photoluminescence quantum yields (PLQYs) of these NCs in the green and red spectral range approach unity. However, their PLQYs in the violet are much lower, and an insightful understanding of such poor performance remains missing. We report a general strategy for the synthesis of all-inorganic violet-emitting perovskite NCs with near-unity PLQYs through engineering local order of the lattice by nickel ion doping. A broad range of experimental characterizations, including steady-state and time-resolved luminescence spectroscopy, X-ray absorption spectra, and magic angle spinning nuclear magnetic resonance spectra, reveal that the low PLQY in undoped NCs is associated with short-range disorder of the lattice induced by intrinsic defects such as halide vacancies and that Ni doping can substantially eliminate these defects and result in increased short-range order of the lattice. Covalent organic framework (COF) represents an emerging class of porous materials that have exhibited great potential in various applications, particularly in catalysis. In this work, we report a newly designed 2D COF with incorporated Re complex, which exhibits intrinsic light absorption and charge separation (CS) properties. We show that this hybrid catalyst can efficiently reduce CO 2 to form CO under visible light illumination with high electivity (98%) and better activity than its homogeneous Re counterpart. More importantly, using advanced transient optical and X-ray absorption spectroscopy and in situ diffuse reflectance spectroscopy, we unraveled three key intermediates that are responsible for CS, the induction period, and rate limiting step in catalysis. This work not only demonstrates the potential of COFs as next generation photocatalysts for solar fuel conversion but also provide unprecedented insight into the mechanistic origins for light-driven CO 2 reduction.

To simultaneously achieve low photon energy loss ( E loss ) and broad spectral response, the molecular design of the wide band gap (WBG) donor polymer with a deep HOMO level is of critical importance in fullerene-free polymer solar cells (PSCs). Herein, we developed a new benzodithiophene unit, i.e., DTBDT-EF, and conducted systematic investigations on a WBG DTBDT-EF-based donor polymer, namely, PDTB-EF-T. Due to the synergistic electron-withdrawing effect of the fluorine atom and ester group, PDTB-EF-T exhibits a higher oxidation potential, i.e., a deeper HOMO level (ca. −5.5 eV) than most well-known donor polymers. Hence, a high open-circuit voltage of 0.90 V was obtained when paired with a fluorinated small molecule acceptor (IT-4F), corresponding to a low E loss of 0.62 eV. Furthermore, side-chain engineering demonstrated that subtle side-chain modulation of the ester greatly influences the aggregation effects and molecular packing of polymer PDTB-EF-T. With the benefits of the stronger interchain π–π interaction, the improved ordering structure, and thus the highest hole…

The all-inorganic α-CsPbI 3 perovskite with the most suitable band gap faces serious challenges of low phase stability and high moisture sensitivity. We discover that a simple phenyltrimethylammonium bromide (PTABr) post-treatment could achieve a bifunctional stabilization including both gradient Br doping (or alloying) and surface passivation. The PTABr treatment on CsPbI 3 only induces less than 5 nm blue shift in UV–vis absorbance but significantly stabilize the perovskite phase with much better stability. Finally, the highly stable PTABr treated CsPbI 3 based perovskite solar cells exhibit a reproducible photovoltaic performance with a champion efficiency up to 17.06% and stable output of 16.3%. Therefore, this one-step bifunctional stabilization of perovskite through gradient halide doping and surface organic cation passivation presents a novel and promising strategy to design stable and high performance all-inorganic lead halide.

Herein, we develop a near-infrared (NIR) light-triggered molecular superoxide radical (O 2 –• ) generator ( ENBS-B ) to surmount this intractable issue, also reveal its detailed O 2 –• action mechanism underlying the antihypoxia effects, and confirm its application for in vivo targeted hypoxic solid tumor ablation. Photomediated radical generation mechanism study shows that, even under severe hypoxic environment (2% O 2 ), ENBS-B can generate considerable O 2 –• through type I photoreactions, and partial O 2 –• is transformed to high toxic OH · through SOD-mediated cascade reactions. Immunogenic photodynamic therapy (PDT) can prime cancer immunotherapy to increase the response rates, but its efficacy is severely limited by tumor hypoxia. Here we report a nanoscale metal-organic framework, Fe-TBP, as a novel nanophotosensitizer to overcome tumor hypoxia and sensitize effective PDT, priming non-inflamed tumors for cancer immunotherapy. Fe-TBP was built from iron-oxo clusters and porphyrin ligands and sensitized PDT under both normoxic and hypoxic conditions. Fe-TBP mediated PDT significantly improved the efficacy of anti-programmed death-ligand 1 (α-PD-L1) treatment and elicited abscopal effects in a mouse model of colorectal cancer, resulting in >90% regression of tumors. In this research, a series of amorphous organic small molecular compounds were developed with efficient RTP emission through conveniently modifying phosphor moieties to β-cyclodextrin (β-CD). The hydrogen bonding between the cyclodextrin derivatives immobilizes the phosphors to suppress the nonradiative relaxation and shields phosphors from quenchers, which enables such molecules to emit efficient RTP emission with decent quantum yields. Abstract We propose here a new colloidal approach for the synthesis of both all-inorganic and hybrid organic–inorganic lead halide perovskite nanocrystals (NCs). The main limitation of the protocols that are currently in use, such as the hot injection and the ligand-assisted reprecipitation routes, is that they employ PbX2 (X = Cl, Br, or I) salts as both lead and halide precursors. This imposes restrictions on being able to precisely tune the amount of reaction species and, consequently, on being able to regulate the composition of the final NCs. In order to overcome this issue, we show here that benzoyl halides can be efficiently used as halide sources to be injected in a solution of metal cations (mainly in the form of metal carboxylates) for the synthesis of APbX3 NCs (in which A = Cs+, CH3NH3+, or CH(NH2)2+). In this way, it is possible to independently tune the amount of both cations and halide precursors in the synthesis. The APbX3 NCs that were prepared with our protocol show excellent optical properties, such as high photoluminescence quantum yields, low amplified…

The former contributes to the formation of the soft domain of the SPMs, and the latter furnishes the SPMs with desirable mechanical properties, thereby producing soft, stretchable, yet tough elastomers. Furthermore, a gold, thin film electrode deposited on this SPM substrate retains its conductivity and combines high stretchability (∼400%), fracture/notch insensitivity, self-healing, and good interfacial adhesion with the gold film. We introduce a general surface passivation mechanism for cesium lead halide perovskite materials (CsPbX 3, X = Cl, Br, I) that is supported by a combined experimental and theoretical study of the nanocrystal surface chemistry. A variety of spectroscopic methods are employed together with ab initio calculations to identify surface halide vacancies as the predominant source of charge trapping. The number of surface traps per nanocrystal is quantified by 1 H NMR spectroscopy, and that number is consistent with a simple trapping model in which surface halide vacancies create deleterious under-coordinated lead atoms. These halide vacancies exhibit trapping behavior that differs among CsPbCl 3, CsPbBr 3, and CsPbI 3 . Ab initio calculations suggest that introduction of anionic X-type ligands can produce trap-free band gaps by altering the energetics of lead-based defect levels. General rules for selecting effective passivating ligand pairs are introduced by considering established principles of coordination chemistry. Room-temperature phosphorescence (RTP) with long afterglow from pure organic materials has attracted great attention for its potential applications in biological imaging, digital encryption, optoelectronic devices, and so on. Organic materials have been long considered to be nonphosphorescent owing to their weak molecular spin–orbit coupling and high sensitivity to temperature. However, recently, some purely organic compounds have demonstrated highly efficient RTP with long afterglow upon aggregation, while others fail. Namely, it remains a challenge to expound on the underlying mechanisms. In this study, we present the molecular descriptors to characterize the phosphorescence efficiency and lifetime. For a prototypical RTP system consisting of a carbonyl group and π-conjugated segments, the excited states can be regarded as an admixture of n → π* (with portion α) and π → π* (portion β). Starting from the phosphorescent process and El-Sayed rule, we deduced that (i) the intersystem crossing (ISC) rate of S 1 → T n is mostly governed by the modification of the product of α and β and…

Platinum (Pt) is the state-of-the-art catalyst for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR), but its high cost and scarcity limit its large-scale use. However, if the usage of Pt reduces to a sufficiently low level, this critical barrier may be overcome. Atomically dispersed metal catalysts with high activity and high atom efficiency have the possibility to achieve this goal. Herein, we report a locally distributed atomic Pt-Co nitrogen–carbon-based catalyst (denoted as A-CoPt-NC) with high activity and robust durability for ORR (267 times higher than commercial Pt/C in mass activity). The A-CoPt-NC shows a high selectivity for the 4e – pathway in ORR, differing from the reported 2e – pathway characteristic of atomic Pt catalysts. Density functional theory calculations suggest that this high activity originates from the synergistic effect of atomic Pt-Co located on a defected C/N graphene surface. The mechanism is thought to arise from asymmetry in the electron distribution around the Pt/Co metal centers, as well as the metal atoms’ coordination with local environments on the carbon surface.…

Herein, we designed an all-inorganic perovskite solar cell with novel structure (FTO/NiOx/CsPbI2Br/ZnO@C60/Ag), in which ZnO@C60 bilayer was utilized as the electron-transporting layers that demonstrated high carrier extraction efficiency and low leakage loss. Consequently, the as-fabricated all-inorganic CsPbI2Br perovskite solar cell yielded a power conversion efficiency (PCE) as high as 13.3% with a Voc of 1.14 V, Jsc of 15.2 mA·cm–2, and FF of 0.77. The corresponding stabilized power output (SPO) of the device was demonstrated to be ∼12% and remarkably stable within 1000 s. Importantly, the obtained all-inorganic PSCs without encapsulation exhibited only 20% PCE loss with thermal treatment at 85 °C for 360 h, which largely outperformed the organic-species-containing PSCs. Eu 2+ ions are located at K2 (M2) and K3 (M3) sites of KBCP, with the latter occupation relatively more stable than the former, corresponding to emissions at 438 and 465 nm, respectively. KBCP:Eu 2+ phosphor exhibits highly thermal stable luminescence even up to 200 °C, which is interpreted as due to a balance between thermal ionization and recombination of Eu 2+ 5d excited-state centers with the involvement of electrons trapped at crystal defect levels. Inorganic perovskite CsPbBr 3 nanocrystals (NCs) are emerging, highly attractive light emitters with high color purity and good thermal stability for light-emitting diodes (LEDs). Their high photo/electroluminescence efficiencies are very important for fabricating efficient LEDs. Here, we propose a novel strategy to enhance the photo/electroluminescence efficiency of CsPbBr 3 NCs through doping of heterovalent Ce 3+ ions via a facile hot-injection method. The Ce 3+ cation was chosen as the dopant for CsPbBr 3 NCs by virtue of its similar ion radius and formation of higher energy level of conduction band with bromine in comparison with the Pb 2+ cation to maintain the integrity of perovskite structure without introducing additional trap states. It was found that by increasing the doping amount of Ce 3+ in CsPbBr 3 NCs to 2.88% (atomic percentage of Ce compared to Pb) the photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) of CsPbBr 3 NCs reached up to 89%, a factor of 2 increase in comparison with the native, undoped ones. Lead-free double-perovskite nanocrystals (NCs), that is, Cs 2 AgIn x Bi 1– x Cl 6 ( x = 0, 0.25, 0.5, 0.75, and 0.9), that can be tuned from indirect band gap ( x = 0, 0.25, and 0.5) to direct band gap ( x = 0.75 and 0.9) are designed. Direct band gap NCs exhibit 3 times greater absorption cross section, lower sub-band gap trap states, and >5 times photoluminescence quantum efficiency (PLQE) compared to those observed for indirect band gap NCs (Cs 2 AgBiCl 6 ). A PLQE of 36.6% for direct band gap NCs is comparable to those observed for lead perovskite NCs in the violet region. Besides the band edge violet emission, the direct band gap NCs exhibit bright orange (570 nm) emission. Density functional theory calculations suggesting forbidden transition is responsible for the orange emission, which is supported by time-resolved PL and PL excitation spectra. The successful design of lead-free direct band gap perovskite NCs with superior optical properties opens the door for high-performance lead-free perovskite optoelectronic devices.

Owing to their vital role in creating and controlling polarized light, birefringent materials are used extensively in various advanced optical systems which in turn impact a large, rapidly increasing range of applications in science and technology. Currently, the fairly small birefringence of MgF 2 and the low transmittance of α-BaB 2 O 4 (α-BBO) hinder their efficient application for wavelength below 200 nm. For example, deep-ultraviolet (DUV) birefringent materials for light polarization are urgently needed for DUV lithography. Here we demonstrate based on computational and experimental results that parallel chains of corner-connected planar sp 2 -hybridized BO 3 groups found in Ca(BO 2 ) 2 effectively produce large birefringence. Ca(BO 2 ) 2 achieves three vital “best” properties including the shortest UV cutoff edge, the largest birefringence, and the highest laser-induced damage threshold (LIDT) compared to all the reported borate birefringent materials. On the basis of a Ca(BO 2 ) 2 single crystal, a DUV Glan polarizer has been realized and is more efficient than one…

Ligand-to-metal charge transfer (LMCT) can bring about the separation of photogenerated charges. Here we calculate the electronic structures of metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) having the UiO-66 architecture and M 6 O 4 (OH) 4 inorganometallic nodes with M = Zr, Hf, Th, Ti, U, or Ce. We find that LMCT is favorable only in the Ce case, where it is promoted by the low-lying empty 4f orbitals of Ce 4+ . We therefore propose that incorporating Ce 4+ into the node is an effective way to facilitate LMCT in a MOF. In addition, we show that by functionalizing the linker, it should be possible to engineer the electronic structure of the Ce-MOF for a desired reaction (e.g., water splitting) while preserving favorable LMCT. We also find that linker functionalization with electron donating or withdrawing groups allows tuning of the LMCT energy, and increasing the number of functional groups on each linker enhances the tuning; these findings are encouraging for applying Ce-MOFs for visible-response photocatalytic water splitting.

Mixed-transition-metal (MTM)-based electrocatalysts, owing to the desirable electrical conductivity, synergistic effect of bimetal atoms, and structural stability, have recently emerged as new-generation hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) electrocatalysts. However, the correlation between anion species and their intrinsic electrocatalytic properties in MTM-based electrocatalysts is still not well understood. Here we present a novel approach to tuning the anion-dependent electrocatalytic characteristics in MTM-based catalyst for HER, using holey Ni/Co-based phosphides/selenides/oxides (Ni–Co–A, A = P, Se, O) as the model materials. The electrochemical results, combined with the electrical conductivity measurement and DFT calculation, reveal that P substitution could modulate the electron configuration, lower the hydrogen adsorption energy, and facilitate the desorption of hydrogen on the active sites in Ni–Co–A holey nanostructures, resulting in superior…

Here we report bottom-up synthesis of the first example of 3D chiral COFs by imine condensation of an enantiopure 2-fold symmetric TADDOL-derived tetraaldehyde with a tetrahedral tetra(4-anilyl)methane. After postsynthetic oxidation of imine linkages, the framework is transformed into an amide-linked COF with retention of crystallinity and permanent porosity as well as enhanced chemical stability. The resultant isostructural COFs feature a 4-fold interpenetrated diamondoid open framework with tubular channels decorated with chiral dihydroxy auxiliaries. Both COFs can be used as chiral stationary phases for high performance liquid chromatography to enantioseparate racemic alcohols, and the oxidized COF shows superior separation performance compared to the pristine framework.

The unique structure of the catalyst (i.e., atomically dispersion of Pd atoms on graphene through Pd-C bond anchoring) blocks the formation of unselective subsurface hydrogen species and ensures the facile desorption of ethylene against the overhydrogenation to undesired ethane, which is the key for the outstanding selectivity of the catalyst.

The coordinated water molecules in the hydronium ions will obviously reduce the positive charge density of H + and hamper the ability of H + to receive electrons from the cathode, leading to large overpotential of HER on nonprecious metal catalysts. Here we realize Pt-like hydrogen evolution electrocatalysis on polyaniline (PANI) nanodots (NDs)-decorated CoP hybrid nanowires (HNWs) supported on carbon fibers (CFs) (PANI/CoP HNWs-CFs) as PANI can effectively capture H + from hydronium ions to form protonated amine groups that have higher positive charge density than those of hydronium ions and can be electro-reduced easily. Carrying out the two reactions separately is challenging, since the catalytic intermediates are linked by scaling relations. Optimizing the efficiency of OER over CER in acidic media has proven especially difficult. Triangular 2,3,6,7,10,11-hexahydroxytriphenylene (HHTP) and linear tetrafluorophthalonitrile (TFPN) or 2,3,5,6-tetrafluoro-4-pyridinecarbonitrile (TFPC) were linked by 1,4-dioxin linkages to form crystalline 2D covalent organic frameworks, termed COF-316 and -318. Unlike the condensation reactions commonly used to crystallize the great majority of COFs, the reactions used in this report are based on nucleophilic aromatic substitution reactions (S N Ar) that are considered irreversible. Our studies show that the reactivity of TFPN and TFPC with HHTP is enhanced by the nitrile substituents leading to facile reactions of planar building units to yield the present 1,4-dioxin linked COFs. Because these reactions are irreversible, the resultant frameworks have high chemical stability in both acid and base. This has led to postsynthetic modifications of COF-316 by reactions necessitating extreme conditions to covalently install functionalities not otherwise accessible. We also report the permanent porosity of these COFs.

Efficient delivery and endo-lysosomal release of active proteins in living cells remain a challenge in protein-based theranostics. We report a novel protein delivery platform using protein-encapsulating biomineralized metal-organic framework (MOF) nanoparticles (NPs). This platform introduces an adapted biomimetic mineralization method for facile synthesis of MOF NPs with high protein encapsulation efficiency and a new polymer coating strategy to confer the NPs with long-term stability. In vitro results show that protein-encapsulating MOF NPs have the advantages of preserving protein activity for months and protecting proteins from enzyme-mediated degradation. Live cell studies reveal that MOF NPs enable rapid cellular uptake, efficient release and escape of proteins from endo-lysosomes, and preservation of protein activity in living cells. Moreover, the developed platform is demonstrated to enable easy encapsulation of multiple proteins in single MOF NPs for efficient protein co-delivery. To our knowledge, it is the first time that protein-encapsulating MOF NPs have been developed…

Developing highly efficient oxygen evolution reaction (OER) catalysts and understanding their activity are pivotal for electrochemical conversion technologies. Here, we report NiFe Prussian blue analogue (PBA) as a promising electrocatalyst for OER in alkaline conditions. This material has an impressively low overpotential of 258 mV that reaches a current density of 10 mA cm –2 . Post-mortem characterization showed that the as-prepared catalyst is entirely transformed into amorphous nickel hydroxide after the electrochemical treatment, and Ni(OH) 2 acts as the active species. Operando X-ray spectroscopic studies further found that this in situ generated Ni(OH) 2 displays an unique feature that allows deprotonation under applied potential creating NiOOH 2– x that contains Ni 4+ ions. The deprotonation reaction is reversible and potential-dependent, i.e., the amount of Ni 4+ increases with increasing applied potential. Theoretical calculations were used to show that the role of Ni 4+ is to trigger oxidized oxygen ions as electrophilic centers with the subsequent activation of anion…

Chemistry at the cathode/electrolyte interface plays an important role for lithium–sulfur batteries in which stable cycling of the sulfur cathode requires confinement of the lithium polysulfide intermediates and their fast electrochemical conversion on the electrode surface. While many materials have been found to be effective for confining polysulfides, the underlying chemical interactions remain poorly understood. We report a new and general lithium polysulfide-binding mechanism enabled by surface oxidation layers of transition-metal phosphide and chalcogenide materials. We for the first time find that CoP nanoparticles strongly adsorb polysulfides because their natural oxidation (forming Co–O–P-like species) activates the surface Co sites for binding polysulfides via strong Co–S bonding. With a surface oxidation layer capable of confining polysulfides and an inner core suitable for conducting electrons, the CoP nanoparticles are thus a desirable candidate for stabilizing and improving the performance of sulfur cathodes in lithium–sulfur batteries. Adsorptive separation using C 2 H 6 -selective porous materials can directly produce high-purity C 2 H 4 in a single operation but suffers from poor selectivity. Here, we report an approach to boost the separation of C 2 H 6 over C 2 H 4, involving the control of pore structures in two isoreticular ultramicroporous metal–organic framework (MOF) materials with weakly polar pore surface for strengthened binding affinity toward C 2 H 6 over C 2 H 4 . Per- and polyfluorinated alkyl substances (PFAS), such as perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA), perfluorooctanesulfonate (PFOS), and ammonium perfluoro-2-propoxypropionate (GenX), contaminate ground and surface waters throughout the world. The cost and performance limitations of current PFAS removal technologies motivate efforts to develop selective and high-affinity adsorbents. Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) are unexplored yet promising adsorbents because of their high surface area and tunable pore sizes. Here we show that imine-linked two-dimensional (2D) COFs bearing primary amines adsorb GenX rapidly at environmentally relevant concentrations. COFs with partial amine incorporation showed the highest capacity and fastest removal, suggesting that the synergistic combination of the polar group and hydrophobic surfaces are responsible for GenX binding. A COF with 28% amine loading also removed more than 90% of 12 out of 13 PFAS. These results demonstrate the promise of COFs for PFAS removal and suggest design criteria for maximizing adsorbent performance.

However, many commercially available dyes suffer from small Stokes shifts, resulting in poor signal-to-noise ratio and self-quenching on current microscope configurations. Using 8 nm FePt NPs as an example, we demonstrate that Fe can be stabilized more efficiently in a core/shell structured L1 0 -FePt/Pt with a 5 Å Pt shell. The integration of mechanophores, motifs that transduce mechanical forces into chemical reactions, allows creating materials with stress-dependent properties. Typical mechanophores are activated by cleaving weak covalent bonds, but these reactions can also be triggered by other stimuli, and this renders the behavior unspecific. Here we show that this problem can be overcome by extending the molecular-shuttle function of rotaxanes to mechanical activation. A mechanically interlocked mechanophore composed of a fluorophore-carrying macrocycle and a dumbbell-shaped molecule containing a matching quencher was integrated into a polyurethane elastomer. Deformation of this polymer causes a fluorescence turn-on, due to the spatial separation of fluorophore and quencher. This process is specific, efficient, instantly reversible, and elicits an easily detectable optical signal that correlates with the applied force.

The ability to manipulate quantum dot (QD) surfaces is foundational to their technological deployment. Surface manipulation of metal halide perovskite (MHP) QDs has proven particularly challenging in comparison to that of more established inorganic materials due to dynamic surface species and low material formation energy; most conventional methods of chemical manipulation targeted at the MHP QD surface will result in transformation or dissolution of the MHP crystal. In previous work, we have demonstrated record-efficiency QD solar cells (QDSCs) based on ligand-exchange procedures that electronically couple MHP QDs yet maintain their nanocrystalline size, which stabilizes the corner-sharing structure of the constituent PbI 6 4– octahedra with optoelectronic properties optimal for solar energy conversion. In this work, we employ a variety of spectroscopic techniques to develop a molecular-level understanding of the MHP QD surface chemistry in this system. We individually target both the anionic (oleate) and cationic (oleylammonium) ligands. We find that atmospheric moisture aids the…

    Photoinduced Deaminative Borylation of Alkylamines

Jingjing Wu, Lin Feng He, Adam Noble, Varinder Kumar Aggarwal

An operationally simple deaminative borylation reaction of primary alkylamines has been developed. The formation of electron-donor-acceptor complexes between N-alkylpyridinium salts and bis(catecholato)diboron enables photoinduced single-electron transfer and fragmentation to carbon-centered radicals, which are subsequently borylated. The mild conditions allow a diverse range of readily available alkylamines to be efficiently converted into synthetically valuable alkylboronic esters under catalyst-free conditions.

Lipid droplets (LDs) are intracellular lipid-rich organelles that regulate the storage of neutral lipids and were recently found to be involved in many physiological processes, metabolic disorders, and diseases including obesity, diabetes, and cancers. Herein we present a family of new fluorogenic merocyanine fluorophores based on an indolenine moiety and a dioxaborine barbiturate derivative. These so-called StatoMerocyanines (SMCy) fluoresce from yellow to the near-infrared (NIR) in oil with an impressive fluorescence enhancement compared to aqueous media. Additionally, SMCy display remarkably high molar extinction coefficients (up to 390 000 M –1 cm –1 ) and high quantum yield values (up to 100%). All the members of this new family specifically stain the LDs in live cells with very low background noise. Unlike Nile Red, a well-known lipid droplet marker, SMCy dyes possess narrow absorption and emission bands in the visible, thus allowing multicolor imaging. SMCy proved to be compatible with fixation and led to high-quality 3D images of lipid droplets in cells and tissues. Their…

Two cheliform non-fullerene acceptors, DTPC-IC and DTPC-DFIC, based on a highly electron-rich core, dithienopicenocarbazole (DTPC), are synthesized, showing ultra-narrow bandgaps (as low as 1.21 eV). The two-dimensional nitrogen-containing conjugated DTPC possesses strong electron-donating capability, which induces intense intramolecular charge transfer and intermolecular π-π stacking in derived acceptors. The solar cell based on DTPC-DFIC and a spectrally complementary polymer donor, PTB7-Th, showed a high power conversion efficiency of 10.21% and an extremely low energy loss of 0.45 eV, which is the lowest among reported efficient OSCs.

Ammonia borane hydrolysis is considered as a potential means of safe and fast method of H 2 production if it is efficiently catalyzed. Here a series of nearly monodispersed alloyed bimetallic nanoparticle catalysts are introduced, optimized among transition metals, and found to be extremely efficient and highly selective with sharp positive synergy between 2/3 Ni and 1/3 Pt embedded inside a zeolitic imidazolate framework (ZIF-8) support. These catalysts are much more efficient for H 2 release than either Ni or Pt analogues alone on this support, and for instance the best catalyst Ni 2 Pt@ZiF-8 achieves a TOF of 600 mol H 2 ·mol catal –1 ·min –1 and 2222 mol H 2 ·mol Pt –1 ·min –1 under ambient conditions, which overtakes performances of previous Pt-base catalysts. The presence of NaOH boosts H 2 evolution that becomes 87 times faster than in its absence with Ni 2 Pt@ZiF-8, whereas NaOH decreases H 2 evolution on the related Pt@ZiF-8 catalyst. The ZIF-8 support appears outstanding and much more efficient than other supports including graphene oxide, active carbon and SBA-15 with…

Boosting Formate Production in Electrocatalytic CO 2 Reduction over Wide Potential Window on Pd Surfaces

    Show abstract

Facile interconversion between CO 2 and formate/formic acid (FA) is of broad interest in energy storage and conversion and neutral carbon emission. Historically, electrochemical CO 2 reduction reaction to formate on Pd surfaces was limited to a narrow potential range positive of −0.25 V (vs RHE). Herein, a boron-doped Pd catalyst (Pd–B/C), with a high CO tolerance to facilitate dehydrogenation of FA/formate to CO 2, is initially explored for electrochemical CO 2 reduction over the potential range of −0.2 V to −1.0 V (vs RHE), with reference to Pd/C. The experimental results demonstrate that the faradaic efficiency for formate (η HCOO – ) reaches ca. 70% over 2 h of electrolysis in CO 2 -saturated 0.1 M KHCO 3 at −0.5 V (vs RHE) on Pd–B/C, that is ca. 12 times as high as that on homemade or commercial Pd/C, leading to a formate concentration of ca. 234 mM mg –1 Pd, or ca. 18 times as high as that on Pd/C, without optimization of the catalyst layer and the electrolyte. Furthermore, the competitive selectivity η HCOO – / η CO on Pd–B/C is always significantly higher than that on Pd/C…

We design and synthesize two isomeric fused-ring electron acceptors, FNIC1 and FNIC2, which have the same end-groups and side-chains, but isomeric fused-nine-ring cores. Subtle changes in the two isomers influence their electronic, optical, charge-transport, and morphological properties. As compared with FNIC1, FNIC2 film exhibits a red-shifted absorption peak at 794 nm (752 nm for FNIC1), larger electron affinity of 4.00 eV (3.92 eV for FNIC1), smaller ionization energy of 5.56 eV (5.61 eV for FNIC1), and higher electron mobility of 1.7 × 10 –3 cm 2 V –1 s –1 (1.2 × 10 –3 cm 2 V –1 s –1 for FNIC1). The as-cast organic solar cells based on PTB7-Th:FNIC2 blends exhibit a power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 13.0%, which is significantly higher than that of PTB7-Th:FNIC1-based devices (10.3%). Semitransparent devices based on PTB7-Th:FNIC2 blends exhibit PCEs varying from 9.51% to 11.6% at different average visible transmittance (AVT, 20.3– 13.6%), significantly higher than those of PTB7-Th:FNIC1-based devices (7.58–9.14% with AVT of 20.2– 14.7%).

    Show abstract

We investigate the consequences of dimensional confinement on halide double perovskites by synthesizing two-dimensional analogues of the recently reported three-dimensional double perovskite Cs 2 AgBiBr 6 . The layered perovskites (BA) 4 AgBiBr 8 ( 1 ) and (BA) 2 CsAgBiBr 7 ( 2 ) (BA = CH 3 (CH 2 ) 3 NH 3 + ) feature metal-halide sheets of mono and bilayer thickness, respectively, where the ordered double-perovskite lattice is partitioned by organic cations. Electronic structure calculations indicate that the indirect bandgap of Cs 2 AgBiBr 6 becomes direct when the infinitely thick inorganic lattice is reduced to monolayer thickness. Calculations on model systems allow us to separate the effects of dimensional reduction from those of the accompanying structural distortions in the inorganic sublattice. Detailed optical characterization shows that the photophysical properties of 1 and 2 are markedly different than those of their well-studied lead-halide analogs. Hybrid layered derivatives of double perovskites substantially expand on the substitutional flexibility of halide…
