Means-End Chain theory: a critical review of literature

    Elena Borgardt

    44 citationsOpen access (CC-BY-NC-ND)doi:10.15611/pn.2020.3.12OpenAlex

    Show abstract

This study provides the first critical and systematic investigation of the literature on Means-End Chain theory after the ground-breaking book “Understanding Consumer Decision Making: The Means-End Approach to Marketing and Advertising Strategy” by Olson and Reynolds (2001). The sample of 157 articles published in the Science Direct, Emerald, and Wiley databases was investigated. The period covers scientific literature published from 2001 to 2018. The paper shows the main theoretical concepts, methodological approaches, research problems, and findings. The results of the literature review demonstrate that the Means-End Chain theory is an evolving area of research and is gaining importance in academia and management. Some important gaps in the knowledge of theoretical and methodological levels were identified, and the most important directions for further studies were proposed

Sustainable supply chain management – past, present and future

    Blanka Tundys

    12 citationsOpen access (CC-BY-NC-ND)doi:10.15611/pn.2020.3.15OpenAlex

Sustainable supply chain management has been an issue in both literature and business practice since the 1990s. Both the development phases and the definition range (including the complexity and number of individual processes) have been subject to changes and modifications over the years. The multitude of definitions and theoretical scope is a barrier to the implementation of the concept in economic practice. The aim of this paper is to show how it has evaluated the concept and thematic scope in theoretical point of view and in relation to its practical implementation. The research was carried out using content analysis methods, as well as selected case studies. The most important findings include: a presentation and change in the understanding and application of SSCM; bibliometric analysis with an interpretation of the state, volume and scope of SC research; directions and trends in research including the identification of research gaps that may be a basis for further research

The effectiveness of the Beneish model in the detection of accounting violations – the example of companies sanctioned by the Polish Financial Supervision Authority

    Michał Comporek

    10 citationsOpen access (CC-BY-SA)doi:10.15611/pn.2020.10.02OpenAlex

    Show abstract

The main purpose of the paper is to assess the effectiveness of the eight-factor Beneish model in detecting manipulations in the financial statements of public companies listed on the Warsaw Stock Exchange. The research sample consists of 27 enterprises that were sanctioned at least once by the PFSA for irregularities in compliance with the IAS/ IFRS principles in the period 2006-2018. Empirical analysis proved that in the selected group of enterprises, the original version of the Beneish model is characterized by a relatively low degree of usefulness, thus it should be considered as an average tool supporting the work of auditors, statutory auditors and stock exchange investors, and at the same time a starting point for the further search for instruments to detect accounting violations, developed and adapted to conditions of the Polish capital market

The article presents the results of the introduction of the provisions suggested by the European Union's legislative authorities with regard to transport market regulation, referred to as the Mobility Package. The business of enterprises is based on planning, both in the short and long term, business decisions are made in advance, and internal and external factors taken into consideration. To emphasize the importance of the issues discussed, it is worth noting that the regulations under study constituted the first such in-depth change of the market since Poland joined the European Union. An earlier analysis of the solutions suggested allows enterprises to get ready for the upcoming changes and to take appropriate decisions to minimize their effects, if any. Consequently, the purpose of this paper was to attempt to assess the impact of the Mobility Package on the Polish road transport industry. To study this goal it was necessary to gather and analyse extensive research material originating from official statistical data, industry reports and scientific publications of domestic and…

Selection of the method of linear ordering using the example of assessing the level of socio-economic development of European Union countries

    Agnieszka Sompolska‐Rzechuła

    7 citationsOpen access (CC-BY-SA)doi:10.15611/pn.2020.7.09OpenAlex

    Show abstract

The aim of the article is to present the issues of choosing the optimal procedure for the linear ordering of objects and assessing the correctness of the selected methods of the linear ordering. The goal was achieved by creating linear ordering of objects using various methods for normalizing the value of diagnostic features. An aggregate measure based on various properties of the synthetic feature was used to select the optimal ordering, among others, the compatibility of the mapping, the correlation of the synthetic line variable with diagnostic variables, the rank correlation of the synthetic variable with diagnostic variables and the variability of the synthetic variable. The study was conducted based on the example of data concerning 28 European Union countries according to the level of socio-economic development in the context of sustainable development concerning society, economy and the environment. The linear ordering of countries using the quotient transformation with an arithmetic mean turned out to be the most correct ordering
