The origin and assignment of the complex main and satellite X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) features of the cations in ionic compounds have been the subject of extensive theoretical studies using different methods. There is agreement that within a molecular orbital model, one needs to take into account different types of configurations. Specifically, those where a core electron is removed, but no other configuration changes are made and those where in addition to ionization, there are also shake or charge-transfer changes to the ionic configuration. However, there are strong disagreements about the assignment of XPS features to these configurations. The present work is directed toward resolving the origin of main and satellite features for the Ni 2p XPS of NiO based on ab initio molecular orbital wave functions (WFs) for a cluster model of NiO. A major problem in earlier ab initio XPS studies of ionic compounds has been the use of a common set of orbitals that was not able to properly describe all the ionic configurations that contribute to the full XPS spectra. This is…

The synthesis of five- and six-membered oxygen- and nitrogen-containing heterocycles has been regarded as the most fundamental issue in organic chemistry and chemical industry because they are used in producing high-value products. In this study, an efficient, economic, sustainable, and green protocol for multicomponent synthesis has been developed. The one-pot direct Knoevenagel condensation–Michael addition–cyclization sequences for the transformation of aromatic aldehydes, malononitrile, and 4-hydroxycoumarin or phthalhydrazide generate the corresponding dihydropyrano[2,3- c ]chromenes and 1 H -pyrazolo[1,2- b ]phthalazine-5,10-diones over a novel mesoporous metal–organic framework-based supported Cu(II) nanocatalyst [UiO-66@Schiff-Base-Cu(II)] under ambient conditions. Moreover, the [UiO-66@Schiff-Base-Cu(II)] complex efficiently catalyzed the selectively large-scale synthesis of the target molecules with high yield and large turnover numbers. As presented, the catalyst demonstrates excellent reusability and stability and can be recycled up to six runs without noticeable loss of…

Due to the increasing environmental pollution caused by human activities, environmental remediation has become an important subject for humans and environmental safety. The quest for beneficial pathways to remove organic and inorganic contaminants has been the theme of considerable investigations in the past decade. The easy and quick separation made magnetic solid-phase extraction (MSPE) a popular method for the removal of different pollutants from the environment. Metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) are a class of porous materials best known for their ultrahigh porosity. Moreover, these materials can be easily modified with useful ligands and form various composites with varying characteristics, thus rendering them an ideal candidate as adsorbing agents for MSPE. Herein, research on MSPE, encompassing MOFs as sorbents and Fe 3 O 4 as a magnetic component, is surveyed for environmental applications. Initially, assorted pollutants and their threats to human and environmental safety are introduced with a brief introduction to MOFs and MSPE. Subsequently, the deployment of magnetic MOFs…

The design and preparation of novel multifunctional lanthanide metal–organic frameworks (Ln-MOFs) have been arisen widespread attention. In particular, Ln-MOFs have shown great luminescence potential in chemical sensing. Herein, a new benzothiadiazole-based Eu-MOF {[(CH 3 ) 2 NH 2 ][Eu(BTDB) 2 ]·2H 2 O} n ( JXUST-11 ) was obtained based on 4,4′-(benzo[ c ][1,2,5]thiadiazole-4,7-diyl)dibenzoic acid (H 2 BTDB), which exhibits a chain-based three-dimensional framework. Moreover, JXUST-11 is considered as a photoluminescent sensor to identify Al 3+ and Ga 3+ ions by fluorescence enhancement with the detection limits of 2.9 and 10.2 ppm, severally. Importantly, Al 3+ and Ga 3+ can be discerned with the naked eye by color change under a natural lamp. In addition, a portable MOF film based on JXUST-11 was developed for Al 3+ and Ga 3+ detection. This is the first Ln-MOF that can be employed as a naked-eye fluorescent probe to identify Ga 3+ . Interestingly, JXUST-11 is also capable of detecting Al 3+ and Ga 3+ in living cells.

To develop efficient oxygen evolution reaction (OER) catalysts for seawater electrolysis, the ultrathin MnO x film-covered NiFe-layered double-hydroxide nanosheet array is directly assembled on Ni foam (MnO x /NiFe-LDH/NF) by hydrothermal and electrodeposition in turn. This catalyst demonstrates excellent OER-selective activity in alkaline saline electrolytes. In 1 M KOH/0.5 M NaCl and 1 M KOH/seawater electrolytes, MnO x /NiFe-LDH/NF exhibits lower overpotentials at 100 mA cm –2 (η 100 values of 265 and 276 mV, respectively) and Tafel slopes (73 and 77 mV decade –1, respectively) than does the NiFe-LDH/NF electrode (η 100 values of 298 and 327 mV and Tafel slopes of 91 and 140 mV decade –1, respectively). In alkaline saline solutions, the stability and durability of the former are also better than those of the latter. The good OER selectivity and…

The electrooxidation of ethylene glycol (EG) is of vital significance for the conversion from biomass energy into electrical energy via direct fuel cells. However, the EG oxidation reaction (EGOR) suffers from poor efficiency due to the limitation of high-performance electrocatalysts for cleaving the C–C bonds. Herein, this limitation is successfully addressed by fabricating the doughnut-shaped Pd–Bi 2 Te 3 heterostructured catalyst. Notably, the heterojunction Pd–Bi 2 Te 3 nanocatalyst has been demonstrated to be highly active toward the EGOR with superb activity and durability, in which a mass activity as high as 2420.8 mA mg –1 is achieved in alkaline media, being 1.7 times higher than that of the commercial Pd/C catalyst. Upon combination of experimental results with mechanism studies, it is indicated that the remarkable EGOR performance is attributed to the enlarged active areas that stemmed from the doughnut-like structure, as well as the strong synergistic effect from Pd–Bi 2 Te 3 and Pd. More importantly, the highly electroactive Pd–Bi 2 Te 3 can accelerate charge transfer…

The rapid detection of antibiotics in agricultural products is of great significance. In this work, two stable fluorescent metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), BUT-178 and BUT-179, are synthesized and used to detect tetracycline antibiotics. Among them, BUT-179 exhibits better performance in the detection of different tetracycline antibiotics in water and eggs. The limits of detection of BUT-179 toward tetracycline, aureomycin, oxytetracycline, and doxycycline all reach the nanomolar level. Furthermore, the cycling tests confirm that BUT-179 can be easily recovered and repeatedly used without an obvious performance loss. This work demonstrates the excellent application potential of MOFs for food safety, especially the fluorescence detection of antibiotics in foods.

It is a challenge to fabricate atomically dispersed metal clusters in polymeric carbon nitride (PCN) for durable photocatalytic reactions owing to the thermodynamic stability limitation. Herein, atomically dispersed Ru clusters are implanted into the PCN skeleton matrix based on an ionic diffusion and coordination (IDC) strategy, the stability of which is improved owing to the robust Ru–N bonds in the formed RuN 4 and RuN 3 configurations. Additionally, RuN 4 and RuN 3 as charge transport bridges between two adjacent melon strands efficaciously conquer hydrogen bond restriction in the skeleton to facilitate the in-plane mobility and separation of charge carriers. Moreover, the synergistic effect of adjacent Ru atoms is triggered on the assembled RuN 3 –RuN 4 and RuN 3 –RuN 3 in the atomically dispersed Ru clusters to significantly decrease hydrogen adsorption energy. As a result, the optimal PCN-Ru photocatalyst achieves nearly 6 times higher than the photocatalytic hydrogen evolution (PHE) rate of the Pt/PCN benchmark and maintains the long-term stable running for 104 h of 26…

Trivalent metal ions (Cr 3+, Al 3+, and Fe 3+ ) constitute a major section of the environmental pollutants, and their excess accumulation has a detrimental effect on health, so their detection in trace quantity has been a hot topic of research. A highly scalable 3D porous Zn-based luminescent metal–organic framework (MOF) has been synthesized by exploiting the mixed ligand synthesis concept. The strategic selection of an aromatic π-conjugated organic linker and N-rich spacer containing the azine functionality as metal ion binding sites immobilized across the pore spaces, have made this MOF an ideal turn-on sensor for Al 3+, Cr 3+, and Fe 3+ ions with very high sensitivity, selectivity, and recyclability. An in-depth study revealed absorbance caused enhancement mechanism (ACE) responsible for such turn-on phenomena. In order to make the detection process straightforward, convenient, portable, and economically viable, we have fabricated MOF test paper strips (the MOF could be simply immobilized onto the paper strips) for naked eye visual detection under UV light, which, thus,…

The development of cost-effective and efficient oxygen evolution reaction (OER) catalysts has found increasing popularity due to the sluggish kinetics of OER, which has hampered the H 2 production by H 2 O electrolysis. In this study, Fe 2 Ni MIL-88 (denoted FeNi) was composited by reduced graphene oxide (rGO, denoted R). Owing to the high porosity and abundant active sites of bimetallic MOF, proper conductivity of rGO, and the synergistic impact of Ni and Fe, the optimal composite (R@FeNi (1:1)) offered remarkable OER activity in alkaline environments. The obtained composite was employed in the OER, which led to a low overpotential of 264 mV at a current density of 10 mA cm –2 with a Tafel slope of 62 mV dec –1 . Also, the bimetallic Fe 2 Ni MIL-88 nanorods grown on rGO led to a reduction in the onset potential of the OER. These findings exceeded the results of standard IrO 2 -based catalysts; they are also comparable or even better than the previously reported MOF-based catalysts.

Vast attention from researchers is being given to the development of suitable oxygen evolution reaction (OER) electrocatalysts via water electrolysis. Being highly abundant, the use of transition-metal-based OER catalysts has been attractive more recently. Among the various transition-metal-based electrocatalysts, the use of layered double hydroxides (LDHs) has gained special attention from researchers owing to their high stability under OER conditions. In this work, we have reported the synthesis of trimetallic NiCoV-LDH via a simple wet-chemical method. The synthesized NiCoV-LDH possesses aggregated sheet-like structures and is screened for OER studies in alkaline medium. In the study of OER activity, the as-prepared catalyst demanded 280 mV overpotential and this was 42 mV less than the overpotential essential for pristine NiCo-LDH. Moreover, doping of a third metal into the NiCo-LDH system might lead to an increase in TOF values by almost three times. Apart from this, the electronic structural evaluation confirms that the doping of V 3+ into NiCo-LDH could synergistically favor…

Herein, a unique 2D/2D step-scheme (S-scheme) photocatalyst of CsPbBr 3 /BiOCl is constructed by the self-assembly of CsPbBr 3 and BiOCl nanosheets (NSs). In this article, a novel step-scheme (S-scheme) photocatalyst of CsPbBr 3 quantum dots/BiOBr nanosheets (CPB/BiOBr) was fabricated via a facile self-assembly process. The strong interaction, staggered energy band alignments, and much different Fermi levels between CsPbBr 3 and BiOBr promised the formation of an S-scheme heterojunction. The superior photocatalytic performance originated from the impactful spatial separation of photoinduced electron–hole pairs, as well as the preservation of strongly reductive electrons for CO 2 reduction. This work offers a rational strategy to design S-scheme heterojunctions based on lead halide perovskites, which are expected to have potential applications in the field of photocatalysis…

The development of chemically stable metal–organic framework (MOF)-based luminescent platforms for toxic ion detection in an aqueous medium is highly challenging because most of the classical MOFs are prone to water degradation, and that is the reason why most of the MOF-based luminescent sensors use a nonaqueous medium for sensing. In this contribution, we report two new water-stable luminescent MOFs (Zn-MOF-1 and Zn-MOF-2), assembled from a mixed-ligand synthesis approach. Because of the presence of a hydrophobic trifluoromethyl group to the backbone and stronger metal–N coordination, these MOFs exhibit excellent stability not only in water but also in acidic/alkaline aqueous solutions (pH = 3–10). Four new isostructural lanthanide metal–organic frameworks (MOFs), namely {[Ln(DMTP-DC) 1.5 (H 2 O) 3 ]·DMF} n [H 2 DMTP-DC = 2′,5′-dimethoxytriphenyl-4,4″-dicarboxylic acid; Ln III = Eu III ( 1 ), Gd III ( 2 ), Tb III ( 3 ), and Dy III ( 4 )], have been synthesized and characterized. Single-crystal structure analysis reveals that 1 – 4 are three-dimensional Ln-MOFs with rich H-bonding of coordinated H 2 O molecules in the network channels. The X-ray diffraction patterns indicate that Ln-MOF 1 displays good stabilities in organic solvents and aqueous solutions with distinct pH values. Both 1 and 3 show characteristic emission of Ln III ions. Ln-MOF 1 can be used as a ratiometric fluorescence sensor for arginine and lysine in aqueous solution, and the detection limits are 24.38 μM for arginine and 9.31 μM for lysine. All 1 – 4 show proton conductivity related to relative humidity (RH) and temperature, and the maximum conductivity values of 1 – 4 at 55 °C and 100% RH are 9.94 × 10 –5, 1.62 × 10 –4, 1.71 × 10 –4, and 2.67 × 10 –4 S·cm –1, respectively. The high catalytic activity of metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) can be realized by increasing their effective active sites, which prompts us to perform the functionalization on selected linkers by introducing a strong Lewis basic group of fluorine. Herein, the exquisite combination of paddle-wheel [Cu 2 (CO 2 ) 4 (H 2 O)] clusters and meticulously designed fluorine-funtionalized tetratopic 2′,3′-difluoro-[ p -terphenyl]-3,3″,5,5″-tetracarboxylic acid (F-H 4 ptta) engenders one peculiar nanocaged {Cu 2 }-organic framework of {[Cu 2 (F-ptta)(H 2 O) 2 ]·5DMF·2H 2 O} n ( NUC-54 ), which features two types of nanocaged voids (9.8 Å × 17.2 Å and 10.1 Å × 12.4 Å) shaped by 12 paddle-wheel [Cu 2 (COO) 4 H 2 O) 2 ] secondary building units, leaving a calculated solvent-accessible void volume of 60.6%. The design of white-light phosphor is highly desirable for practical applications in SSL (solid-state lighting) and its related fields. Dye-loaded metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have been widely demonstrated as one type of promising down conversion materials for WLEDs (white-light-emitting diodes), but two issues (dye leakage and inadequate quantum efficiency) require to be addressed before possible applications. Here, a series of single-phase dyes@In-MOF phosphors have been prepared in two different ways: the in-situ process and soaking method. The study of these dyes@In-MOF phosphors confirms the importance of this in-situ process that could effectively increase dye loading and quantum efficiency and greatly decrease dye leakage. The development of supramolecular coordination complexes (SCCs) with a bright aggregate state or mechanical-stimuli-responsive luminescence is very significant and challenging. Herein, we report the synthesis of three different supramolecular platinum(II) metallacycles via coordination-driven self-assembly of a diplatinum(II) acceptor and organic donors with a triphenylamine, carbazole, or tetraphenylethylene moiety. The triphenylamine-modified SCC exhibits aggregation-induced emission enhancement (AIEE) but no mechanofluorochromism. The carbazole and tetraphenylethylene-based SCCs exhibit changes in aggregate fluorescence and also exhibit reversible mechanofluorochromism. This work not only reports three rare metallacycles with AIEE, aggregate fluorescence change, or mechanofluorochromic nature but also explores their potential applications in cell imaging and solid-state lighting.

Tuning the electronic state of a nanocatalyst is of vital importance for elevating its catalytic performance toward oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Herein, a cation–anion dual doping strategy has been proposed for modifying the electronic structure of CoP via doping Fe and S atoms. Impressively, Fe doping has been demonstrated to be favorable for improving the carrier density of CoP to produce more hydroxyl radicals ( • OH), while S doping can further modify the electronic structure of CoP to improve the charge-transfer characteristics, thereby synergistically decreasing the energy barrier for the transformation of O* to OOH* and promoting the electrocatalytic OER performance. More importantly, the highly open nanobox structure is also beneficial for the exposure of more accessible catalytically active sites, which can substantially facilitate the electron and mass transport, leading to the superb catalytic OER performance. Capturing volatile radionuclide iodine produced in the nuclear industry is a crucial environmental issue. In previous studies, the principal efficient adsorbent for iodine capture was silver-containing zeolite. As silver-containing zeolites are expensive, alternate copper-loaded porous zeolites, including CuCl loaded NaY reduced by H 2 (denoted as H 2 CuY) and CO (denoted as COCuY), were studied for iodine adsorption at moderate temperatures. The current work also discusses the influence of copper valency on iodine adsorption. Due to the copper sites and nanosized pore structure, H 2 CuY and COCuY showed high iodine adsorption capacities of 450 and 219 mg/g, respectively. The iodine adsorption capacity of H 2 CuY was higher than that of silver-loaded zeolites. Moreover, H 2 CuY and COCuY adsorbed volatile iodine through a chemical mechanism involving the copper sites of different valencies, and the Cu 0 was more effective in adsorbing iodine than Cu + . These copper-loaded zeolites with strong chemical interactions with iodine and high iodine adsorption capacities provided the…

By immobilizing the chiral center l -histidine ( l -His) into a Zr-based metal–organic framework (MOF) through post-synthetic ligand exchange, a chiral compound MOF-His has been prepared. On this basis, MOF-His is hybridized with Eu 3+ ions to obtain the final responsive compound Eu@MOF-His. It is worth noting that the bifunctional material exhibits enantioselective luminescence properties for tryptophan enantiomers. The experimental results demonstrate that tryptophan enantiomers can effectively quench the red-light emission of Eu 3+ ions, and also, the quenching rates are various, which may originate from the differences in the interaction between analytes and chiral recognition sites. In addition, Eu@MOF-His can realize the sensing of tryptophan enantiomers in serum. Concurrently, the compound possesses reusability, high sensitivity, and fast response speed, which means that it has the potential to serve as an excellent fluorescent sensor for detecting and identifying tryptophan enantiomers.

Bright red-emitting phosphors with high color purity and high photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) are highly demanded for the fabrication of high-performance warm-white light-emitting diodes (LEDs). Herein, we demonstrated a novel efficient Eu 3+ -activated Ca 2 LaHf 2 Al 3 O 12 garnet phosphor with excellent luminescence properties for near-ultraviolet (near-UV) excited warm-white LEDs. The Ca 2 LaHf 2 Al 3 O 12:Eu 3+ phosphors exhibited an intense excitation spectrum in the near-UV region with a maximum around 394 nm, and they produced dazzling red luminescence peaking at 592, 614, 659, and 711 nm due to the 5 D 0 → 7 F J ( J = 1–4) transitions of Eu 3+ ions when the excitation wavelength was set at 394 nm. Luminescent properties have been studied as a function of Eu 3+ doping concentration, and the highest emission intensity was achieved at 50 mol % Eu 3+, while the dipole–dipole interaction brought the concentration quenching effect. Photocatalytic CO 2 reduction to carbon fuels is regarded as an ideal and sustainable way to provide clean energy and solve environmental crisis. Herein, a p–n Co 3 O 4 /TiO 2 heterojunction photocatalyst was synthesized by one-step pyrolysis of self-assembly ZIF-67/MIL-125, which was used in photocatalytic CO 2 reduction for the first time. Co 3 O 4 nanocages were highly dispersed on the surface of TiO 2 nanoplates with an intimate contact. The optimal Co 3 O 4 /TiO 2 exhibited a significantly enhanced CO evolution rate of 1256 μmol g –1 h –1 under simulated solar light, which was 2.4 times higher than that of pure Co 3 O 4 . The high photocatalytic performance of Co 3 O 4 /TiO 2 was attributed to its enriched active sites and formed p–n heterojunctions. According to the electrocatalytic measurements, the possible mechanism and photoinduced charge transfer process were discussed in detail. We believe that this research provides a facile and efficient approach to fabricate MOF-derived heterojunction photocatalysts for CO 2 reduction.

The role of oxygen vacancies (O V ) on the surface of the as-prepared, zinnia-shaped morphology of CuO nanostructures and their marigold forms on calcination at 800 °C has been investigated through the study of model catalytic reactions of reduction of 4-nitrophenol and aerobic oxidation of benzyl alcohol. The O V on the surfaces of different morphologies of CuO have been identified and quantified through Rietveld analysis and HRTEM, EPR, and XPS studies. The structure–activity relationships between surface oxygen vacancies (O V ) and catalytic performance have been systematically investigated. The enhanced catalytic performance of the cubic CuO nanostructures compared to their as-prepared forms has been attributed to the formation of surface oxygen species on the reactive and dominant (110) surface that has low oxygen vacancy formation energy. In this work, the advantages of in situ loading, heterojunction construction, and facet regulation were integrated based on the poly-facet-exposed BiOCl single crystal, and a facet-oriented supported heterojunction of Cu 2 O and BiOCl was fabricated (Cu 2 O@BiOCl[100]). The photocatalytic nitrogen reduction reaction (pNRR) activity of Cu 2 O@BiOCl[100] was as high as 181.9 μmol·g –1 ·h –1, which is 4.09, 7.13, and 1.83 times that of Cu 2 O, BiOCl, and Cu 2 O@BiOCl-ran (Cu 2 O randomly supported on BiOCl). Combined with the results of the photodeposition experiment, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy characterization, and DFT calculation, the mechanism of Cu 2 O@BiOCl[100] for pNRR was discussed. When Cu 2 O directionally loaded on the [100] facet of BiOCl, electrons generated by Cu 2 O will be transmitted to the [100] facet of BiOCl through Z-scheme electron transmission. Due to the directional separation characteristics of charge in BiOCl, the electrons transmitted from Cu 2 O are enriched on the [001] facet of BiOCl, which will together with the original electrons generated by…

Mechanoluminescence materials that emit light under mechanical stimulation have attracted widespread attention in sensing, anticounterfeiting, and imaging applications. In this study, a series of Sr 1– x Bi x ZnSO (0.001 ≤ x ≤ 0.1) samples was synthesized by the method of high temperature solid-state reaction. It is worth noting that the distortion degree of the SrO 3 S 3 octahedron was increased with increasing Bi 3+ concentration, and the color manipulated Sr 1– x Bi x ZnSO which can emit different photoluminescence (blue to dark blue and finally red) and mechanoluminescence (orange to red) colors is obtained. Moreover, the deep traps can stably store and provide electronic supplements in shallow traps released under mechanical stimulation. Therefore, devices made of SrZnSO:Bi 3+ phosphor and polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) can be used as thermo-mechano-opto three-mode anticounterfeiting. The ML intensity is linear to the external load and can be utilized for stress sensing or imaging.

A Ce/Ti-based bimetallic 2-aminoterephthalate metal–organic framework (MOF) was synthesized and evaluated for photocatalytic reduction of CO 2 in comparison with an isoreticular pristine monometallic Ce-terephthalate MOF. Owing to highly selective CO 2 adsorption capability, optimized band gaps, higher flux of photogenerated electron–hole pairs, and a lower rate of recombination, this material exhibited better photocatalytic reduction of CO 2 and lower hydrogen evolution compared to Ce-terephthalate. Thorough probing of the surface and electronic structure inferred that the reducibility of Ce 4+ to Ce 3+ was due to the introduction of an amine functional group into the linker, and low-lying Ti(3 d ) orbitals in Ce/Ti-2-aminoterephthalate facilitated the photoreduction reaction. Both the MOFs were calcined to their respective oxides of Ce 1– x Ti x O 2 and CeO 2, and the electrocatalytic reduction of CO 2 was performed over the oxidic materials. In contrast to the photocatalytic reaction mechanism, the lattice substitution of Ti in the CeO 2 fluorite cubic structure showed a better…

The intermolecular noncovalent interactions in the crystal structures were assessed by density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The anticancer activity of Pd complexes in breast cancer cell lines was limited by their solubility. Pd(dpp-Bian) complexes with dmit and dsit ligands as well as an uncoordinated dpp-Bian ligand were devoid of cytotoxicity, while the [Pd(dpp-Bian)Cl 2 ] complex was cytotoxic. On the contrary, all Pt(dpp-Bian) complexes demonstrated anticancer activity in a low micromolar concentration range, which was 8–20 times higher than the activity of cisplatin, and up to 2.5-fold selectivity toward cancer cells over healthy fibroblasts. Broadband near-infrared (NIR) phosphors are necessary materials for developing portable NIR light sources. Moreover, exploiting an NIR phosphor with a main peak located beyond a wavelength of 900 nm remains a challenge because this spectral range has great potential in biological nondestructive testing and solution testing. In this study, a range of Cr 3+ -doped ZnTa 2 O 6 (ZTO) phosphors were completely synthesized by a solid-state method, which show broadband Cr 3+ emission centered at 935 nm with a large full width at half maximum (FWHM) of 185 nm due to two distorted octahedral sites. A packaged phosphor-converted light-emitting diode (pc-LED) device is used to penetrate a 5-cm-thick chicken breast and identify diverse solutions based on differences in the measured transmission spectra. The results indicate broad application prospects in the field of biological tissue penetration and solution analysis.

High-performance microwave-absorbing materials (MAMs) derived from metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) have attracted considerable attention due to their tunable chemical composition and microstructure. In this contribution, a core–shell-structured Co/MnO/C nanocomplex was prepared using a CoMn-MIL MOF by a facile hydrothermal synthesis and subsequent pyrolysis process. The optimal microwave absorption (MA) property of the as-prepared Co/MnO/C nanocomplex was achieved by the regulation of the Co 2+ /Mn 2+ molar ratio. The minimum reflection loss (RL min ) of the Co/MnO/C-31 nanocomplex was low to −55.0 dB at 16.2 GHz with a thickness of 1.49 mm, and the effective absorption bandwidth (EAB) was high to 5.95 GHz (12.05–18 GHz) at a thickness of 1.8 mm. The mixed-metal nanocomplex with the core–shell structure exhibited outstanding MA performance, corresponding to the synergetic effect of the magnetic and dielectric loss. It provides a high efficiency strategy for rendering low reflection loss and broad EAB to high-performance MAMs.

To generate green hydrogen by water electrolysis, it is vital to develop highly efficient electrocatalysts for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER). The utilization of various 3d transition metal-based layered double hydroxides (LDHs), especially NiFe–LDH, has gained vast attention for OER under alkaline conditions. However, the lack of a proper electronic structure of the NiFe–LDH and low stability under high-pH conditions limit its large-scale application. To overcome these difficulties, in this study, we constructed an Sn-doped NiFe–LDH material using a simple wet-chemical method. The doping of Sn will synergistically increase the active surface sites of NiFe–LDH. The highly active NiFe–LDH Sn 0 . 015(M) shows excellent OER activity by requiring an overpotential of 250 mV to drive 10 mA/cm 2 current density, whereas the bare NiFe–LDH required an overpotential of 295 mV at the same current density. Also, NiFe–LDH Sn 0 . 015(M) shows excellent long-term stability for 50 h in 1 M KOH and also exhibits a higher TOF value of 0.495 s –1, which is almost five times higher than that of…

Effective controllability over phases and compositions/components are demonstrated with feasibility for large-scale production through an exquisite alteration in reaction parameters especially pH for enhancing and understanding thermoelectric properties. Thermoelectric ZT reaches 0.8–1.1 at near-room-temperature for n-type Ag 2 Se and Cu + doping further improves to 0.9–1.2 over a temperature range of 300–393 K, which is the largest compared to that reported by wet chemistry methods. This improvement is related to the enhanced electrical conductivity and the suppressed thermal conductivity due to the incorporation of Cu + into the lattice of Ag 2 Se at very low concentrations ( x %Cu +:Ag 2 Se, x = 1.0, 1.5, and 2.0).

However, individual drugs hardly achieve precise controlled release and targeted therapy, thus resulting in unavoidable side effects. Fortunately, the emergence of drug carriers is expected to solve the above problems. In this work, the MOF-on-MOF strategy was adopted to encapsulate DOX into double-layer NH 2 -MIL-88B to fabricate a core–shell-structured DOX@NH 2 -MIL-88B-On-NH 2 -MIL-88B (DMM) and then realize the pH and GSH dual-responsive controlled DOX release. Because of the core–shell structure, the drug-loading capacity of DMM reached 14.4 wt %, which was nearly twice that of DOX@NH 2 -MIL-88B (DM), and the controlled release performance of DMM was also improved at the same time, greatly improving the kinetics equilibrium time of DOX from 2 h (DM) to 16 h (DMM) at pH 5.0. Moreover, we found that DMM also possessed peroxidase-like catalytic activity under acidic conditions, which could catalyze H 2 O 2 to produce • OH, exhibiting the potential chemodynamical treatment of cancer. Reducing soluble hexavalent uranium [U(VI)] to relatively nonimmigrated tetravalent uranium [U(IV)] by photocatalytic technologies is recognized as a highly promising strategy for avoiding environmental pollution and re-extracting uranium resources from nuclear wastewater. Computational results show that the catalytically active species 1 ( 4 [Co II (H 4 L)] 0 ) is formed by a four-electron-four-proton reduction of the initial catalyst CoPc-NH 2 . Multicolor-emission-based single-phase white light derived from different luminescence centers is an effective way to manipulate the optical properties of halide perovskites. In this work, we developed a codoping strategy to incorporate Bi 3+ and Te 4+ emission centers into all-inorganic lead-free Cs 2 HfCl 6 perovskite by a hydrothermal method. The as-prepared Bi 3+ /Te 4+ -doped Cs 2 HfCl 6 microcrystals show bright blue (Bi 3+ ), yellow (Te 4+ ), and warm-white emissions (Bi 3+ /Te 4+ ), respectively. The broad efficient dual emission in Bi 3+ /Te 4+ co-doped Cs 2 HfCl 6 is assigned to the typical 3 P 1 → 1 S 0 transition emission from Bi 3+ originating from [Bi Hf + V Cl ] and self-trapped excitons (STEs) from Te 4+ . Moreover, the concentration-optimized Cs 2 HfCl 6:Te 4+ shows excellent antiwater stability and high photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) of ∼70%. Meanwhile, a white light-emitting diode (WLED) fabricated using Bi 3+ /Te 4+ co-doped Cs 2 HfCl 6 is close to warm white with a color rendering index (CRI) of 75.4, CIE color coordinate of (0.370, 0.393), and a…

In recent years, molecular perovskite energetic materials have attracted more attention because of their simple synthesis processes, high thermal stabilities, excellent performances, and great significance as a design platform for energetic materials. To explore the possibility of the application of molecular perovskite energetic materials in heat-resistant explosives, four silver(I)-based molecular perovskite energetic compounds, (H 2 A)[Ag(ClO 4 ) 3 ], where H 2 A = piperazine-1,4-diium (H 2 pz 2+ ) for PAP-5, 1-methyl-piperazine-1,4-diium (H 2 mpz 2+ ) for PAP-M5, homopiperazine-1,4-diium (H 2 hpz 2+ ) for PAP-H5, and 1,4-diazabicyclo[2.2.2]octane-1,4-diium (H 2 dabco 2+ ) for DAP-5, were synthesized by a one-pot self-assembly strategy and structurally characterized. The single-crystal structures indicated that PAP-5, PAP-M5, and DAP-5 possess cubic perovskite structures while PAP-H5 possesses a hexagonal perovskite structure. Differential thermal analyses showed that their onset decomposition temperatures are >308.3 °C. For PAP-5 and DAP-5, they have not only exceptional…

Os(II) complexes showing singlet-to-triplet absorption are of growing interest as a new class of triplet sensitizers that circumvent energy loss during intersystem crossing, and they enable effective utilization of input photon energy in various applications, such as photoredox catalysis, photodynamic therapy, and photon upconversion. However, triplet excited-state lifetimes of Os(II) complexes are often too short (τ < 1 μs) to transfer their energy to neighboring molecules. While the covalent conjugation of chromophores has been known to extend the net excited-state lifetimes through an intramolecular triplet energy transfer (IMET), heavy-atom effects of the central metals on the attached chromophore units have rarely been discussed. Here, we investigate the relationship between the spin-density contribution of the heavy metals and the net triplet excited-state lifetimes for a series of Os(II) and Ru(II) bis(terpyridine) complexes modified with perylene units. Phosphorescence lifetimes of these compounds strongly depend on the lifetimes of the perylenyl group-localized excited…

Multicomponent metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have received an increasing amount of attention due to their potential to produce new topologies, pore metrics, and functionalities compared to MOFs with a single metal cluster and one organic linker. Herein, five isoreticular Zn MOFs were obtained by mixing two types of linear ditopic linkers in a one-pot solvothermal synthesis. Interestingly, in the resulting Zn MOFs a six-connected cyclic trinuclear Zn(II) cluster and an eight-connected linear trinuclear Zn(II) cluster coexist, leading to an uncommon (6,8)-connected network. Catalytic activities toward the solvent-free Knoevenagel reactions were observed for all of these MOFs. Further experimental and computational studies suggest that they are Brønsted acid-base bifunctional catalysts. Through chemical modifications of dicarboxylate ligands, including their aromatic backbones and substituents, we have successfully implemented reticular chemistry for the modulations of pore sizes, surface areas, and catalytic performances in a series of four-component isoreticular MOFs.

How to accurately detect and efficiently sweep Cr(VI) from contaminated water has come into focus. Zirconium-based metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) play vital roles in water environmental chemistry due to excellent hydrolysis-resistant stability. However, as photochemical probes and photocatalysts, poor performances in detection sensitivity, selectivity, and photosensitiveness limit sole Zr-MOFs’ applications. So, it is urgent to quest valid strategies to break through the dilemmas. Embedding luminous dyes into MOFs has been considered one of the most feasible avenues. Herein, a dual-emissive RhB@Zr-MOF with orange-yellow fluorescence has been assembled by in situ-encapsulating rhodamine B (RhB) into a zirconium–biquinoline-based MOF. Notably, RhB@Zr-MOF exhibits a rapid fluorescence quenching response toward Cr(VI) ions with high selectivity, sensitivity, and anti-interference abilities. In this study, we report a three-dimensional structure of a ZnIn 2 S 4 /Au/CdS composite photocatalyst for the CO 2 reduction reaction, where Au nanoparticles (NPs) are evenly anchored on the surface of ZnIn 2 S 4 by photodeposition and Au NPs are wrapped around by CdS. Herein, a pH-stable three-dimensional (3D) metal–organic framework (MOF), IITKGP-25, possessing exposed functional sites is presented, which facilitates such separations with excellent ideal adsorbed solution theory (IAST) selectivity (4.61 for C 2 H 2 /C 2 H 4 and 3.93 for C 2 H 2 /CO 2 ) under ambient conditions (295 K, 100 kPa, 50:50 gas mixtures) and a moderate affinity toward C 2 H 2 (26.6 kJ mol –1 ). The development of clean energy is one of the effective strategies to solve carbon peak and carbon neutrality. The severe recombination of photogenerated carriers is one of the fundamental reasons that hinder the development of photocatalysis. In this work, NiCo-MOF/ZIF was obtained by the “ZIF on MOF” strategy for the first time, and a stable bonding state of surface P(δ – )–Co/Ni(δ + )–O(δ – ) was formed on the surface of the catalyst by a one-step oxidation-phosphorus doping strategy. The X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy technique proves that phosphorus doping forms a unique bonding state on the surface of CoO–NiO. The novel surface bonding state can effectively inhibit the recombination of photogenerated carriers and can increase the migration rate of photogenerated electrons, which accelerates the process of photocatalytic hydrogen evolution. Photocatalytic hydrogen evolution kinetics verifies that the formation of P(δ – )–Co/Ni(δ + )–O(δ – ) bonding states can accelerate the process of photocatalytic hydrogen evolution, and the durability of the catalyst is verified by cycling…

The tetravalent-state stability of manganese is of primary importance for Mn 4+ luminescence. Double perovskite-structured A 2 B′B″O 6:Mn 4+ has been recently prevalent, and the manganese ions are assumed to substitute for the B″(IV–VI)O 6 site to stabilize at the tetravalent charge state to generate far-red emissions. However, some Mn-doped A 2 B′B″O 6 -type materials show no or weak luminescence such as typical Ca 2 MgWO 6:Mn. In this work, a cation-pair co-substitution strategy is proposed to replace 2Ca 2+ by Na + –La 3+ to form Ca 2–2 x Na x La x MgWO 6:Mn. The significant structural distortion appears in the solid solution lattices with the contraction of [MgO 6 ] but enlargement of [WO 6 ] octahedron. We hypothesize that the site occupancy preference of Mn migrates from Mg 2+ to W 6+ sites. As a result, the effective Mn 4+ /Mn 2+ concentration enhances remarkably to regulate nonluminescence to highly efficient Mn 4+ -related far-red emission.
