A Quantitative Scale of Oxophilicity and Thiophilicity

    Kasper P. Kepp

    615 citationsdoi:10.1021/acs.inorgchem.6b01702OpenAlex

    Show abstract

Oxophilicity and thiophilicity are widely used concepts with no quantitative definition. In this paper, a simple, generic scale is developed that solves issues with reference states and system dependencies and captures empirically known tendencies toward oxygen. This enables a detailed analysis of the fundamental causes of oxophilicity. Notably, the notion that oxophilicity relates to Lewis acid hardness is invalid. Rather, oxophilicity correlates only modestly and inversely with absolute hardness and more strongly with electronegativity and effective nuclear charge. Since oxygen is highly electronegative, ionic bonding is stronger to metals of low electronegativity. Left-side d-block elements with low effective nuclear charges and electronegativities are thus highly oxophilic, and the f-block elements, not because of their hardness, which is normal, but as a result of the small ionization energies of their outermost valence electrons, can easily transfer electrons to fulfill the electron demands of oxygen. Consistent with empirical experience, the most oxophilic elements are found…

Despite their extremely good performance in solar cells with efficiencies approaching 20% and the emerging application for light-emitting devices, organic-inorganic lead halide perovskites suffer from high content of toxic, polluting, and bioaccumulative Pb, which may eventually hamper their commercialization. Here, we present the synthesis of two-dimensional (2D) Cu-based hybrid perovskites and study their optoelectronic properties to investigate their potential application in solar cells and light-emitting devices, providing a new environmental-friendly alternative to Pb. The series (CH3NH3)2CuCl(x)Br(4-x) was studied in detail, with the role of Cl found to be essential for stabilization. By exploiting the additional Cu d-d transitions and appropriately tuning the Br/Cl ratio, which affects ligand-to-metal charge transfer transitions, the optical absorption in this series of compounds can be extended to the near-infrared for optimal spectral overlap with the solar irradiance. In situ formation of Cu(+) ions was found to be responsible for the green photoluminescence of this…

A new luminescent terbium-metal-organic framework [Tb3(L)2(HCOO)(H2O)5]·DMF·4H2O (1) (H4L = 4,4'-(pyridine-3,5-diyl)diisophthalic acid) has been successfully assembled by Tb(3+) ions and an undeveloped pyridyl-tetracarboxylate. Compound 1 exhibits a 3D porous (3,8)-connected (4.5(2))2(4(2).5(12).6(6).7(5).8(3)) topological framework with fascinating 1D open hydrophilic channels decorated by uncoordinated Lewis basic pyridyl nitrogen atoms. In particular, the Tb-MOF (1) can detect Cu(2+) ions with high selectivity and sensitivity, and its luminescence is nearly entirely quenched in N,N-dimethylformamide (DMF) solution and biological system. In addition, 1 still has high detection for the trace content of nitromethane with 70 ppm, which suggests that 1 is a promising example of dual functional materials with sensing copper ions and nitromethane.

    Strategies toward High-Temperature Lanthanide-Based Single-Molecule Magnets

Lanthanide-based single-molecule magnets are leading materials for achieving magnetization blocking at the level of one molecule. In this paper, we examine the physical requirements for efficient magnetization blocking in single-ion complexes and identify the design principles for achieving very high magnetization blocking barriers in lanthanide-based compounds. The key condition is the preponderant covalent binding of the Ln ion to one of the ligand atoms, tremendously enhancing the axial crystal field. We also make an overview of practical schemes for the implementation of this principle. These are (1) the effective lowering of the coordination number via displacement of the Ln ion to one of the atoms in the coordination polyhedron, (2) the design of two-coordinated complexes, and (3) the stabilization of diatomic compounds in cages and on surfaces. The last proposal is appealing in connection to spintronics applications, especially via the exploration of robust and highly anisotropic [LnX] units displaying multilevel blocking barriers of thousands of Kelvin and prospects for…

The impressive rise in efficiencies of solar cells employing the three-dimensional (3D) lead–iodide perovskite absorbers APbI 3 (A = monovalent cation) has generated intense excitement. Although these perovskites have remarkable properties as solar-cell absorbers, their potential commercialization now requires a greater focus on the materials’ inherent shortcomings and environmental impact. This creates a challenge and an opportunity for synthetic chemists to address these issues through the design of new materials. Synthetic chemistry offers powerful tools for manipulating the magnificent flexibility of the perovskite lattice to expand the number of functional analogues to APbI 3 . To highlight improvements that should be targeted in new materials, here we discuss the intrinsic instability and toxicity of 3D lead–halide perovskites. We consider possible sources of these instabilities and propose methods to overcome them through synthetic design. We also discuss new materials developed for realizing the exceptional photophysical properties of lead–halide perovskites in more…

The luminescent investigations show that 1-Eu is an excellent MOF-based fluorescent probe, with high sensitivity, selectivity, and simple regeneration, for environmentally relevant Fe(3+) and Cr2O7(2-) ions. 1-Eu also presents highly selective capture for CO2 over N2 and CH4 due to the multiple binding sites for CO2 molecules, which were supported by Grand Canonical Monte Carlo (GCMC) simulations.

The present study deals with the structural characterization and classification of the novel compounds 1 – 8 into perovskite subclasses and proceeds in extracting the structure–band gap relationships between them. The compounds were obtained from the employment of small, 3–5-atom-wide organic ammonium ions seeking to discover new perovskite-like compounds. The compounds reported here adopt unique or rare structure types akin to the prototype structure perovskite. When trimethylammonium (TMA) was employed, we obtained TMASnI 3 ( 1 ), which is our reference compound for a “perovskitoid” structure of face-sharing octahedra. The compounds EASnI 3 ( 2b ), GASnI 3 ( 3a ), ACASnI 3 ( 4 ), and IMSnI 3 ( 5 ) obtained from the use of ethylammonium (EA), guanidinium (GA), acetamidinium (ACA), and imidazolium (IM) cations, respectively, represent the first entries of the so-called “hexagonal perovskite polytypes” in the hybrid halide perovskite library. The hexagonal perovskites define a new family of hybrid halide perovskites with a crystal structure that emerges from a blend of corner- and…

The crystal structure and ferroelectric properties of ε-Ga 2 O 3 deposited by low-temperature MOCVD on (0001)-sapphire were investigated by single-crystal X-ray diffraction and the dynamic hysteresis measurement technique. A thorough investigation of this relatively unknown polymorph of Ga 2 O 3 showed that it is composed of layers of both octahedrally and tetrahedrally coordinated Ga 3+ sites, which appear to be occupied with a 66% probability. The refinement of the crystal structure in the noncentrosymmetric space group P 6 3 mc pointed out the presence of uncompensated electrical dipoles suggesting ferroelectric properties, which were finally demonstrated by independent measurements of the ferroelectric hysteresis. A clear epitaxial relation is observed with respect to the c -oriented sapphire substrate, with the Ga 2 O 3 [10–10] direction being parallel to the Al 2 O 3 direction [11–20], yielding a lattice mismatch of about 4.1%.

Single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis reveals that NNU-1 displays a twofold interpenetrating three-dimensional (3D) framework with a {4 24 ·6 4 }- bcu topology. Interestingly, the 3D framework contains a two-dimensional (2D) layered structure that consists of alternating left- and right-handed double helical chains. On the basis of the hydrophobic −CF 3 groups from H 2 hfipbb ligand, NNU-1 possesses excellent stability in water. It is worth noting that NNU-1 not only shows a highly selective fluorescence quenching effect to Fe 3+ ion in aqueous solution but also resists the interference of other metals including Fe 2+ ion. Accordingly, NNU-1 probably functions as a potential promising fluorescence sensor for detecting Fe 3+ ion with high sensitivity and selectivity.

Eu–HODA features rare chiral helical channels despite the achiral nature of H 4 ODA. It is found that this MOF shows a unique luminescent response to methanol, in contrast to n -propanol and ethanol. Eu–HODA reveals a turn-off luminescence switching initiated by acetone molecules with an EC 50 of 0.03 vol %, which is below the occupational exposure limit of acetone stipulated by the American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists. Furthermore, it also exhibits high sensitivity (Stern–Volmer constant K SV = 2.09 × 10 4 L/mol) and low detection limit (6.4 ppb) for Fe 3+ ions in pure water because of the existence of uncoordinated carboxyl groups within open frameworks. Eu–HODA-based test paper provides a simple and reliable detection method for Fe 3+ in practical applications.

Compound 1 exhibits exceptional thermal and chemical stability, especially in water or acidic media. The activated 1 presents highly selective sorption of carbon dioxide (CO2) over dinitrogen. Interestingly, diffuse-reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy with a carbon monoxide probe molecule demonstrates that both Lewis and Brønsted acid sites are involved in compound 1. As a result, as a heterogeneous Lewis and Brønsted acid bifunctional catalyst, 1 possesses excellent activity and recyclability for chemical fixation of CO2 coupling with epoxides into cyclic carbonates under mild conditions. In addition, the mechanism for the CO2 cycloaddition reaction has also been discussed.

The noncovalent intermolecular interactions (π-π stacking, metallophilic bonding) of the cyclometalated complexes [Pt(NCN)L](+)X(-) (NCN = dipyridylbenzene, L = pyridine (1), acetonitrile (2)) are determined by the steric properties of the ancillary ligands L in the solid state and in solution, while the nature of the counterion X(-) (X(-) = PF6(-), ClO4(-), CF3SO3(-)) affects the molecular arrangement of 2·X in the crystal medium. According to the variable-temperature X-ray diffraction measurements, the extensive Pt···Pt interactions and π-stacking in 2·X are significantly temperature-dependent. Recently, there has been growing interest in hafnium (Hf) metal-organic frameworks (MOFs). These MOFs may perform better as gas adsorbents than zirconium (Zr) MOFs due to the presence of Brønsted acid sites with high affinity toward adsorbates, together with the outstanding chemical and hydrothermal stabilities similar to their Zr analogues. However, Hf-MOFs have been rarely reported due to the lack of effective synthetic methods. We herein report a modulated hydrothermal synthesis of UiO-66(Hf)-type MOFs. Among these MOFs, UiO-66(Hf)-(OH)2 possesses a very high CO2 gravimetric uptake of 1.81 mmol g(-1) at 0.15 bar and 298 K, which is 400% higher than that of UiO-66(Hf) (0.36 mmol g(-1)). It also exhibits a record-high volumetric CO2 uptake of 167 v/v at 1 bar and 298 K. Ideal adsorbed solution theory calculations showed a CO2/N2 (molar ratio 15:85) selectivity of 93 and CO2/H2 (molar ratio 30:70) selectivity above 1700. Breakthrough simulations also confirmed its optimal CO2 separation attribute. Our results have demonstrated for the first time the strong potential of Hf-MOFs for…

The efficient removal of pertechnetate (TcO4(-)) anions from liquid waste or melter off-gas solution for an alternative treatment is one of the promising options to manage (99)Tc in legacy nuclear waste. Safe immobilization of (99)Tc is of major importance because of its long half-life (t1/2 = 2.13 × 10(5) yrs) and environmental mobility. Different types of inorganic and solid-state ion-exchange materials have been shown to absorb TcO4(-) anions from water. However, both high capacity and selectivity have yet to be achieved in a single material. Herein, we show that a protonated version of an ultrastable zirconium-based metal-organic framework can adsorb perrhenate (ReO4(-)) anions, a nonradioactive surrogate for TcO4(-), from water even in the presence of other common anions. Synchrotron-based powder X-ray diffraction and molecular simulations were used to identify the position of the adsorbed ReO4(-) (surrogate for TcO4(-)) molecule within the framework.

    Show abstract

Iron complexes are important spin crossover (SCO) systems with vital roles in oxidative metabolism and promising technological potential. The SCO tendency depends on the free energy balance of high- and low-spin states, which again depends on physical effects such as dispersion, relativistic effects, and vibrational entropy. This work studied 30 different iron SCO systems with experimentally known thermochemical data, using 12 different density functionals. Remarkably general entropy-enthalpy compensation across SCO systems was identified (R = 0.82, p = 0.002) that should be considered in rational SCO design. Iron(II) complexes displayed higher ΔH and ΔS values than iron(III) complexes and also less steep compensation effects. First-coordination sphere ΔS values computed from numerical frequencies reproduce most of the experimental entropy and should thus be included when modeling spin-state changes in inorganic chemistry (R = 0.52, p = 3.4 × 10(-3); standard error in TΔS ≈ 4.4 kJ/mol at 298 K vs 16 kJ/mol of total TΔS on average). Three isostructural Ln-BTB frameworks (Ln = Eu (1), Dy (2), Yb (3)) were synthesized and structurally characterized, in which mononuclear and trinuclear [Ln3] units as nodes construct unprecedented (3,4,10)-connected 3D frameworks with (4·6·8)4(4·8(2))2(4·8(5))(6(2)·8(4))(4(5)·6(8)·8(26)·10(6)) point symbol. The luminescent investigations revealed that compound 1 can sensitively and selectively detect Al(3+), but comparably compound 2 could not detect Al(3+) among various cations. More importantly, 1 as an Al(3+) sensor can be reused at least five times, which represents the first recyclable metal organic framework (MOF)-supported Al(3+) sensor. Additionally, magnetic investigations on 2 also were carried out, showing a single-molecule-magnet behavior.

In this report, the issue related to nanoparticle (NP) agglomeration upon increasing their loading amount into metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) has been addressed by functionalization of MOFs with alkyne groups. The alkynophilicity of the Pd(2+) (or other noble metals) ions has been utilized successfully for significant loading of Pd NPs into alkyne functionalized MOFs. It has been shown here that the size and loading amount of Pd NPs are highly dependent on the surface area and pore width of the MOFs. The loading amount of Pd NPs was increased monotonically without altering their size distribution on a particular MOF. Importantly, the distinct role of alkyne groups for Pd(2+) stabilization has also been demonstrated by performing a control experiment considering a MOF without an alkyne moiety. The preparation of NPs involved two distinct steps viz. adsorption of metal ions inside MOFs and reduction of metal ions. Both of these steps were monitored by microscopic techniques. This report also demonstrates the applicability of Pd@MOF NPs as extremely efficient heterogeneous catalysts…

. The electronic structure, determined from density functional theory calculations, shows the top of the valence band and bottom of the conduction band minima are, unusually, dominated by Bi s and p states, respectively. This produces a sharp exciton peak in the absorption spectra with a binding energy that was approximated to be 940 meV, which is substantially stronger than values found in other halide perovskites and, instead, more closely reflects values seen in alkali halide crystals. This large binding energy is indicative of a strongly localized character and results in a highly structured emission at room temperature as the exciton couples to vibrations in the lattice.

The structure and properties of two new UiO-67-type metal-organic frameworks, along with their linker synthesis and powder and single crystal synthesis, are presented. The new MOFs, UiO-67-Me and UiO-67-BN, are based on 3,3'-dimethylbiphenyl and 1,1'-binaphthyl linker scaffolds, and show a much higher stability to water than the thoroughly investigated UiO-67, which is based on the biphenyl scaffold. On the basis of structure models obtained from single crystal X-ray diffraction, it is seen that these linkers are partly shielding the Zr cluster. The new materials have higher density than UiO-67, but show a higher volumetric adsorption capacity for methane. UiO-67-BN exhibits excellent reversible water sorption properties, and enhanced stability to aqueous solutions over a wide pH range; it is to the best of our knowledge the most stable Zr-MOF that is isostructural to UiO-67 in aqueous solutions.

A novel three-dimensional lanthanide–organic framework {[Eu(BTB)(phen)]·4.5DMF·2H 2 O} n ( 1 ) has been synthesized. Structural characterization suggests that framework 1 possesses one-dimensional channels with potential pore volume, and the large channels in the framework can capture CO 2 . Interestingly, investigations on the cycloaddition reaction of CO 2 and epoxides reveal that compound 1 can be considered as an efficient catalyst for CO 2 fixation with epoxides under 1 atm pressure. Importantly, 1 can be reused at least five times without any obvious loss in catalytic activity. Furthermore, the luminescent explorations of 1 reveal that 1 can act as a recyclable sensor of Al 3+, and the corresponding detection limit can reach 5 × 10 –8 M (1.35 ppb), which is obviously lower than the United States Environmental Protection Agency’s recommended level of Al 3+ in drinking water (200 ppb). These results show that 1 has a level of sensitivity higher than that of other reported MOF-based sensors of Al 3+ .

Prussian blue and its related compounds are formed by cheap and abundant metals and have shown their importance in the generation of new fuels by renewable sources. To optimize these compounds it is important to understand their electronic structure and thus establish robust structure-activity relationships. To this end, we employed theoretical simulations based on density functional theory, employing functionals of different degree of complexity, including pure generalized gradient approximation (GGA) and GGA+U functionals, which introduce self-interaction correction terms through the Hubbard parameter, and compared those to the hybrid functionals HSE03 and HSE06. With this robust setup, we can identify an appropriate computational scheme that provides the best compromise between computational demand and accuracy. A complete database considering Berlin green and Prussian blue and white for all alkaline cations is presented.

Owing to the combined features of high porosity, moderate pore sizes, and immobilized Lewis basic nitrogen sites, the activated ZJU-40a exhibits the second-highest gravimetric C2H2 uptake of 216 cm(3) g(-1) (at 298 K and 1 bar) among all of the reported MOFs so far. This value is not only much higher than that of the isoreticular NOTT-101a (184 cm(3) g(-1)), but also superior to those of two very promising MOFs, known as HKUST-1 (201 cm(3) g(-1)) and Co-MOF-74 (197 cm(3) g(-1)). Regularities among electronic configurations for common oxidation states in lanthanide complexes and the low involvement of f orbitals in bonding result in the appearance of several periodic trends along the lanthanide series. These trends can be observed on relatively different properties, such as bonding distances or ionization potentials. Well-known concepts like the lanthanide contraction, the double-double (tetrad) effect, and the similar chemistry along the lanthanide series stem from these regularities. Periodic trends on structural and spectroscopic properties are examined through complete active space self-consistent field (CASSCF) followed by second-order N-electron valence perturbation theory (NEVPT2) including both scalar relativistic and spin-orbit coupling effects. Energies and wave functions from electronic structure calculations are further analyzed in terms of ab initio ligand field theory (AILFT), which allows one to rigorously extract angular overlap model ligand field, Racah, and spin-orbit coupling parameters directly from high-level ab initio calculations. We report a two-dimensional Hofmann-like spin-crossover (SCO) material, [Fe(trz-py) 2 {Pt(CN) 4 }]·3H 2 O, built from [FePt(CN) 4 ] layers separated by interdigitated 4-(2-pyridyl)-1,2,4,4 H -triazole (trz-py) ligands with two symmetrically inequivalent Fe II sites. This compound exhibits an incomplete first-order spin transition at 153 K between fully high-spin (HS–HS) and intermediate high-spin low-spin (HS–LS) ordered states. At low temperature, it undergoes a bidirectional photoswitching to HS–HS and fully low-spin (LS–LS) states with green and near-IR light irradiation, respectively, with associated T(LIESST = Light-Induced Excited Spin-State Trapping) and T(reverse-LIESST) values of 52 and 85 K, respectively. Photomagnetic investigations show that the reverse-LIESST process, performed from either HS-HS or HS-LS states, enables access to a hidden stable LS-LS state, revealing the existence of a hidden thermal hysteresis. Crystallographic investigations allowed to identify that the strong metastability of the HS-LS state originates from the existence of a strong elastic…

The reactions between the tetra-n-butylammonium salt of [{Mo6I8}I6](2-) and silver carboxylates RCOOAg (R = CH3 (1), C(CH3)3 (2), α-C4H3O (3), C6H5 (4), α-C10H7 (5), or C2F5 (6)) in CH2Cl2 afforded new carboxylate complexes [{Mo6I8}(RCOO)6](2-). The complexes were characterized by X-ray single-crystal diffraction and elemental analysis, cyclic/differential pulse voltammetry, and IR, NMR, and UV-visible spectroscopies. The emission properties of the complexes 1-6, and those of the earlier reported complexes with R = CF3 (7) and n-C3F7 (8), were studied both in acetonitrile solution and in the solid state. In deaerated CH3CN at 298 K, all of the complexes 1-8 exhibit intense and long-lived emission with the quantum yield and lifetime being 0.48-0.73 and 283-359 μs, respectively. The oxidation (Eox)/reduction (Ered) potentials of the complexes correlate linearly with the pKa value of the terminal carboxylate ligands L = RCOO (pKa(L)). Reflecting the pKa(L) dependences of Eox/Ered, the emission energy (νem) of the complexes was also shown to correlate with pKa(L). The present study…

The CsSnI 3 perovskite and the corresponding SnF 2 -containing material with nominal composition CsSnI 2.95 F 0.05 were synthesized by solid-state reactions and structurally characterized by powder X-ray diffraction. Both materials undergo rapid phase transformation upon exposure to air from the black orthorhombic phase (B-γ-CsSnI 3 ) to the yellow orthorhombic phase (Y-CsSnI 3 ), followed by irreversible oxidation into Cs 2 SnI 6 within several hours. The phase transition occurs at a significantly lower rate in the SnF 2 -containing material rather than in the pure perovskite. The high hole-carrier concentration of the materials prohibits the detection of Raman signals for B-γ-CsSnI 3 and induces a very strong plasmonic reflectance in the far-IR. In contrast, far-IR phonon bands and a rich Raman spectrum are observed for the Y-CsSnI 3 modification below 140 cm –1 with weak frequency shift gradients versus temperatures between −95 and +170 °C. Above 170 °C, the signal is lost due to B-α-CsSnI 3 re-formation. The photoluminescence spectra exhibit residual blue shifts and broadening…

Herein we report a robust primitive cubic (pcu)-topology metal-metalloporphyrin framework (MMPF), MMPF-18, which was constructed from a ubiquitous secondary building unit of a tetranuclear zinc cluster, Zn4(μ4-O)(-COO)6, and a linear organic linker of 5,15-bis(4-carboxyphenyl)porphyrin (H2bcpp). The strong π-π stacking from porphyrins and the lengthy H2bcpp ligand affords a 4-fold-interpenetrating network along with reduced void spaces and confined narrow channels. Thereby, MMPF-18 presents segmented pores and high-density metalloporphyrin centers for selective CO2 uptake over CH4 and size-selective chemical transformation of CO2 with epoxides forming cyclic carbonates under ambient conditions.

Two luminescent Cd(II) metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) were prepared from electron-rich π-conjugated fluorescent ligands. They are isostructural with sql nets. Their strong luminescences can be quenched by a series of nitroaromatic explosives. Notably, MOF 1 shows highly selective and sensitive detection of 4-nitrophenol (4-NP), while MOF 2 exhibits good responses toward picric acid (PA) compared with other nitroaromatic explosives. This different order of quenching efficiency is because there are H-bonding interactions between MOF 1 and 4-NP, while MOF 2 lacks these H-bonding interactions. MOF 1 displays highly selective and sensitive detection of 4-NP with the high quenching constant (6.74× 10 4 M –1 ) and low detection limit (34.48 ppb), which is better than those of known MOFs. MOF 1 and MOF 2 have highly sensitive and selective detection of 4-NP and PA in the practical application, respectively.

An Ir(III) complex with 1-phenylisoquinoline (piq) ligands [Ir(piq)2(dmb)](+) (Ir, dmb = 4,4'-dimethyl-2,2'-bipyridine) exhibited strong absorption in the visible region, and the lifetime of its excited state was very long (τ = 2.8 μs). Photochemical reduction of Ir efficiently proceeded with 1-benzyl-1,4-dihydronicotinamide (BNAH) and 1,3-dimethyl-2-phenyl-2,3-dihydro-1H-benzo[d]imidazole (BIH) as reductants, giving the one-electron-reduced species (OERS), which was stable in solution at ambient temperature. The OERS of the Ir complex possessed strong reductive power, sufficient to supply an electron to fac-Re(dmb)(CO)3Br (Re). The photocatalytic reduction of CO2 proceeded efficiently using a mixed system constructed with Ir as a redox photosensitizer and Re as a catalyst, selectively giving CO (ΦCO = 0.16 using BNAH at λex = 480 nm). Ir was a more suitable photosensitizer for evaluating the activity of the Re catalyst in the photocatalytic reaction compared to [Ru(dmb)3](2+) (Ru) because the Ir complex was more stable in the photocatalytic reaction, and its decomposition products…
