)-H/N-H cross-dehydrogenative coupling (CDC)-amination with both primary and secondary aliphatic amines at room temperature in air is developed. This photocatalytic reaction allows the direct formation of 3-aminoquinoxalin-2(1 H)-ones via CDC-amination in the absence of any external oxidant added from outside. Preliminary mechanistic studies reveal that the present reaction proceeds through a radical process.

An efficient synthesis of cyanoalkylated heteroarenes via iron-catalyzed direct C-H cyanoalkylation of heteroarenes has been developed. Structurally diverse cyanoalkyl motifs generated through C-C bond cleavage of cyclobutanone oxime esters have been introduced into quinoxalin-2(1H)-ones, flavone, benzothiazoles, and caffeine in good to excellent yields. Remarkably, less-strained cyclopentanone and unstrained cyclohexanone oxime esters were also amenable substrates in this cyanoalkylation reaction.

in combination with 4,5-bis(diphenylphosphino)-9,9-dimethylxanthene (Xantphos) under irradiation of blue LEDs efficiently catalyzes a decarboxylative Heck reaction of vinyl arenes and vinyl heteroarenes with aliphatic N-(acyloxy)phthalimides at room temperature. A broad scope of secondary, tertiary, and quaternary carboxylates, including α-amino acid derived esters, can be applied as amenable substrates with high stereoselectivity. The experimental observation was explained by excitation-state reactivity of the palladium complex under irradiation to induce single-electron transfer to activate N-(acyloxy)phthalimides, and to suppress undesired β-hydride elimination of alkyl palladium intermediates.

A visible-light-initiated α-perfluoroalkyl-β-heteroarylation of various alkenes with perfluoroalkyl iodides and quinoxalin-2(1 H)-ones is presented. This three-component radical cascade reaction allows an efficient synthesis of a range of perfluoroalkyl containing quinoxalin-2(1 H)-one derivatives in moderate to excellent yields under mild conditions. Reactions proceed via acidic aminyl radicals that are readily deprotonated to give the corresponding radical anions able to sustain the radical chain as single electron transfer reducing reagents. Hence, the overall cascade classifies as an electron-catalyzed process.

Abstract An electrochemically driven, nickel-catalyzed reductive coupling of N-hydroxyphthalimide esters with aryl halides is reported. The reaction proceeds under mild conditions in a divided electrochemical cell and employs a tertiary amine as the reductant. This decarboxylative C(sp3)–C(sp2) bond-forming transformation exhibits excellent substrate generality and functional group compatibility. An operationally simple continuous-flow version of this transformation using a commercial electrochemical flow reactor represents a robust and scalable synthesis of value added coupling process.

The efficient Pd-catalyzed Heck reaction of diverse tertiary alkyl halides with alkenes has been developed. Unactivated tertiary alkyl halides efficiently react at room temperature under visible light irradiation with no exogenous photosensitizers required. For activated tertiary alkyl halides, the same catalytic system works well without light. These methods offer a general access to electronically diverse alkenes possessing quaternary and functionalized tertiary allylic carbon centers. The substituents at these centers include alkyl-, carbalkoxy-, tosyl-, phosphonyl-, and boronate groups. It was also shown that the end-game mechanism of this transformation may vary depending on the type of the substrates used.

Enantioselective dearomative [3 + 2] cycloaddition reaction of 2-nitrobenzofurans with 3-isothiocyanato oxindoles was developed. The reaction employs a chiral bis(oxazoline)/Zn(OTf) 2 catalyst, allowing a practical, straightforward access to structurally diverse spirooxindoles containing a 2,3-dihydrobenzofuran motif and three contiguous stereocenters with excellent diastereo- and enantioselectivities. The synthetic potentials of the method have been demonstrated by the scale-up experiment and transformations of the products. The preliminary mechanism was investigated with experimental observations, nonlinear effects studies, and MS experiments.

A chemodivergent copper-catalyzed ring opening of cycloketone oximes via radical-mediated C-C bond cleavage under redox-neutral conditions is described. This method allows the divergent synthesis of γ- and δ-acyloxylated, alkoxylated, and hydroxylated nitriles while avoiding the use of toxic cyanide reagents. Moreover, these reactions proceed under very mild conditions with good functional group tolerance. Notably, ring-opening reactions of the less-strained substrate cyclopentanone oxime also proceeded well under the established conditions.

Donor-acceptor cyclopropanes were reacted under Lewis acid catalysis with 3-thioxocyclobutanones as surrogates for disubstituted thioketenes. A broad scope of 2-substituted tetrahydrothiophenes with a semicyclic double bond was obtained under mild conditions with high functional group tolerance and in excellent yield. A sequence of a formal [3 + 2]-cycloaddition followed by the subsequent release of disubstituted ketene is postulated as the mechanism.

A reductive cross-coupling of gem -difluoroalkenes with diverse unactivated and heteroatom substituted olefins through a Fe-catalyzed hydrogen atom transfer (HAT) strategy is reported. Different from the previous HAT-type olefin cross-coupling reactions, the presence of a fluorine atom in the molecule results in a stereoselective β-F cleavage, leading to a C(sp 2 )–C(sp 3 ) bond formation. A wide variety of alkylated monofluoroalkenes were obtained in good efficiency with excellent Z selectivity under air- and water-tolerant reaction conditions. A similar defluorinative coupling reaction of monofluoroalkenes was also realized.

We report a system with ethylene-bridged flavinium salt 2b which catalyzes the aerobic oxidation of toluenes and benzyl alcohols with high oxidation potential ( E ox > +2.5 V vs SCE) to give the corresponding benzoic acids under visible light irradiation. This is caused by the high oxidizing power of excited 2b ( E ( 2b* ) = +2.67 V vs SCE) involved in photooxidation and by the accompanying dark organocatalytic oxygenation provided by the in situ formed flavin hydroperoxide 2b-OOH .
