Many applications involve the phenomenon of a material absorbing electromagnetic radiation. By exploiting wave interference, the efficiency of absorption can be significantly enhanced. Here, we propose Friedrich-Wintgen bound states in the continuum (F-W BICs) based on borophene metamaterials to realize coherent perfect absorption with a dual-band absorption peak in commercially important communication bands. Metamaterials consist of borophene gratings and a borophene sheet that can simultaneously support a Fabry-Perot plasmon resonance and a guided plasmon mode. The formation and dynamic modulation of the F-W BIC can be achieved by adjusting the width or carrier density of the borophene grating, while the strong coupling leads to the anti-crossover behavior of the absorption spectrum. Due to the weak angular dispersion originating from the intrinsic flat-band characteristic of the deep sub-wavelength periodic structure, the proposed plasmonic system exhibits almost no change in wavelength and absorption at large incident angles (within 70 degrees). In addition, we employ the…

High-speed 3D measurement is receiving increasing attention. However, simultaneously achieving high computational efficiency, algorithmic robustness, and reconstructing ratio is challenging. Therefore, a dynamic phase-differencing profilometry (DPDP) is proposed. By capturing the minimum three phase-shifting sinusoidal deformed patterns and establishing a brand-new model, the phase difference between the object on the reference plane and the reference plane is directly resolved to effectively improve computational efficiency. Although it is wrapped, by using only two auxiliary complementary gratings with a purposely designed lower frequency, a DPDP-based number-theoretical temporal phase unwrapping (NT-TPU) algorithm is also proposed to unwrap the wrapped phase difference rather than the phase itself with high robustness. Furthermore, compared to existing PSP-based NT-TPU, the proposed NT-TPU can normally work under more relaxed restrictions. In order to accomplish a high reconstructing ratio, a pentabasic interleaved projection (PIP) strategy based on time division multiplexing is…

With the increasing demands for protecting privacy, multispectral camouflage devices using metasurface design in combination with mature detection technologies has become an effective way. However, this early design exposures challenging while implementing the multispectral camouflage on single metasurface with limited modes. For this reason, this paper proposes a dynamically tunable metasurface. The metasurface consists of Au (gold), Sb2Se3 (antimony selenide) and Al (aluminum) that enables radiative cooling, LiDAR (light detection and ranging) and infrared camouflage. In amorphous phase of Sb2Se3, the thermal radiation reduction rate of MWIR (mid wave infrared) is up to 98.2%. The echo signal reduction rate for 1064 nm LiDAR can reach 96.3%. In crystalline phase of Sb2Se3, the highest cooling power is 65.5 Wm-2. Moreover, the cooled metasurface can further reduce the surface temperature and achieve efficient infrared camouflage. This designed metasurface provides a new strategy for the device to be compatible with multispectral camouflage and radiative cooling.

    Show abstract

In this paper, a kind of plasma metastructures-photonic crystals (PMPC) structure is proposed to investigate the absorption and transmission properties of electromagnetic waves (EWs) incident from opposite directions. The results show that the PMPC can achieve a dual-channel asymmetric absorption-transmission (AAT) phenomenon. At an operating bandwidth (OB) of 2.15∼2.85 GHz, EWs are absorbed in the forward incidence and transmitted in the backward case, and a relative bandwidth (RB) with forward absorption above 0.9 is 28.0%. On the contrary, at an OB of 7.07∼7.67 GHz, EWs can be transmitted in the forward propagation and absorbed in the backward case with a RB of 8.1%. Moreover, the effects of parameters such as applied magnetic field, incident angle, and tilt angle on AAT performance are investigated separately. The proposed dual-channel tunable AAT will further extend the application of asymmetric devices in the fields of optical communication and optical transmission.

Unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) assisted wireless communications have been expected to play a vital role in the next generation of wireless networks. UAVs can serve as either repeaters or data collectors within the communication link, thereby potentially augmenting the efficacy of communication systems. Despite their promise, the channel analysis and modeling specific to terahertz (THz) wireless channels leveraging UAVs remain under-explored. This work delves into a ground-to-UAV channel at 140 GHz, with a specific focus on the influence of UAV hovering behavior on channel performance. Employing experimental measurements through an unmodulated channel setup and a geometry-based stochastic model (GBSM) that integrates three-dimensional positional coordinates and beamwidth, this work evaluates the impact of UAV dynamic movements and antenna orientation on channel performance. Our findings highlight the minimal impact of UAV orientation adjustments on channel performance and underscore the diminishing necessity for precise alignment between UAVs and ground stations as beamwidth increases.

This paper presents a simultaneous measurement light-induced thermoelectric spectroscopy (LITES) sensor with high sensitivity for detecting methane (CH 4 ), carbon monoxide (CO) and acetylene (C 2 H 2 ). It employs a multi-pass cell (MPC) with an overlapped spots pattern and low resonant frequency circle-head quartz tuning forks (QTFs) for the first time. The fiber-coupled MPC with an optical length (OPL) of 40 m was combined with a thin-film filter (TFF) to improve the laser absorption and enable light spots multiplexing on mirrors. Three self-designed circle-head QTFs with low resonant frequencies of less than 10 kHz and a quality factor of ∼ 11500 were adopted to improve the detection ability. The LITES sensor detected multi-gas signals based on their unique absorption spectrum, enabling real-simultaneous measurement of CH 4 , CO, and C 2 H 2 . After optimization, the minimum detection limits (MDLs) of 0.5 ppm, 126.9 ppm and 0.4 ppm for these gases were obtained, respectively. With integration times of 300 s for CH 4 and 200 s each for CO and C 2 H 2 , the MDLs could be further…

An optical pumping scheme is proposed for reducing the gradient of electron spin polarization and suppressing light source noise in a spin-exchange relaxation-free magnetometer. This is achieved by modulating only the phase of a narrow-linewidth pump light field with external Gaussian noise. Compared to the absence of phase modulation, the uniformity of electron spin polarization was improved by over 40%, and the light-frequency noise suppression ratio of the magnetometer was enhanced by 4.3 times. Additionally, the response of the magnetometer was increased by 54%, resulting in a sensitivity of 0.34 fT/Hz 1/2 at 30 Hz. The applicability of this scheme can extend to other optical pumping experiments involving large atom ensembles requiring uniform electron spin polarization distribution, which is beneficial for developing ultra-high sensitivity and high stability magnetometers essential for magneto-cardiography and magneto-encephalography research applications.

However, it is facing challenges in the measurement of objects with intricate structures and high dynamic range that involved in precision manufacturing and semiconductor packaging. In this paper, a multi-view fringe projection profilometry system, which deploys a vertical telecentric projector and four oblique tilt-shift cameras, is presented to address the “blind spots” caused by shadowing, occlusion and local specular reflection. A flexible and accurate system calibration method is proposed, in which the corrected pinhole imaging model is used to calibrate the telecentric projection, and the unified calibration is performed by bundle adjustment. Experimental results show that the 3D repeated measurement error and standard deviation are no more than 10 μ m within a measurable volume of 70 × 40 × 20 mm 3 . Furthermore, a group of experiments prove that the developed system can achieve complete and accurate 3D measurement for high dynamic range surfaces with complex structures.

However, owing to the noise of the wrapped phase, errors in wrap count prediction and phase calculation can occur, making it challenging to achieve high measurement accuracy under high-noise conditions. To address this issue, a three-stage multi-task phase unwrapping method was proposed. The phase retrieval was divided into three training stages: wrapped phase denoising, wrap count prediction, and unwrapped phase error compensation. In the first stage, a noise preprocessing module was trained to reduce noise interference, thereby improving the accuracy of the wrap count prediction and phase calculation. The second stage involved training the wrap count prediction module. A residual compensation module was added to correct the errors from the denoising results generated in the first stage. Finally, in the third stage, the phase error compensation module was trained to correct errors in the unwrapped phase calculated in the second stage. Additionally, a convolution-based multi-scale spatial attention module was proposed, which…

The challenges presented by the directly reflected field in optical feedback cavity-enhanced spectroscopy systems serve as substantial obstacles, introducing additional complexity to existing systems and compromising their sensitivity, as the underlying mechanisms of its adverse effects remain not fully understood. This study aims to address this issue by introducing a comprehensive analytical model. Additionally, frequency locking can be achieved by decreasing the feedback rate, the laser’s linewidth enhancement factor, and the directly reflected field, and by increasing the refractive index of the gain medium, the length of the laser’s resonant cavity, the electric field reflectivity of the laser’s output facet, and the resonant field. These parameters can affect the feedback coupling rate pre-factor, and for a resonant cavity with a length of 0.394 m, optical feedback can only be established when the feedback coupling rate pre-factor is less than 1.05 × 10 9 . Through experimental validation, we successfully confirm the effectiveness of the proposed solution in eliminating the…

    Show abstract

A surface plasmon resonance (SPR) sensor composed of photonic crystal fibers (PCFs) is designed for the detection of low-concentration liquids. The excellent sensing properties are attributed to the sensitivity enhancement at the dispersion turning point (DTP) of the surface plasmon polariton (SPP) modes. The sensor consists of two identical and structurally simple D-shaped PCFs together with a plasmonic thin film coated on the polished surface in direct contact with the analyte. Changes in the refractive index (RI) result in the splitting of the degenerate plasma peaks, thus allowing the monitoring of the analyte concentration variations by measuring the peak separation. In the RI range between 1.328 RIU and 1.33 RIU, the sensor exhibits an ultra-high sensitivity of 129,800 nm/RIU, which is 37.22 times higher than that of the unsensitized single D-shaped structure. Compared to fiber grating sensors operating in the vicinity of the cladding mode DTP, the spliced dual D-shaped PCF still has a predictably high mechanical strength. In addition, the RI detection range of the sensor can…

The discovery of bound states in the continuum (BIC) of optical nanostructures has garnered significant research interest and found widespread application in the field of optics, leading to an attractive approach to achieve high-Q (Quality factor) Fano resonance. Herein, an all-dielectric metasurface consisting of four gallium phosphide (Gap) cylinders on the MgF 2 substrate is designed and analyzed by the finite element method (FEM). By breaking the symmetry of the plane, specifically by moving the two cylinders to one side, it is possible to achieve a transition from the symmetry-protected BIC to quasi-BIC. This transition enables the excitation of sharp dual-band Fano resonance at wavelengths of 1,045.4 nm and 1,139.6 nm, with the maximum Q factors reaching 1.47 × 10 4 and 1.28 × 10 4 , respectively. Underwater wireless optical communication (UWOC) has demonstrated high-speed and low-latency properties in clear and coastal ocean water because of the relatively low attenuation 'window' for blue-green wavelengths from 450 nm to 550 nm. However, there are different attenuation coefficients for transmission in ocean water at different wavelengths, and the light transmission more seriously deteriorates with fluctuations in the water turbidity. Therefore, traditional UWOC using a single wavelength or coarse blue-green wavelengths has difficulty tolerating variations in water turbidity. Dense wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) technology provides sufficient communication channels with a narrow wavelength spacing and minimal channel crosstalk. The directional quantum squeezing results in a chiral photon interaction between the resonators and a frequency shift of the squeezed resonator mode with respect to the unsqueezed bare mode. We show that the directional quantum squeezing can modify the effective optomechanical coupling in the optomechanical resonator, and analyze the impacts of driving direction and squeezing extent on the phonon laser action in detail. Our analytical and numerical results indicate that the controllable nonreciprocal phonon laser action can be effectively realized in this system. In order to broaden the sensing bandwidth of surface plasmon resonance (SPR) sensors, we propose and demonstrate a dual-channel SPR fiber optic sensor with wide bandwidth. The sensor is fabricated using no-core fiber (NCF), in which the film consists of a silver film and a ZnO film. The sensing characteristics are investigated by simulation and experiment. The resonance wavelength range of the SPR sensor can be significantly tuned by varying the thickness of the ZnO film. In the experiments, a dual-channel SPR sensor that can be used for simultaneous detection of temperature and refractive index was realized by cascading ZnO/Ag film with Ag film. The experimental results show that the two sensing channels are independent without crosstalk. The sensitivity of this sensor is 3512 nm/RIU in the range of 1.333 ∼ 1.385 and 4.6 nm/°C in the range of 0 ∼ 60 °C, which is better than most of the current dual-channel SPR sensors. In addition, the experimental results show that this sensor has good stability in use. The sensor proposed in this work has the advantages of a wide operating…

At present, pesticides are widely used in the cultivation of crops. Glyphosate is widely used in many pesticides. Glyphosate ingestion can cause a series of health problems. Therefore, this paper proposes to use localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) technology to develop a WaveFlex biosensor (plasma wave-based optical fiber sensor) to detect glyphosate concentration in pesticides. The evanescent field is improved by using the fusion of seven-core fiber and single-mode fiber and the tapering of the sensing area to improve the sensing performance. The gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) are used to excite the LSPR effect. Multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) and cerium oxide nanorods (CeO 2 -NRs) are used to increase the surface area and promote the adhesion of the enzyme. The sensitivity of the sensor is 137.7 pm/µM in the range of 0-60 µM glyphosate concentration, and the limit of detection (LoD) is 1.94 µM, which has good performance in compared to the existing biosensors. This work presents a bulk refractive index sensor based on quasi-bound states in the continuum (BICs) induced by broken symmetries in metasurfaces. The symmetry is broken by detuning the size and position of silicon particles periodically arranged in an array, resulting in multiple quasi-BIC resonances. We investigate the sensing characteristics of each of the resonances by measuring the spectral shift in response to changes in the refractive index of the surrounding medium. In addition, we reveal the sensing range of the different resonances through simulations involving a layer of deviating refractive index of increasing thickness. Interestingly, the resonances show very different responses, which we describe via the analysis of the near-field. This work contributes to the development of highly sensitive and selective BIC-based sensors that can be used for a wide range of applications.

Chiral metasurfaces with strong chirality and high quality factors (Q-factors) have become essential components for achieving strong light-matter interactions and have a wide range of applications in chiral lasers, detectors, etc. However, current schemes primarily focus on enhancing the chiral response and Q-factor, with limited consideration of their modulability and flexibility. In this paper, we present a chiral a-Si metasurface that can support multiple symmetry-protected bound states in the continuum (BIC). The perfect extrinsic and intrinsic chiral responses (circular dichroism exceeding 0.99), with ultra-high Q-factors, are achieved by utilizing quasi-BICs induced by illumination symmetry and in-plane symmetry breaking. The circular dichroism value and the transmittance of the two circular polarization states can be arbitrarily controlled by adjusting the structural parameters. Furthermore, the feasibility of achieving dynamic modulation of chiral response is demonstrated based on the a-Si-graphene hybrid metasurface. Our research offers an approach to the design of…

In this paper, a terahertz (THz) dual-band bandpass filter based on spoof surface plasmon polaritons (SSPPs) with wide upper stopband suppression is proposed. The filter utilizes two types of SSPP unit cells loaded on a double-sided quasi-SSPPs transmission line to achieve dual-band filtering responses and wide upper stopband suppression simultaneously. The performance and bandwidth of the filter's passbands can be adjusted by modifying the SSPP unit cells within the dual-band filtering part. The detailed design method is provided to enhance understanding of the operating principle of the presented filter. The simulation results of the designed THz filter demonstrate its excellent dual-band filtering performance. It features a wide stopband spanning from 0.91 to 1.45 THz with | S 21 | < -35 dB. To validate the proposed approach, a microwave filter with a similar design is implemented. In many cases, optical metasurfaces are studied in the single-resonant regime. However, a multiresonant behavior can enable multiband devices with reduced footprint, and is desired for applications such as display pixels, multispectral imaging and sensing. Multiresonances are typically achieved by engineering the array lattice (e.g., to obtain several surface lattice resonances), or by adopting a unit cell hosting one (or more than one) nanostructure with some optimized geometry to support multiple resonances. Here, we present a study on how to achieve multiresonant metasurfaces in the visible spectral range by exploiting high-order multipoles in dielectric (e.g., diamond or titanium dioxide) nanostructures. We show that in a simple metasurface (for a fixed particle and lattice geometry) one can achieve triple resonance occurring nearly at RGB (red, green, and blue) wavelengths. Based on analytical and numerical analysis, we demonstrate that the physical mechanism enabling the multiresonance behavior is the lattice induced coupling (energy exchange) between high-order Mie-type…

We report a dual-polarization radio frequency (RF) channelizer based on microcombs. Two high-Q micro-ring resonators (MRRs) with slightly different free spectral ranges (FSRs) are used: one MRR is pumped to yield soliton crystal microcombs ("active"), and the other MRR is used as a "passive" periodic optical filter supporting dual-polarization operation to slice the RF spectrum. With the tailored mismatch between the FSRs of the active and passive MRRs, wideband RF spectra can be channelized into multiple segments featuring digital-compatible bandwidths via the Vernier effect. Due to the use of dual-polarization states, the number of channelized spectral segments, and thus the RF instantaneous bandwidth (with a certain spectral resolution), can be doubled. In our experiments, we used 20 microcomb lines with ∼ 49 GHz FSR to achieve 20 channels for each polarization, with high RF spectra slicing resolutions at 144 MHz (TE) and 163 MHz (TM), respectively; achieving an instantaneous RF operation bandwidth of 3.1 GHz (TE) and 2.2 GHz (TM). We report a trace gas sensing technique of cavity-enhanced light-induced thermoelastic spectroscopy (CE-LITES) with a Fabry–Pérot (F-P) optical cavity and a high-quality-factor resonant quartz tuning fork (QTF). Pound-Drever-Hall (PDH) locking method is used to lock the laser to the optical cavity. With only a short 9-cm optical cavity (finesse, ∼1283) and a tiny commercially available standard QTF ( Q -factor, ∼38910), a CE-LITES sensor for acetylene detection was developed to demonstrate this technique, achieving a minimum detection limit (MDL) of 7.5 parts-per-billion (ppb) for a 216-s integration time and a normalized noise equivalent absorption (NNEA) coefficient of as low as 1.91 × 10 −10 cm −1 ·W·Hz −1/2 . The developed technique bears promising potential for sensitive and accurate measurement that is needed for studying trace gas-phase analyte.

Quantum computing in high-dimensional spaces holds promise for a plethora of applications, i.e., handling more intricate information and executing wider quantum operations, in complex quantum information technologies (QITs). In the paper, we set up an error-heralded, resource-saving, circuit-simplified, and 4×4-dimensional controlled-not (CNOT) gate, where the polarized and spatial state of the flying photon (i.e., the control qudit) can effectively control the collective spin wave state of two atomic ensembles (i.e., the target qudit) in two double-sided cavities. Moreover, through meticulous analysis, the feasibility of the high-dimensional gate using existing technology boasts the exceptional performance including a near-unity fidelity and high efficiency exceeding 0.95, in principle, as the undesired performances originated from the little side leakage and the finite coupling strength, and the imperfect atom-ensemble-cavity interactions are heralded by single-photon detectors. Besides, auxiliary photons or atomic ensembles are unnecessary. Therefore, our protocol stands out for…

Pure-quartic solitons (PQSs) have recently received increasing attention due to their energy-width scaling over the traditional soliton, which has expanded our understanding of soliton dynamics with high-order dispersion in nonlinear systems. Here, we numerically reveal the asynchronization and synchronization processes of the sub-pulse within the vector PQS molecule in a mode-locked fiber laser by solving the coupled Ginzburg-Landau equations. During the establishment of a vector PQS molecule, the repulsion, attraction, and finally stabilization processes have been observed. The effect of the TiO 2 scattering layer on improving the LED’s angular intensity non-uniformity (AIN) was studied by ray-tracing simulations and optimized by varying the particle concentration. The magnetic manipulation technique formed the microcolumns and magnetic chains of the Fe 3 O 4 anti-reflective layer, which was optimized by adjusting Fe 3 O 4 particle size, magnetic field strength, and Fe 3 O 4 concentration. The resulting bilayered device significantly increased the ACR by 11.38 times and reduced AIN by 63% compared to conventional graphite-based LEDs, while maintaining high brightness and consistent color quality across angles. Inelastic two-wave mixing induced high-efficiency transfer of optical vortices

    Show abstract

A scheme for high-efficiency transfer of optical vortices is proposed by an inelastic two-wave mixing (ITWM) process in an inverted-Y four-level atomic medium, which is originally prepared in a coherent superposition of two ground states. The orbital angular momentum (OAM) information in the incident vortex probe field can be transferred to the generated signal field through the ITWM process. Choosing reasonable experimentally realizable parameters, we find that the presence of the off-resonance control field can greatly improve the conversion efficiency of optical vortices, rather than in the absence of a control field. This is caused by the broken of the destructive interference between two one-photon excitation pathways. Furthermore, we also extend our model to an inelastic multi-wave mixing process and demonstrate that the transfer efficiency between multiple optical vortices strongly depends on the superposition of the ground states. Finally, we explore the composite vortex beam generated by collinear superposition of the incident vortex probe and signal fields. It is obvious…

The display system comprises a high-resolution 2D display panel, an SCLA, and a light shaping diffuser. The high-resolution 2D display panel presents an elemental image array, the SCLA modulates the light rays emitted from the 2D display panel to form 3D images in space, and the light shaping diffuser eliminates the gaps between 3D pixels of the 3D images. Here, we report a distributed acoustic sensing (DAS) system integrated MCF to suppress coherent fading, which overcomes an inevitable challenge in DAS systems. Because the parallel spatial cores in MCF allow the use of space-division multiplexed (SDM) technology, we propose that fading can be effectively suppressed by merging different signals with the spatial rotated-vector-average (SRVA) method. We theoretically analyze the principle of SRVA in fading suppression, and identify that it can effectively reduce phase noise with preventing phase unwrapping failures. A vector magnetic field sensor based on a ferrofluid-encapsulated coreless D-shaped fiber is proposed and demonstrated. The core of the singlemode fiber (SMF) is completely removed by fiber polishing technology, and the remaining part transformed into a multimode interference (MMI) waveguide. The exposed side-polishing plane enable the evanescent field to interact with surrounding magnetic fluid (MF). Relying on the non-circularly symmetric geometry of the coreless D-shaped fiber and the MF refractive index modulation by the orientation and intensity of the applied magnetic field, vector magnetic field sensing is achieved. The magnetic field response characteristics of the coreless D-shaped fibers with different residual thicknesses (RTs) are investigated. The experimental results show that a reduced RT yields enhanced sensitivity, and the magnetic field intensity sensitivity reaches -0.231 nm/mT and -0.483 dB/mT at a RT of 42.7 µm. The developed coreless D-shaped fiber sensor exclusively utilizes SMF, thereby offering a cost-effective scheme for the fabrication of vector magnetic…

Conventional radar jamming and deception systems typically necessitate the custom design of complex circuits and algorithms to transmit an additional radio signal toward a detector. Consequently, they are often cumbersome, energy-intensive, and difficult to operate in broadband electromagnetic environment. With the ongoing trend of miniaturization of various devices and the improvement of radar system performance, traditional techniques no longer meet the requirements for broadband, seamless integration, and energy efficiency. Time-varying metasurfaces, capable of manipulating electromagnetic parameters in both temporal and spatial domains, have thus inspired many contemporary research studies to revisit established fields. In this paper, we introduce a time-varying metasurface driven radar jamming and deception system (TVM-RJD), which can perfectly overcome the aforementioned intrinsic challenges. Leveraging a programmable bias voltage, the TVM-RJD can alter the spectrum distribution of incident waves, thereby deceiving radar into making erroneous judgments about the target's…

Orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) waveform is highly preferred as a dual-function candidate for integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) systems. However, the sensitivity to both carrier frequency offset (CFO) and phase noise greatly impedes its applications in millimeter-wave ISAC systems. Here, we propose and experimentally demonstrate a photonic millimeter-wave ISAC system employing the virtual-carrier-aided self-coherent OFDM technique, wherein a digitally-generated local oscillator is transmitted along with the OFDM signal. The generation of a specific laser beam profile on the work surface is key to various laser beam shaping tasks, relying heavily on diffractive optical elements (DOEs). Most beam-shaping DOEs are designed using iterative Fourier transform algorithms (IFTAs), which generally have slow convergence and prone to stagnate at local minima. Moreover, the microreliefs generated by IFTAs tend to be irregular, complicating manufacturing and causing uncontrolled scattering of light. We propose a differentiable DOE design method that applies a phase-smoothness constraint using multi-level B-splines. A multi-scale gradient-descent optimization strategy, naturally linked with the multi-level B-splines, is employed to robustly determine the optimized phase distribution that is fully continuous. This, in turn, can lead to more regular DOE microreliefs, which can simplify the fabrication process and be less sensitive to changes in wavelength and working distance. Furthermore, our method can also design a fully continuous freeform lens, distinguished from most freeform lens design approaches by its…

The benefits of higher data transmission rates, extensive communication frequency bandwidths, reduced power consumption, and enhanced anti-interference capabilities make inter-satellite optical communication (ISOC) a promising technology for the future. However, during orbital motion, satellites are subjected to external perturbation forces, which affect the performance of the ISOC system. This paper establishes an ISOC system consisting of two co-orbital satellites orbiting the Earth under the influence of perturbations. Metasurfaces hold great promise for terahertz (THz) chiral-optical devices. Here, we proposed a chiral THz metasurface with quasi-bound state in the continuum (BIC) for maximum chirality. By exploiting structural perturbations of the dipole displacement and the diverging angle for the THz metasurface, the symmetry-protected BIC transforms into quasi-BIC. The critical coupling condition is satisfied by the introduction of graphene, enabling the theoretical maximum absorption of the quasi-BIC. Subsequently, the perturbations are balanced to obtain maximum chirality. The numerical simulations show that the THz metasurface exhibits strong linear chirality with the circular dichroism (CD) of 0.99 at the quasi-BIC. Additionally, the chiral third harmonic generation (THG) is achieved, characterized by high efficiency up to 19% and strong THG-CD as high as 0.99. It is expected that the THz metasurfaces has great potential for applications in chiral sensing and imaging.

Deep learning has become an attractive tool for addressing the limitations of traditional digital image correlation (DIC). However, extending learning-based DIC methods to three-dimensional (3D-DIC) measurements is challenging due to the limited displacement estimation range, which cannot handle the large displacements caused by stereo-matching disparities. Besides, most of the existing learning-based DIC architectures lack prior information to guide displacement estimation, resulting in insufficient accuracy. To solve these problems, we proposed a learning-based 3D-DIC (i.e., Deep 3D-DIC) using a coarse-to-fine network called G-RAFT for large and accurate image displacement estimation. The residual small deformation between the reference image and the warped image is further extracted using the recently proposed RAFT-DIC with high accuracy. By subtracting small…

Schottky contact-type metal-semiconductor-metal solar-blind ultraviolet detectors with an Au/Ni/Ga2O3/Ni/Au structure were fabricated on the epitaxial thin films. The Schottky barrier height is about 1.1 eV. The device exhibited a high responsivity of up to 800 A/W, and a detectivity of 6 × 1014 Jones while maintaining a relatively fast response speed with a rise time of 4 ms and a fall time of 12 ms. The photo-to-dark current ratio was greater than 103, and the external quantum efficiency exceeded 103, indicating a significant gain in the device. Through the analysis of TCAD simulation and experimental results, it is determined that the impact ionization at the edge of the MSM electrode and channel contact is the main source of gain. Barrier tunneling effects and the photoconductive effect due to different carrier mobilities were not the primary reasons for the gain.

The security and confidentiality of information are crucial in contemporary communication systems. In this work, we propose a physical layer security-enhanced optical communication scheme based on dual-level protection with chaos masking (CMS) and chaotic hardware encryption. The integration of CMS and chaotic hardware encryption contributes to enhancing the security of the system. Different uncorrelated chaos generated from a single Fabry-Perot (FP) laser are employed to independently mask and encrypt the confidential signals for multiple channels in a wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) system. Thanks to the CMS and temporal intensity scrambling, the signals are encrypted into a noise-like signal to against direct demasking or decryption attacks. Compared to individual CMS or encrypting the signals using stand-alone dispersion components, numerical results demonstrate that the proposed scheme significantly enhances communication security. The decrypted bit error rate (BER) for 10 Gb/s data in each channel at the legitimate receiver is lower than the hard decision forward error…

We present hybrid-integrated extended cavity diode lasers tunable around 637 nm, with a gain-wide spectral coverage of 8 nm. This tuning range addresses the zero-phonon line of nitrogen-vacancy centers and includes the wavelength of HeNe lasers (633 nm). Best performance shows wide mode-hop free tuning up to 97 GHz and a narrow intrinsic linewidth down to 10 kHz. Also, the maximum output power is 2.5 mW in a single-mode fiber, corresponding to an on-chip power of 4.0 mW. Full integration and packaging in standard housing with fiber pigtails provide high intrinsic stability and enable integration into complex optical systems.

Infections caused by Vibrio parahaemolyticus ( V. parahaemolyticus ) can be highly fatal, making rapid and sensitive detection of them is essential. A new optical fiber biosensor based on localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) phenomenon is developed in this paper. A tapered-in-tapered fiber structure based on MFM is constructed by using four-core fiber (FCF) and multi-mode fiber (MMF) to qualitatively detect different concentrations of V. parahaemolyticus . The sensor successfully excites the LSPR phenomenon and increases the attachment point of biomolecules on the probe surface by fixing gold nanoparticles (AuNPs), molybdenum disulfide nanoparticles (MoS 2 -NPs) and cerium dioxide nanorods (CeO 2 -NRs). The functionalization of polyclonal antibodies on the probe surface can improve the specificity of the sensor. The linear detection range of the developed sensor was 1 × 10 0 -1 × 10 7 CFU/mL, the sensitivity was 1.61 nm/[CFU/mL], and the detection limit was 0.14 CFU/mL. In addition, the reusability, reproducibility, stability, and selectivity of the sensor probe are also…

Enhancing laser temperature stability by passive self-injection locking to a microring resonator

Yonghang Sun, James Salamy, Caitlin E. Murray, Brent E. Little, Sai Tak Chu and 4 more

    23 citationsOpen accessdoi:10.1364/oe.515269OpenAlex

    Show abstract

We show a thermally stable self-injection DFB laser lock to a microring resonator system, increasing the range of temperature for which a laser stays within 100 MHz of the target frequency by a factor of 100. By including amplification in the feedback loop, the per-laser power dedicated to this locking was reduced. We further added a 2.2 km fiber spool to explore the remote locking performance of the system.

How to read this list

The cohort is every article, review and book chapter OpenAlex attributes to Optics Express with publication year 2024, excluding retracted works and paratext such as editorials and errata. The top 100 by citation count are listed; the percentile is the rank divided by the cohort size. 100 of the 100 entries have an abstract in OpenAlex.
