We demonstrate a fully submerged underwater LiDAR transceiver system based on single-photon detection technologies. The LiDAR imaging system used a silicon single-photon avalanche diode (SPAD) detector array fabricated in complementary metal-oxide semiconductor (CMOS) technology to measure photon time-of-flight using picosecond resolution time-correlated single-photon counting. The SPAD detector array was directly interfaced to a Graphics Processing Unit (GPU) for real-time image reconstruction capability. Experiments were performed with the transceiver system and target objects immersed in a water tank at a depth of 1.8 meters, with the targets placed at a stand-off distance of approximately 3 meters. The transceiver used a picosecond pulsed laser source with a central wavelength of 532 nm, operating at a repetition rate of 20 MHz and average optical power of up to 52 mW, dependent on scattering conditions. Three-dimensional imaging was demonstrated by implementing a joint surface detection and distance estimation algorithm for real-time processing and visualization, which achieved…

Histamine is a biologically active molecule that serves as a reliable predictor of the quality of fish. In this work, authors have developed a novel humanoid-shaped tapered optical fiber (HTOF) biosensor based on the localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) phenomenon to detect varying histamine concentrations. In this experiment, a novel and distinctive tapering structure has been developed using a combiner manufacturing system and contemporary processing technologies. Graphene oxide (GO)/multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) are immobilized on the HTOF probe surface to increase the biocompatibility of biosensor. In this instance, GO/MWCNTs are deployed first, then gold nanoparticles (AuNPs). Consequently, the GO/MWCNTs help to give abundant space for the immobilization of nanoparticles (AuNPs in this case) as well as increase surface area for the attachment of biomolecules to the fiber surface. By immobilizing AuNPs on the surface of the probe, the evanescent field can stimulate the AuNPs and excite the LSPR phenomena for sensing the histamine. The surface of the sensing probe…

An on-chip Mach-Zehnder interferometer (MZI) hydrogen sensor, applying a double-slot hybrid plasmonic (DSHP) waveguide composed of a Si waveguide and two Pd disks on both sides as the sensing arm, is designed. The optical confinement factor of the sensing area can be up to 87%. For the MZI hydrogen sensor with a DSHP waveguide of 14 µm, the sensitivity can be as high as 11.935 nm/%, corresponding to a free spectral range (FSR) of 15 nm. Furthermore, the sensor sensitivity is influenced by the MZI structure parameters, which is highly adjustable. The extinction ratio of the interference spectra can reach over 30 dB. A feasible solution is provided in this paper for highly sensitive hydrogen detection.

Chalcogenide hollow-core anti-resonant fibers (HC-ARFs) are a promising propagation medium for high-power mid-infrared (3-5 µm) laser delivery, while their properties have not been well understood and their fabrications remain challenging. In this paper, we design a seven-hole chalcogenide HC-ARF with touching cladding capillaries, which was then fabricated from purified As 40 S 60 glass by combining the “stack-and-draw” method with a dual gas path pressure control technique. In particular, we predict theoretically and confirm experimentally that such medium exhibits higher-order mode suppression properties and several low-loss transmission bands in the mid-infrared spectrum, with the measured fiber loss being as low as 1.29 dB/m at 4.79 µm. Our results pave the way for the fabrication and implication of various chalcogenide HC-ARFs in mid-infrared laser delivery systems.

In this work, authors have developed a portable, sensitive, and quick-response fiber optic sensor that is capable of detection of Aflatoxins B1 (AFB1) quantitatively and qualitatively. Using multi-mode fiber (MMF) and multi-core fiber (MCF), the MMF-MCF-MCF-MMF fiber structure based on symmetric transverse offset splicing and waist-expanded taper is fabricated. The evanescent waves are enhanced to form a strong evanescent field by etching the fiber surface with hydrofluoric acid. To successfully excite the localized surface plasmon resonance phenomenon, gold nanoparticles are deposited on the optical fiber probe's surface. Further, to modify the fiber optic probes, Niobium carbide (Nb 2 CT x ) MXene and AFB1 antibodies are functionalized. Nb 2 CT x MXene is employed to strengthen the biocompatibility of the sensor and increase the specific surface area of the fiber probe, while AFB1 antibody is used to identify AFB1 micro-biomolecules in a specific manner. The reproducibility, reusability, stability, and selectivity of the proposed fiber probe are tested and validated using various…

In recent years, metasurfaces have attracted considerable interest for their unprecedented capabilities to manipulate intensity, phase, and polarization of an electromagnetic wave. Although metasurface-based wavefront modulation has achieved numerous successful results, implementation of multifunctional devices in a single metasurface still meet significant challenges. Here, a novel multilayer structure is designed using properties of vanadium dioxide (VO 2 ). Propagation phase and geometric phase are introduced in this structure to achieve multichannel holographic imaging in terahertz band. When the temperature is above 68°C, VO 2 becomes a metal and it plays a role in wavefront modulation for terahertz wave. The left-handed channel realizes a hologram letter L and the right-handed channel realizes a hologram letter R. When the temperature is below 68°C, VO 2 changes to an insulator, and electromagnetic wave is controlled by gold structures embedded inside a VO 2 film. In this case, hologram number 2 is realized in the left-handed channel and hologram number 6 appears in the…

Surface Plasmon Resonance (SPR) based fiber optic curvature sensors have the advantage of being insensitive to temperature and axial strain. However, they have the disadvantage of low sensitivity and small curvature detection range. To improve the performance of SPR curvature sensors, we propose an intensity-modulated microstructured optical fiber (MOF) curvature sensor. In this sensor, two no-core fibers (NCFs) are used as input-output couplers, and MOF with silver film deposited is used as sensing arms. The light in the cladding is used to excite the SPR, and the exciting resonant valley is extremely sensitive to slight bending changes. The performance of this sensor is investigated theoretically and experimentally. Numerical results show that its cladding pattern is more favorable in the excitation of SPR effects. Experimental results show that the cladding mode of MOF is very sensitive to curvature changes, thus giving it a great advantage in bending measurements. Its sensitivity reaches 0.18 dB/m -1 , and linearity reaches 0.995 in the curvature range of 0-30 m -1 . The sensor…

Abstract: In this article, we introduce a novel comb shaped plasmonic refractive index sensor that employs a ZrN-Insulator-ZrN configuration. The sensor is constructed using Zirconium Nitride (ZrN), an alternative refractory material that offers advantages over traditional metals such as silver and gold, as ZrN is Standard Complementary Metal Oxide Semiconductor (CMOS)-compatible and has tunable optical properties. The sensor has recorded a maximum sensitivity, figure of merit (FOM), and sensing resolution of 1445.46 nm/RIU, 140.96, and 6.91 × 10^−7 𝑅𝐼𝑈^-1, respectively. Beyond that, the integration of ZrN offers the sensor with various advantages, including higher hardness, thermal stability at high temperatures, better corrosion and abrasion resistance, and lower electrical resistivity, whereas traditional plasmonic metals lack these properties, curtailing the real-world use of plasmonic devices. As a result, our suggested model surpasses the typical noble material based (Metal-Insulator-Metal) MIM arrangement and offers potential for the development of highly efficient,…

We propose a double-layer graphene sheets side coupling to a strip of graphene to obtain the optical pulling or pushing force. Combined with coupled mode theory and finite-difference time-domain simulations, it is found that the conveyor belt effect can be realized in conjunction with the lateral optical equilibrium effect upon the radiation loss κ e equal to the intrinsic loss κ o . The maximum total optical force acting on the strip in the symmetric mode (S-mode) can be up to ∼5.95 in the unit of 1/ c and the anti-symmetric (AS-mode) mode reach ∼2.75 1/ c . The optical trapping potential U x and optical trapping force F x for the S-mode have a value around -22.5 k B T/W and 240 pN/W, while for the AS-mode can up to ∼-56 k B T/W and 520 pN/W, respectively. An absolute phase retrieval method based on fringe amplitude encoding is proposed. Different from the conventional intensity coding methods which are based on time division multiplexing with multiple additional auxiliary patterns, the proposed fringe order encoding strategy is codeword overlapping interaction based on space division multiplexing. It just directly encodes different fringe amplitudes for different periods in corresponding sinusoidal phase-shifting patterns to generate space division multiplexing composite sinusoidal phase-shifting patterns and quantifies the fringe amplitudes into four levels as encoding strategy, so it can retrieve absolute phase without any additional auxiliary patterns. To improve the anti-interference capability of the proposed method, a codeword extraction method based on image morphological processing is proposed to segment the grayscale. Consequently, both the phase-shifting sinusoidal deformed patterns and the single frame space division multiplexing four gray-level codewords for fringe order recognition can be extracted respectively from the…

Enhancement of light-matter interactions is of great importance for many nanophotonic devices, and one way to achieve it is to feed energy perfectly to the strongly coupled system. Here, we propose gap-perturbed dimerized gratings based on bulk WS 2 for flexible control of the strong coupling or self-hybridization of a quasi-bound state in the continuum (quasi-BIC) and exciton. The simulation results show that when a gap perturbation is introduced into the system resulting in the Brillouin zone folding, BIC transforms into quasi-BIC whose quality factor ( Q -factor) is related to the value of gap perturbation. The strong coupling results in the anti-crossover behavior of the absorption spectra, and thus a Rabi splitting energy of 0.235 eV is obtained. With the assistance of temporal coupled-mode theory, the conditions for the strong critical coupling are obtained, and finally successful achievement of polaritonic coherent perfect absorption in the proposed system. Visible-light photonic integrated circuits (PICs) promise scalability for technologies such as quantum information, biosensing, and scanning displays, yet extending large-scale silicon photonics to shorter wavelengths has been challenging due to the higher losses. Silicon nitride (SiN) has stood out as the leading platform for visible photonics, but the propagation losses strongly depend on the film's deposition and fabrication processes. Current loss measurement techniques cannot accurately distinguish between absorption and surface scattering, making it difficult to identify the dominant loss source and reach the platform's fundamental limit. Here we demonstrate an ultra-low loss, high-confinement SiN platform that approaches the limits of absorption and scattering across the visible spectrum. Leveraging the sensitivity of microresonators to loss, we probe and discriminate each loss contribution with unparalleled sensitivity, and derive their fundamental limits and scaling laws as a function of wavelength, film properties and waveguide parameters. But, its nonlinear optical characteristics and applications in ultrafast optics have not been studied yet. This study prepares a microfiber decorated with a Cr2O3 film via magnetron sputtering deposition and examines its nonlinear optical characteristics. We demonstrate 3D printed aspherical singlet and doublet microoptical components by grayscale lithography and characterize and evaluate their excellent shape accuracy and optical performance. The typical two-photon polymerization (2PP) 3D printing process creates steps in the structure which is undesired for optical surfaces. We utilize two-photon grayscale lithography (2GL) to create step-free lenses. To showcase the 2GL process, the focusing ability of a spherical and aspherical singlet lens are compared. The surface deviations of the aspherical lens are minimized by an iterative design process and no distinct steps can be measured via confocal microscopy. We design, print, and optimize an air-spaced doublet lens with a diameter of 300 µm. After optimization, the residual shape deviation is less than 100 nm for the top lens and 20 nm for the bottom lens of the doublet. We examine the optical performance with an USAF 1951 resolution test chart to find a resolution of 645 lp/mm.

This paper proposes and demonstrates an ultrasensitive refractive index (RI) sensor based on harmonic Vernier effect (HEV) and a cascaded Fabry-Perot interferometer (FPI). The sensor is fabricated by sandwiching a hollow-core fiber (HCF) segment between a lead-in single-mode fiber (SMF) pigtail and a reflection SMF segment with an offset of 37 µm between two fiber centers to form a cascaded FPI structure, where the HCF is the sensing FPI, and the reflection SMF is the reference FPI. To excite the HEV, the optical path of the reference FPI must be multiple times (>1) that of the sensing FPI. Several sensors have been made to conduct RI measurements of gas and liquid. The sensor's ultrahigh RI sensitivity of up to ∼378000 nm/RIU can be achieved by reducing the detuning ratio of the optical path and increasing the harmonic order. This paper also proved that the proposed sensor with a harmonic order of up to 12 can increase the fabricated tolerances while achieving high sensitivity. The large fabrication tolerances greatly increase the manufacturing repeatability, reduce production…

A novel dual-frequency modulated heterodyne quartz-enhanced photoacoustic spectroscopy (DFH-QEPAS) was demonstrated for what we believe to be the first time in this study. In traditional H-QEPAS, the frequency of modulated sinusoidal wave has a frequency difference (Δ f ) with the resonance frequency ( f 0 ) of a quartz tuning fork (QTF). Owing to the resonance characteristic of QTF, it cannot excite QTF to the strongest response. To achieve a stronger response, a sinusoidal wave with a frequency of f 0 was added to the modulation wave to compose a dual-frequency modulation. Acetylene (C 2 H 2 ) was chosen as the target gas to verify the sensor performance. The proposed DFH-QEPAS improved 4.05 times of signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) compared with the traditional H-QEPAS in the same environmental conditions.

The network traffic of data centers (DCs) has increased unprecedentedly with the rapid development of digital economy. However, the data transmission faces security threats in the distributed optical interconnection and intensive interaction of DC networks. In this paper, we propose a chaotic phase noise-like encryption algorithm using geometric shaping (GS) for coherent DC interconnections (DCIs). A GS constellation is used to improve transmission performance, and it is combined with coherent equalization algorithms to improve security performance. Then, a chaotic encryption is designed based on phase noise-like transformation (PNLT). The data are effectively scrambled, and the confusion level of phase can be increased. Finally, 216 Gb/s 8-quadrature amplitude modulation (8-QAM) encrypted data are successfully verified on a 240 km transmission link of DCIs. The results show that this scheme can achieve a bit error rate (BER) performance gain of 1.1 dB and provide a highly compatible solution for realizing security enhanced DCIs.

Broadband integrated thin-film lithium niobate (TFLN) electro-optic modulators (EOM) are desirable for optical communications and signal processing in both the O-band (1310 nm) and C-band (1550 nm). To address these needs, we design and demonstrate Mach-Zehnder (MZ) EOM devices in a hybrid platform based on TFLN bonded to foundry-fabricated silicon photonic waveguides. Using a single silicon lithography step and a single bonding step, we realize MZ EOM devices which cover both wavelength ranges on the same chip. A compact fiber-optic temperature sensor with hybrid interferometers enhanced by the harmonic Vernier effect was proposed, which realized 36.9 times sensitization of the sensing Fabry-Perot interferometer (FPI). The hybrid interferometers configuration of the sensor consists of a FPI and a Michelson interferometer. The proposed sensor is fabricated by splicing the hole-assisted suspended-core fiber (HASCF) to the multi-mode fiber fused with the single-mode fiber, and filling polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) into the air hole of HASCF. The high thermal expansion coefficient of PDMS improves the temperature sensitivity of the FPI. The harmonic Vernier effect eliminates the limitation of the free spectral range on the magnification factor by detecting the intersection response of internal envelopes, and realizes the secondary sensitization of the traditional Vernier effect. Combing the characteristics of HASCF, PDMS, and first-order harmonic Vernier effect, the sensor exhibits a high detection sensitivity of -19.22 nm/°C. Twisted light carrying orbital angular momentum (OAM), which features a helical phase front, has shown its potential applications in diverse areas, especially in free-space optical (FSO) communications. Multiple orthogonal OAM beams can be utilized to enable high-capacity FSO communication systems. However, for practical OAM-based FSO communication links, atmospheric turbulence will cause serious power fluctuations and inter-model crosstalk between the multiplexed OAM channels, impairing link performance. In this paper, we propose and experimentally demonstrate a novel OAM mode-group multiplexing (OAM-MGM) scheme with transmitter mode diversity to increase system reliability under turbulence. Without adding extra system complexity, an FSO system transmitting two OAM groups with a total of 144 Gbit/s discrete multi-tone (DMT) signal is demonstrated under turbulence strength D/r0 of 1, 2, and 4. In our experiments, the proposed OAM-MGM scheme helps to achieve bit-error-rate (BER) mostly less than 3.8 × 10−3 under turbulence strength D/r0 of 1 and 2 with a total transmitted power of 10…

By measuring optical noise between 1500 nm to 1620 nm we demonstrate a potential for up to 100 quantum, 100 GHz wide channels coexisting with the classical synchronization signals. Both "White Rabbit" and pulsed laser-based synchronization protocols were characterized and compared. We establish a theoretical limit of the fiber link length for coexisting quantum and classical channels. The maximal fiber length is below approximately 100 km for off-the-shelf optical transceivers and can be significantly improved by taking advantage of quantum receivers.

Optical systems have been crucial for versatile applications such as consumer electronics, remote sensing and biomedical imaging. Designing optical systems has been a highly professional work due to complicated aberration theories and intangible rules-of-thumb, hence neural networks are only coming into this realm until recent years. In this work, we propose and implement a generic, differentiable freeform raytracing module, suitable for off-axis, multiple-surface freeform/aspheric optical systems, paving the way toward a deep learning-based optical design method. The network is trained with minimal prior knowledge, and it can infer numerous optical systems after a one-time training. The presented work unlocks great potential for deep learning in various freeform/aspheric optical systems, and the trained network could serve as an effective, unified platform for generating, recording, and replicating good initial optical designs.

Thin-film lithium niobate (TFLN) is a promising electro-optic (EO) photonics platform with high modulation bandwidth, low drive voltage, and low optical loss. However, EO modulation in TFLN is known to relax on long timescales. Instead, thermo-optic heaters are often used for stable biasing, but heaters incur challenges with cross-talk, high power, and low bandwidth. Here, we characterize the low-frequency (1 mHz to 1 MHz) EO response of TFLN modulators, investigate the root cause of EO relaxation and demonstrate methods to improve bias stability. We show that relaxation-related effects can enhance EO modulation across a frequency band spanning 1kHz to 20kHz in our devices – a counter-intuitive result that can confound measurement of half-wave voltage ( V π ) in TFLN modulators. We also show that EO relaxation can be slowed by more than 10 4 -fold through control of the LN-metal interface and annealing, offering progress toward lifetime-stable EO biasing. Such robust EO biasing would enable applications for TFLN devices where cross-talk, power, and bias bandwidth are critical, such…

It consists of a Transformer-based U-shaped Neural Network (TUNN) filtering algorithm and a concentration prediction network (CPN) based on MLP. This algorithm employs an end-to-end architectural design to extract information from noisy transmission spectra of methane and derive the CH 4 concentrations from denoised spectra, without intermediate steps. The results demonstrate the superiority of the proposed TUNN filtering algorithm over other typically employed digital filters. For concentration prediction, the determination coefficient (R 2 ) reached 99.7%. Even at low concentrations, R 2 remained notably high, reaching up to 89%. The proposed algorithm results in a more efficient, convenient, and accurate spectral data processing for TDLAS-based gas sensors.

The first step of measuring dissolved gases is the separation process of water and gases. The AGP mode can generate stronger field confinement and higher momentum, which could provide giant optical force, and has no polarization preference for the optical source. We have demonstrated that the trapping potential and force applied on polystyrene nanoparticle in the AGP cavities are as high as -13.6 × 10 2 k B T/mW and 2.5 nN/mW, respectively. The effect of radius of rounded corners and gap distance of AGP cavities on the optical force has been studied. Compared with an ideal nanocube, nanocube with rounded corners is more in line with the actual situation of the device. These results show that the larger radius of nanocube rounded corners, the smaller trapping potential and force provided by AGP cavities. The sensor structure involves filling the FP air cavities with polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) and magnetic fluid (MF) to create the PDMS and MF cavities for temperature and magnetic field detection, respectively. The two cavities are reflective structures, which are interconnected in series through a fiber-optic circulator. Experimental data demonstrates that the Vernier effect effectively enhances the sensor sensitivity. The average temperature sensitivity of the sensor is 26765 pm/°C within the range of 35∼39.5°C. The sensitivities of the temperature and magnetic field using the Vernier effect are about five times larger than those of the corresponding single FP cavity counterparts.

Multi-plane reconstruction is essential for realizing a holographic three-dimensional (3D) display. One fundamental issue in conventional multi-plane Gerchberg-Saxton (GS) algorithm is the inter-plane crosstalk, mainly caused by the neglect of other planes' interference in the process of amplitude replacement at each object plane. In this paper, we proposed the time-multiplexing stochastic gradient descent (TM-SGD) optimization algorithm to reduce the multi-plane reconstruction crosstalk. First, the global optimization feature of stochastic gradient descent (SGD) was utilized to reduce the inter-plane crosstalk. However, the crosstalk optimization effect would degrade as the number of object planes increases, due to the imbalance between input and output information. Thus, we further introduced the time-multiplexing strategy into both the iteration and reconstruction process of multi-plane SGD to increase input information. In TM-SGD, multiple sub-holograms are obtained through multi-loop iteration and then sequentially refreshed on spatial light modulator (SLM). The optimization…

By depositing the trapezoidal dielectric stripe on top of the 3D Dirac semimetal (DSM) hybrid plasmonic waveguide, the thermal tunable propagation properties have been systematically investigated in the terahertz regime, taking into account the influences of the structure of the dielectric stripe, temperature and frequency. The results manifest that as the upper side width of the trapezoidal stripe increases, the propagation length and figure of merit (FOM) both decrease. The propagation properties of hybrid modes are closely associated with temperature, in that when the temperature changes in the scope of 3-600 K, the modulation depth of propagation length is more than 96%. Additionally, at the balance point of plasmonic and dielectric modes, the propagation length and FOM manifest strong peaks and indicate an obvious blue shift with the increase of temperature. Furthermore, the propagation properties can be improved significantly with a Si-SiO 2 hybrid dielectric stripe structure, e.g., on the condition that the Si layer width is 5 µm, the maximum value of the propagation length…

The decoherence-free subspace (DFS) serves as a protective shield against certain types of environmental noise, allowing the system to remain coherent for extended periods of time. In this paper, we propose two protocols, i.e., one converts two-logic-qubit Knill-Laflamme-Milburn (KLM) state to two-logic-qubit Bell states, and the other converts three-logic-qubit KLM state to three-logic-qubit Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger states, through cavity-assisted interaction in DFS. Especially, our innovative protocols achieve their objectives in a heralded way, thus enhancing experimental accessibility. Moreover, single photon detectors are incorporated into the setup, which can predict potential failures and ensure seamless interaction between the nitrogen-vacancy center and photons. Rigorous analyses and evaluations of two schemes demonstrate their abilities to achieve near-unit fidelities in principle and exceptional efficiencies. Further, our protocols offer progressive solutions to the challenges posed by decoherence, providing a pathway towards practical quantum technologies.

In this paper, we investigate the optical nondegenerate solitons in a birefringent fiber with a 35 degree elliptical angle. We derive the nondegenerate bright one- and two-soliton solutions by solving the coupled Schrödinger equation. The formation of nondegenerate solitons is related to the wave numbers of the solitons, and we further demonstrate that it is caused by the incoherent addition of different components. We note that the interaction between two degenerate solitons or a nondegenerate soliton and a degenerate soliton is usually inelastic. This is led to the incoherent interaction between solitons of different components and the coherent interaction between solitons of the same component. Through the asymptotic analysis, we find that the two degenerate solitons are elastic interactions under certain conditions, and analyzed the influence of the Kerr nonlinear intensity coefficient γ and the second-order group velocity dispersion β 2 in this system on solitons: the velocity and amplitude of the solitons are proportional to | β 2 |, while the amplitude of the solitons is…

Recently, deep neural networks have been used for SIM reconstruction, yet they require training sets that are difficult to capture experimentally. We demonstrate that we can combine a deep neural network with the forward model of the structured illumination process to reconstruct sub-diffraction images without training data. The resulting physics-informed neural network (PINN) can be optimized on a single set of diffraction-limited sub-images and thus does not require any training set. We show, with simulated and experimental data, that this PINN can be applied to a wide variety of SIM illumination methods by simply changing the known illumination patterns used…

A high-sensitive photoacoustic spectroscopy (PAS) sensor, which is based on a multi-pass-retro-reflection-enhanced differential Helmholtz photoacoustic cell (DHPAC) and a high power diode laser amplified by erbium-doped fiber amplifier (EDFA), is presented in this work for the first time. In order to improve the interaction length between the light and target gas, the incident light was reflected four times through a multi-pass-retro-reflection-cell constructed by two right-angle prisms. A 1.53 µm distributed feedback (DFB) diode laser was selected to excite photoacoustic signal. Moreover, its power was amplified by an EDFA to 1000 mW to improve the amplitude of photoacoustic signal. Acetylene (C 2 H 2 ) was chosen as the target analysis to verify the reported sensor performance. Compared to double channel without multiple reflections, the 2 f signal of double channel with four reflections was improved by 3.71 times. In addition, when the output optical power of EDFA was 1000 mW, the 2 f signal has a 70.57-fold improvement compared with the multi-pass-retro-reflection-cell without…

Orbital angular momentum (OAM) has recently obtained tremendous research interest in free-space optical communications (FSO). During signal transmission within the free-space link, atmospheric turbulence (AT) poses a significant challenge as it diminishes the signal strength and introduce intermodal crosstalk, significantly reducing OAM mode detection accuracy. This issue directly impacts the performance of OAM-based communication systems and leads to a reduction in received information. To address this critical bottleneck of low mode recognition accuracy in OAM-based FSO-communications, a deep learning method based on vision transformers (ViT) is proposed for what we believe is for the first time. Designed carefully by numerous experts, the advanced self-attention mechanism of ViT captures more global information from the input image. To train the model, pretraining on a large dataset, named IMAGENET is conducted. Subsequently, we performed fine-tuning on our specific dataset, consisting of OAM beams that have undergone varying AT strengths. The computer simulation shows that based…

Terahertz logic gates play a crucial role in optical signal processing and THz digitization. In this paper, we propose a design strategy for graphene-based metamaterial THz all-optical logic gate devices based on the induced transparency effect of surface isolated. Theoretically, we realize Boolean operations by coupling of a hexagonal graphene resonant cavity with dual embedded rotatable ellipses. Based on the coupled mode theory, the elliptical rotation angle of the resonator is an important factor affecting the PIT phenomenon. We control the logic input by adjusting the rotation angles of the two embedded ellipses. The analysis results show that: under the incidence of y-polarized light, the ellipse deflection angle of 0° represents the input signal '0', and the ellipse deflection angle of 30° represents the input signal '1'. Through numerical simulation, the structure realizes two logical operations of NAND and AND. Under the incidence of x-polarized light, the ellipse deflection angle of 0° represents the input signal '0', and the ellipse deflection angle of 90° represents the…

Passive daytime radiative cooling (PDRC) as a zero-energy consumption cooling method has broad application potential. Common commercial crystalline silicon (c-Si) solar cell arrays suffer working efficiency loss due to the incident light loss and overheating. In this work, a radiative cooler with PDMS (polydimethylsiloxane) film and embedded SiO 2 microparticles was proposed to use in silicon solar cells. Both anti-reflection and radiative cooling performance can be improved through numerical parametric study. For the best performing of PDMS/SiO 2 radiative cooler, the thickness of PDMS layer, volume fraction and radius of the embedded SiO 2 particles have been determined as 55 µm, 8% and 500 nm, respectively. 94% of emissivity in first atmospheric window band (8–13 µm) for radiative cooling and 93.4% of solar transmittance at the crystalline silicon absorption band (0.3–1.1 µm) were achieved. We estimated that the PDMS/SiO 2 radiative cooler can lower the temperature of a bare c-Si solar cell by 9.5°C, which can avoid 4.28% of efficiency loss. More incident light can enter and be…

In this work, we propose two different graphene-covered nanostructured metamaterial absorbers inspired by Penrose tiling. These absorbers allow spectrally tunable absorption within the terahertz spectrum corresponding to 0.2-20 THz. We have conducted finite-difference time-domain analyses to determine the tunability of these metamaterial absorbers. The proposed structures, Penrose models 1 and 2, perform differently from each other due to their design characteristics. Penrose model 2 reaches a perfect absorption at 8.58 THz. In addition, the relative absorption bandwidth calculated at full-wave at half-maximum in Penrose model 2 varies between 5.2% and 9.4%, which characterizes the metamaterial absorber as a wideband absorber. Also, we can observe that as we increase the Fermi level of graphene from 0.1 to 1 eV, the absorption bandwidth and relative absorption bandwidth both increase. Our findings show the high tunability of both models through varying graphene's Fermi level, the graphene's thickness, the substrate's refractive index, and the proposed structures' polarization. We…

We report, what we believe to be, a novel miniaturized 3D-printed Y-type resonant photoacoustic cell (YRPAC) consisting of a frustum of cone-type buffer chamber and a cylindrical resonant chamber. The volume of the designed YRPAC is about 7.0 cm 3 , which is only about a half of the T-resonant photoacoustic cell (TRPAC). The finite element simulation of the sound field distribution of the TRPAC and YRPAC based on COMSOL shows that the photoacoustic signal is enhanced with the shape of the buffer chamber changing from the traditional cylinder to a frustum of cone. Light detection and ranging (lidar) is widely accepted as an indispensable sensor for autonomous vehicles. There are two fundamental challenges in a lidar system: optical beam steering technique and ranging method. Optical phased array (OPA) is considered as one of the most promising beam steering schemes due to its solid state, compact size, and high reliability. As for ranging method, time-of-flight and frequency-modulate continuous-wave (FMCW) are commonly utilized in numerous research. However, they are impractical to commercial OPA lidar due to either requiring excessive optical power or the poor stability, high complexity, and high insertion loss of the FMCW source. As a result, the development of OPA lidars is significantly hindered by the lack of a feasible ranging method. In this paper, we present a phase-modulated continuous-wave (PhMCW) ranging method with excellent ranging accuracy and precision. Ranging error as low as 0.1 cm and precision on the order of 3.5 cm are achieved. In addition, theoretical and experimental study on simultaneous velocity measurement is carried…

Since high-order harmonic generation (HHG) from atoms depends sensitively on the polarization of the driving laser field, the polarization gating (PG) technique was developed and applied successfully to generate isolated attosecond pulses from atomic gases. The situation is, however, different in solid-state systems as it has been demonstrated that due to collisions with neighboring atomic cores of the crystal lattice strong HHG can be generated even by elliptically- and circularly-polarized laser fields. Here we apply PG to solid-state systems and find that the conventional PG technique is inefficient for the generation of isolated ultrashort harmonic pulse bursts. In contrast, we demonstrate that a polarization-skewed laser pulse is able to confine the harmonic emission to a time window of less than one-tenth of the laser cycle. This method provides a novel way to control HHG and to generate isolated attosecond pulses in solids.

Imaging with single-pixel detectors becomes attractive in many applications where pixelated detectors are not available or cannot work. Based on a correlation between the probing patterns and the realizations, optical imaging with single-pixel detector offers an indirect way to recover a sample. Temporal phase unwrapping (TPU) is significant for recovering an unambiguous phase of discontinuous surfaces or spatially isolated objects in fringe projection profilometry. Generally, temporal phase unwrapping algorithms can be classified into three groups: the multi-frequency (hierarchical) approach, the multi-wavelength (heterodyne) approach, and the number-theoretic approach. For all of them, extra fringe patterns of different spatial frequencies are required for retrieving the absolute phase. Due to the influence of image noise, people have to use many auxiliary patterns for high-accuracy phase unwrapping. Consequently, image noise limits the efficiency and the measurement speed greatly. Further, these three groups of TPU algorithms have their own theories and are usually applied in different ways. In this work, for the first time to our knowledge, we show that a generalized framework using deep learning can be developed to perform the TPU task for different groups of TPU algorithms. Experimental results show that benefiting from the assistance of deep learning the proposed…

Frequency-modulated continuous-wave (FMCW) laser ranging is able to provide precise measurement in short distance. Rydberg electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) spectra involving 52 D 5/2 state is employed to measure the signal electric field. An auxiliary DC field is applied to improve the sensitivity. A DC Stark map is demonstrated, where the utilized 52 D 5/2 exhibits m j = 1/2, 3/2, 5/2 Stark shifts and splittings. The m j = 1/2 state is employed to detect the signal field because of its larger polarizability than that of m j = 3/2, 5/2. With optimization of the applied DC field to shift the m j = 1/2 Rydberg energy level to a high sensitivity region and the laser polarizations to obtain the maximum m j = 1/2 signal, we achieve the detection of the signal electric field with a frequency of 100 Hz down to 214.8 µ…

We propose a scheme to generate nonreciprocal photon blockade in a stationary whispering gallery microresonator system based on two physical mechanisms. One of the two mechanisms is inspired by recent work [Phys. Rev. Lett.128, 083604 (2022)10.1103/PhysRevLett.128.083604], where the quantum squeezing caused by parametric interaction not only shifts the optical frequency of propagating mode but also enhances its optomechanical coupling, resulting in a nonreciprocal conventional photon blockade phenomenon. On the other hand, we also give another mechanism to generate stronger nonreciprocity of photon correlation according to the destructive quantum interference. Comparing these two strategies, the required nonlinear strength of parametric interaction in the second one is smaller, and the broadband squeezed vacuum field used to eliminate thermalization noise is no longer needed. All analyses and optimal parameter relations are further verified by numerically simulating the quantum master equation. Our proposed scheme opens a new avenue for achieving the nonreciprocal single photon…

The correlation function and the detection probability of orbital angular momentum (OAM) of a perfect optical vortex beam (POVB) were obtained under atmospheric turbulence conditions and then used to estimate the POVB propagation model through atmospheric turbulence. The POVB propagation in a turbulence-free channel can be divided into anti-diffraction and self-focusing stages. The beam profile size can be well preserved in the anti-diffraction stage as the transmission distance increases. After shrinking and focusing the POVB in the self-focusing region, the beam profile size expands in the self-focusing stage. The influence of topological charge on the beam intensity and profile size differs depending on the propagation stage. The POVB degenerates into a Bessel-Gaussian beam (BGB)-like when the ratio of the ring radius to the Gaussian beam waist approaches 1. The unique self-focusing effect of the POVB enables higher received probability compared to the BGB when propagating over long distances in atmospheric turbulence. However, the property of the POVB that its initial beam…

Recently, augmented reality (AR) displays have attracted considerable attention due to the highly immersive and realistic viewer experience they can provide. One key challenge of AR displays is the fundamental trade-off between the extent of the field-of-view (FOV) and the size of the eyebox, set by the conservation of etendue sets this trade-off. Exit-pupil expansion (EPE) is one possible solution to this problem. However, it comes at the cost of distributing light over a larger area, decreasing the overall system's brightness. In this work, we show that the geometry of the waveguide and the in-coupler sets a fundamental limit on how efficient the combiner can be for a given FOV. This limit can be used as a tool for waveguide designers to benchmark the in-coupling efficiency of their in-coupler gratings. We design a metasurface-based grating (metagrating) and a commonly used SRG as in-couplers using the derived limit to guide optimization. We then compare the diffractive efficiencies of the two types of in-couplers to the theoretical efficiency limit. For our chosen waveguide…

Using a freeform optical surface can effectively reduce the imaging system weight and volume while maintaining good performance and advanced system specifications. But it is still very difficult for traditional freeform surface design when ultra-small system volume or ultra-few elements are required. Considering the images generated by the system can be recovered by digital image processing, in this paper, we proposed a design method of compact and simplified off-axis freeform imaging systems using optical-digital joint design process, which fully integrates the design of a geometric freeform system and the image recovery neural network. This design method works for off-axis nonsymmetric system structure and multiple freeform surfaces with complicated surface expression. The overall design framework, ray tracing, image simulation and recovery, and loss function establishment are demonstrated. We use two design examples to show the feasibility and effect of the framework. One is a freeform three-mirror system with a much smaller volume than a traditional freeform three-mirror…

The preceding works introduced the leapfrog complying divergence implicit finite-difference time-domain (CDI-FDTD) method, which exhibits high accuracy and unconditional stability. In this study, the method is reformulated to simulate general electrically anisotropic and dispersive media. The auxiliary differential equation (ADE) method is employed to solve the equivalent polarization currents, which are then integrated into the CDI-FDTD method. The iterative formulae are presented, and the calculation method is similar to that of the traditional CDI-FDTD method. Additionally, the Von Neumann method is utilized to analyze the unconditional stability of the proposed method. To evaluate the performance of the proposed method, three numerical cases are conducted. These include calculating the transmission and reflection coefficients of a monolayer graphene sheet and a monolayer magnetized plasma, as well as the scattering properties of a cubic block plasma. The numerical results obtained by the proposed method demonstrate its accuracy and efficiency in simulating general anisotropic…

FBG array sensors have been widely used in the multi-point monitoring of large structures due to their excellent optical multiplexing capability. This paper proposes a cost-effective demodulation system for FBG array sensors based on a Neural Network (NN). The stress variations applied to the FBG array sensor are encoded by the array waveguide grating (AWG) as transmitted intensities under different channels and fed to an end-to-end NN model, which receives them and simultaneously establishes a complex nonlinear relationship between the transmitted intensity and the actual wavelength to achieve absolute interrogation of the peak wavelength. In addition, a low-cost data augmentation strategy is introduced to break the data size bottleneck common in data-driven methods so that the NN can still achieve superior performance with small-scale data. In summary, the demodulation system provides an efficient and reliable solution for multi-point monitoring of large structures based on FBG array sensors.

AlGaN-based UV-A LEDs have wide applications in medical treatment and chemical sensing; however, their efficiencies are still far behind visible LEDs or even shorter wavelengths UV-C counterparts because of the large lattice mismatch between the low-Al-content active region and the AlN substrate. In this report, we investigated the composition and thickness of the quantum barrier in the active region in terms of LED performance. Due to the improved strain management and better carrier confinement, efficient UV-A LEDs (320 nm - 330 nm) with EQEs up to 6.8% were demonstrated, among the highest efficiencies at this wavelength range.

We have designed and fabricated a hybrid integrated laser source with full C-band wavelength tunability and high-power output. The external cavity laser is composed of a gain chip and a dual micro-ring narrowband filter integrated on the silicon nitride photonic chip to achieve a wavelength tuning range of 55 nm and a SMSR higher than 50 dB. Through the integration of the semiconductor optical amplifier in the miniaturized package, the laser exhibits an output power of 220 mW and linewidth narrower than 8 kHz over the full C-band. Such a high-power, narrow-linewidth laser diode with a compact and low-cost design could be applied whenever coherence and interferometric resolutions are needed, such as silicon optical coherent transceiver module for space laser communication, light detection and ranging (LiDAR).

Hetero-epitaxial growth of GaN often leads to high density of threading dislocations, which poses a significant challenge to the promotion of the performance of GaN-based devices. In this study, we address this issue by utilizing an Al-ion implantation pretreatment on sapphire substrates, which induces high-quality regularly arranged nucleation and promotes the crystal quality of GaN. Specifically, we demonstrate that an Al-ion dose of 10 13 cm -2 leads to a reduction of full width at half maximum values of (002)/(102) plane X-ray rocking curves from 204.7/340.9 arcsec to 187.0/259.5 arcsec. Furthermore, a systematic investigation of GaN film grown on the sapphire substrate with various Al-ion doses is also performed, and the nucleation layer growth evolution on different sapphire substrates is analyzed. As confirmed by the atomic force microscope results of the nucleation layer, the ion implantation induced high-quality nucleation is demonstrated, which results in the improved crystal quality of the as-grown GaN films. Transmission electron microscope measurement also proves the…

This paper proposes a high-security chaotic encrypted power sparse coding division (CE-PSCD) scheme for 7-core fiber based on non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) technology. The method utilizes power multiplexing to realize parallel transmission of two signals. Joint encryption of the four-dimensional region is realized using constellation mapping encryption, carrier frequency encryption, symbol scrambling, and sparse code scrambling. What we believe to be a new dimension for encryption of autonomously designed sparse codes is proposed. Meanwhile, we hide the chaotic key in training sequence (TS) to realize the co-transmission of the key and the message. A 70 Gb/s CE-PSCD signal transmission over 2 km of 7-core fiber is demonstrated experimentally. At the limit of forward error correction (FEC) ∼3.8 × 10 −3 , the difference in the encrypted sensitivity among different users at the equal power level is 0.36 dB, which means that the fairness of users will not be destroyed. This paper introduces an integrated dual-function deep learning-based underwater object detection and classification and temporal signal detection algorithm using three-dimensional (3D) integral imaging (InIm) under degraded conditions. The proposed system is an efficient object classification and temporal signal detection system for degraded environments such as turbidity and partial occlusion and also provides the object range in the scene. Broadband feedback control with an electro-optic modulator enables near thermal-noise-limited phase noise performance from 1 Hz to 10 kHz offset frequencies. The additional low vibration, temperature, and holding force sensitivity of our design makes it well suited for out-of-the-lab applications such as optically derived low noise microwave generation, compact and mobile optical atomic clocks, and environmental sensing through deployed fiber networks.

A Rydberg atom-based mixer has opened up a new method to characterize microwave electric fields such as the precise measurement of their phase and strength. This study further demonstrates, theoretically and experimentally, a method to accurately measure the polarization of a microwave electric field based on a Rydberg atom-based mixer. The results show that the amplitude of the beat note changes with the polarization of the microwave electric field in a period of 180 degrees, and in the linear region a polarization resolution better than 0.5 degree can be easily obtained which reaches the best level by a Rydberg atomic sensor. More interestingly, the mixer-based measurements are immune to the polarization of the light field that forms the Rydberg EIT. This method considerably simplifies theoretical analysis and the experimental system required for measuring microwave polarization using Rydberg atoms and is of interest in microwave sensing.

Digital holography is a 3D imaging technique by emitting a laser beam with a plane wavefront to an object and measuring the intensity of the diffracted waveform, called holograms. The object's 3D shape can be obtained by numerical analysis of the captured holograms and recovering the incurred phase. Recently, deep learning (DL) methods have been used for more accurate holographic processing. However, most supervised methods require large datasets to train the model, which is rarely available in most DH applications due to the scarcity of samples or privacy concerns. A few one-shot DL-based recovery methods exist with no reliance on large datasets of paired images. Still, most of these methods often neglect the underlying physics law that governs wave propagation. These methods offer a black-box operation, which is not explainable, generalizable, and transferrable to other samples and applications. In this work, we propose a new DL architecture based on generative adversarial networks that uses a discriminative network for realizing a semantic measure for reconstruction quality while…

Low extinction ratio (ER) and high temperature cross-sensitivity are serious but common problems for most strain sensors based on Vernier effect. In this study, a hybrid cascade strain sensor of a Mach–Zehnder interferometer (MZI) and a Fabry–Perot interferometer (FPI) with high sensitivity and high ER based on Vernier effect is proposed. The two interferometers are separated by a long single-mode fiber (SMF). The MZI is used as the reference arm, which can be flexibly embedded in the SMF. The FPI is used as the sensing arm and the hollow-core fiber (HCF) as the FP cavity to reduce optical loss. Simulation and experiments have proven that this method can significantly increase ER. At the same time, the second reflective face of the FP cavity is indirectly spliced to increase the active length to improve the strain sensitivity. Through the amplification of Vernier effect, the maximum strain sensitivity is –649.18 p m / μ ε , and the temperature sensitivity is only 5.76 pm/ ∘ C . The magnetic field was measured by combining the sensor with a Terfenol–D (magneto–strictive material)…

We propose and experimentally demonstrate a femtosecond laser plane-by-plane (Pl-b-Pl) technology for inscription of high-quality fiber Bragg gratings (FBGs). The spherical aberration (SA) was introduced to elongate the focal volume, and then combined with the scanning process, an expanded rectangular refractive index modification (RIM) region can be achieved. Such RIM regions exhibit a length of 15 µm and a width of 14 µm. Note that it consists of a negative region and a positive region. We have systematically studied the influence of the overlap between the RIM region and fiber core on the spectrum of FBG. After optimizing, the core of a conventional single-mode fiber (SMF) is covered completely by using the positive RIM region, resulting in a significant enhancement of the coupling strength coefficient (i.e., 3177.6 m -1 ). A 500 µm long FBG assembled by using these RIM regions can achieve a high reflectivity of 95.83%. Moreover, the cladding mode resonances in transmission spectrum are suppressed thoroughly, since the localized effect in RIM region was avoided. In addition, this…

Flying-focus pulses promise to revolutionize laser-driven secondary sources by decoupling the trajectory of the peak intensity from the native group velocity of the medium over distances much longer than a Rayleigh range. Previous demonstrations of the flying focus have either produced an uncontrolled trajectory or a trajectory that is engineered using chromatic methods that limit the duration of the peak intensity to picosecond scales. Here we demonstrate a controllable ultrabroadband flying focus using a nearly achromatic axiparabola-echelon pair. Spectral interferometry using an ultrabroadband superluminescent diode was used to measure designed super- and subluminal flying-focus trajectories and the effective temporal pulse duration as inferred from the measured spectral phase. The measurements demonstrate that a nearly transform- and diffraction-limited moving focus can be created over a centimeter-scale-an extended focal region more than 50 Rayleigh ranges in length. This ultrabroadband flying-focus and the novel axiparabola-echelon configuration used to produce it are ideally…

Digital in-line holographic microscopy (DIHM) enables efficient and cost-effective computational quantitative phase imaging with a large field of view, making it valuable for studying cell motility, migration, and bio-microfluidics. However, the quality of DIHM reconstructions is compromised by twin-image noise, posing a significant challenge. Conventional methods for mitigating this noise involve complex hardware setups or time-consuming algorithms with often limited effectiveness. In this work, we propose UTIRnet, a deep learning solution for fast, robust, and universally applicable twin-image suppression, trained exclusively on numerically generated datasets. The availability of open-source UTIRnet codes facilitates its implementation in various DIHM systems without the need for extensive experimental training data. This paper proposes applying the nested U 2 -Net to a two-dimensional phase unwrapping (PU). PU has been a classic well-posed problem since conventional PU methods are always limited by the Itoh condition. Numerous studies conducted in recent years have discovered that data-driven deep learning techniques can overcome the Itoh constraint and significantly enhance PU performance. However, most deep learning methods have been tested only on Gaussian white noise in a single environment, ignoring the more widespread scattered noise in real phases. The difference in the unwrapping performance of deep network models with different strategies under the interference of different kinds of noise or drastic phase changes is still unknown. This study compares and tests the unwrapping performance of U-Net, DLPU-Net, VUR-Net, PU-GAN, U 2 -Net, and U 2 -Netp under the interference of additive Gaussian white noise and multiplicative speckle noise by simulating the complex noise environment in the real samples. We report the flexible on-target delivery of 800 nm wavelength, 5 GW peak power, 40 fs duration laser pulses through an evacuated and tightly coiled 10 m long hollow-core nested anti-resonant fiber by positively chirping the input pulses to compensate for the anomalous dispersion of the fiber. Near-transform-limited output pulses with high beam quality and a guided peak intensity of 3 PW/cm 2 were achieved by suppressing plasma effects in the residual gas by pre-pumping the fiber with laser pulses after evacuation. This appears to cause a long-term removal of molecules from the fiber core. Identifying the fluence at the fiber core-wall interface as the damage origin, we scaled the coupled energy to 2.1 mJ using a short piece of larger-core fiber to obtain 20 GW at the fiber output. This scheme can pave the way towards the integration of anti-resonant fibers in mJ-level nonlinear optical experiments and laser-source development.

To avoid coating and filling into the fiber holes, facilitate the phase-matching and eliminate cross-sensitivity problems, we propose a surface plasmon resonance sensor based on a fan-shaped microstructured optical fiber (MOF) for the simultaneous sensing of temperature and refractive index (RI). The fan-shaped structure is fabricated by polishing two sides of MOF with an angle of 120°. One side is coated with the gold film and polydimethylsiloxane layer for temperature sensing, and the other side is only coated with the gold film for RI sensing. The two sensing sides can support resonance peaks with two polarized directions at the angle of 120°, which are independent without cross-sensitivity. By monitoring the shifts of the two polarized peaks, our numerical results show that the temperature sensitivity is 2.932 nm/°C in the range of 30 °C to 40 °C, and RI sensitivity is 4235 nm/RIU in the range of 1.38 to 1.39, respectively.

Bandpass microwave photonic filter (MPF) can be achieved based on the well-known phase to intensity conversion method by using phase modulation and single micro-ring resonator (MRR) notch filter. Since MRR could introduce residual phase in handling one optical sideband, the out-of-band radio frequency (RF) rejection ratio and the shape factor of the bandpass MPF are very limited. Here, by introducing another MRR to handle the other optical sideband, the residual phase can be greatly suppressed, thus the filter's performance can be greatly improved. The proposed bandpass MPF was both verified theoretically and experimentally. Compared with the single MRR, the out-of-band RF rejection ratio and the shape factor were improved by 20 dB and 1.67, respectively. Furthermore, the bandpass MPF's bandwidth is reconfigurable by adjusting the optical carrier's frequency or the two MRRs' amplitude coupling coefficients. The bandpass MPF's center frequency is also tunable by changing the resonant wavelengths of two MRRs in the opposite direction simultaneously. Experimentally, bandwidth…
