The term Metaverse is emerging as a result of the late push by multinational technology conglomerates and a recent surge of interest in Web 3.0, Blockchain, NFT, and Cryptocurrencies. From a scientific point of view, there is no definite consensus on what the Metaverse will be like. This paper collects, analyzes, and synthesizes scientific definitions and the accompanying major characteristics of the Metaverse using the methodology of a Systematic Literature Review (SLR). Two revised definitions for the Metaverse are presented, both condensing the key attributes, where the first one is rather simplistic holistic describing “a three-dimensional online environment in which users represented by avatars interact with each other in virtual spaces decoupled from the real physical world”. In contrast, the second definition is specified in a more detailed manner in the paper and further discussed. These comprehensive definitions offer specialized and general scholars an application within and beyond the scientific context of the system science, information system science, computer science,…

Time series forecasting uses data from the past periods of time to predict future information, which is of great significance in many applications. Existing time series forecasting methods still have problems such as low accuracy when dealing with some non-stationary multivariate time series data forecasting. Aiming at the shortcomings of existing methods, in this paper we propose a new time series forecasting model LSTM-attention-LSTM. The model uses two LSTM models as the encoder and decoder, and introduces an attention mechanism between the encoder and decoder. The model has two distinctive features: first, by using the attention mechanism to calculate the interrelationship between sequence data, it overcomes the disadvantage of the coder-and-decoder model in that the decoder cannot obtain sufficiently long input sequences; second, it is suitable for sequence forecasting with long time steps. In this paper we validate the proposed model based on several real data sets, and the results show that the LSTM-attention-LSTM model is more accurate than some currently dominant models in…

The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations suggests increasing the food supply by 70% to feed the world population by 2050, although approximately one third of all food is wasted because of plant diseases or disorders. To achieve this goal, researchers have proposed many deep learning models to help farmers detect diseases in their crops as efficiently as possible to avoid yield declines. These models are usually trained on personal or public plant disease datasets such as PlantVillage or PlantDoc. PlantVillage is composed of laboratory images captured under laboratory conditions, with one leaf each and a uniform background. The models trained on this dataset have very low accuracies when running on field images with complex backgrounds and multiple leaves per image. To solve this problem, PlantDoc was built using 2,569 field images downloaded from the Internet and annotated to identify the individual leaves. However, this dataset includes some laboratory images and the absence of plant pathologists during the annotation process may have resulted in…

The unprecedented growth in production and exchange of multimedia over unsecured channels is overwhelming mathematicians, scientists and engineers to realize secure and efficient cryptographic algorithms. In this paper, a color image encryption algorithm combining the KAA map with multiple chaotic maps is proposed. The proposed algorithm makes full use of Shannon’s ideas of security, such that image encryption is carried out through bit confusion and diffusion. Confusion is carried out through employing 2 encryption keys. The first key is generated from the 2D Logistic Sine map and a Linear Congruential Generator, while the second key is generated from the Tent map and the Bernoulli map. The field of data visualisation has long aimed to devise solutions for generating visualisations directly from natural language text. Research in Natural Language Interfaces (NLIs) has contributed towards the development of such techniques. However, the implementation of workable NLIs has always been challenging due to the inherent ambiguity of natural language, as well as in consequence of unclear and poorly written user queries which pose problems for existing language models in discerning user intent. Instead of pursuing the usual path of developing new iterations of language models, this study uniquely proposes leveraging the advancements in pre-trained large language models (LLMs) such as ChatGPT and GPT-3 to convert free-form natural language directly into code for appropriate visualisations. This paper presents a novel system, Chat2VIS, which takes advantage of the capabilities of LLMs and demonstrates how, with effective prompt engineering, the complex problem of language understanding can be solved more efficiently, resulting in simpler and more accurate end-to-end…

Cyberattacks represent an ever-growing threat that has become a real priority for most organizations. Attackers use sophisticated attack scenarios to deceive defense systems in order to access private data or cause harm. Machine Learning (ML) and Deep Learning (DL) have demonstrate impressive results for detecting cyberattacks due to their ability to learn generalizable patterns from flat data. However, flat data fail to capture the structural behavior of attacks, which is essential for effective detection. Contrarily, graph structures provide a more robust and abstract view of a system that is difficult for attackers to evade. Recently, Graph Neural Networks (GNNs) have become successful in learning useful representations from the semantic provided by graph-structured data. Intrusions have been detected for years using graphs such as network flow graphs or provenance graphs, and learning representations from these structures can help models understand the structural patterns of attacks, in addition to traditional features. Machine learning and deep learning techniques are widely used to assess intrusion detection systems (IDS) capable of rapidly and automatically recognizing and classifying cyber-attacks on networks and hosts. However, when destructive attacks are becoming more extensive, more challenges develop, needing a comprehensive response. Numerous intrusion detection datasets are publicly accessible for further analysis by the cybersecurity research community. However, no previous research has examined the performance of the proposed model on a variety of publicly accessible datasets in detail. Due to the dynamic nature of the attack and its rapidly changing attack techniques, the publicly accessible intrusion datasets must be updated and benchmarked regularly. The deep neural network (DNN) and convolutional neural network (CNN) are examined in this article as types of deep learning models for developing a flexible and effective IDS capable of detecting and comparing them with the proposed model in detecting cyber-attacks. The constant development of network behavior and the fast growth of…

Recent advancements in computer vision processing need potent tools to create realistic deepfakes. A generative adversarial network (GAN) can fake the captured media streams, such as images, audio, and video, and make them visually fit other environments. So, the dissemination of fake media streams creates havoc in social communities and can destroy the reputation of a person or a community. Moreover, it manipulates public sentiments and opinions toward the person or community. Recent studies have suggested using the convolutional neural network (CNN) as an effective tool to detect deepfakes in the network. But, most techniques cannot capture the inter-frame dissimilarities of the collected media streams. Motivated by this, this paper presents a novel and improved deep-CNN (D-CNN) architecture for deepfake detection with reasonable accuracy and high generalizability. Images from multiple sources are captured to train the model, improving overall generalizability capabilities. The images are re-scaled and fed to the D-CNN model. A binary-cross entropy and Adam optimizer are utilized…

In contrast to Silicon Carbide (SiC) devices, Gallium Nitride (GaN) devices are several steps behind in terms of development, standardization and achievable power levels. This makes the use and integration of these devices in real power applications more challenging. Commercially available current Power GaN devices are based on lateral normally ON HEMT transistors. In order to get normally OFF power transistors, two transistor structures have been proposed: enhancement mode (e-mode) and hybrid transistors. Current E-mode transistors present a low gate threshold voltage which could lead to crosstalk problems. In contrast, hybrid transistors have higher gate threshold voltages, however, the use of a Silicon MOSFET in their structure limits their performance. The semantic communication paradigm aims to bridge the gap of limited bandwidth problems in modern high-volume multimedia application content transmission. Integrating AI technologies with the 6G communications networks paved the way to develop semantic communication-based end-to-end communication systems. In this study, we have implemented a semantic communication-based end-to-end image transmission system, and we discuss potential design considerations in developing semantic communication systems in conjunction with physical channel characteristics. A Pre-trained GAN network is used at the receiver as the transmission task to reconstruct the realistic image based on the Semantic segmented image at the receiver input. The semantic segmentation task at the transmitter (encoder) and the GAN network at the receiver…

Segmenting brain tumors automatically using MR data is crucial for disease investigation and monitoring. Due to the aggressive nature and diversity of gliomas, well-organized and exact segmentation methods are used to classify tumors intra-tumorally. The proposed technique uses a Gray Level Co-occurrence matrix extraction of features approach to strip out unwanted details from the images. In comparison with the current state of the art, the accuracy of brain tumor segmentation was significantly improved using Convolutional Neural Networks, which are frequently used in the field of biomedical image segmentation. By merging the results of two separate segmentation networks, the proposed method demonstrates a major but simple combinatorial strategy that, as a direct consequence, yields much more precise and complete estimates. The battery performance decreases as the charging/discharging cycles increase. Thus, a battery management system (BMS) is essential to properly estimating the battery states. In order to enhance the performance of the BMS, an accurate estimation method for lithium-ion batteries state is proposed. The main drawback of the coulomb counting method (CCM) for estimating a state of charge (SoC) is the error of initial value. To make-up this problem, the open circuit voltage (OCV) method which includes the internal resistance of the battery has been applied to update the initial value. In this paper, an enhanced coulomb counting (ECC) method is proposed to improve the accuracy of SoC estimation. Due to the battery aging by repeated charging/discharging cycles, the charging/discharging times become reduced and it can be formulated as a function of coulombic efficiency. Using the power equation to the battery, the state of health (SoH) can be estimated according to the change in the internal resistance. Heart Disease (HD) is the reason for the deaths of 18 million people every year in the world. HD prediction is found to be a challenging issue that can provide a computerized estimate of the level of HD so that additional action can be simplified. Early detection and accurate prediction of HD play a critical role in providing timely medical interventions and improving patient outcomes. Thus, HD prediction has expected massive attention worldwide in healthcare environments. Deep Learning (DL) based systems played a significant role in various disease prediction and diagnosis with good efficiency. To this end, the main contribution of this paper is to design a robust HD prediction system using Hybrid Deep Neural Networks (HDNNs) involves combining multiple neural network architectures to extract and learn relevant features from the input data. The HDNN is employed to apply its feature learning capabilities and non-linear technology to capture complex patterns and relationships in HD datasets, leading to enhanced prediction accuracy. For this, three DL models, namely Artificial Neural…

The major cause of death globally is heart disease and it is increasing day by day. It is difficult to diagnose the heart disease at early stages until a cardiac issue occurs. Huge amount of heart disease data is available in the health care sector such as in clinics, hospitals etc. However, this data is not intelligently handled to extract useful knowledge. Machine learning techniques help in turning this medical data into useful knowledge. Machine learning is used to design such decision support systems (DSS) that can learn and improve from their past experiences. Recently, deep learning has gained the interest of industry and academics. This research paper focuses on diagnosis of heart disease with high accuracy. In the proposed approach, Keras based deep learning model is used for the computation of results using dense neural network. The proposed model is tested with different combination of hidden layers in dense neural network, started from 3layers to 9layers. Each hidden layer uses 100 neurons and activation function as Relu. Multiple benchmark heart disease datasets have…

A Software-Defined Network (SDN) was designed to simplify network management by allowing the control and management of the entire network from a single place. SDN is commonly used in today’s data center network infrastructures, but new forms of threats such as Distributed Denial-of-Service (DDoS), web attack, and the U2R (User to Root) attack are significant issues that might restrict the widespread adoption of SDNs. Intruders are attractive to SDN controllers because they are valuable targets. An SDN controller can be hijacked by an attacker and used to route traffic in accordance with its own needs, resulting in catastrophic consequences for the whole network. While the unified vision of SDN and deep learning methods opens new possibilities for the security of IDS deployment, the effectiveness of the detection models is dependent on the quality of the training datasets. Even though deep learning for NIDSs has lately shown promising results for a number of issues, the majority of the studies overlooked the impact of data redundancy and an unbalanced dataset. As a consequence, this…

How to read this list

The cohort is every article, review and book chapter OpenAlex attributes to IEEE Access with publication year 2023, excluding retracted works and paratext such as editorials and errata. The top 100 by citation count are listed; the percentile is the rank divided by the cohort size. 100 of the 100 entries have an abstract in OpenAlex. Counts were read on 29 October 2026 and will not be updated on this page, so a quoted rank stays verifiable. Full rules on the methodology page.
