Unlike previous studies on the Metaverse based on Second Life, the current Metaverse is based on the social value of Generation Z that online and offline selves are not different. With the technological development of deep learning-based high-precision recognition models and natural generation models, Metaverse is being strengthened with various factors, from mobile-based always-on access to connectivity with reality using virtual currency. The integration of enhanced social activities and neural-net methods requires a new definition of Metaverse suitable for the present, different from the previous Metaverse. This paper divides the concepts and essential techniques necessary for realizing the Metaverse into three components (i.e., hardware, software, and contents) and three approaches (i.e., user interaction, implementation, and application) rather than marketing or hardware approach to conduct a comprehensive analysis. Furthermore, we describe essential methods based on three components and techniques to Metaverse’s representative Ready Player One, Roblox, and Facebook research in…

Particle swarm optimization (PSO) is one of the most well-regarded swarm-based algorithms in the literature. Although the original PSO has shown good optimization performance, it still severely suffers from premature convergence. As a result, many researchers have been modifying it resulting in a large number of PSO variants with either slightly or significantly better performance. Mainly, the standard PSO has been modified by four main strategies: modification of the PSO controlling parameters, hybridizing PSO with other well-known meta-heuristic algorithms such as genetic algorithm (GA) and differential evolution (DE), cooperation and multi-swarm techniques. This paper attempts to provide a comprehensive review of PSO, including the basic concepts of PSO, binary PSO, neighborhood topologies in PSO, recent and historical PSO variants, remarkable engineering applications of PSO, and its drawbacks. Moreover, this paper reviews recent studies that utilize PSO to solve feature selection problems. Finally, eight potential research directions that can help researchers further enhance the…

In this paper, a new bio-inspired metaheuristic algorithm called Zebra Optimization Algorithm (ZOA) is developed; its fundamental inspiration is the behavior of zebras in nature. ZOA simulates the foraging behavior of zebras and their defense strategy against predators’ attacks. The ZOA steps are described and then mathematically modeled. ZOA performance in optimization is evaluated on sixty-eight benchmark functions, including unimodal, high-dimensional multimodal, fixed-dimensional multimodal, CEC2015, and CEC2017. The results obtained from ZOA are compared with the performance of nine well-known algorithms. The simulation results show that ZOA can solve optimization problems by creating a suitable balance between exploration and exploitation and has a superior performance compared to nine competitor algorithms. ZOA’s ability to solve real-world problems has been tested on four engineering design problems, namely, tension/compression spring, welded beam, speed reducer, and pressure vessel. The optimization results show that ZOA is an effective optimizer in determining the values…

Concise and unambiguous assessment of a machine learning algorithm is key to classifier design and performance improvement. In themulti-classclassification task, where each instance can only be labeled as one class, the confusion matrix is a powerful tool for performance assessment by quantifying the classification overlap. However, in themulti-labelclassification task, where each instance can be labeled with more than one class, the confusion matrix is undefined. Performance assessment of the multi-label classifier is currently based on calculating performance averages, such as hamming loss, precision, recall, and F-score. While the current assessment techniques present a reasonable representation of each class and overall performance, their aggregate nature results in ambiguity when identifying false negative (FN) and false positive (FP) results. To address this gap, we define a method of creating themulti-label confusion matrix(MLCM) based on three proposed categories of multi-label problems. After establishing the shortcomings of current methods for identifyingFNandFP, we…

Users’ privacy is vulnerable at all stages of the deep learning process. Sensitive information of users may be disclosed during data collection, during training, or even after releasing the trained learning model. Differential privacy (DP) is one of the main approaches proven to ensure strong privacy protection in data analysis. DP protects the users’ privacy by adding noise to the original dataset or the learning parameters. Thus, an attacker could not retrieve the sensitive information of an individual involved in the training dataset. In this survey paper, we analyze and present the main ideas based on DP to guarantee users’ privacy in deep and federated learning. In addition, we illustrate all types of probability distributions that satisfy the DP mechanism, with their properties and use cases. Fully homomorphic encryption (FHE) is a prospective tool for privacy-preserving machine learning (PPML). Several PPML models have been proposed based on various FHE schemes and approaches. Although FHE schemes are suitable as tools for implementing PPML models, previous PPML models based on FHE, such as CryptoNet, SEALion, and CryptoDL, are limited to simple and nonstandard types of machine learning models; they have not proven to be efficient and accurate with more practical and advanced datasets. Previous PPML schemes replaced non-arithmetic activation functions with simple arithmetic functions instead of adopting approximation methods and did not use bootstrapping, which enables continuous homomorphic evaluations. Thus, they could neither use standard activation functions nor employ large numbers of layers. In this work, we first implement the standard ResNet-20 model with the RNS-CKKS FHE with bootstrapping and verify the implemented model with the CIFAR-10 dataset and plaintext model parameters. Instead of replacing the non-arithmetic functions with simple arithmetic functions,…

Accurately predicting the Remaining Useful Life (RUL) of a Li-ion battery plays an important role in managing the health and estimating the state of a battery. With the rapid development of electric vehicles, there is an increasing need to develop and improve the techniques for predicting RUL. To predict RUL, we designed a Transformer-based neural network. First, battery capacity data is always full of noise, especially during battery charge/discharge regeneration. To alleviate this problem, we applied a Denoising Auto-Encoder (DAE) to process raw data. Then, to capture temporal information and learn useful features, a reconstructed sequence was fed into a Transformer network. Finally, to bridge denoising and prediction tasks, we combined these two tasks into a unified framework. Results of extensive experiments conducted on two data sets and a comparison with some existing methods show that our proposed method performs better in predicting RUL. Our projects are all open source and are available athttps://github.com/XiuzeZhou/RUL.

This paper proposes a new metaheuristic optimization algorithm based on ancient war strategy. The proposed War Strategy Optimization (WSO) is based on the strategic movement of army troops during the war. War strategy is modeled as an optimization process wherein each soldier dynamically moves towards the optimum value. The proposed algorithm models two popular war strategies, attack and defense strategies. The positions of soldiers on the battlefield are updated in accordance with the strategy implemented. To improve the algorithm’s convergence and robustness, a novel weight updating mechanism and a weak soldier’s relocation strategy are introduced. The proposed war strategy algorithm achieves good balance of the exploration and exploitation stages. A detailed mathematical model of the algorithm is presented. The efficacy of the proposed algorithm is tested on 50 benchmark functions and four engineering problems. The performance of the algorithm is compared with ten popular metaheuristic algorithms. The experimental results for various optimization problems prove the superiority of…

Due to the rapid development of technology, social media has become more and more common in human daily life. Social media is a platform for people to express their feelings, feedback, and opinions. To understand the sentiment context of the text, sentiment analysis plays the role to determine whether the sentiment of the text is positive, negative, neutral or any other personal feeling. Sentiment analysis is prominent from the perspective of business or politics where it highly impacts the strategic decision making. The challenges of sentiment analysis are attributable to the lexical diversity, imbalanced dataset and long-distance dependencies of the texts. In view of this, a data augmentation technique with GloVe word embedding is leveraged to synthesize more lexically diverse samples by similar word vector replacements. The data augmentation also focuses on the oversampling of the minority classes to mitigate the imbalanced dataset problems. Apart from that, the existing sentiment analysis mostly leverages sequence models to encode the long-distance dependencies. Nevertheless,…

For a long time, anomaly localization has been widely used in industries. Previous studies focused on approximating the distribution of normal features without adaptation to a target dataset. However, since anomaly localization should precisely discriminate normal and abnormal features, the absence of adaptation may make the normality of abnormal features overestimated. Thus, we propose Coupled-hypersphere-based Feature Adaptation (CFA) which accomplishes sophisticated anomaly localization using features adapted to the target dataset. CFA consists of (1) a learnable patch descriptor that learns and embeds target-oriented features and (2) scalable memory bank independent of the size of the target dataset. And, CFA adopts transfer learning to increase the normal feature density so that abnormal features can be clearly distinguished by applying patch descriptor and memory bank to a pre-trained CNN. The proposed method outperforms the previous methods quantitatively and qualitatively. For example, it provides an AUROC score of 99.5% in anomaly detection and 98.5% in anomaly localization…

Recent advancements in electronic commerce and communication systems have significantly increased the use of credit cards for both online and regular transactions. However, there has been a steady rise in fraudulent credit card transactions, costing financial companies huge losses every year. The development of effective fraud detection algorithms is vital in minimizing these losses, but it is challenging because most credit card datasets are highly imbalanced. Also, using conventional machine learning algorithms for credit card fraud detection is inefficient due to their design, which involves a static mapping of the input vector to output vectors. Therefore, they cannot adapt to the dynamic shopping behavior of credit card clients. This paper proposes an efficient approach to detect credit card fraud using a neural network ensemble classifier and a hybrid data resampling method. The ensemble classifier is obtained using a long short-term memory (LSTM) neural network as the base learner in the adaptive boosting (AdaBoost) technique. The fundamental inspiration used in TDO is simulation of the feeding behavior of the Tasmanian devil, who has two strategies: attacking live prey or feeding on carrions of dead animals. The proposed TDO is described, then its mathematical modeling is presented. TDO performance in optimization is tested on a set of twenty-three standard objective functions. Unimodal benchmark functions have analyzed the TDO exploitation capability, while high-dimensional multimodal and fixed-exploitation multimodal benchmark functions have challenged the TDO exploration capability. Researchers proposed different deep learning models in the identification of diseases in plants. However, the deep learning models require a large number of parameters, and hence the required training time is more and also difficult to implement on small devices. In this paper, we have proposed a novel deep learning model based on the inception layer and residual connection. Depthwise separable convolution is used to reduce the number of parameters. The proposed model has been trained and tested on three different plant diseases datasets. The performance accuracy obtained on plantvillage dataset is 99.39%, on the rice disease dataset is 99.66%, and on the cassava dataset is 76.59%. Here, we first aim to explain practical considerations to design and implement a reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) in the sub-6 GHz band and then, to demonstrate its real-world performance. The wave manipulation procedure is explored with a discussion on relevant electromagnetic (EM) concepts and backgrounds. Based on that, the RIS is designed and fabricated to operate at the center frequency of 3.5 GHz. The surface is composed of 2430 unit cells where the engineered reflecting response is obtained by governing the microscopic characteristics of the conductive patches printed on each unit cell. To achieve this goal, the patches are not only geometrically customized to properly reflect the local waves, but also are equipped with specific varactor diodes to be able to reconfigure their response when it is required. An equivalent circuit model is presented to analytically evaluate the unit cell’s performance with a method to measure the unit cell’s characteristics from the macroscopic response of the RIS. The patches are printed on six standard-size substrates which then placed…

Context. Since its proclamation in 2012, microservices-based architecture has gained widespread popularity due to its advantages, such as improved availability, fault tolerance, and horizontal scalability, as well as greater software development agility. Motivation. Yet, refactoring a monolith to microservices by smaller businesses and expecting that the migration will bring benefits similar to those reported by top global companies, such as Netflix, Amazon, eBay, and Uber, might be an illusion. Indeed, for systems that do not have thousands of concurrent users and can be scaled vertically, the benefits of such migration have not been sufficiently investigated, while the existing evidence is inconsistent. Objective. The purpose of this paper is to compare the performance and scalability of monolithic and microservice architectures on a reference web application. Method. The application was implemented in four different versions, covering not only two different architectural styles (monolith vs. microservices) but also two different implementation technologies (Java vs. C#.NET).…

Diabetic Retinopathy (DR) is a degenerative disease that impacts the eyes and is a consequence of Diabetes mellitus, where high blood glucose levels induce lesions on the eye retina. Diabetic Retinopathy is regarded as the leading cause of blindness for diabetic patients, especially the working-age population in developing nations. Treatment involves sustaining the patient’s current grade of vision since the disease is irreversible. Early detection of Diabetic Retinopathy is crucial in order to sustain the patient’s vision effectively. The main issue involved with DR detection is that the manual diagnosis process is very time, money, and effort consuming and involves an ophthalmologist’s examination of eye retinal fundus images. The latter also proves to be more difficult, particularly in the early stages of the disease when disease features are less prominent in the images. Machine learning-based medical image analysis has proven competency in assessing retinal fundus images, and the utilization of deep learning algorithms has aided the early diagnosis of Diabetic Retinopathy (DR).…

The application of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) to cybersecurity challenges has gained traction in industry and academia, partially as a result of widespread malware attacks on critical systems such as cloud infrastructures and government institutions. Intrusion Detection Systems (IDS), using some forms of AI, have received widespread adoption due to their ability to handle vast amounts of data with a high prediction accuracy. These systems are hosted in the organizational Cyber Security Operation Center (CSoC) as a defense tool to monitor and detect malicious network flow that would otherwise impact the Confidentiality, Integrity, and Availability (CIA). CSoC analysts rely on these systems to make decisions about the detected threats. However, IDSs designed using Deep Learning (DL) techniques are often treated as black box models and do not provide a justification for their predictions. This creates a barrier for CSoC analysts, as they are unable to improve their decisions based on the model’s predictions. One solution to this problem is to design…

Logistics is an important driver for the competitiveness of industries and material supply. The development of smart logistics, powered by precise positioning and communication technologies can significantly improve the efficiency of logistics. The emerging technology of ultra-wideband (UWB) precision positioning has attracted significant attention throughout the previous decade owing to its promising capabilities over other radio frequency-based indoor localisation systems. In addition, UWB is characterised by large bandwidth and data rate, short message length, low transmission power and high penetration capability, which are all favourable for indoor positioning applications. However, UWB localisation technology faces several challenges that are somewhat similar to other technologies, such as mitigating errors that originate from non-line-of-sight (NLOS) situations and tackling signal interference in dense environments, and when required to operate in extreme conditions. This paper reviews the most recent advances made in UWB positioning systems over the last five years, with a…

Blockchain systems have seen much growth in recent years due to the immense potential attributed to the technology behind these systems. However, this popularity has outlined a critical scalability issue that most blockchain systems are now confronted with. With their increasing popularity comes an increasing amount of load on the system. Several scaling solutions that modify either the functioning of the underlying protocol or that build on top of them have already been proposed; however, each of these solutions comes with their advantages and disadvantages. This paper aims to survey the current state-of-the-art of rollups as a scaling solution. We discuss the mode of operation of the different types of rollups, outline state-of-the-art implementations of each type together with their features and limitations. We also conduct a performance analysis comparing these implementations. Finally, we outline avenues for future research around rollups as a scaling solution.

The field of Deep Learning (DL) has seen a remarkable series of developments with increasingly accurate and robust algorithms. However, the increase in performance has been accompanied by an increase in the parameters, complexity, and training and inference time of the models, which means that we are rapidly reaching a point where DL may no longer be feasible. On the other hand, some specific applications need to be carefully considered when developing DL models due to hardware limitations or power requirements. In this context, there is a growing interest in efficient DL algorithms, with Spiking Neural Networks (SNNs) being one of the most promising paradigms. Due to the inherent asynchrony and sparseness of spike trains, these types of networks have the potential to reduce power consumption while maintaining relatively good performance. This is attractive for efficient DL and if successful, could replace traditional Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs) in many applications. However, despite significant progress, the performance of SNNs on benchmark datasets is often lower than that…

Plant diseases are a severe cause of crop losses in the agriculture globally. Detection of diseases in plants is difficult and challenging due to the lack of expert knowledge. Deep learning-based models provide promising ways to identify plant diseases using leaf images. However, need of larger training sets, computational complexity, and overfitting, etc. are the major issues with these techniques that still need to be addressed. In this work, a convolutional neural network (CNN) is developed that consists of smaller number of layers leading to lower computational burden. Some augmentation techniques such as shift, shear, scaling, zoom, and flipping are applied to generate additional samples increasing the training set without actually capturing more images. The CNN model is trained for apple crop using a publicly available dataset PlantVillage to identify Scab, Black rot, and Cedar rust diseases in apple leaves. The rigorous experimental results revealed that the proposed model is well fit to identify apple leaf diseases and achieves 98% classification accuracy. It is also evident…

RF fingerprinting leverages circuit-level variability of transmitters to identify them using signals they send. Signals used for identification are impacted by a wireless channel and receiver circuitry, creating additional impairments that can confuse transmitter identification. Eliminating these impairments or just evaluating them, requires data captured over a prolonged period of time, using many spatially separated transmitters and receivers. In this paper, we present WiSig; a large-scale WiFi dataset containing 10 million packets captured from 174 off-the-shelf WiFi transmitters and 41 USRP receivers over 4 captures spanning a month. WiSig is publicly available, not just as raw captures, but as conveniently pre-processed subsets of limited size, along with the scripts and examples. A preliminary evaluation performed using WiSig shows that changing receivers, or using signals captured on a different day can significantly degrade a trained classifier’s performance. While capturing data over more days or more receivers limits the degradation, it is not always feasible, and novel…

Automatic speech recognition (ASR) is one of the most demanding tasks in natural language processing owing to its complexity. Recently, deep learning approaches have been deployed for this task and have been proven to outperform traditional machine learning approaches such as Artificial Neural Network (ANN). In particular, deep-learning methods such as long short-term memory (LSTM) have achieved improved ASR performance. However, this method is limited to processing continuous input streams. Traditional LSTM requires four (4) linear layers (multilayer perceptron (MLP) layer) per cell with a large memory bandwidth for each sequence time step. LSTM cannot accommodate the many computational units required for processing continuous input streams because the system does not have sufficient memory bandwidth to feed the computational units. In this study, an enhanced deep learning LSTM recurrent neural network (RNN) model was proposed to resolve this shortcoming. In the proposed model, the RNN is incorporated as a “forget gate” to the memory block to allow the resetting of cell states at…

This paper proposes an approach to detect distinctive BT types using Gaussian Convolutional Neural Network (GCNN) on two datasets. One of the datasets is used to classify tumors into pituitary, glioma, and meningioma. The other one separates the three grades of glioma, i.e., Grade-two, Grade-three, and Grade-four. These datasets have ’233’ and ’73’ victims with a total of ’3064’ and ’516’ images on T1-weighted complexity improved pictures for the first and second datasets, separately. Blockchain technology and its applications are gaining popularity day by day. It is a ground-breaking technology that allows users to communicate without the need of a trusted middleman. A smart contract (self-executable code) is deployed on the blockchain and auto executes due to a triggering condition. In a no-trust contracting environment, smart contracts can establish trust among parties. Terms and conditions embedded in smart contracts will be imposed immediately when specified criteria have been fulfilled. Due to this, the malicious assailants have a special interest in smart contracts. Blockchains are immutable means if some transaction is deployed or recorded on the blockchain, it becomes unalterable. Thus, smart contracts must be analyzed to ensure zero security vulnerabilities or flaws before deploying the same on the blockchain because a single vulnerability can lead to the loss of millions. For analyzing the security vulnerabilities of smart contracts, various analysis tools have been developed to create safe and secure smart contracts. This paper presents a systematic…

How to read this list

The cohort is every article, review and book chapter OpenAlex attributes to IEEE Access with publication year 2022, excluding retracted works and paratext such as editorials and errata.
