Deep neural network for modeling soliton dynamics in the mode-locked laser

Yin Fang, Haobin Han, Wen-Bo Bo, Wei Liu, Benhai Wang and 2 more

    115 citationsdoi:10.1364/ol.482946OpenAlex

    Show abstract

Integrating the information of the first cycle of an optical pulse in a cavity into the input of a neural network, a bidirectional long short-term memory (Bi_LSTM) recurrent neural network (RNN) with an attention mechanism is proposed to predict the dynamics of a soliton from the detuning steady state to the stable mode-locked state. The training and testing are based on two typical nonlinear dynamics: the conventional soliton evolution from various saturation energies and soliton molecule evolution under different group velocity dispersion coefficients of optical fibers. In both cases, the root mean square error (RMSE) for 80% of the test samples is below 15%. In addition, the width of the conventional soliton pulse and the pulse interval of the soliton molecule predicted by the neural network are consistent with the experimental results. These results provide a new insight into the nonlinear dynamics modeling of the ultrafast fiber laser.

Simple technique of coupling a diode laser into a linear power buildup cavity for Raman gas sensing

Ge Hu, Weipin Kong, Rui Wang, Gang Zhao, Weiguang Ma and 2 more

    98 citationsdoi:10.1364/ol.486417OpenAlex

    Show abstract

We report a novel, to the best of our knowledge, and simple technique to lock a 642 nm multi-quantum well diode laser to an external linear power buildup cavity by directly feeding the cavity reflected light back to the diode laser for enhancement of gas Raman signals. The dominance of the resonant light field in the locking process is achieved by reducing the reflectivity of the cavity input mirror and thus making the intensity of the directly reflected light weaker than that of the resonant light. Compared with traditional techniques, stable power buildup in the fundamental transverse mode TEM 00 is guaranteed without any additional optical elements or complex optical arrangements. An intracavity exciting light of 160 W is generated with a 40 mW diode laser. Using a backward Raman light collection geometry, detection limits at the ppm level are achieved for ambient gases (N 2 , O 2 ) with an exposure time of 60 s.

We propose and demonstrate a high-efficiency silicon microring modulator for next-generation optical transmitters operating at line rates above 300 Gb/s. The modulator supports high-order PAM-8 modulation up to 110 Gbaud (330 Gb/s), with a driving voltage of 1.8 V pp . The small driving voltage and device capacitance yields a dynamic energy consumption of 3.1 fJ/bit. Using the modulator, we compare PAM-8 with ultrahigh baud rate PAM-4 of up to 130 Gbaud (260 Gb/s) and show PAM-8 is better suited for 300-Gb/s lane rate operation in bandwidth-constrained short-reach systems.

    62 citationsdoi:10.1364/ol.500214OpenAlex

    Show abstract

In this Letter, a differential integrating sphere-based photoacoustic spectroscopy (PAS) gas sensor is proposed for the first time to our knowledge. The differential integrating sphere system consists of two integrating spheres and a tube. Based on differential characteristics, the photoacoustic signal of the designed differential integrating sphere was doubly enhanced and the noise was suppressed. Compared with a single channel integrating sphere, the differential integrating sphere sensing system had a 1.86 times improvement in signal level. An erbium-doped fiber amplifier (EDFA) was adopted to amplify the output of diode laser to enhance the optical excitation. The second harmonic (2 f ) signal of differential integrating sphere-based acetylene (C 2 H 2 ) PAS sensor with an amplified 1000 mW optical output power was 104.67 mV, which was 22.80 times improved compared to the sensing system without EDFA. When the integration time was 100 s, the minimum detection limit (MDL) of the differential integrating sphere-based C 2 H 2 PAS sensor was 416.7 ppb. The differential integrating…

Spiraling Laguerre–Gaussian solitons and arrays in parabolic potential wells

    59 citationsdoi:10.1364/ol.498868OpenAlex

    Show abstract

Controllable trajectories of beams are one of the main themes in optical science. Here, we investigate the propagation dynamics of Laguerre-Gaussian (LG) solitons in parabolic potential wells and introduce off-axis and chirp parameters (which represent the displacement and the initial angle of beams) to make solitons sinusoidally oscillate in the x and y directions and undergo elliptically or circularly spiraling trajectories during propagation. Additionally, LG solitons with different orders and powers can be combined into soliton arrays of various shapes, depending on the off-axis parameter. Moreover, the soliton arrays can exhibit periodic converging, rotating, and other evolution behaviors, by the proper choice of the chirp parameter. A series of interesting examples demonstrate typical propagation scenarios. Our results may provide a new perspective on and stimulate further investigations of multisoliton interactions in potential wells and may find applications in optical communication and particle control.

We experimentally demonstrate a high-rate discretely modulated continuous-variable quantum key distribution over 80-km standard single-mode fiber with a 2.5 Gbaud, 16-symbol, two-ring constellation. With the help of well-designed digital signal processing algorithms, the excess noise of the system can be effectively suppressed. The achieved secret key rates are 49.02 Mbits/s, 11.86 Mbits/s, and 2.11 Mbits/s over 25-km, 50-km, and 80-km optical fiber, respectively, and achieve 67.4%, 70.0%, and 66.5% of the secret key rate performance of a Gaussian-modulated protocol. Our work shows that it is feasible to build a high-performance, long-distance continuous-variable quantum key distribution system with only a small constellation size.

Yaodi Pi, Heng Wang, Yan Pan, Yun Shao, Yang Li and 4 more

    57 citationsOpen accessdoi:10.1364/ol.485913OpenAlex

    Show abstract

We experimentally demonstrated a sub-Mbps key rate Gaussian-modulated coherent-state (GMCS) continuous-variable quantum key distribution (CV-QKD) over a 100-km transmission distance. To efficiently control the excess noise, the quantum signal and the pilot tone are co-transmitted in the fiber channel based on wideband frequency and polarization multiplexing methods. Furthermore, a high-accuracy data-assisted time domain equalization algorithm is carefully designed to compensate the phase noise and polarization variation in low signal-to-noise ratio. The asymptotic secure key rate (SKR) of the demonstrated CV-QKD is experimentally calculated to be 7.55 Mbps, 1.87 Mbps, and 0.51 Mbps over a transmission distance of 50 km, 75 km, and 100 km, respectively. The experimentally demonstrated that the CV-QKD system significantly improves the transmission distance and SKR compared to the state-of-art GMCS CV-QKD experimental results, and shows the potential for long-distance and high-speed secure quantum key distribution.

    54 citationsdoi:10.1364/ol.503287OpenAlex

    Show abstract

A new temperature measurement method based on light-induced thermoelastic spectroscopy (LITES) was demonstrated for the first time, to the best of our knowledge, in this manuscript. According to the thermoelastic effect of quartz tuning fork (QTF), this technique retrieves the temperature on the basis of the resonance signal of QTF. Wavelength modulation spectroscopy (WMS) combined with the dual-line method was used to achieve temperature measurement. A QTF with high-frequency selectivity and high-quality factor (Δ f 0 = 2.5 Hz, Q -factor = 13104.9) was used as the detection element to suppress noise and improve the signal level. Two absorption lines of water vapor (H 2 O) located at 7153.749 cm −1 and 7154.354 cm −1 were selected as the target line. A single distributed feedback (DFB) diode laser was used to cover the two selected absorption lines simultaneously to reduce the complexity of the sensor system. A tube furnace capable of covering a temperature range from 400°C to 1000°C was adopted to verify the performance of this method. The relative error of the measured temperature…

Ultra-fast 3D imaging by a big codewords space division multiplexing binary coding

Haitao Wu, Yiping Cao, Yongbo Dai, Hechen Zhang

    52 citationsdoi:10.1364/ol.488980OpenAlex

    Show abstract

Patternless binary coding strategies have been a challenge for ultra-fast 3D imaging with structured light. This Letter proposes a big codewords space division multiplexing binary coding method. From the third to the multiple order, a special spatial binary coding instead of the Gray code is created for the first time, to the best of our knowledge, to achieve an ultra-wide unambiguous range with only one auxiliary pattern. Advantageously, a connection domain segmentation technique with anomaly detection is proposed to achieve decoding of the fringe order, which cleverly avoids the misalignment problem. Additionally, a center of gravity method is applied to compensate for the codewords of the residual connected domain. The robustness and effectiveness of the proposed method for complex, isolated, and non-uniform reflectivity objects, as well as the ultra-fast 3D imaging of dynamic measurements, are experimentally verified.

Multi-sites energy transfer in Fe 3+ -doped KAl 11 O 17 phosphor toward zero thermal quenching near-infrared luminescence

    52 citationsdoi:10.1364/ol.481641OpenAlex

    Show abstract

Near-infrared (NIR) phosphor-converted light-emitting diodes (pc-LEDs) have demonstrated great potential for optoelectronic and biomedical applications, while the exploration of NIR phosphors with high thermal stability remains a challenge. Herein, we report an NIR phosphor KAl 11 O 17 :Fe 3+ with zero thermal quenching (TQ) behavior up to 200°C. The asymmetrical broadband NIR emission with three sub-bands centered at 700, 770, and 800 nm is related to the superposition of different Fe 3+ emission centers located in Al 2 O 4 , Al 3 O 6 , and Al 4 O 6 sites of the KAl 11 O 17 host, respectively. Temperature- and Fe 3+ concentration-dependent emission spectra verify that the energy transfer (ET) between multiple Fe 3+ emitters and the weak electron–phonon coupling (EPC) effect contribute to the thermally stable broadband NIR emission. The fabricated NIR pc-LED using optimized KAl 11 O 17 :Fe 3+ phosphor exhibits great potential in information encryption applications.

Optical phased arrays (OPAs) with high speed, low power consumption, and low insertion loss are appealing for various applications, including light detection and ranging, free-space communication, image projection, and imaging. These OPAs can be achieved by fully harnessing the advantages of integrated lithium niobate (LN) photonics, which include high electro-optical modulation speed, low driving voltage, and low optical loss. Here we present an integrated LN OPA that operates in the near-infrared regime. Our experimental results demonstrate 24 × 8° two-dimensional beam steering, a far-field beam spot with a full width at half maximum of 2 × 0.6°, and a sidelobe suppression level of 10 dB. Furthermore, the phase modulator of our OPA exhibits a half-wave voltage of 6 V. The low power consumption exhibited by our OPA makes it highly attractive for a wide range of applications. Beyond conventional applications, our OPA's high speed opens up the possibility of novel applications such as high-density point cloud generation and tomographic holography.

    Show abstract

Near-unity circular dichroism (CD) with high quality ( Q )-factors has wide applications in chiral lasers, modulators, detectors, etc. In this work, we firstly suggest a feasible approach to realize near-unity CD (∼0.94) with a high Q -factor (>2 × 10 4 ) supported by a toroidal dipole (TD) empowered superchiral quasi-bound states in the continuum (BICs) metasurface. Based on intensity, excellent electrical switching is achieved by adjusting the Fermi energy of the graphene on the metasurface. High refractive index sensitivity (136.2 nm/RIU) and figure of merit (1135 RIU −1 ) demonstrate its superior chiral sensing detection performance. Moreover, the near-unity CD displays a large robustness to the asymmetry offset. Our work paves a feasible avenue for well-designed superchiral quasi-BIC metasurfaces with high Q -factor near-unity CD for chiral applications in electrically tunable modulators, switches, sensors, etc.

    47 citationsdoi:10.1364/ol.486416OpenAlex

    Show abstract

In this Letter, we present a learning-based method for efficient Fourier single-pixel imaging (FSI). Based on the auto-encoder, the proposed adaptive under-sampling technique (AuSamNet) manages to optimize a sampling mask and a deep neural network at the same time to achieve both under-sampling of the object image's Fourier spectrum and high-quality reconstruction from the under-sampled measurements. It is thus helpful in determining the best encoding and decoding scheme for FSI. Simulation and experiments demonstrate that AuSamNet can reconstruct high-quality natural color images even when the sampling ratio is as low as 7.5%. The proposed adaptive under-sampling strategy can be used for other computational imaging modalities, such as tomography and ptychography. We have released our source code.

    Show abstract

We present a high-performance laser frequency stabilization method using modulation transfer spectroscopy (MTS) on the rubidium 87 D 2 transition line. A substantial improvement of the laser frequency stability was achieved by searching for the optimal diameter and intensity settings of the probe and pump beam. The frequency instability measured from the beat frequency of two locked external cavity diode lasers (ECDLs) reached a short-term stability of 4.5 × 10 − 14 / τ and did not exceed 2 × 10 −12 until 10 5 s, which is the best performance reported thus far with a D 2 transition. The long-term stability is limited by the offset fluctuations of the baseline induced by the residual amplitude modulation (RAM), which can be further improved by reducing the current temperature variation of about 0.2 K by means of temperature stabilization or through a further reduction of the RAM.

Broadband optical properties of Ti 3 C 2 MXene revisited

The exceptional optical, electrical, and mechanical capabilities of layered transition metal carbides, nitrides, and carbonitrides, called MXenes, revolutionized materials science. Among them, Ti 3 C 2 received the most attention owing to the developed synthesis and processing methods, high conductivity, and pronounced plasmonic response. The latter, however, remains controversial with the open question of whether the peak around 800 nm has plasmonic or interband transition origin. To address this issue, we combine spectroscopic ellipsometry and transmittance results with first-principle computations. Their combination reveals that although Ti 3 C 2 is a metal, its optical response becomes plasmonic (Re ε < 0) above 1415 nm, in contrast to the previous understanding. In addition to fundamental significance, this dual dielectric/plasmonic optical response opens a path for theranostic applications, as we demonstrated on the example of Ti 3 C 2 nanospheres. Thus, our study revisits broadband (300–3300 nm) optical constants of Ti 3 C 2 and broadens its application scope in photonics.

Recently developed image-free sensing techniques have achieved remarkable performance in various vision tasks. However, existing image-free methods still cannot simultaneously obtain the category, location, and size information of all objects. In this Letter, we report a novel image-free single-pixel object detection (SPOD) technique. SPOD enables efficient and robust multi-object detection directly from a small number of measurements, eliminating the requirement for complicated image reconstruction. Different from the conventional full-size pattern sampling method, the reported small-size optimized pattern sampling method achieves higher image-free sensing accuracy with fewer pattern parameters (∼1 order of magnitude). Moreover, instead of simply stacking CNN layers, we design the SPOD network based on the transformer architecture. It can better model global features and reinforce the network's attention to the targets in the scene, thus improving the object detection performance. We demonstrate the effectiveness of SPOD on the Voc dataset, which achieves a detection accuracy of…

An investigation on the temperature dependence of spectroscopic parameters of trivalent thulium ions is important for the design of high-power, thulium-doped fiber lasers and amplifiers. In this Letter, the thulium absorption/emission cross sections are determined in the spectral range 700-2200 nm and in the temperature range from -196°C to 300°C. The spectra are obtained from the absorption and emission measurements of a thulium-doped fiber and from measured thulium concentration profiles. Attempts were made to estimate the temperature dependence of the spectra where the measurements are not accessible. Firstly, the spectra are fitted to a multi-Gaussian model with temperature dependent parameters. Secondly, a physically motivated model of the cross section spectra is proposed and analyzed.

Evolution of intrinsic defects and ring structures on the surface of fused silica optics after CO 2 laser conditioning

    Show abstract

Recently and interestingly, experiments show that the CO 2 laser conditioning can significantly increase the laser-induced damage threshold (LIDT) of fused silica optics, but its underlying mechanism has not been clearly revealed. This Letter reports the experimental studies on the evolution of the intrinsic point defects and intrinsic ring structures on the surface of fused silica optics under the CO 2 laser irradiation. The laser conditioning can effectively reduce the intrinsic defect contents in the surface layer of mechanically processed fused silica. However, the suppression effect of defects can be affected by the initial surface state. If there are micro-cracks on the component surface, the effect of the laser conditioning would be limited. The evolution of the intrinsic ring structures indicate that most of the intrinsic defects tend to recombine as short (Si–O)n ring structures during the laser healing of the micro-fractures. The observed recombination behavior and suppression of the intrinsic defects can help find out the reason for the increase of the LIDT of the fused…

Stochastic nonlinear impairment is the primary factor that limits the transmission performance of high-speed orbital angular momentum (OAM) mode-division multiplexing (MDM) optical fiber communication systems. This Letter presents a low-complexity adaptive-network-based fuzzy inference system (LANFIS) nonlinear equalizer for OAM-MDM intensity-modulation direct-detection (IM/DD) transmission with three OAM modes and 15 wavelength division multiplex (WDM) channels. The LANFIS equalizer could adjust the probability distribution functions (PDFs) of the distorted pulse amplitude modulation (PAM) symbols to fit the statistical characteristics of the WDM-OAM-MDM transmission channel. Therefore, although the transmission symbols in the WDM-OAM-MDM system are subjected to a stochastic nonlinear impairment, the proposed LANFIS equalizer can effectively compensate the distorted signals. The proposed equalizer outperforms the Volterra equalizer with improvements in receiver sensitivity of 2, 1.5, and 1.3 dB for three OAM modes at a wavelength of 1550.12 nm, respectively. It also outperforms a…

Phase-change metasurfaces for dynamic control of chiral quasi-bound states in the continuum

    43 citationsdoi:10.1364/ol.507815OpenAlex

    Show abstract

Chiral quasi-bound states in the continuum (QBIC) offer novel mechanisms to achieve intrinsic chiroptical responses. However, current studies on chiral QBIC metasurfaces are restricted to the excitation of intrinsic chirality and fail to dynamically control its circular dichroism (CD) responses. Herein, we construct a phase-change metasurface based on paired Ge 2 Sb 2 Te 5 (GST) bars to demonstrate the dynamic control of the CD responses of chiral QBIC. The modified coupled mode theory (CMT) is proposed to evaluate the intrinsic chirality, and the predicted results are in good agreement with the finite–difference time-domain (FDTD) results. The maximal intrinsic chirality is associated with the spin-selected dipole mode, i.e., the coupled magnetic dipole (MD) QBIC mode for the left-handed circularly polarized (LCP) light and the decoupled electric dipole (ED) QBIC mode for the right-handed circularly polarized (RCP) light. By varying the volume fraction of GST, the location of chiral BIC can be tuned linearly, and the corresponding chiral response can be switched.

The three-primary-color chip array is the most straightforward to realize full-color micro-LED displays. However, the luminous intensity distribution shows high inconsistency between the AlInP-based red micro-LED and GaN-based blue / green micro-LEDs, resulting in the issue of angular color shift with different viewing angles. This Letter analyzes the angular dependence of color difference of conventional three-primary-color micro-LEDs, and proves that the inclined sidewall with homogeneous Ag coating has a limited angular regulation effect for micro-LEDs. Based on this, a patterned conical microstructure array is designed on the micro-LED’s bottom layer to effectively eliminate the color shift. This design cannot only regulate the emission of full-color micro-LEDs to perfectly meet Lambert’s cosine law without any external beam shaping elements, but also improve the light extraction efficiency of top emission by 16%, 161%, and 228% for red, green, and blue micro-LEDs, respectively. The color shift Δ u ′ v ′ of the full-color micro-LED display is also kept below 0.02 with the…

The proposed sensor is realized by side polishing a multi-mode optical fiber and adopting the surface plasmon resonance (SPR) effect. The side-polished surface is coated with a magnetic fluid (MF) and polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) successively along the fiber axis. The as-fabricated sensor can be used not only for magnetic field strength and direction sensing, but also for temperature detection. The achieved magnetic field intensity sensitivities are 1720 pm/mT (90° direction) and -710 pm/mT (0° direction), and the temperature sensitivity is -2070 pm/°C. On top of its temperature compensation ability, the easy fabrication and very high sensitivity of the proposed sensor are attractive features for vector magnetic field sensing applications.

    42 citationsdoi:10.1364/ol.486552OpenAlex

    Show abstract

Bound states in the continuum (BICs) hold great promise in enhancing light–matter interaction as they have an infinite Q -factor. To date, the symmetry-protected BIC (SP-BIC) is one of the most intensively studied BICs because it is easily found in a dielectric metasurface satisfying certain group symmetry. To convert SP-BICs into quasi-BICs (QBICs), structural symmetry shall be broken so that external excitation can access them. Usually, the unit cell’s asymmetry is created by removing or adding parts of dielectric nanostructures. The QBICs are usually excited only by s-polarized or p-polarized light because of the symmetry-breaking of the structure. In this work, we investigate the excited QBIC properties by introducing double notches on the edges of highly symmetrical silicon nanodisks. The QBIC shares the same optical response under the s-polarized and p-polarized light. The effect of polarization on coupling efficiency between the QBIC mode and incident light is studied, and the highest coupling efficiency occurs at a polarization angle of 135 ∘ , which corresponds to the…

Giant optical chirality in dielectric metasurfaces induced by toroidal dipole resonances

    Show abstract

Although toroidal dipole (TD) resonance is a highly localized mode with a high quality (Q) factor, in most chiral structures the TD resonance is much weaker than the electric or magnetic dipole resonances and contributes little to the chiral response. In this Letter, we theoretically propose a chiral all-dielectric TD metasurface that possesses giant optical chirality with a certain degree of incident-angle robustness induced by a strong TD resonance. Interestingly, the symmetry of the system can be broken simultaneously at oblique incidence to produce chiral quasi-bound states in the continuum. The nearly unchanged high-Q TD resonance within a certain range of incident angles can avoid the problem of a reduced image quality caused by the incident-angle sensitivity, as demonstrated by the polarization-multiplexed-field image displays. The giant chirality with a certain degree of incident-angle robustness induced by the TD mode would be useful in some applications, including high-quality optical imaging, high-performance asymmetric transmission, and sensing.

Here, a localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR)-based fiber biosensor combining a slide-type fiber structure (thus named WaveFlex Biosensor) and low-dimensional materials is proposed for alpha-fetoprotein (AFP) detection. Frequency-modulated continuous wave (FMCW) light detection and ranging (lidar) is a promising solution for three-dimensional (3D) imaging and autonomous driving. This technique maps range and velocity measurement to frequency counting via coherent detection. Compared with single-channel FMCW lidar, multi-channel FMCW lidar can greatly improve the measurement rate. A chip-scale soliton micro-comb is currently used in FMCW lidar to enable multi-channel parallel ranging and significantly increase the measurement rate. However, its range resolution is limited due to the soliton comb having only a few-GHz frequency sweep bandwidth. This paper presents a novel, to the best of our knowledge, method for realizing soliton transformation between different potential wells by gradually manipulating their depths in the propagation direction. The only requirements for such a transformation are that the gradient of the manipulated depth is smooth enough and the solitons in different potential wells are both in the regions of stability. The comparison of transformed solitons with the iterative ones obtained by the accelerated imaginary-time evolution method proves that our method is efficient and reliable. An interesting consequence is that in some complex potential wells in which it is difficult to find solitons by iterative numerical methods, stable solitons can be obtained by the transformation method. The controllable soliton transformation provides an excellent opportunity for all-optical switching, optical information processing, and other applications.

Optics-based platforms, using technologies such as silicon photonics and spatial light modulators, offer promising avenues for achieving this goal. However, training multiple programmable layers together with these physical systems poses challenges, as they are difficult to fully characterize and describe with differentiable functions, hindering the use of error backpropagation algorithm. First, a 4.45-kW PM fiber amplifier with a 3-dB linewidth of 0.08 nm and root mean square (rms) linewidth of 0.22 nm is achieved based on optimized phase modulation. Meanwhile, an up to 5.04-kW linearly polarized fiber laser with a relatively stable spectral bandwidth is achieved by effectively suppressing spectral broadening. At the maximum output power, the rms linewidth is 0.2 nm, the beam quality factor M 2 is less than 1.3, the polarization extinction ratio (PER) is 16.5 dB, and the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) is approximately 53 dB. Surface grating couplers are an important component for interfacing photonic integrated circuits with optical fibers. However, conventional coupler designs typically provide limited performance due to low directionality and poor fiber-to-grating field overlap. The efficiency can be improved by using non-uniform grating structures at the expense of small critical dimensions complicating the fabrication process. While uniform gratings can alleviate this constraint, they produce an exponentially decaying near-field with the Gaussian fiber mode overlap limited to a theoretical maximum of 80%. Counts were read on 29 October 2026 and will not be updated on this page, so a quoted rank stays verifiable. Full rules on the methodology page.
