Abstract The Tauc plot is a method originally developed to derive the optical gap of amorphous semiconductors such as amorphous germanium or silicon. By measuring the absorption coefficient α ( hν ) and plotting versus photon energy hν , a value for the optical gap ( Tauc gap ) is determined. In this way non‐direct optical transitions between approximately parabolic bands can be examined. In the last decades, a modification of this method for (poly‐) crystalline semiconductors has become popular to study direct and indirect interband transitions. For this purpose, ( ahν ) n ( n = , 2) is plotted against hν to determine a value of the electronic bandgap . Due to the ease of performing UV–vis measurements, this method has nowadays become a standard to analyze various (poly‐) crystalline solids, regardless of their different electronic structure. Although this leads partially to widely varying values of the respective bandgap of nominally identical materials, there is still no study that critically questions which peculiarities in the electronic structure prevent a use of the Tauc plot…

Abstract Metamaterial absorbers have been widely studied and continuously concerned owing to their excellent resonance features of ultra‐thin thickness, light‐weight, and high absorbance. Their applications, however, are typically restricted by the intrinsic dispersion of materials and strong resonant features of patterned arrays (mainly referring to narrow absorption bandwidth). It is, therefore essential to reassert the principles of building broadband metamaterial absorbers (BMAs). Herein, the research progress of BMAs from principles, design strategies, tunable properties to functional applications are comprehensively and deeply summarized. Physical principles behind broadband absorption are briefly discussed, typical design strategies in realizing broadband absorption are further emphasized, such as top‐down lithography, bottom‐up self‐assembly, and emerging 3D printing technology. Diversified active components choices, including optical response, temperature response, electrical response, magnetic response, mechanical response, and multi‐parameter responses, are reviewed in…

Abstract Metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) show captivating performances in many large‐scale applications including gas adsorption and separation, heat reallocation, water production, or remediation which can overcome important drawbacks of the conventionally used porous materials in the industry. This raises, therefore, the commercial interest in MOFs which brings the necessity to decrease the cost of their production, calling for the synthesis optimization from small‐scale to large‐scale. However, the commercial availability, yet very limited, is highly dependent on their production cost. Thus, to promote the commercial development and availability of MOFs, many steps can be taken. In this work, the state‐of‐art of the large‐scale production of MOFs can be first outlined, before discussing the criteria of greener MOF synthesis processes. Besides, a critical evaluation of the available synthesis routes for large‐scale production can be given, taking into consideration their cost, environmental impact, safety, and feasibility. Abstract Aqueous zinc ion batteries (AZIBs) with high safety, low cost, and eco‐friendliness advantages show great potential in large‐scale energy storage systems. However, their practical application is hindered by low Columbic efficiency and unstable zinc anode resulting from the side reactions and deterioration of zinc dendrites. Herein, tripropylene glycol (TG) is chosen as a dual‐functional organic electrolyte additive to improve the reversibility of AZIBs significantly. Importantly, ab initio molecular dynamics theoretical simulations and experiments such as in situ electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, and synchrotron radiation‐based in situ Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy confirm that TG participates in the solvation sheath of Zn 2+ , regulating overpotential and inhibiting side reactions; meanwhile, TG inhibits the deterioration of dendrites and modifies the direction of zinc deposition by constructing an adsorbed layer on the zinc anode. Consequently, a Zn‐MnO 2 full cell with TG electrolyte exhibited a specific capacity of 124.48 mAh g ‐1 after 1000 cycles at a…

Abstract The rational design of magnetic composites has great potential for electromagnetic (EM) absorption, particularly in the low‐frequency range of 2–8 GHz. However, the scalable synthesis of such magnetic absorbers with both high magnetic content and good dispersity remains challenging. In this study, a confined diffusion strategy is proposed to fabricate functional magnetic‐carbon hollow microspheres. Driven by the ferromagnetic enhanced Kirkendall diffusion effect, the in situ alloying of FeCo nanoparticles is tightly confined in carbon shells, effectively inhibiting magnetic agglomeration. Moreover, the core–shell FeCo–carbon nano‐units further assemble into dispersive microscale magnetic‐carbon Janus bulges on both the inner and outer surfaces of the hollow microsphere. The optimized hollow FeCo@C microspheres exhibit excellent low‐frequency EM wave absorption performance: the minimum reflection loss ( RL min ) is −35.9 dB, and the absorption bandwidth covers almost the entire C‐band. Systematic investigation reveals that the large size of the magnetic‐carbon integration,…

However, it remains challenging to regulate the surface and interfacial chemistry of MXene simultaneously. Herein, simultaneous modulation of Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene surface termination and layer spacing by alkali treatment are achieved. The electrical and electromagnetic properties of Ti 3 C 2 T x are investigated in detail with respect to KOH and ammonia concentration dependence. A high concentration of KOH caused the Ti 3 C 2 T x layer spacing to expand to 13.7 Å and the surface O/F ratio to increase to 33.84. Because of its weaker ionization effect, ammonia provides finer tuning compared to the drastic intercalation of KOH with a thorough sweeping of the F‐containing groups. Ti 3 C 2 T x is enriched with conductive ‐OH termination after ammonia treatment, which achieves an effective balance with the increased interlayer resistance. Therefore, NH 3 H 2 O‐Ti 3 C 2 T x achieves broad‐band impedance matching and exhibits an efficient microwave loss of −49.1 dB at a low thickness of 1.7…

Abstract Constructing MOF‐on‐MOF heterojunction with elaborate charge transfer mechanism and interface is a promising strategy for improving the photocatalytic properties of MOFs. Herein, a Step‐scheme (S‐scheme) MIL‐125‐NH2@CoFe Prussian blue analogue (PBA) heterojunction is reported for the first time. The MOF‐on‐MOF heterostructure exhibits a sandwich‐like morphology with hollow CoFe PBA nanocages selectively assembled on the top‐down surfaces of MIL‐125‐NH2 nanocakes. Experimental findings and theoretical simulation results reveal the formation of internal electric field via interfacial TiOCo bonds at the heterojunction, providing driving force and atomic transportation highway for accelerating the S‐scheme charge transfer and enhancing the redox performance. Contributed further by the hollow sandwich‐like structures with increased active site exposure, the designed MOF‐on‐MOF heterojunction exhibits significantly enhanced photocatalytic activity for degradation of various organic pollutants. Abstract Oxygen evolution reaction (OER) remains a bottleneck for electrocatalytic water‐splitting to generate hydrogen. However, the traditional adsorbed evolution mechanism (AEM) possesses sluggish reaction kinetics due to the scaling relationship, while lattice oxygen mechanism (LOM) triggers an unstable structure due to the escaping of lattice oxygen. Herein, a proof‐of‐concept Fe‐Co(OH) 2 /Fe 2 O 3 heterostructure is put forward, where Fe‐Co(OH) 2 following AEM can complete rapidly deprotonation process while Fe 2 O 3 following LOM can trigger O─O coupling step. Combining the theoretical and experimental investigation confirmed that the redistributed space‐charge of Fe‐Co(OH) 2 /Fe 2 O 3 junction can optimize synergistically adsorbed and lattice oxygen, the coupling mechanism of AEM and LOM can facilitate synchronously the OER activity and stability. Abstract Lithium‐ion batteries with their portability, high energy density, and reusability are frequently used in today's world. Under extreme conditions, lithium‐ion batteries leak, burn, and even explode. Therefore, improving the safety of lithium‐ion batteries has become a focus of attention. Researchers believe using a solid electrolyte instead of a liquid one can solve the lithium battery safety issue. Due to the low price, good processability and high safety of the solid polymer electrolytes, increasing attention have been paid to them. However, polymer electrolytes can also decompose and burn under extreme conditions. Moreover, lithium dendrites are formed continuously due to the uneven charge distribution on the surface of the lithium metal anode. A short circuit caused by a lithium dendrite can cause the battery to thermal runaway. As a result, the safety of polymer solid‐state batteries remains a challenge. In this review, the thermal runaway mechanism of the batteries is summarized, and the batteries abuse test standard is introduced. In addition, the recent works on the…

To tackle these challenges, a polyhydroxylated organic molecular additive, trehalose, is incorporated to refine the solvation structure and promote planar Zn deposition. Within solvation structure regions involving trehalose, the hydroxy groups participate in the reconstruction of hydrogen bond networks, which increases the overpotential for water decomposition reaction. Moreover, at the Zn metal–molecule interface, the chemisorption of trehalose onto the surface of the zinc anode enhances corrosion resistance and facilitates the deposition of zinc in a planar manner. The optimized electrolyte significantly improves Zn striping/plating reversibility and maintains stable potentials over 1600 h at 5 mA cm −2 with a cutoff capacity of 1 mA h cm −2 in symmetric cells. However, conventional flexible aqueous ZIBs undergo severe capacity loss at bending and subzero temperature states. Herein, an anti‐freezing hydrogel electrolyte based on zinc tetrafluoroborate (Zn(BF 4 ) 2 ) and polyacrylamide (PAM) is developed. Abstract Very recently, MXene‐based wearable hydrogels have emerged as promising candidates for epidermal sensors due to their tissue‐like softness and unique electrical and mechanical properties. However, it remains a challenge to achieve MXene‐based hydrogels with reliable sensing performance and prolonged service life, because MXene inevitably oxidizes in water‐containing system of the hydrogels. Herein, catechol‐functionalized poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA‐CA)‐based hydrogels is proposed to inhibit the oxidation of MXene, leading to rapid self‐healing and superior strain sensing behaviors. Sufficient interaction of hydrophobic catechol groups with the MXene surface reduces the oxidation‐accessible sites in the MXene for reaction with water and eventually suppresses the oxidation of MXene in the hydrogel. Furthermore, the PVA‐CA‐MXene hydrogel is demonstrated for use as a strain sensor for real‐time motion monitoring, such as detecting subtle human motions and handwriting. Abstract Breathable, flexible, and highly sensitive pressure sensors have drawn increasing attention due to their potential in wearable electronics for body‐motion monitoring, human‐machine interfaces, etc. However, current pressure sensors are usually assembled with polymer substrates or encapsulation layers, thus causing discomfort during wearing (i.e., low air/vapor permeability, mechanical mismatch) and restricting their applications. A breathable and flexible pressure sensor is reported with nonwoven fabrics as both the electrode (printed with MXene interdigitated electrode) and sensing (coated with MXene/silver nanowires) layers via a scalable screen‐printing approach. Benefiting from the multi‐layered porous structure, the sensor demonstrates good air permeability with high sensitivity (770.86–1434.89 kPa −1 ), a wide sensing range (0–100 kPa), fast response/recovery time (70/81 ms), and low detection limit (≈1 Pa). Abstract The S‐scheme heterojunctions have great potential for photocatalytic carbon dioxide reduction due to their unique carrier migration pathways, superior carrier separation efficiencies, and high redox capacities. However, the precise process of the oriented powerful electron transport remains a great challenge. Herein, an InOCd bond‐modulated S‐scheme heterojunction of In 2 O 3 /CdSe‐DETA is synthesized by a simple microwave‐assisted hydrothermal method for the accelerated photogenerated electron transfer. Meanwhile, the oxygen vacancies (Vo) of In 2 O 3 have an electron capture effect. Consequently, thanks to the synergistic effect of this In‐Vo‐In‐O‐Cd structural units at the interface, electrons are extracted and rapidly transferred to the surface‐active sites, which improves the electronic coupling of CO 2 . This finding precisely adjusts the electron transfer pathway and shortens the electron transfer distance. The synergistic effect of this chemical bond established in the S‐scheme heterostructure with oxygen vacancies in In 2 O 3 (Vo‐In 2 O 3 ) provides new insights…

Abstract Constructing an efficient alkaline hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) catalyst with low platinum (Pt) consumption is crucial for the cost reduction of energy devices, such as electrolyzers. Herein, nanoflower‐like carbon‐encapsulated CoNiPt alloy catalysts with composition segregation are designed by pyrolyzing morphology‐controlled and Pt‐proportion‐tuned metal–organic frameworks (MOFs). The optimized catalyst containing 15% CoNiPt NFs (15%: Pt mass percentage, NFs: nanoflowers) exhibits outstanding alkaline HER performance with a low overpotential of 25 mV at a current density of 10 mA cm −2 , far outperforming those of commercial Pt/C (47 mV) and the most advanced catalysts. Such superior activity originates from an integration of segregation alloy and Co‐O hybridization. The nanoflower‐like hierarchical structure guarantees the full exposure of segregation alloy sites. Density functional theory calculations suggest that the segregation alloy components not only promote water dissociation but also facilitate the hydrogen adsorption process, synergistically accelerating…

Herein, amorphous‐glass‐protected green/red CsPbX3 quantum dots (QDs) are prepared by elaborately optimizing glass structure, perovskite concentration, and in situ crystallization. PLQYs of green CsPbBr3@glass and red CsPbBr1.5I1.5@glass reach 94% and 78%, respectively, which are the highest ones of CsPbX3@glass composites reported so far and comparable to colloidal counterparts. Benefited from complete isolation of QDs from external environment by glass network, CsPbX3@glass can endure harsh commercial standard aging tests of 85 °C/85%RH and blue‐light‐irradiation, which are applied to construct white light‐emitting diodes (wLEDs) with high external quantum efficiency of 13.8% and…

Abstract Advanced sensation and actuation abilities of various living organisms in nature have inspired researchers to design bioinspired self‐sensing soft actuators. However, the majority of conventional soft actuators primarily possess actuation capabilities while lacking a real‐time sensing signal feedback. Here, a promising strategy is reported to develop highly stretchable and conductive hydrogels for bioinspired self‐sensing soft actuators, which integrate actuation and strain‐sensing functions into a single materials system. The conductive hydrogels are designed and fabricated by in situ copolymerization of amino‐functionalized MXene‐encapsulated liquid metal nanodroplets (LM@A‐MXene) and poly( N ‐isopropylacrylamide) hydrogels with controllable activated nanogels as nano‐cross‐linkers. The resulting hydrogel presents a compacted conducting network and highly porous microstructure, giving rise to robust integration of high conductivity, excellent strain sensitivity, broad stretchability, high stability, and fast response speed. Interestingly, the gradient network structure,…

Abstract Flexible triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs) with multifunctional sensing capabilities offer an elegant solution to address the growing energy supply challenges for wearable smart electronics. Herein, a highly stretchable and durable electrode for wearable TENG is developed using ZIF‐8 as a reinforcing nanofiller in a hydrogel with LiCl electrolyte. ZIF‐8 nanocrystals improve the hydrogel's mechanical properties by forming hydrogen bonds with copolymer chains, resulting in 2.7 times greater stretchability than pure hydrogel. The hydrogel electrode is encapsulated by microstructured silicone layers that act as triboelectric materials and prevent water loss from the hydrogel. Optimized ZIF‐8‐based hydrogel electrodes enhance the output performance of TENG through the dynamic balance of electric double layers (EDLs) during contact electrification. Thus, the as‐fabricated TENG delivers an excellent power density of 3.47 Wm – 2 , which is 3.2 times higher than pure hydrogel‐based TENG. Abstract The excited‐state tuning of luminescent metal–organic compounds has made great progress in the fields of optical imaging, photocatalysis, photodynamic therapy, light‐emitting devices, sensors, and so on. Although metal–organic compounds with high luminescence efficiency can be realized via enhanced molecular rigidity and heavy‐atom effect, their corresponding luminescence lifetimes are still limited on the order of a nanosecond to a millisecond, owing to the inherent competition between luminous efficiency and lifetime. Therefore, the advanced applications (i.e., persistent afterglow imaging, information security, anti‐counterfeiting, and smart materials, among others) related with long persistent luminescence (LPL, typically with the excited‐state lifetime larger than millisecond) are seriously hindered. This review gives a timely and systematic summary of metal–organic compounds for realizing room‐temperature phosphorescence (RTP)‐type and thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF)‐type LPL during last few years. Herein, a cationic covalent organic framework (COF) composed of positively charged organic units and weakly bonded fluoride ions (F − ) is introduced to modify the commercial polypropylene separator (COF−F@PP). It is found that the organic unit has abundant nanopores to homogenize the lithium ions (Li + ) flux and can interact with electrolyte solvent molecules to form a desolvation structure of Li + . In this study, Ti 3 C 2 T x ‐derived TiO 2 /Ti 3 C 2 T x photocatalysts are regulated by alkalization in the controlled KOH solution and calcination in different heating atmospheres to reveal the contribution of OVs, Ti 3+ , carbon species, and high work function titanium carbide. Carbon species and rich OVs co‐exist in TiO 2 /O‐Ti 3 C 2 (OV/C‐TT‐1K(N 2 )) which exhibit superior photocatalytic performance in tetracycline hydrochloride degradation with a kinetic constant of 0.0217 min −1 . Combined with experimental and DFT computational results, the broadened visible light response and desirable redox properties are caused by OVs and carbon…

Abstract NaF‐rich electrode–electrolyte interphases play crucial roles in determining the cycling stability of sodium metal batteries (SMBs) because of their electronic insulation and mechanical stability. In this work, perfluorobenzene (PFB) is proposed as the additive to contribute the formation of NaF‐rich solid electrolyte interphases (SEI). PFB at the periphery of the solvation layer can pull out a part of the EC with the lowest solvation energy by Van der Waals forces, thus allowing more to participate in the Na + solvation layer and form an anion‐aggregated solvation sheath, thus promoting the decomposition of to produce NaF. In addition, PFB has a higher highest occupied molecular orbital and lower lowest unoccupied molecular orbital energy level, which also preferentially decomposes to produce NaF at both electrodes. Benefiting from the intensified NaF ratio in SEI, the Na||Na symmetric cells with such an electrolyte achieves a superior cycling life over 350 h at 1 mA cm −2 , and the Na||Na 3 V 2 (PO 4 ) 2 O 2 F batteries also realize ultrahigh cycling performance with…

Abstract Hard carbon (HC) is widely regarded as the most promising anode material for sodium‐ion batteries (SIBs). For improving the sodium storage capacity of HC anode, current research primarily focuses on the high‐voltage slope region. Actually, increasing the storage capability in the low‐voltage plateau region is more important for enhancing the energy density of full cells. Therefore, in this study, HC anode with rich closed pore structure is designed and constructed with the help of carbon dots (CDs), and it is demonstrated that the presence of closed pore structure can provide more sodium storage sites in the plateau region, resulting in an obvious increase of sodium storage capacity. Moreover, the pore‐filling and intercalation mechanism for sodium storage in plateau region is revealed by in situ Raman spectroscopy and ex situ transmission electron microscopy (TEM). It is worth noting that the increase in capacity induced by closed pore‐filling is not accompanied by a decrease in initial coulombic efficiency (ICE), due to the fact that the introduction of closed pores does…

Abstract It is widely believed that excess/residual lead iodide (PbI 2 ) can affect the performance of perovskite solar cells . Moderate PbI 2 can enhance efficiency by passivating defects, while extremely active PbI 2 leads to non‐negligible hysteresis effects and reduces device stability. Although several efforts are made to investigate the role of excess PbI 2 , its impact is still underestimated. Recent advances further demonstrate the extraordinary potential of modifying excess PbI 2 ; however, a comprehensive study is required to obtain a deeper understanding. Herein, the important breakthroughs regarding excess PbI 2 are reviewed and the mechanism of excess PbI 2 in terms of efficiency and stability is rethought. In addition, the origins, verification, and regulation of residual PbI 2 are summarized.

Abstract Neuromorphic visual system with image perception, memory, and preprocessing functions is expected to simulate basic features of the human retina. Organic optoelectronic synaptic transistors emulating biological synapses may be promising candidates for constructing neural morphological visual system. However, the sensing wavelength range of organic optoelectronic synaptic transistors usually limits their potential in artificial multispectral visual perception. Here, retina‐inspired optoelectronic synaptic transistors that present broadband responses covering ultraviolet, visible, and near‐infrared regions are demonstrated, which leverage the wide‐range photoresponsive charge trapping layer and the heterostructure formed between PbS quantum dots and organic semiconductor. Simplified neuromorphic visual arrays are developed to simulate comprehensive image perception, memory, and preprocessing functions. Benefitting from the flexibility of the charge trapping and organic semiconductor layers, a flexible neuromorphic visual array can be fabricated, having an ultralow power…

Abstract It is a great challenge to design active and durable oxygen evolution reaction (OER) electrocatalysts for proton exchange membrane (PEM) electrolyzer due to the high dissolution of electrocatalysts in acidic solution. Herein, the Nd‐doped RuO2 (Nd0.1RuOx) is developed for enhanced oxygen evolution in 0.5 m H2SO4 solution with an overpotential of 211 mV to achieve 10 mA cm−2. The theoretical calculation reveals that the improved activity of Nd0.1RuOx is due to the moderate decrease of d‐band center energy, which balances the adsorption and desorption of oxygen intermediates. Moreover, the formation of more high valence state Ru4+ in Nd0.1RuOx is beneficial to the chemical stability of Ru species during the OER process, indicating that the introduction of Nd can effectively suppress the dissolution of Ru in acidic electrolytes. In addition, the PEM electrolyzer using Nd0.1RuOx/CC as the anode can be operated at 10 mA cm−2 stably for 50 h. This study sheds new light on the design of the OER catalysts in acid by engineering the electronic structure of RuO2.

Abstract Adsorption‐photocatalysis technology based on covalent organic frameworks (COFs) offers an alternative method for advancing the field of uranium extraction from seawater. When determining the photocatalytic activity of COFs, the binding energy of excitons ( E b ) functions is the decisive factor. Nevertheless, the majority of reported COFs have a large E b , which seriously restricts their application in the field of photocatalysis. Using a practical π‐skeleton engineering strategy, the current study synthesizes three donor‐acceptor olefin‐linked COFs containing amidoxime units in an effort to minimize E b . Theoretical and experimental results reveal that the construction of planar and continuous π ‐electron delocalization channels can significantly reduce E b and promote the separation of electron‐hole pairs, thereby enhancing the photocatalytic activities. Moreover, the E b of the TTh‐COF‐AO with a planar π ‐skeleton donor is significantly reduced, and exhibits a substantially smaller E b (38.4 meV). Under visible light irradiation, a high photo‐enhanced uranium…
