Abstract In this review, the factors influencing the power conversion efficiency (PCE) of perovskite solar cells (PSCs) is emphasized. The PCE of PSCs has remarkably increased from 3.8% to 23.7%, but on the other hand, poor stability is one of the main facets that creates a huge barrier in the commercialization of PSCs. Herein, a concise overview of the current efforts to enhance the stability of PSCs is provided; moreover, the degradation causes and mechanisms are summarized. The strategies to improve device stability are portrayed in terms of structural effects, a photoactive layer, hole‐ and electron‐transporting layers, electrode materials, and device encapsulation. Last but not least, the economic feasibility of PSCs is also vividly discussed.

Abstract Adhering hydrogels to various materials is fundamental to a large array of established and emerging applications. The last few years have seen transformative advances in achieving strong hydrogel adhesion, which is a supramolecular phenomenon. Two adherends connect through covalent bonds, noncovalent complexes, polymer chains, polymer networks, or nanoparticles. Separating the adherends dissipates energy through cascading events across length scales, including bond cleavage, chain retraction, and bulk hysteresis. A unifying principle has emerged: strong hydrogel adhesion requires the synergy of chemistry of bonds, topology of connection, and mechanics of dissipation. This synergy characterizes hydrogel adhesion to various materials (another hydrogel, tissue, elastomer, plastic, metal, glass, and ceramic) in various operations (cast, coat, print, attach, pierce, and glue). Strong adhesion can be made permanent, reversible, degradable, or on‐demand detachable. The development of hydrogel adhesion and its applications adheres disciplines, discovers interlinks, and forges…

Abstract Conductive hydrogels are attracting tremendous interest in the field of flexible and wearable soft strain sensors because of their great potential in electronic skins, and personalized healthcare monitoring. However, conventional conductive hydrogels using pure water as the dispersion medium will inevitably freeze at subzero temperatures, resulting in the diminishment of their conductivity and mechanical properties; meanwhile, even at room temperature, such hydrogels suffer from the inevitable loss of water due to evaporation, which leads to a poor shelf‐life. Herein, an antifreezing, self‐healing, and conductive MXene nanocomposite organohydrogel (MNOH) is developed by immersing MXene nanocomposite hydrogel (MNH) in ethylene glycol (EG) solution to replace a portion of the water molecules. The MNH is prepared from the incorporation of the conductive MXene nanosheet networks into hydrogel polymer networks. The as‐prepared MNOH exhibits an outstanding antifreezing property (−40 °C), long‐lasting moisture retention (8 d), excellent self‐healing capability, and superior…

Abstract The microwave absorption (MA) performance of carbon materials is severely hindered by their drawbacks of lacking magnetic loss ability and mismatched electromagnetic impedance. In this work, utilizing sustainable biomass kapok as a template, the hierarchically tubular C/Co nanoparticle composite is rationally constructed to acquire the enhanced MA performance for the first time. The fruit‐tree‐like hierarchical structure is composed from a “trunk” of kapok‐derived carbon microtubes, a “branch” of entangled carbon nanotubes, and “fruit” of Co nanoparticles embedded in the nanotubes. Such a hierarchically tubular structure offers the composite: i) a submillimeter‐scale 3D magnetic coupling network and reinforced magnetic loss ability, ii) a hierarchical dielectric carbon network, iii) better matched impedance, confirmed by the off‐axis electron holography and micromagnetic simulation. Accordingly, the as‐prepared hierarchically tubular carbon composite demonstrates impressive MA performance, with a maximum reflection loss of as much as −52.3 dB and a broad absorption…

Abstract The manganese dissolution leading to sharp capacity decline as well as the sluggish reaction kinetic are still major issues for manganese‐based materials as aqueous zinc‐ion batteries (ZIBs) cathodes. Here, a potassium‐ion‐stabilized and oxygen‐defect K0.8Mn8O16 is reported as a high‐energy‐density and durable cathode for neutral aqueous ZIBs. A new insight into suppressing manganese dissolution via incorporation of K+ ions to intrinsically stabilize the Mn‐based cathodes is provided. A comprehensive study suggests that oxygen defects improve electrical conductivity and open the MnO6 polyhedron walls for ion diffusion, which plays a critical role in the fast reaction kinetics and capacity improvement of K0.8Mn8O16. In addition, direct evidence for the mechanistic details of simultaneous insertion and conversion reaction based on H+‐storage mechanism is demonstrated. As expected, a significant energy output of 398 W h kg−1 (based on the mass of cathode) and an impressive durability over 1000 cycles with no obvious capacity fading are obtained. Abstract Simulating biological synapses with electronic devices is a re‐emerging field of research. It is widely recognized as the first step in hardware building brain‐like computers and artificial intelligent systems. Thus far, different types of electronic devices have been proposed to mimic synaptic functions. Among them, transistor‐based artificial synapses have the advantages of good stability, relatively controllable testing parameters, clear operation mechanism, and can be constructed from a variety of materials. In addition, they can perform concurrent learning, in which synaptic weight update can be performed without interrupting the signal transmission process. Synergistic control of one device can also be implemented in a transistor‐based artificial synapse, which opens up the possibility of developing robust neuron networks with significantly fewer neural elements. These unique features of transistor‐based artificial synapses make them more suitable for emulating synaptic functions than other types of devices. Abstract Dielectric materials are greatly desired for electromagnetic absorption applications. Lots of research shows that conduction loss and polarization are two of the most important factors determining complex permittivity. However, the detailed dissipation mechanisms for the improved microwave absorption performance are often based on semiempirical rules, lacking practical data relationships between conduction loss/polarization and dielectric behaviors. Here, a strategy of introducing point defects is used to understand such underlying relationships, where polarizability and conductivity are adjustable by manipulating oxygen deficiency or heteroatoms. Based on first principles calculations and the applied oxygen‐deficient strategy, dielectric polarization is shown to be dominant in determining the permittivity behaviors in semiconductors. Meanwhile, the presented nitrogen doping strategy shows that conduction loss is dominant in determining the permittivity behavior in graphitized carbon materials. The validity of the methods for using point defects to explore the underlying…

Abstract Exhaustive attempts are made in recent decades to improve the performance of thermoelectric materials that are utilized for waste heat‐to‐electricity conversion. Energy filtering of charge carriers is directed toward enhancing the material thermopower. This paper focuses on the theoretical concepts, experimental evidence, and the authors' view of energy filtering in the context of thermoelectric materials. Recent studies suggest that not all materials experience this effect with the same intensity. Although this effect theoretically demonstrates improvement of the thermopower, applying it poses certain constraints, which demands further research. Predicated on data documented in literature, the unusual dependence of the thermopower and conductivity upon charge carrier concentrations can be altered through the energy filtering approach. Upon surmounting the physical constraints discussed in this article, thermoelectric materials research may gain a new direction to enhance the power factor and thermoelectric figure of merit.

Herein, PtCu 3 nanocages are first reported as acting as a sonosensitizer with highly efficient ROS generation under ultrasound irradiation. Surprisingly, PtCu 3 nanocages can act as another kind of nanozyme, mimicking glutathione peroxidase (GSH‐Px), which plays an important role in accelerating GSH depletion by oxidizing molecules, further weakening the capacity of tumor cells scavenging ROS by GSH. Both in vitro and in vivo studies demonstrate that PtCu 3 nanocages perform well in reducing GSH level for CDT‐enhanced SDT. Abstract Highly efficient non‐noble metal electrocatalysts are vital for metal–air batteries and fuel cells. Herein, a noble‐metal–free single‐atom Fe‐N x‐C electrocatalyst is synthesized by incorporating Fe‐Phen complexes into the nanocages in situ during the growth of ZIF‐8, followed by pyrolysis at 900 °C under inert atmosphere. Fe‐Phen species provide both Fe2+ and the organic ligand (Phen) simultaneously, which play significant roles in preparing single‐atom catalysts. The obtained Fe‐Nx‐C exhibits a half‐wave potential of 0.91 V for the oxygen reduction reaction, higher than that of commercial Pt/C (0.82 V). As a cathode catalyst for primary zinc–air batteries (ZABs), the battery shows excellent electrochemical performances in terms of the high open‐circuit voltage (OCV) of 1.51 V and a high power density of 96.4 mW cm−2. The rechargeable ZAB with Fe‐Nx‐C catalyst and the alkaline electrolyte shows a remarkable cycling performance for 300 h with an initial round‐trip efficiency of 59.6%. Furthermore, the rechargeable all‐solid‐state ZABs with the Fe‐Nx‐C catalyst show high OCV…

Abstract Until now there has been no fundamental theory applicable for biodegradable metals (BMs). First, this paper optimizes the definition of BMs given in 2014. Second, the dual criteria of biodegradability and biocompatibility are proposed for BMs, and all metallic elements in the periodic table with accessible data are screened on the basis of these criteria. Regarding biodegradability, electrode potential, reactivity series, galvanic series, Pilling–Bedworth ratio, and Pourbaix diagrams are all adopted as parameters to classify the degradable and nondegradable nature of a material, especially in a physiological environment. Considering the biocompatibility at different levels, cellular biocompatibility, tissue biocompatibility, and human/clinical related biocompatibility parameters are put forward to comprehensively evaluate the biosafety of BMs. Third, for the material design of BMs, mechanical properties, chemical properties, physical properties and biological properties should be considered and balanced to guarantee that the degradation behavior of BMs match well with a…

However, the low‐stiffness nature of the constituent materials makes soft robotic systems incompetent in tasks requiring relatively high load capacity. Despite recent attempts to develop stiffness‐tunable soft actuators by employing variable stiffness materials and structures, the reported stiffness‐tunable actuators generally suffer from limitations including slow responses, small deformations, and difficulties in fabrication with microfeatures. This work presents a paradigm to design and manufacture fast‐response, stiffness‐tunable (FRST) soft actuators via hybrid multimaterial 3D printing. The integration of a shape memory polymer layer into the fully printed actuator body enhances its stiffness by up to 120 times without sacrificing flexibility and adaptivity. The printed Joule‐heating circuit and fluidic cooling microchannel enable fast heating and cooling rates and allow the FRST actuator to complete a softening–stiffening cycle within 32 s. The photo‐electrochemical experiments demonstrate that the charge separation and carrier transfer are more efficient in the 3D‐ZIS with rich VZn. Of note, for the first time, it is found that VZn can decrease the carrier transport activation energy (CTAE), from 1.14 eV for Bulk‐ZIS (Bulk ZnIn2S4) to 0.93 eV for 3D‐ZIS, which may provide a feasible platform for further understanding the mechanism of photocatalytic CO2 reduction. In situ Fourier transform infrared (FT‐IR) results reveal that the presence of rich VZn ensures CO2 chemical activation, promoting single‐electron reduction of CO2 to CO2−. In addition, in situ FT‐IR and CO2 temperature programmed desorption results show that VZn can promote the formation of surface hydroxyl. To the best of current knowledge, there are no reports on the photoreduction of CO2 simply by virtue of 3D‐ZIS with VZn and few literature reports on the photocatalytic reduction of CO2 concerned with CTAE. Similarly, considerations on the theoretical approaches used in the energy storage field are provided, as they can become the key tool for the design of the next generation LSBs. Afterward, the state of the art of LSBs technology is presented…

Abstract The excellent energy‐storage performance of ceramic capacitors, such as high‐power density, fast discharge speed, and the ability to operate over a broad temperature range, gives rise to their wide applications in different energy‐storage devices. In this work, the (Pb 0.98 La 0.02 )(Zr 0.55 Sn 0.45 ) 0.995 O 3 (PLZS) antiferroelectric (AFE) ceramics are prepared via a unique rolling machine approach. The field‐induced multiphase transitions are observed in polarization–electric field (P–E) hysteresis loops. All the PLZS AFE ceramics possess high energy‐storage densities and discharge efficiency (above 80%) with different sintering temperatures. Of particular significance is that an ultrahigh recoverable energy‐storage density of 10.4 J cm ‐3 and a high discharge efficiency of 87% are achieved at 40 kV mm ‐1 for PLZS ceramic with a thickness of 0.11 mm, sintered at 1175 °C, which are by far the highest values ever reported in bulk ceramics. Moreover, the corresponding ceramics exhibit a superior discharge current density of 1640 A cm ‐2 and ultrafast discharge speed (75 ns…

How to read this list

The cohort is every article, review and book chapter OpenAlex attributes to Advanced Functional Materials with publication year 2019, excluding retracted works and paratext such as editorials and errata. The top 50 by citation count are listed; the percentile is the rank divided by the cohort size. 50 of the 50 entries have an abstract in OpenAlex. Counts were read on 29 October 2026 and will not be updated on this page, so a quoted rank stays verifiable. Full rules on the methodology page.
