A strategy to prepare flexible and conductive MXene/graphene (reduced graphene oxide, rGO) supercapacitor electrodes by using electrostatic self‐assembly between positively charged rGO modified with poly(diallyldimethylammonium chloride) and negatively charged titanium carbide MXene nanosheets is presented. After electrostatic assembly, rGO nanosheets are inserted in‐between MXene layers. As a result, the self‐restacking of MXene nanosheets is effectively prevented, leading to a considerably increased interlayer spacing. Accelerated diffusion of electrolyte ions enables more electroactive sites to become accessible. The freestanding MXene/rGO‐5 wt% electrode displays a volumetric capacitance of 1040 F cm −3 at a scan rate of 2 mV s −1 , an impressive rate capability with 61% capacitance retention at 1 V s −1 and long cycle life. Moreover, the fabricated binder‐free symmetric supercapacitor shows an ultrahigh volumetric energy density of 32.6 Wh L −1 , which is among the highest values reported for carbon and MXene based materials in aqueous electrolytes. Lithium (Li) metal has been considered as an important substitute for the graphite anode to further boost the energy density of Li‐ion batteries. However, Li dendrite growth during Li plating/stripping causes safety concern and poor lifespan of Li metal batteries (LMB). Herein, fluoroethylene carbonate (FEC) additives are used to form a LiF‐rich solid electrolyte interphase (SEI). The FEC‐induced SEI layer is compact and stable, and thus beneficial to obtain a uniform morphology of Li deposits. This uniform and dendrite‐free morphology renders a significantly improved Coulombic efficiency of 98% within 100 cycles in a Li | Cu half‐cell. When the FEC‐protected Li metal anode matches a high‐loading LiNi 0.5 Co 0.2 Mn 0.3 O 2 (NMC) cathode (12 mg cm −2 ), a high initial capacity of 154 mAh g −1 (1.9 mAh cm −2 ) at 180.0 mA g −1 is obtained. This LMB with conversion‐type Li metal anode and intercalation‐type NMC cathode affords an emerging energy storage system to probe the energy chemistry of Li metal protection and demonstrates the material engineering of batteries with very high…

Abstract Conductive hydrogels are a promising class of materials to design bioelectronics for new technological interfaces with human body, which are required to work for a long‐term or under extreme environment. Traditional hydrogels are limited in short‐term usage under room temperature, as it is difficult to retain water under cold or hot environment. Inspired by the antifreezing/antiheating behaviors from nature, and based on mussel chemistry, an adhesive and conductive hydrogel is developed with long‐lasting moisture lock‐in capability and extreme temperature tolerance, which is formed in a binary‐solvent system composed of water and glycerol. Polydopamine (PDA)‐decorated carbon nanotubes (CNTs) are incorporated into the hydrogel, which assign conductivity to the hydrogel and serve as nanoreinforcements to enhance the mechanical properties of the hydrogel. The catechol groups on PDA and viscous glycerol endow the hydrogel with high tissue adhesiveness. Particularly, the hydrogel is thermal tolerant to maintain all the properties under extreme wide tempreature spectrum (−20 or…

Lithium‐metal batteries are of particular interest for next‐generation electrical energy storage because of their high energy density on both volumetric and gravimetric bases. Effective strategies to stabilize the Li‐metal anode are the prerequisite for the progress of these exceptional storage technologies, such as Li–S and Li–O2 batteries. Various challenges, such as uneven Li electrodeposition, anode volume expansion, and dendrite‐induced short‐circuit have hindered the practical application of rechargeable Li‐metal batteries. Herein, a one‐step facile and cost‐effective strategy for stabilizing lithium‐metal batteries via 3D porous Cu current collector/Li‐metal composite anode is reported. The porous structure of the composite electrode provides a “cage” for the redeposition of “hostless” lithium and accommodates the anode volume expansion during cycling. Compared with planar Cu foil, its high specific surface area favors the electrochemical reaction kinetics and lowers the local current density along the anode. It leads to low interfacial resistance and stabilizes the Li…

Lithium metal is considered a “Holy Grail” of anode materials for high‐energy‐density batteries. However, both dendritic lithium deposition and infinity dimension change during long‐term cycling have extremely restricted its practical applications for energy storage devices. Here, a thermal infusion strategy for prestoring lithium into a stable nickel foam host is demonstrated and a composite anode is achieved. In comparison with the bare lithium, the composite anode exhibits stable voltage profiles (200 mV at 5.0 mA cm−2) with a small hysteresis beyond 100 cycles in carbonate‐based electrolyte, as well as high rate capability, significantly reduced interfacial resistance, and small polarization in a full‐cell battery with Li4Ti5O12 or LiFePO4 as counter electrode. More importantly, in addition to the fact that lithium is successfully confined in the metallic nickel foam host, uniform lithium plating/stripping is achieved with a low dimension change (merely ≈3.1%) and effective inhibition of dendrite formation. The mechanism for uniform lithium stripping/plating behavior is…

The device shows an ultrahigh responsivity (9.7 mA W −1 ) at 251 nm with a high UV/visible rejection ratio ( R 251 nm / R 400 nm ) of 6.9 × 10 2 under zero bias. The self‐powered device has a fast response speed with rise time shorter than 100 µs and decay time of 900 µs, respectively. The ultrahigh responsivity, high UV/visible rejection ratio, and fast response speed make it highly suitable in practical self‐powered solar‐blind detection. Abstract Designing a highly active electrocatalyst with optimal stability at low cost is must and non‐negotiable if large‐scale implementations of fuel cells are to be fully realized. Zeolitic‐imidazolate frameworks (ZIFs) offer rich platforms to design multifunctional materials due to their flexibility and ultrahigh surface area. Herein, an advanced Co–Nx/C nanorod array derived from 3D ZIF nanocrystals with superior electrocatalytic activity and stability toward oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) compared to commercial Pt/C and IrO2, respectively, is synthesized. Remarkably, as a bifunctional catalyst (Ej = 10 (OER) − E1/2 (ORR) ≈ 0.65 V), it further displays high performance of Zn–air batteries with high cycling stability even at a high current density. Such supercatalytic properties are largely attributed to the synergistic effect of the chemical composition, high surface area, and abundant active sites of the nanorods. The activity origin is clarified through post oxygen reduction X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy analysis and density functional…

Abstract Currently, developing nonprecious‐metal catalysts to replace Pt‐based electrocatalysts in fuel cells has become a hot topic because the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) in fuel cells often requires platinum, a precious metal, as a catalyst, which is one of the major hurdles for commercialization of the fuel cells. Recently, the newly emerging metal‐organic frameworks (MOFs) have been widely used as self‐sacrificed precursors/templates to fabricate heteroatom‐doped porous carbons. Here, the recent progress of MOF‐derived, heteroatom‐doped porous carbon catalysts for ORR in fuel cells is systematically reviewed, and the synthesis strategies for using different MOF precursors to prepare heteroatom‐doped porous carbon catalysts, including the direct carbonization of MOFs, MOF and heteroatom source mixture carbonization, and MOF‐based composite carbonization are summarized. The emphasis is placed on the precursor design of MOF‐derived metal‐free catalysts and transition‐metal‐doped carbon catalysts because the MOF precursors often determine the microstructures of the derived…

Abstract A series of poly(arylene piperidinium)s (PAPipQs) devoid of any alkali‐sensitive aryl ether bonds or benzylic sites are prepared and studied as anion exchange membranes (AEMs) for alkaline fuel cells. First, the excellent alkaline stability of the model compound 4,4‐diarylpiperidinium is confirmed. Medium molecular weight poly(arylene piperidine)s are then synthesized in polycondensations of N ‐methyl‐4‐piperidone and either bi‐ or terphenyl via superelectrophilic activation in triflic acid. Film‐forming PAPipQs are subsequently prepared in Menshutkin reactions with methyl, butyl, hexyl, and octyl halides, respectively. AEMs based on poly(terphenyl dimethylpiperidinium) show the best performance with no structural degradation detectable by 1 H NMR spectroscopy after storage in 2 m aq. It aims at giving the reader an overview about these two current research fields, i.e., MOF and PDT, and at highlighting the potential synergistic effect that could result from their association. After describing the general photophysics and photochemistry that underlie PDT, the relationship between photosensitizer (PS) properties and PDT requirements is discussed throughout the PSs historical development. This development reveals the advantages of using nanotechnology platforms for the creation of the ideal PS and leads us to define the fourth generation of PSs, which includes NPs built from the PS itself as porphysomes or PS‐based MOF NPs. Especially, the precise spatial control over the PS assembly into well‐defined MOF NPs, which keeps the PS in its monomeric form and prevents PS self‐quenching, appears as a notable feature to solve PS solubility and aggregation issues and therefore improves the PDT efficiency. 3D printing of renewable building blocks like cellulose nanocrystals offers an attractive pathway for fabricating sustainable structures. Here, viscoelastic inks composed of anisotropic cellulose nanocrystals (CNC) that enable patterning of 3D objects by direct ink writing are designed and formulated. These concentrated inks are composed of CNC particles suspended in either water or a photopolymerizable monomer solution. The shear‐induced alignment of these anisotropic building blocks during printing is quantified by atomic force microscopy, polarized light microscopy, and 2D wide‐angle X‐ray scattering measurements. Akin to the microreinforcing effect in plant cell walls, the alignment of CNC particles during direct writing yields textured composites with enhanced stiffness along the printing direction. The observations serve as an important step forward toward the development of sustainable materials for 3D printing of cellular architectures with tailored mechanical properties.

Here, TiO 2 shell coated CsPbBr 3 core/shell NCs are synthesized through the encapsulation of colloidal CsPbBr 3 NCs with titanium precursor, followed by calcination at 300 °C. The nearly monodispersed CsPbBr 3 /TiO 2 core/shell NCs show excellent water stability for at least three months with the size, structure, morphology, and optical properties remaining identical, which represent the most water‐stable inorganic shell passivated perovskite NCs reported to date. In addition, TiO 2 shell coating can effectively suppress anion exchange and photodegradation, therefore dramatically improving the chemical stability and photostability of the core CsPbBr 3 NCs. There exist tremendous needs for sustainable storage solutions for intermittent renewable energy sources, such as solar and wind energy. Thus, systems based on Earth‐abundant elements deserve much attention. Potassium‐ion batteries represent a promising candidate because of the abundance of potassium resources. As for the choices of anodes, graphite exhibits encouraging potassium‐ion storage properties; however, it suffers limited rate capability and poor cycling stability. Here, nongraphitic carbons as K‐ion anodes with sodium carboxymethyl cellulose as the binder are systematically investigated. Compared to hard carbon and soft carbon, a hard–soft composite carbon with 20 wt% soft carbon distributed in the matrix phase of hard carbon microspheres exhibits highly amenable performance: high capacity, high rate capability, and very stable long‐term cycling. In contrast, pure hard carbon suffers limited rate capability, while the capacity of pure soft carbon fades more rapidly.

MoSe2 grown on N,P‐co‐doped carbon nanosheets is synthesized by a solvothermal reaction followed with a high‐temperature calcination. This composite has an interlayer spacing of MoSe2 expanded to facilitate sodium‐ion diffusion, MoSe2 immobilized on carbon nanosheets to improve charge‐transfer kinetics, and N and P incorporated into carbon to enhance its interaction with active species upon cycling. These features greatly improve the electrochemical performance of this composite, as compared to all the controls. It presents a specific capacity of 378 mAh g−1 after 1000 cycles at 0.5 A g−1, corresponding to 87% of the capacity at the second cycle. Ex situ Raman spectra and high‐resolution transmission electron microscopy images confirm that it is element Se, rather than MoSe2, formed after the charging process. Abstract Lead halide perovskite quantum dots (QDs) possess color‐tunable and narrow‐band emissions and are very promising for lighting and display applications, but they suffer from lead toxicity and instability. Although lead‐free Bi‐based and Sn‐based perovskite QDs (CsSnX3, Cs2SnX6, and (CH3NH3)3Bi2X9) are reported, they all show low photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) and poor stability. Here, the synthesis of Cs3Bi2Br9 perovskite QDs with high PLQY and excellent stability is reported. Via a green and facile process using ethanol as the antisolvent, as‐synthesized Cs3Bi2Br9 QDs show a blue emission at 410 nm with a PLQY up to 19.4%. The whole series of Cs3Bi2X9 (X = Cl, Br, and I) QDs by mixing precursors can cover the photoluminescence emission range from 393 to 545 nm. Furthermore, Cs3Bi2Br9 QDs show excellent photostability and moisture stability due to the all‐inorganic nature and the surface passivation by BiOBr, which enables the one‐pot synthesis of Cs3Bi2Br9 QD/silica composite. A lead‐free perovskite white light‐emitting diode is fabricated by simply combining the…

Abstract The exploring of catalysts with high‐efficiency and low‐cost for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is one of the key issues for many renewable energy systems including fuel cells, metal–air batteries, and water splitting. Despite several decades pursuing, bifunctional oxygen catalysts with high catalytic performance at low‐cost, especially the one that could be easily scaled up for mass production are still missing and highly desired. Herein, a hybrid catalyst with NiCo alloy nanoparticles decorated on N‐doped carbon nanofibers is synthesized by a facile electrospinning method and postcalcination treatment. The hybrid catalyst NiCo@N‐C 2 exhibits outstanding ORR and OER catalytic performances, which is even surprisingly superior to the commercial Pt/C and RuO 2 catalysts, respectively. The synergetic effects between alloy nanoparticles and the N‐doped carbon fiber are considered as the main contributions for the excellent catalytic activities, which include decreasing the intrinsic and charge transfer resistances, increasing CC,…

This study reports the design and fabrication of ultrathin MoS2 nanosheets@metal organic framework‐derived N‐doped carbon nanowall array hybrids on flexible carbon cloth (CC@CN@MoS2) as a free‐standing anode for high‐performance sodium ion batteries. When evaluated as an anode for sodium ion battery, the as‐fabricated CC@CN@MoS2 electrode exhibits a high capacity (653.9 mA h g−1 of the second cycle and 619.2 mA h g−1 after 100 cycles at 200 mA g−1), excellent rate capability, and long cycling life stability (265 mA h g−1 at 1 A g−1 after 1000 cycles). The excellent electrochemical performance can be attributed to the unique 2D hybrid structures, in which the ultrathin MoS2 nanosheets with expanded interlayers can provide shortened ion diffusion paths and favorable Na+ insertion/extraction space, and the porous N‐doped carbon nanowall arrays on flexible carbon cloth are able to improve the conductivity and maintain the structural integrity. Abstract Hydrogels with high strength and ductility are normally prepared from synthetic polymers, and most protein‐based hydrogels are soft and brittle. Here, a strong, ductile gelatin hydrogel is prepared by simply soaking a virgin gelatin gel in an ammonium sulfate solution. The polymer chains in the covalent, crosslink‐free network can freely move to homogeneously distribute stress, and more importantly, the highly kosmotropic ammonium sulfate ions greatly enhance the hydrophobic interactions and chain bundling within the gelatin gels. As a result, the treated hydrogels have an extraordinary ultimate strength (compressive and tensile strains of over 99% and 500%, respectively, and stresses of 12 and 3 MPa) superior to that of common protein gels. The physical crosslinks introduced by the Hofmeister effect can rapidly absorb energy and sustain large deformations via decrosslinking and dissociation, which result in energy dissipation and antifatigue properties. The effects of the gelatin and (NH 4 ) 2 SO 4 concentrations on the hydrogel mechanics are evaluated, and the possible…

Through combining a collapsed thermoresponsive graphene oxide‐poly( N ‐isopropylacrylamide) (GO‐PNIPAM) hydrogel layer with a pH‐responsive perylene bisimide‐functionalized hyperbranched polyethylenimine (PBI‐HPEI) hydrogel layer via macroscopic supramolecular assembly, a bilayer hydrogel is obtained that can be tailored and reswells to form a 3D hydrogel actuator. The actuator can undergo complex shape deformation caused by the PNIPAM outside layer, then the PBI‐HPEI hydrogel inside layer can be unfolded to trigger the on–off switch of the pH‐responsive fluorescence under the green light irradiation. In situ hydrogels have attracted considerable attention in tissue engineering because of their minimal invasiveness and ability to match the irregular tissue defects. However, hydrous physiological environments and the high level of moisture in hydrogels severely hamper binding to the target tissue and easily cause wound infection, thereby limiting the effectiveness in wound care management. Abstract The number of catalytically reactive sites and their intrinsic electrocatalytic activity strongly affect the performance of electrocatalysts. Recently, there are growing concerns about layered double hydroxides (LDHs) for oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Exfoliating LDHs is an effective method to increase the reactive sites, however, a traditional liquid phase exfoliation method is usually very labor‐intensive and time‐consuming. On the other hand, proper heteroelement doping and edge engineering are helpful to tune the intrinsic activity of reactive sites. In this work, bulk CoFe LDHs are successfully exfoliated into ultrathin CoFe LDHs nanosheets by nitrogen plasma. Meanwhile, nitrogen doping and defects are introduced into exfoliated ultrathin CoFe LDHs nanosheets. The number of reactive sites can be increased efficiently by the formation of ultrathin CoFe LDHs nanosheets, the nitrogen dopant alters the surrounding electronic arrangement of reactive site facilitating the adsorption of OER intermediates, and the electrocatalytic activity of reactive sites can be further…

Poly(3,4‐ethylenedioxythiophene):polystyrene sulfonate (PEDOT:PSS) is the most studied and explored mixed ion‐electron conducting polymer system. PEDOT:PSS is commonly included as an electroactive conductor in various organic devices, e.g., supercapacitors, displays, transistors, and energy‐converters. In spite of its long‐term use as a material for storage and transport of charges, the fundamentals of its bulk capacitance remain poorly understood. Generally, charge storage in supercapacitors is due to formation of electrical double layers or redox reactions, and it is widely accepted that PEDOT:PSS belongs to the latter category. Herein, experimental evidence and theoretical modeling results are reported that significantly depart from this commonly accepted picture. By applying a two‐phase, 2D modeling approach it is demonstrated that the major contribution to the capacitance of the two‐phase PEDOT:PSS originates from electrical double layers formed along the interfaces between nanoscaled PEDOT‐rich and PSS‐rich interconnected grains that comprises two phases of the bulk of…

Luminescent materials with thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) can harvest singlet and triplet excitons to afford high electroluminescence (EL) efficiencies for organic light‐emitting diodes (OLEDs). However, TADF emitters generally have to be dispersed into host matrices to suppress emission quenching and/or exciton annihilation, and most doped OLEDs of TADF emitters encounter a thorny problem of swift efficiency roll‐off as luminance increases. To address this issue, in this study, a new tailor‐made luminogen (dibenzothiophene‐benzoyl‐9,9‐dimethyl‐9,10‐dihydroacridine, DBT‐BZ‐DMAC) with an unsymmetrical structure is synthesized and investigated by crystallography, theoretical calculation, spectroscopies, etc. It shows aggregation‐induced emission, prominent TADF, and interesting mechanoluminescence property. The electrospun polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF)–silver nanowire (AgNW) composite and nylon nanofibers are utilized in the TENGs as the top and bottom triboelectric layers, respectively. The electrospinning process facilitates uniaxial stretching of the polymer chains, which enhances the formation of the highly oriented crystalline β‐phase that forms the most polar crystalline phase of PVDF. The addition of AgNWs further promotes the β‐phase crystal formation by introducing electrostatic interactions between the surface charges of the nanowires and the dipoles of the PVDF chains. The extent of β‐phase formation and the resulting variations in the surface charge potential upon the addition of nanowires are systematically analyzed using X‐ray diffraction (XRD) and Kelvin probe force microscopy techniques. Transition‐metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs) are an important class of two‐dimensional (2D) layered materials for electronic and optoelectronic applications, due to their ultimate body thickness, sizable and tunable bandgap, and decent theoretical room‐temperature mobility. So far, however, all TMDCs show much lower mobility experimentally because of the collective effects by foreign impurities, which has become one of the most important limitations for their device applications. Here, taking MoS2 as an example, the key factors that bring down the mobility in TMDC transistors, including phonons, charged impurities, defects, and charge traps, are reviewed. A theoretical model that quantitatively captures the scaling of mobility with temperature, carrier density, and thickness is introduced. By fitting the available mobility data from literature over the past few years, one obtains the density of impurities and traps for a wide range of transistor structures. This paper reports that evaporation‐driven water flow within an all‐printed porous carbon film can reliably generate sustainable voltage up to 1 V with a power density of ≈8.1 µW cm −3 under ambient conditions. The output performance of the device can be easily scaled up and used to power low‐power consumption electronic devices or for energy storage. Furthermore, highly integrated data acquisition, processing, and wireless transmission system is established and equipped with the sensor array to realize real‐time sleep behavior monitoring and sleep quality evaluation. Moreover, the smart textile can further serve as a self‐powered warning system in the case of an aged nonhospitalized patients falling down from the bed, which will immediately…

Lead halide perovskite nanocrystals (NCs) with bright luminescence and broad spectral tunability are good candidates as smart probes for bioimaging, but suffer from hydrolysis even when exposed to atmosphere moisture. In this paper, a strategy is demonstrated by embedding CsPbX 3 (X = Cl, Br, I) NCs into microhemispheres (MHSs) of polystyrene matrix to prepare “water‐resistant” NCs@MHSs hybrids as multicolor multiplexed optical coding agents. First, a facile room‐temperature solution self‐assembly approach to highly luminescent colloidal CsPbX 3 NCs is developed by injecting a stock solution of CsX⋅PbX 2 in N , N ‐dimethylformamide into dichloromethane. Polyvinyl pyrrolidone (PVP) is chosen as the capping ligand, which is physically adsorbed and wrapped on the surface of perovskite NCs to form a protective layer. The PVP protective layer not only leads to composition‐tunable CsPbX 3 NCs with high quantum yields and narrow emission linewidths of 12–34 nm but also acts as an interfacial layer, making perovskite NCs compatible with polystyrene polymers and facilitating the next step to…
How to read this list
The cohort is every article, review and book chapter OpenAlex attributes to Advanced Functional Materials with publication year 2017, excluding retracted works and paratext such as editorials and errata. The top 50 by citation count are listed; the percentile is the rank divided by the cohort size. 50 of the 50 entries have an abstract in OpenAlex. Counts were read on 29 October 2026 and will not be updated on this page, so a quoted rank stays verifiable. Full rules on the methodology page.
