Unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) object detection plays a crucial role in civil, commercial, and military domains. However, the high proportion of small objects in UAV images and the limited platform resources lead to the low accuracy of most of the existing detection models embedded in UAVs, and it is difficult to strike a good balance between detection performance and resource consumption. To alleviate the above problems, we optimize YOLOv8 and propose an object detection model based on UAV aerial photography scenarios, called UAV-YOLOv8. Firstly, Wise-IoU (WIoU) v3 is used as a bounding box regression loss, and a wise gradient allocation strategy makes the model focus more on common-quality samples, thus improving the localization ability of the model. Secondly, an attention mechanism called BiFormer is introduced to optimize the backbone network, which improves the model's attention to critical information. Finally, we design a feature processing module named Focal FasterNet block (FFNB) and propose two new detection scales based on this module, which makes the shallow features and…

Road defect detection is a crucial task for promptly repairing road damage and ensuring road safety. Traditional manual detection methods are inefficient and costly. To overcome this issue, we propose an enhanced road defect detection algorithm called BL-YOLOv8, which is based on YOLOv8s. In this study, we optimized the YOLOv8s model by reconstructing its neck structure through the integration of the BiFPN concept. This optimization reduces the model's parameters, computational load, and overall size. Furthermore, to enhance the model's operation, we optimized the feature pyramid layer by introducing the SimSPPF module, which improves its speed. Moreover, we introduced LSK-attention, a dynamic large convolutional kernel attention mechanism, to expand the model's receptive field and enhance the accuracy of object detection. Finally, we compared the enhanced YOLOv8 model with other existing models to validate the effectiveness of our proposed improvements. The experimental results confirmed the effective recognition of road defects by the improved YOLOv8 algorithm. In comparison to…

Diabetic retinopathy (DR) is a common complication of long-term diabetes, affecting the human eye and potentially leading to permanent blindness. The early detection of DR is crucial for effective treatment, as symptoms often manifest in later stages. The manual grading of retinal images is time-consuming, prone to errors, and lacks patient-friendliness. In this study, we propose two deep learning (DL) architectures, a hybrid network combining VGG16 and XGBoost Classifier, and the DenseNet 121 network, for DR detection and classification. To evaluate the two DL models, we preprocessed a collection of retinal images obtained from the APTOS 2019 Blindness Detection Kaggle Dataset. This dataset exhibits an imbalanced image class distribution, which we addressed through appropriate balancing techniques. The performance of the considered models was assessed in terms of accuracy. The results showed that the hybrid network achieved an accuracy of 79.50%, while the DenseNet 121 model achieved an accuracy of 97.30%. Furthermore, a comparative analysis with existing methods utilizing the same…

Today, blockchain is becoming more popular in academia and industry because it is a distributed, decentralised technology which is changing many industries in terms of security, building trust, etc. A few blockchain applications are banking, insurance, logistics, transportation, etc. Many insurance companies have been thinking about how blockchain could help them be more efficient. There is still a lot of hype about this immutable technology, even though it has not been utilised to its full potential. Insurers have to decide whether or not to use blockchain, just like many other businesses do. This technology keeps a distributed ledger on each blockchain node, making it more secure and transparent. The blockchain network can operate smart contracts and convince others to agree, so criminals cannot make mistakes. On another side, the Internet of Things (IoT) might make a real-time application work faster through its automation. With the integration of blockchain and IoT, there will always be a problem with technology regarding IoT devices and mining the blockchain. This paper gives a…

Deep reinforcement learning has produced many success stories in recent years. Some example fields in which these successes have taken place include mathematics, games, health care, and robotics. In this paper, we are especially interested in multi-agent deep reinforcement learning, where multiple agents present in the environment not only learn from their own experiences but also from each other and its applications in multi-robot systems. In many real-world scenarios, one robot might not be enough to complete the given task on its own, and, therefore, we might need to deploy multiple robots who work together towards a common global objective of finishing the task. Although multi-agent deep reinforcement learning and its applications in multi-robot systems are of tremendous significance from theoretical and applied standpoints, the latest survey in this domain dates to 2004 albeit for traditional learning applications as deep reinforcement learning was not invented. We classify the reviewed papers in our survey primarily based on their multi-robot applications. Our survey also…

Nowadays, the solution to many practical problems relies on machine learning tools. However, compiling the appropriate training data set for real-world classification problems is challenging because collecting the right amount of data for each class is often difficult or even impossible. In such cases, we can easily face the problem of imbalanced learning. There are many methods in the literature for solving the imbalanced learning problem, so it has become a serious question how to compare the performance of the imbalanced learning methods. Inadequate validation techniques can provide misleading results (e.g., due to data shift), which leads to the development of methods designed for imbalanced data sets, such as stratified cross-validation (SCV) and distribution optimally balanced SCV (DOB-SCV). Previous studies have shown that higher classification performance scores (AUC) can be achieved on imbalanced data sets using DOB-SCV instead of SCV. We investigated the effect of the oversamplers on this difference. The study was conducted on 420 data sets, involving several sampling…

The predictive maintenance of electrical machines is a critical issue for companies, as it can greatly reduce maintenance costs, increase efficiency, and minimize downtime. In this paper, the issue of predicting electrical machine failures by predicting possible anomalies in the data is addressed through time series analysis. The time series data are from a sensor attached to an electrical machine (motor) measuring vibration variations in three axes: X (axial), Y (radial), and Z (radial X). The dataset is used to train a hybrid convolutional neural network with long short-term memory (CNN-LSTM) architecture. By employing quantile regression at the network output, the proposed approach aims to manage the uncertainties present in the data. The application of the hybrid CNN-LSTM attention-based model, combined with the use of quantile regression to capture uncertainties, yielded superior results compared to traditional reference models. These results can benefit companies by optimizing their maintenance schedules and improving the overall performance of their electric machines.
