ABSTRACT Stealth or low observable technology has been one of the most critical requirements for military aviation sector to counter the ever‐advancing target detection technologies worldwide. Among many, Radar, which operates in the broadband spectrum, is one of the principal threats, which measures the radar cross section (RCS) of the aircraft. Hence, researchers are putting immense efforts to develop low RCS materials based on polymer matrix composites (PMCs) called as radar absorbing structures (RAS), to replace highly reflective conventional metallic aircraft structures. Though many researchers have been successful in RAS realization using radar absorbing materials (RAMs) as fillers, this review article reckons the state‐of‐the‐art advanced research on the realization of RAS using a combination of RAMs and multilayered grid devices such as, frequency selective surfaces, circuit analog absorbers, metamaterials, and so on, and their effect on mechanical properties to deliver superior performance RAS for stealth aircrafts. © 2018 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. ABSTRACT Thermoset resins have been extensively utilized as an adhesive for electronic devices. In particular, semiconductor packaging materials between chips/substrates require electrical interconnections by using deoxidizing agents along with thermoset adhesives. In this study, a facile combination of hydroxyl‐functionalized epoxy and cyclohexane‐structured cyclic anhydrides produced curable acidic moieties, thereby allowing synchronous deoxidizing and curing without the use of a deoxidizing agent. By contrast, unitary cyclic anhydrides rarely presented acidic moieties, probably due to their rapid networkable reactivity caused by structural flexibility once opened, which was detected and quantified by spectroscopic analyses. This binary system in the absence of additional deoxidizing agents achieved the complete wetting of common Sn‐based solders via chip bonding systems due to the generated acidic moieties. The binary mixture also showed an increased glass transition temperature of 110 °C and enhanced Young's modulus of 1.6 GPa, relative to the ternary mixture (85 °C and 0.8 GPa)…

ABSTRACT The main objective of this work is to study the effect of chemical treatment on the thermal properties of hybrid natural fiber‐reinforced composites (NFRCs). Different chemical treatments [i.e., alkalized and mixed (alkalized+ silanized)] were used to improve the adhesion between the natural fibers (jute, ramie, sisal, and curauá) and the polymer matrix. A differential scanning calorimetry, thermogravimetry, and a dynamic mechanical analysis were performed to study the thermal properties of hybrid NFRC. It was found that the chemical treatments increased the thermal stability of the composites. Scanning electron microscopy images showed that the chemical treatments altered the morphology of the natural fibers. A rougher surface was observed in case of alkali treated fiber, whereas a thin coating layer was formed on the fiber surface during the mixed treatment. However, for some fibers (i.e., sisal and rami), the chemical treatment has a positive impact on the composite properties, whereas for the jute and curauá composites, the best behavior was found for untreated fibers.…

ABSTRACT Phthalate esters received a considerable attention owing to its various applications and the harmful health effects resulting from phthalate exposure; thus, finding an alternative to phthalate derivatives became a necessity. Phthalate esters are commonly used as plasticizer in polymer formulation; in particular for poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC) formulation. According to the researches in the last 18 years, epoxidized vegetable oils are one of the alternatives that are strongly encouraged to substitute phthalate esters since they were proven to be valid in various applications, eco‐friendly and sustainable resource. However, most of the production practices for epoxidized vegetable oil are via conventional epoxidation that concentrates on a catalyst that is homogeneous and non‐reusable. This type of catalyst, however, causes several problems later in the process. Therefore, the selective epoxidation of vegetable oils process requires new catalytic systems that are more aligned with the green chemistry principles. This article reviews the harmful health effects associated with…

ABSTRACT There has been a steady progress in developing synthetic fibers in the past few years. Bicomponent fibers and nanofibers in a core/shell (C/S) configuration, including two dissimilar materials have presented unusual potential for use in many novel applications. These fibers can be produced using a variety of materials via different techniques i.e., coaxial melt spinning and electrospinning. In this review, we discuss the recent advances in C/S fibers and nanofibers’ production. The first part has been assigned to the bicomponent fibers manufacturing technology, while production and applications of C/S nanofibers have been described in the second part. © 2018 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. ABSTRACT Polyurethane/water glass (PU/WG) grouting materials were prepared in presence of different proportions of catalyst. The effects of catalyst on the mechanical properties, thermal properties, and chemical cross‐sectional morphologies of the grouting materials were also investigated. Catalyst addition can significantly increase the chemical reaction rate, reduce the gel time and curing time, and improve the thermal stability of PU/WG grouting materials. It was found that the grouting material containing 0.1 wt % BDMA + 0.1 wt % DBTDL demonstrated high fluidity, short curing time, and high early‐stage and late‐stage (up to 66.1 MPa) compression strengths. However, when the content of the added catalyst was equal to 0.5 wt %, fine cracks were formed in the material structure accompanied by the detachment of spherical particles from the PU matrix, which significantly deteriorated its mechanical properties. © 2018 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. ABSTRACT Cellulose nanocrystal (CNCs)‐reinforced poly(lactic acid) (PLA) nanocomposites were prepared using twin screw extrusion followed by injection molding. Masterbatch approach was used to achieve more efficient dispersion of CNCs in PLA matrix. Modified CNCs (b‐CNCs) were prepared using benzoic acid as a nontoxic material through a green esterification method in a solvent‐free technique. Transmission electron microscopy images did not exhibit significant differences in the structure of b‐CNCs as compared with unmodified CNCs. However, a reduction of 6.6–15.5% in the aspect ratio of b‐CNCs was observed. The fracture surface of PLA‐b‐CNCs nanocomposites exhibited rough and irregular pattern which confirmed the need of more energy for fracture. Pristine CNCs showed a decrease in the thermal stability of nanocomposites, however, b‐CNCs nanocomposites exhibited higher thermal stability than pure PLA. The average storage modulus was improved by 38 and 48% by addition of CNCs and b‐CNCs in PLA, respectively. The incorporation of b‐CNCs increased Young's modulus, ultimate tensile…

ABSTRACT The global shift towards biodegradable composite has made polysaccharides a green alternative to synthetic polymers owing to their biocompatibility, sustainability, and ecofriendly biomaterials. Despite the limitations in their applications, many studies have validated the effectiveness of using organic or inorganic fillers to ameliorate their mechanical and barrier properties. However, the understanding of how polysaccharides matrix is enhanced by fillers is still inexplicit. Hence, it is imperative to review the effects of using inorganic and organic fillers in some prominent polysaccharides in terms of mechanical and water barrier properties while taking into account the function of filler morphology, size and loading. Although it is intricate to indicate the best filler used for each of the polysaccharides matrices, this review served as a “food for thought” on the established works of enhanced‐matrix filler combinations aimed at improving the mechanical and barrier properties of biodegradable films based on neutral or negatively charged polysaccharides‐based composite…

ABSTRACT Concern about environmental issues has motivated research into the development of biodegradable packaging from renewable sources. Natural polymers such as starch constitute a good alternative for diminishing the use of nonbiodegradable and nonrenewable components in the packaging industry. However, depending on the botanical source, films with different properties are formed. The aim of this study was to evaluate the film‐forming capacity of different starch sources (cassava, corn, potato, and wheat) by casting with starch contents from 2 to 6%. Principal component analysis methodology was used to evaluate the correlation between the formulations and their physicochemical and mechanical properties. It was not possible to produce continuous films based on potato starch, probably because of its very low amylose content (10%). The corn‐, cassava‐, and wheat‐starch‐based films were characterized by their thicknesses (0.06–0.22 mm), moisture contents (19–26%), water solubilities (13.7–26.5%), water‐vapor permeabilities (WVPs; 0.19–0.48 g mm h−1 m−2 kPa−1), wettabilities…

Recently, they have sparked an interest among soft robotics researchers as they can be easily formed into various shapes and actuated in a relatively fast and easy way. In this article, we examine the nonlinear elastic response of a silicon rubber, Ecoflex, under both compressible and incompressible constraints. An experimental test on a uniaxial tension indicates a slight compressibility, and the compressibility increases with stretching. Five different constitutive material models are considered to describe the nonlinear elastic responses of Ecoflex under both compressible and incompressible conditions. In addition, finite element (FE) analysis is presented to analyze multiaxial response of structures or devices made of Ecoflex under complex boundary conditions. This study highlights the variations in the multiaxial response of structures at large deformations from different constitutive models under different compressible and…

This work comprehensively reports the fabrication and characterization of poly(vinylidene fluoride) fiber webs with comparable diameters and diversified surface morphologies (wrinkled, smooth, and porous) based on randomly oriented and aligned fiber webs which are used as active layers to directly make a piezoelectric nanogenerator (PENG). The results show that wrinkled fibers are preferable fiber webs for the PENG owing to their outstanding properties represented by high fibers friction, supreme β phase content (F[β]), and interior pores. Furthermore, we found that the electrical outputs of the PENG based on aligned fiber webs are higher than those based on randomly oriented fiber webs due to the increase in the friction area. The electrical outputs of the PENG based on the aligned wrinkled fiber webs are able to run microelectronic devices when it subjected to a mechanical impact. However, environmental impacts increased due to their incorrect post‐use disposal which leads the degradable films to emerge as an alternative. The production films of poly(butylene adipate‐co‐terephthalate) and poly(lactic acid) reinforced with calcium carbonate (CaCO3) was studied focusing on producing lower cost materials and flexible films. Four different films (reinforcement compositions) were prepared by melt extrusion with 10 and 20 wt % of CaCO3. Mechanical and thermal properties, crystallinity, water absorption, and soil degradation, were evaluated. The addition of reinforcement leads to improved compatibility between the polymers in the matrix, which usually presented phase segregation. The films showed better mechanical properties with the addition of CaCO3. Highly orientated amorphous structures were obtained leading to low water absorption and low degradation in the simulated soil. This low degradation, suggests that the obtained films would be…

ABSTRACT Poly(lactic acid) (PLA) is a biodegradable aliphatic polymer obtained from renewable sources; its main application is in the packaging sector. Electronic components require the use of antistatic packaging that prevents damage and electric shock. As PLA has no conductive characteristics, it requires the addition of allotropic carbon forms such as conductive carbon black to make the polymer less resistive as the dissipative material and making it suitable for the manufacture of antistatic packaging. In this study, PLA was melt blended with 5, 10, and 15 wt % of carbon black. The composites were prepared using a high‐speed mixer. Samples were characterized by Izod impact resistance tests, scanning electron microscopy, thermal properties, electrical characterization, and biodegradation tests in garden soil. The addition of carbon black in the PLA matrix increases the temperature of degradation and decreases the crystallinity degree and the impact resistance of the composites. However, carbon black is a great option to increase the electrical conductivity of PLA. The addition of…

ABSTRACT By use of biaxial stretching process of poly(vinylidene fluoride) fabrication to gain high piezoelectricity is the focus in this article. The influence of different stretch ratio and temperature are investigated and compared to uniaxial stretching process. The Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and X‐ray diffraction are used to observe the β‐phase fraction and the degree of crystallinity. The piezoelectric coefficients (d33, d31) and the sensitivity are also measured. All the above characteristic examinations show the same consequences that equi‐biaxial stretching process employed with same stretch ratio in both axial directions of poly(vinylidene fluoride) fabrication is the focus in this article. And heating temperature would have adequate piezoelectricity approximate to uniaxial stretching. In observation of surface morphology by using scanning electron microscopy, uniformity in biaxial direction is gained. However, biaxial stretching with higher stretch ratio of R = 4 × 4 would produce porosity and crack. Via atomic force microscopy, biaxial stretching with higher…

ABSTRACT Commercial epoxy sized carbon fibers (CFs) or unsized CFs have poor interfacial adhesion with polyamide 6 (PA6). Here, CFs are coated with polyurethane (PU) and their surface properties in terms of surface chemistry, contact angle, roughness, and morphology, are investigated. The results of Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and atomic force microscopy demonstrate PU sizing evidently increases the quantity of polar functional groups on the CFs surface. The surface energy of the PU sized fiber is calculated according to the Owens–Wendt method. Compared with unsized fibers, the contact angle of PU sized fibers is decreased while their total surface energy is increased, indicating superior wettability. Moreover, transverse fiber bundle tests are performed to determine the interfacial adhesion between the CFs and PA6 matrix. The transverse fiber bundle strength of unsized CF is measured to be 12.57 MPa. For PU sized CFs processed with sizing concentration of 1.2%, this value is increased to 24.35 MPa, showing…

ABSTRACT In this study, we synthesized novel films based on bacterial cellulose (BC), BC modified by polypyrrole (PPy), and a PPy–zinc oxide nanocomposite (BC–PPy–ZnO). The soft polymerization method at room temperature was used to obtain the BC–PPy and BC–PPy–ZnO films. The Combined D‐Optimal design was used to study the effects of the pyrrole monomer concentration, ZnO concentration, and polymerization time on the morphological, physical, color, and electrical conductivity properties of the films. Fourier transform infrared results reflected that some new interactions occurred between BC and PPy and PPy–ZnO. The X‐ray diffraction analysis showed that the crystalline behavior of the BC fiber was hindered because of the complete coating with the amorphous PPy particles. Scanning electron microscopy results show that the ZnO, PPy, and PPy–ZnO nanoparticles were placed between the BC fibers. PPy decreased the water vapor permittivity and total soluble matter percentage. Electrical conductivity studies of the synthesized BC–PPy–ZnO film showed that the film's electrical resistance was…

ABSTRACT Three‐dimensional (3D) printing processes are nowadays leading the charge in transforming traditional art, engineering, and manufacturing processes. In this study, the structural and thermal behavior of commercially available filaments composed of synthetic poly(acrylonitrile‐ co ‐butadiene‐ co ‐styrene) thermoplastic as well as poly(lactic acid) and poly(lactic acid)/polyhydroxyalcanoate reinforced with bamboo ( Bambusa sp .) wood flour composite biothermoplastics were assessed by differential scanning calorimetry and infrared spectroscopy, aiming to understand the modifications that occur at the molecular level during their 3D printing. It has been determined that the biothermoplastic materials undergo both molecular reorientations related to tacticity increase and crystallinity decrease when submitted to 3D printing extrusion, while the synthetic thermoplastic undergoes crosslinking due to its butadiene component. All of the studied materials present good water stability (with water uptake values between 0.8% and 24%), and the water absorption follows a pseudo‐Fickian…

ABSTRACT In this work, a bio‐based flame retardant, casein, was incorporated into poly(lactic acid) (PLA) matrix by melt compounding in order to improve the fire resistance and sustain the biodegradable character of PLA simultaneously. The fire performance of PLA composites was evaluated by limiting oxygen index, UL‐94 vertical burning, and cone calorimeter tests, respectively. The results indicated that the introduction of 20% casein increased the limiting oxygen index value of PLA composites from 20.0% to 32.2%, upgraded the UL‐94 rating from no rating to V‐0, and decreased the peak heat release rate from 779 to 639 kW/m2. The decomposition products of PLA composites were analyzed by Fourier transform infrared, and the morphology of the char after combustion was observed by scanning electron microscopy. It was suggested that casein took effects in both gas phase by releasing non‐flammable gases (such as NH3 and H2O) and condensed phase by the formation of protective char layers. However, the presence of casein in PLA induced an unavoidable deterioration in the mechanical…

ABSTRACT In this article, the performance of polyethersulfone (PES) ultra‐ and nanofiltration membranes, prepared with the non‐toxic solvent dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO), was investigated. The membranes were prepared by immersion precipitation via phase inversion. Experimental results proved that DMSO is a better alternative to N‐methyl‐2‐pyrrolidone (NMP) as solvent for PES ultrafiltration membranes as the membranes had a higher permeability and rejection of bovine serum albumin (BSA). An explanation was found based on experimental cloud point data and scanning electron microscopy images showing the morphology. The rejection of BSA and rose Bengal (RB) was proportional to the polymer concentration. On the contrary, the permeability decreased with increasing polymer concentration. For a casting thickness of 250 µm, an optimal balance between permeability and rejection of macromolecules for ultrafiltration was found at 24 wt % PES. The permeability was inversely proportional to the casting thickness, but a small decrease in rejection was observed when lowering the thickness. A good…

Using supercritical CO2 batch foaming, the foamability of the blends is systematically investigated. It is found that the 80/20 (wt %/wt %) TPU/PLA blend (TPU80%) shows vastly enhanced foamability over a wide range of foaming conditions to produce foams with a myriad of cellular morphology. The foamability enhancement results from the improved cell nucleation and growth, and the changes in the polymer microstructure. After depolymerization of PET in the presence of ethylene glycol and the Perkalite nanocatalyst, the main product obtained was bis(2‐hydroxylethyl) terephthalate (BHET) with high purity, as confirmed by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and NMR. The BHET monomers could serve directly as starting materials in a further polymerization into PET with a virgin quality and contribute to a solution for the disposal of PET polymers. Compared with the direct glycolysis of PET, the addition of a predegradation step was shown to reduce the reaction time needed to reach the depolymerization equilibrium. The addition of the predegradation step also allowed lower reaction temperatures. Therefore, the strategy to include a predegradation step before depolymerization is suitable for increasing the efficiency of the glycolysis reaction of PET into BHET monomers. © 2018 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. With the casting method, monolayer and bilayer (BL) films were produced with alginate/CMC proportions (weight percentages) of 0:100 (0A), 25:75 (25A), 50:50 (50A), 75:25 (75A), and 100:0 (100A). Thin, homogeneous, and continuous films were obtained with glycerol and crosslinking with CaCl2. The fluid uptake, film stability, and morphological, mechanical, thermal, and barrier properties were evaluated. A general tendency of the film characteristics was visualized: 50A had intermediary characteristics from both polymers; although the liquid behavior characteristics were improved with increasing CMC content, the mechanical properties worsened. When compared to the monolayer film (50A), the BL film 50A–BL demonstrated a better water vapor transmission rate. The crystallization rate of PA56/PA66 blend was speeded up significantly with the increasing PA66 content when the PA66 content was less than 30 wt %. Further increase in the PA66 content only leads to relatively less increase of the crystallization rate in the PA56/PA66 blends. Activation energies have been determined with Friedman method. ABSTRACT In the present study, graphene oxide (GO) was incorporated into poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) and chemically modified PVDF (M‐PVDF) to prepare mixed matrix membranes (MMMs) for gas separation application. Performed analyses proved appropriate dispersion of exfoliated GO sheets in polymer matrices and sufficient compatibility at the interfacial phases. M‐PVDF based MMMs were thermally and mechanically more stable relative to the PVDF‐based MMMs. The oxygen containing functional groups in M‐PVDF was probably the main reason for this more stability. PVDF/GO MMMs rendered low gas permeability and high selectivity. Both impermeable GO sheets and crystalline phases of PVDF were responsible for such behavior. On the other hand, interestingly gas permeability of M‐PVDF/GO MMMs was enhanced while no substantial decline was recorded in gas selectivity. For instance, He and CO2 permeability was increased 12.46% and 25.89%, respectively, compared to the pure PVDF membrane. This behavior originated from functional groups of M‐PVDF and the interaction of these groups with GO sheets.…

ABSTRACT This article describes the adsorption and tensile behavior of electrospun polyacrylonitrile (PAN) nanofiber mats loaded with different amounts of ZnO [0.5, 1.0, 2.0, and 5.0 wt%] nanoparticles. X‐ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier transforminfrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, and thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA) were utilized to characterize the resulting composite nanofibers. Microscopic investigations revealed that the increase in surface roughness and diameter of the electrospun PAN nanofibers was due to the addition of ZnO nanoparticles. Adsorption results indicated that the fabricated PAN/ZnO (2.0 wt%) composite nanofiber mats showed the best adsorption performance with 261% and 167% increase in adsorption capacities for Pb(II) and Cd(II) from aqueous solutions, respectively, compared to pristine PAN nanofibers. The adsorption equilibrium was reached within 60 min, and the process could be described using the nonlinear pseudo‐second‐order kinetic model. The adsorption isotherm study was better represented by the Langmuir model, which…

ABSTRACT Polyetheramine (PEA)‐modified epoxies with various types of PEAs were prepared and respective effects on characteristics of epoxy networks were studied. The used PEAs were polyethylene glycol diamine (PEG‐amine) and polypropylene glycol diamine (PPG‐amine) with two different molecular weights (i.e., 200 and 400 g mol−1). According to mechanical tests, the structural parameters of PEAs played an important role in final properties of epoxy/amine systems. PEG400‐amine and PPG200‐amine had the highest and lowest effects on the properties of epoxy networks, respectively. Whereas 10 phr PEG400‐amine increased critical stress intensity factor (KIC) and critical strain energy release rate (GIC) of the epoxy up to 82 and 294%, the same number of PPG200‐amine chains caused to increase the KIC and GIC up to 11 and 34%. This discrepancy could be assigned to higher flexibility index (φ = 26.22), longer chain length (~27 atoms), and higher secondary interactions [δ = 9.69 (cal cm−3)0.5] of PEG400‐amine in comparison with PPG200‐amine [with φ = 8.08, ~10 atoms in chain, and δ = 8.98 (cal…

ABSTRACT A new membrane was synthesized containing pure alginate, crosslinking agent (CaCl2), and plasticizer (glycerol). Characterization studies of the membrane were applied to determine the characteristics and morphology using field emission scanning electron microscope, EDX, FTIR, XRD, and atomic force microscopy analysis. The half‐cell performance test of the membrane was verified by several tests, including proton conductivity and methanol permeability. The best membrane had high proton conductivity (10.1 × 10−3 S cm−1) and very low methanol permeability (1.984 × 10−7 cm2 s−1), which consequently resulted in very high selectivity (5.0907 × 104 Ss cm−3). Glycerol had a positive modification and good influence on the alginate characteristics. Furthermore, the poor mechanical properties of the alginate biopolymer were enhanced by calcium chloride and glycerol inside the polymer. © 2018 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Appl. Polym. ABSTRACT This study investigated a simple synthesis of a crosslinked poly(vinyl alcohol)/ graphene oxide composite membrane with lower ethanol permeability membrane for passive direct ethanol–proton exchange membrane fuel cells (DE‐PEMFCs). The chemical and physical structure, morphologies, ethanol uptake and permeability, ion exchange capacities, water uptake, and proton conductivities were determined and found that transport properties of the membrane were affected by the GO loading. The composite membrane with optimum GO content (15 wt %) exhibited the highest proton conductivity of 9.5 × 10−3 Scm−1 at 30°C, 3.24 × 10−2 Scm−1 at 60°C, respectively and reduced ethanol permeability until 1.75 × 10−7 cm2 s−1. In the passive DE‐PEMFC, the power density at 60°C were obtained as 5.84 mW cm−2 higher than those by commercial Nafion 117 is 4.52 mW cm−2. © 2018 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Appl. Polym.
