ABSTRACT The combination of awareness of harmful industrial processes and environmental issues and depleting petroleum‐based resources has spurred much research in developing materials from renewable sources. Epoxy resins are common pre‐polymers used in a variety of industries, such as adhesives, coatings, insulations, and high performance composites. To transform epoxy resins into crosslinked networks with desirable thermal and mechanical properties, the resins must be cured with a curing agent. This review encompasses recent developments using bio‐based epoxy resins and bio‐based epoxy curing agents. Resins and curing agents synthesized from modified plant oils, sugars, polyphenols, terpenes, rosin, natural rubber, and lignin are highlighted and their thermal and mechanical properties reviewed. © 2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. ABSTRACT Poly(butylene adipate‐ co ‐terephthalate) (PBAT) and coffee grounds (CG) wastes are biodegradable materials. The high cost of PBAT restricts its marketability; the lignocellulosic CG were used as a reinforcing agent for PBAT. Thus, the present work focuses mainly on the preparation and characterization of bio‐based PBAT composites filled with CG bio‐additives with affordable cost, and with potential use in a variety of eco‐friendly fields such as packaging, biomedical devices, and composting. The PBAT polymer was melt blended with various contents of CG powder using twin screw extrusion. The compatibility and dispersion state of investigated biocomposites in presence or absence of PEG as plasticizer were investigated by using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X‐ray diffraction (XRD). The effect of the addition of PEG on PBAT/CG was characterized by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), tensile properties, contact angle measurements, and thermogravimetric analysis. The chemical interaction between hydroxyl groups of CG particles and PEG plasticizer was achieved by…

Recent advances in carbon fibers derived from biobased precursors

ABSTRACT High‐performance carbon fibers (CFs) are currently produced primarily from polyacrylonitrile (PAN). However, the high cost of such CFs and the environmental concerns during its manufacturing (from PAN) are stimulating research on alternative bio‐based precursors and environmentally friendly processing routes. This review summarizes the recent research studies on the pathways for converting cellulose and lignin (most abundant and renewable biomass) into suitable precursor fibers and CFs. The role of various bio‐based precursors, fiber spinning routes, and process conditions on the final properties of CFs is discussed. Although bio‐based CFs reported in the current research studies have limited strength and modulus to be considered for high‐performance aerospace applications, further progress in precursor purification and optimized fiber processing may lead to their application in less demanding structural applications such as automotive and industrial. Even in their current state, a lack of graphitic crystallinity results in a lower conductivity for the resulting CFs and…

ABSTRACT Unsaturated Polyester resin is reinforced with Bi2O3 up to 60% filler weight. The effect of bismuth oxide on gamma shielding ability of the composites is studied in terms of attenuation parameters using Ba‐133, Cs‐137, and Co‐60 gamma ray sources. The results reveal that, the shielding property of the composite material increases with increase in the filler concentration and decreases with energy. The HVL, TVL, and relaxation length of the composites are found to decrease with increase in the filler concentration. It is found that, the shielding ability of 60% filled polymer composite is comparable to that of barite at low energy. The above polymer composite performs well at all energies and can act as an excellent gamma radiation shield for low energies and also proved to be light weight when compared to the conventional shielding materials. Thus, the gamma shielding ability of the UP resin is enhanced due to the addition of Bi2O3. © 2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Appl. Polym. Sci. 2017, 134, 44657.

ABSTRACT The aim of this work was to assess the diffusive properties of poly(ethylene glycol) diacrylate (PEGDA)‐based hydrogels, derived from low MW prepolymers, in view of potential biomedical applications. Several hydrogels were synthesized through UV irradiation of PEGDA solutions for different exposure times. Swelling measurements in distilled water were performed to estimate the yielded crosslink density, while swelling tests at 37 °C in selected media allowed to analyze the mesh size changes induced by various pH and ionic strength (IonS) conditions. The transport of glucose and insulin through thin hydrogel membranes was finally assessed in a modified Ussing chamber at physiological values of pH and IonS (7.4 and 150 mM, respectively). Results showed that the swelling was dependent on the IonS (with swelling reductions up to 20–30% for IonS increases in the range 0–300 mM) and, to a lesser extent, on the pH of the surrounding medium (with swelling increments of about 10% for increasing pH in the range 2.5–11). All hydrogels were also permeable to glucose and insulin, which…

ABSTRACT Mussel‐inspired chemistry has attracted widespread interest in the surface modification of polymer membranes. We have previously demonstrated a dopamine (DA) assisted codeposition process of polyethyleneimine onto polypropylene microfiltration membranes (PPMMs) for surface hydrophilization. In this work, we further investigate the effects of PEI molecular weight and DA/PEI mass ratio on the codeposition process and membrane performance. The results indicate that only low‐molecular‐weight PEI bring a distinct promotion in both surface wettability and water permeation flux for PPMMs. On the other hand, either excess DA or PEI is detrimental to the surface hydrophilicity of the studied membranes. The optimized PEI molecular weight is 600 Da and the corresponding mass ratio is 1:1 for the surface hydrophilization of PPMMs. These results are beneficial to understand those codeposition processes of dopamine with other polymers. © 2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. ABSTRACT Poly ether ketone ketone (PEKK) with different proportion of meta phenyl links were investigated by combining differential scanning calorimetry and dynamic mechanical analysis. The influence of the Terephthalyl/Isophthalyl isomers (T/I) ratio on the vitreous phase is mild, the shift of the glass transition is limited to a few degrees and the vitreous G′ is only sensitive to the content of the crystalline phase. Contrarily, the increase of meta isomers is responsible for a significant decrease of the melting temperature (T m ) by 60 °C, which considerably facilitates processing. The modification of interchain interactions in the crystalline phase might be implied. A series of thermal protocols evidenced that the difference of crystallization behavior is also dependent upon the T/I isomer ratio. A time and temperature dependence of annealing on the double melting behavior of PEKK was observed. Regarding the mechanical behavior, the observed reinforcing effect due to the crystalline phase was more prominent in the rubbery state than in the glassy state. © 2016 Wiley…

ABSTRACT The precursor fiber quality has a large impact on carbon fiber processing in terms of its performance, production yield, and cost. Polyacrylonitrile precursor fibers have been used commercially to produce strong carbon fibers with average tensile strength of 6.6 GPa. There is a scope to improve the average tensile strength of carbon fibers, since only 10% of their theoretical strength has been achieved thus far. Most attempts to increase the tensile strength of carbon fibers have been made during the conversion of precursor fiber to carbon fiber. This review highlights the potential opportunities to enhance the quality of the polyacrylonitrile‐based precursor fiber during polymer synthesis, spinning, and postspinning. These high‐quality precursor fibers can lead to new generation carbon fibers with improved tensile strength for high‐performance applications. © 2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Appl. Polym. ABSTRACT In this study, polyhydroxybutyrate (PHB) was blended with chitosan (CTS), and electrospun in order to produce more hydrophilic fibrous scaffolds with higher mass loss rates for cartilage tissue engineering application. First, the effects of diverse factors on the average and distribution of fiber's diameter of PHB scaffolds were systematically evaluated by experimental design. Then, PHB 9 wt % solutions were blended with various ratios of CTS (5%, 10%, 15%, and 20%) using trifluoroacetic acid as a co‐solvent, and electrospun. The addition of CTS could decrease both water droplet contact angle from ∼74° to ∼67° and tensile strength from, ∼87 MPa to ∼31 MPa. According to the results, the scaffolds containing 15% and 20% CTS were selected as optimized scaffolds for further investigations. Mass loss percentage of these scaffolds was directly proportional to the amount of CTS. Chondrocytes attached well to the surfaces of these scaffolds. The findings suggested that PHB/CTS blend fibrous scaffolds have tremendous potentials for further investigations for the intended…

Synthetic grafts and scaffolds for bone regeneration represent a promising solution. Fused deposition modeling is a valid tool for developing synthetic bone grafts of complex shapes, which is a key issue. The possibility of building polylactic acid–nanohydroxyapatite (PLA/nanoHA) composites by 3D printing was systematically evaluated. PLA/nanoHA filaments for low‐cost 3D printers were produced by a multistep solvent‐free procedure and characterized by scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive X‐ray spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), differential scanning calorimetry, and rheometry. TGA analysis confirmed the presence of the nanoHA amounts used in the composites, equal to 5 and 15 wt %. The glass‐transition temperature and degree of crystallinity of PLA are not influenced by presence of nanoHA, which remains substantially amorphous. ABSTRACT Thermoelectric (TE) devices enable increased efficiency and performance by converting waste heat to usable electricity or providing solid‐state, localized cooling. Large‐scale implementation of the technology is hindered by power conversion efficiency, manufacturing challenges, and material and system costs. Traditionally, inorganic compounds like bismuth telluride and lead telluride are used for their high performance, but they are brittle, scarce, and toxic. Organic compounds have lower power conversion efficiencies, but they are flexible, abundant, low‐cost, environmentally benign, and solution‐processable, making them suitable for large‐scale, high‐throughput manufacturing techniques such as roll‐to‐roll printing. Inorganic–organic hybrid composite materials can boost power conversions efficiencies while maintaining ease of processing. This review summarizes and compares four manufacturing techniques—inkjet, screen, and dispenser printing, and stereolithography—used to fabricate TE devices. ABS test specimens processed in various build orientations were subject to multiscale mechanical tests as well as local morphology and chemical analyses. Instrumented indentation, local dynamic mechanical analysis, and atomic force microscopy tests were used to explore the mechanical behavior and morphology of build surfaces and weld interfaces. An interfacial stiffening effect was found for the majority of the specimens tested, with up to a 40% increase in the indentation elastic modulus measured with respect to the build surfaces. Raman spectroscopy mapping of the interfacial areas revealed ∼30% less butadiene/styrene and butadiene/acrylonitrile ratios with respect to analysis of the build surfaces. The results revealed that the interlayer distance of GO sheets increased from 0.83 nm to 1.08 nm after assembling with Na‐alg, and Na‐alg inserted into GO layers crosslinking with multivalent cations increased the interlayer distance further. Ionic crosslinking significantly enhanced thermal and mechanical properties of Na‐alg/GO nanocomposite films. ABSTRACT In this study, two commercial polylactide (PLA) grades with different d‐lactate contents were subjected to hydrolysis in neutral, acidic, and alkaline aqueous media at temperatures above the glass transition. We monitored the hydrolysis process by means of tracking the changes in the molecular weight distribution, weight loss, water uptake, and PLA crystallinity as a function of time. In both, neutral and acidic media, hydrolysis showed an initial induction period over which no weight loss was observed, whereas the average molecular weight dropped drastically. After this initial period, the weight loss increased rapidly, whereas the molecular weight decreased slowly. Additionally, in alkaline media, hydrolysis occurred mainly through a surface‐erosion process; this resulted in a simultaneous molecular weight decrease and weight loss without a noticeable induction period. An autocatalytic mechanism was assumed in neutral and acidic media to describe the hydrolysis kinetics. The measured molecular weight decrease over time was successfully described by a two‐stage exponential…

ABSTRACT Urea is the most common source of nitrogen fertilizer, but it has serious disadvantages with respect to volatilization and leaching; these can be controlled by polymeric coatings on the granules. However, the effectiveness of this strategy depends on the formed polymer presenting good adhesion, reactivity with the urea surface, uniformity, and efficient release kinetics control. Therefore, in this study, we evaluated the release kinetics of urea coated by polyurethane produced from two oils (soybean and castor) by analyzing the influence of the thickness, coating stability, deposition interface, and total release time. The results demonstrate that castor oil produced superior materials, which achieved a total release time in water immersion of over 40 days with a total coating mass of less than 4% of the total mass. The good interface suggested that this material may produce coatings of good quality and long release times with minimum thickness, and this will maximize the total nitrogen present in the granule. © 2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The polyimide ink was prepared from its precursor poly(amic) acid, and directly printed on to a hot substrate (at around 160 °C) to initialize a rapid thermal imidization. By carefully adjusting the substrate temperature, droplet spacing, droplet velocity, and other printing parameters, polyimide films with good surface morphologies were printed between two conducting layers to fabricate capacitors. In this work, the highest capacitance value, 2.82 ± 0.64 nF, was achieved by capacitors (10 mm × 10 mm) with polyimide insulating layers thinner than 1 μm, suggesting that the polyimide inkjet printing approach is an efficient way for producing dielectric components of microelectronic devices. © 2016 The Authors Journal of Applied Polymer Science Published by Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Investigation of the physico‐mechanical properties of electrospun PVDF/cellulose (nano)fibers

ABSTRACT The electro‐activity and mechanical properties of PVDF depends mainly on the β‐phase content and degree of crystallinity. In this study, cellulose fibers were used to improve these characteristics. This could be achieved because the hydroxyl groups on cellulose would force the fluorine atoms in PVDF to be in the trans‐conformation, and the cellulose particles could act as nucleation centers. Electrospinning was used to prepare the PVDF/cellulose (nano)fibrous films, and this improved the total crystallinity and the formation of β‐crystals. However, the presence and amount of cellulose in PVDF were found to have little influence on the β‐phase content and on the total crystallinity of PVDF. Improvements in the extent of crystallinity and the β‐phase content were primarily brought about by the chain‐ and crystal orientation as a result of electrospinning. The thermal stability of PVDF in the composites slightly increased with increasing cellulose content in the composites up to 1.0 wt %, while the modulus and tensile strength significantly increased up to the same filler…

ABSTRACT Traditional commodity polymers are widely used in several disposable or short‐life items and take hundreds of years to decompose in nature. These polymers could be replaced in several uses by biodegradable polymers, like polybutylene adipate‐ co ‐terephthalate (PBAT) studied in this work. For this, nonetheless, it is necessary to improve some of the PBAT properties, like mechanical resistance and barrier properties. In this work, cellulose nanocrystals (CNC) were incorporated in PBAT with this intention, through melt extrusion. Aiming to avoid CNC aggregation during the drying and extrusion process, a CNC chemical modification with phenylbutyl isocyanate was done. It was possible to obtain PBAT‐CNC melt extruded composites with an elastic modulus 55% higher and water vapor permeability 63% lower than the values of the pure polymer, without compromising PBAT biodegradation. Therefore, the composites prepared with these enhanced properties have great potential as substitutes for traditional commodity polymers. © 2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Appl. Polym. ABSTRACT In order to increase the capacitance of Au/n‐Si (MS) structure, 7% graphene doped PVA was coated on n‐Si as an interfacial layer. The measured data of capacitance (C) and conductance (G/ω) of Au/7% graphene doped‐PVA/n‐Si (MPS) structure was utilized for the calculation of real and imaginary parts of complex permittivity (ε* = ε′ − jε″), loss tangent (tanδ), complex electric modulus (M* = M′ + jM″), and electrical conductivity (σ). The admittance measurements (C and G/ω) were carried out in the frequency range of 0.5 kHz to 1 MHz at room temperature. Frequency dependence of the dielectric constant (ε′), dielectric loss (ε″) and tanδ shows a dispersive behavior at low frequencies. This behavior was explained by Maxwell–Wagner relaxation. Due to the dipolar and the interfacial polarizations, as well as the surface states (Nss) and the interfacial PVA layer, the parameters exhibited a strong dependence on frequency and applied bias voltage. The σ versus log(f) plot exhibited both low and high frequency dispersion phenomena such that at low frequencies σ value corresponding to…

ABSTRACT Melamine poly(metal phosphates) (MPMeP) are halogen‐free flame retardants commercialized under the brand name Safire. Melamine poly(aluminum phosphate) (MPAlP), melamine poly(zinc phosphate) (MPZnP), and melamine poly(magnesium phosphate) (MPMgP) were compared in an epoxy resin (EP). The thermal decomposition, flammability, burning behavior, and glass transition temperature were investigated using thermogravimetric analysis, pyrolysis combustion flow calorimeter, UL 94 testing, cone calorimeter, and differential scanning calorimetry. While the materials exhibited similarities in their pyrolysis, EP + MPZnP and EP + MPMgP showed better fire behavior than EP + MPAlP due to superior protective properties of the fire residues. Maintaining the 20 wt % loading, MPZnP was combined with various other flame retardants. A synergistic effect was evident for melamine polyphosphate (MPP), boehmite, and a derivative of 6H‐Dibenzo[c,e][1,2]oxaphosphinine‐6‐oxide. The best overall performance was observed for EP + (MPZnP + MPP) because of the best protection effectiveness of the fire…

ABSTRACT The present investigation has emphasized the implication of nano fillers (Al2O3 and TiO2) combined additions in glass fiber reinforced polymer composite on the variation of interlaminar shear strength (ILSS). The experiment has also investigated the effect of crosshead speed during testing and subsequent fracture surface analysis to find out the possible failure modes by scanning electron micrograph examinations. Loss and storage modulus have been experimentally evaluated to support the new findings in the present experimental design. It has been observed that the concurrent presence of nano Al2O3 and TiO2 fillers improves the ILSS. Dynamic mechanical thermal analysis indicated that, the addition of nano fillers reduces the storage and loss modulus of the composites. However, glass transition temperature has not been altered by the nano fillers addition. Box–Behnken design of experiment of surface response methodology has been adopted to optimize the filler content and crosshead speed. ABSTRACT Stable and uniform dispersions of para‐aramid nanofibers have been prepared by adding methoxypolyethylene glycol (mPEG) in the polymerization process, followed by strong shear and dispersion. Aramid membranes are fabricated by vacuum‐assisted filtration of the nanofiber dispersion and assembled into batteries as separator. The membrane properties and battery performances are characterized in detail and the effect of mPEG content on these properties is explored. It is demonstrated that aramid membranes possess good electrolyte wettability, excellent mechanical properties, and superior thermal stability, which improve the safety of lithium ion batteries. The mPEG is critical to the formation of aramid nanofibers and improves the porosity and ionic conductivity of the membranes. These fascinating characteristics and facile papermaking method endow aramid membrane potential application as separator in lithium ion batteries with superior safety. © 2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. ABSTRACT Crosslinked nanocomposite films of sodium alginate (SA) and silicon dioxide (SiO 2 ) with different SiO 2 loading values were prepared by in situ synthesis. Biocomposite films were produced by solution casting and solvent evaporation with glycerol as the plasticizer and calcium chloride as the crosslinking agent. The effects of the addition of nano silicon dioxide (nano‐SiO 2 ) in SA on the microstructural, physical, mechanical, and optical properties of the nanocomposite films were characterized. The results show that nano‐SiO 2 was dispersed homogeneously in the SA matrix; it thereby formed a strong interfacial interaction between the nano‐SiO 2 particles and the matrix. The transparency of the bionanocomposite films was enhanced. Thermogravimetric analysis also revealed that nano‐SiO 2 improved the thermal stability of the SA films. The incorporation of SiO 2 further reduced the water vapor permeability and swelling degree and significantly increased the tensile strength and elongation, which are parameters important for packaging industries. ABSTRACT The mechanical and electrical properties were investigated for nanocomposites based on carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and conductive carbon black (CB). Solution room‐temperature‐vulcanized silicone rubber was used as a matrix. Vulcanizates based on CNTs and CB was prepared by solution mixing. With the addition of 2 phr of CNTs to the rubber matrix, the Young's modulus increased by 272% and reached as high as ∼706% at 8 phr, whereas the modulus increased only 125% for CB specimens at 10 phr. Similarly, the electrical properties at 5 phr content of CNT were ∼0.7 kΩ against ∼0.9 kΩ at 20 phr CB. The Kraus plot from equilibrium swelling tests shows that the high properties for CNT specimens are due to high polymer–filler interfacial interactions, the small particle size that improves the distribution of the filler in a highly exfoliated state, and high electrical connective networks among the filler particles. These improvements can especially influence medical products such as feeding tubes, seals and gaskets, catheters, respiratory masks and artificial muscles. © 2016 Wiley…

ABSTRACT A structural study of ring opening reaction of purified epoxidized natural rubber (ENR) with acetic acid was conducted using the NMR techniques and its thermal characteristic was evaluated with Thermal gravimetry/Differential Thermal Gravimetry (TG/DTG) and Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC) analyses. 1 H‐NMR revealed that 19.56% of epoxide was ring‐opened from the total amount of the epoxide unit in ENR‐50 and this was supported by Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy. 13 C‐NMR suggests the fixation of alkyl (R) i.e., acetate group to the epoxide carbon via ester linkage and formation of hydroxyl groups in the polymer chains. The attachment location of R occurred at both most (↑) and least (↓) hindered carbons of the epoxide. The TG/DTG results of acid treated ENR‐50 showed three decomposition steps at 235–338, 338–523, 523–627 °C due to the presence of the polymer chains mixture, i.e., ring‐opened and intact epoxide of ENR‐50. Cenospheres are treated with silane and HDPE is functionalized with dibutyl maleate. Tensile test specimens are cast with 20, 40, and 60 wt % of cenospheres using injection molding. Modulus and strength are found to increase with increasing cenosphere content for composites with treated constituents. Highest modulus and strength were observed for 40 and 60 wt % untreated mechanically mixed and treated brabender mixed cenospheres/HDPE blends, respectively. These values are 37 and 17% higher than those for virgin and functionalized HDPE. Theoretical models are used to assess the effect of particle properties and interfacial bonding on modulus and strength of syntactic foams. Brabender mixing method provided highest ultimate tensile and fracture strengths, which is attributed to the effectiveness of Brabender in breaking particle clusters and generating the higher particle–matrix surface area compared…

These inconsistencies may be magnified when they are used in subsequent modeling studies. Therefore, the quiescent crystallization behaviors of three PLA grades were studied with polarized optical microscopy and small‐angle light‐scattering experiments. The Gs and Ns were determined at several isothermal crystallization temperatures with a device that provided near‐instantaneous cooling to the isothermal crystallization temperature. Two growth rate regimes, which were attributed to α and α′ crystallization with a transition around 120 °C, were observed. Avrami analysis revealed that the poly(l‐lactic acid) homopolymer crystal growth was three‐dimensional and was unaffected by the presence of stereocomplex PLA. Rutherford backscattering spectroscopy, X‐ray diffraction, and transmission electron microscopy results showed the diffusion of good, crystalline‐structured (face‐centered cubic) silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) inside polycarbonate (PC) after irradiation. Ultraviolet–visible spectroscopic results indicated a blueshift in the surface plasmon resonance of the AgNPs; this revealed a particle size decrease with increasing γ‐radiation dose. This was also supported by the scanning electron microscopy results. The microstructure of the pristine PC and silver‐doped PC was monitored with positron annihilation spectroscopy, and it showed decreases in the free‐volume hole size and fractional free‐volume for Ag–PC and γ‐ray‐irradiated PC. This corroborated the Doppler broadening spectroscopy results. The thermal degradation temperature of PC was increased because of the diffusion of AgNPs in PC. ABSTRACT Lignin and Irganox 1010, a hindered phenol antioxidant, are compared as a primary stabilizer in formulations for polypropylene (PP) by exposition to accelerated aging. The concentration of lignin was adjusted to match the concentration of hindered phenolic groups of the commercial stabilizer. Upon aging, lignin formulation retains the initial mechanical properties longer than the formulation with Irganox 1010. The ratio of the areas of the carbonyl and the hydroxyl infrared absorption bands is proposed as a method to evaluate the photodegradation process. In this aspect, the formulation with lignin also presents better results than the formulation with Irganox 1010. There are two hypotheses for the best performance of lignin in the studied conditions: lower leaching of lignin, due to its crosslinked nature, and leaching of low molar mass products of Irganox 1010 hydrolysis. These results indicate lignin, from the Kraft process of Eucalyptus wood, as a promising green substituent to synthetic hindered phenol stabilizers. © 2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Appl. Polym. ABSTRACT Organic materials are promising candidates for thermoelectric applications owing to their tunable structure and therefore, properties, low cost, earth abundance, and solution processability. Conventional thermoelectric module architecture that relies on relatively thick (∼ mm) “legs” has limited the incorporation of organics into scalable modules. Herein, we report the fabrication of thermoelectric modules based on organic thermoelectric materials consisting of 100 or more p‐ and n‐legs. This approach utilizes an innovative rolled module design that is shown to easily maintain a temperature gradient above 50 K in the axial direction. Rolled modules comprising PEDOT:PSS (p‐type) and nickel (n‐type) material system with 288 legs were shown to produce an open circuit voltage and a power output of 260 mV and 46 μW, respectively at a temperature difference of 65 K. We note that the thermoelectric power generated by such modules is sufficient to simultaneously light up nine blue LEDs after boosting the output voltage with a voltage step up converter. We also demonstrate the…

ABSTRACT A novel soybean protein‐based wood adhesive with good bond strength, excellent water resistance, and the desired technological applicability was formulated by combining thermal alkali degradation, thermal acid treatment, and crosslinking. The characterization results indicated that thermal alkali degradation could effectively improve the technological applicability, thermal acid treatment could positively improve the water resistance, and appropriate crosslinking modification could significantly enhance the bond strength and water resistance of the soybean protein adhesive. The crosslinker species, crosslinker level, and ratio of thermal alkali‐degraded soybean protein (DSP) to thermal acid‐treated soybean protein (TSP) had important effects on the primary properties of the soybean protein adhesives. The modified polyamide aqueous solution was the most preferable crosslinker because of its low viscosity, good crosslinking efficiency, and excellent miscibility with soybean protein solution. The optimal soybean protein adhesive that was formulated from 20 wt % modified…

ABSTRACT Layer‐by‐layer (LbL) assembly of nanocoatings on fabric substrates has been very successful in terms of reduction of flammability. In particular, an LbL system comprised ammonium polyphosphate as the polyanion and chitosan as the polycation, applied to cotton fabric, dramatically reduced cotton flammability. At this point, the fire‐retardant (FR) mechanism of action of this system has never been fully elucidated. Sonicated and nonsonicated coated cotton fabrics were evaluated using a vertical flame test and mass loss calorimeter. Coating morphology was investigated before and after burning. Thermal analyses and chemical analyses in the condensed phase (and in the gas phase) were conducted to reveal the FR mechanism of action. At the cotton surface, a combination of both condensed (formation of aromatic char) and gas phase (release of water and highly flammable gases) mechanisms impart the FR behavior, promoting a kind of “microintumescence” phenomenon. © 2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
