Abstract The introduction of quantum communications, enabled by advancements in quantum computing, is expected to play a significant role in the field of communications. Inherent properties of quantum objects, such as superposition and entanglement, have the potential to provide novel solutions to overcome the challenges encountered by classical communication systems in bandwidth‐intensive applications such as media transmission. This research explores the performance of a quantum communication system in image transmission using quantum superposition and investigates its performance using a simple quantum channel model. With an increase in channel noise, there are significant gains in the rate distortion performance of images transmitted over the quantum channel compared to an ideal classical channel. This novel attempt at constructing a quantum communication‐based image transmission system indicates the potential of the approach to be applied to satisfy the ever‐increasing demands of high‐quality media transmission applications.

Abstract This paper proposes a technique named self‐packaged metal integrated suspended line (MISL) to design a high Q factor bandpass filter (BPF). This unique construction simplifies the traditional suspended stripline and substrate integrated suspended line configuration and creates a loss‐reduced structure, allowing for the implementation of high Q ‐factor circuits. To demonstrate the advantages of the MISL platform, the shorted 3D metal stepped impedance resonators are first investigated using a miniaturized prototype based on this novel platform. Subsequently, a third‐order BPF based on MISL technology is designed, fabricated, and characterized. The fabricated BPF exhibits a minimum insertion loss (IL) of 0.31 dB, with centre frequencies of 5.88 GHz and 3‐dB fractional bandwidths of 19.8%, respectively.

Height‐dependent LoS probability model for A2G channels incorporating airframe shadowing under built‐up scenario

Farman Ali, Yinglan Pan, Qiuming Zhu, Naeem Ahmad, Kai Mao and 1 more

    18 citationsOpen access (CC-BY)doi:10.1049/ell2.70032OpenAlex

Abstract The line of sight (LoS) probability is a key factor for the channel modeling of air‐to‐ground (A2G) communication. However, the existing LoS probability models do not account for the effects of airframe shadowing (AS) and building density, which can cause serious link obstruction and performance loss due to the six‐dimensional (6D) mobility and self‐body of unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV). In this article, a new LoS probability model is proposed that considers the AS and building density for different UAV heights. Adding to this, the AS is derived in terms of UAV framework and 6D mobility. Next, the machine learning (ML) based graph neural network (GNN) method is developed to learn the features and structure of the urban environment and predict the LoS probability. Then, the GNN model is trained and evaluated based on the ray tracing (RT) data to establish the relationship between model parameters and UAV heights under the building density and AS factors. The interpretation and explanation of the proposed GNN model and prediction are also discussed in this article. It is…

Abstract This study enhances the traditional sparrow search algorithm (SSA) to address its weaknesses, such as poor convergence rates and precision due to a tendency to fall into local optima. The improved version, OCSSA, integrates the Osprey optimization algorithm (OOA) and Cauchy mutation. Logistic chaotic mapping is used for initial population generation to increase genetic diversity. OOA boosts global exploration in the producer phase, and Cauchy mutation in the scroungers phase disrupts suboptimal solutions, enhancing the algorithm's ability to avoid local optima. OCSSA's performance, validated through ten benchmark functions and fault diagnosis optimization tasks, significantly improves convergence speed and accuracy, proving its effectiveness in complex optimization challenges.

Abstract Monitoring nocturnal animals in the field is an important task in ecological research and wildlife conservation, but the complexity of nocturnal images and low light conditions make it difficult to cope with traditional image processing methods. To address this problem, researchers have introduced infrared cameras to improve the accuracy of nocturnal animal behaviour observations. Object detection in nighttime images captured by infrared cameras faces several challenges, including low image quality, animal scale variations, occlusion, and pose changes. This study proposes the YOLOv8‐night model, which effectively overcomes these challenges by introducing a channel attention mechanism in YOLOv8. The model is more focused on capturing animal‐related features by dynamically adjusting the channel weights, which improves the saliency of key features and increases the accuracy rate in complex backgrounds. The main contribution of this study is the introduction of the channel attention mechanism into the YOLOv8 framework to create a YOLOv8‐night model suitable for object detection…

Abstract Wind power systems (WPs) are complex non‐linear systems with varying parameters affected by environmental changes, including wind speed fluctuations. Extracting maximum power from WPs poses a significant challenge due to these factors. Direct power control (DPC) is a highly effective technique known for its simplicity and ease of implementation. However, it suffers from power ripples caused by the use of hysteresis comparators and switching tables that operate at variable frequencies. To address this issue, this paper presents the robust neural controller (NC) based on DPC, which replaces the switching tables. The Double‐Fed Induction Generator (DFIG) is the chosen generator for the studied WP system due to its advantageous features. The NC‐DPC effectively regulates the exchange of active and reactive powers between the DFIG and the system, maximizing power extraction from the WP system while reducing Total Harmonic Distortion and enhancing overall system quality. The effectiveness of the NC‐DPC is evaluated through MATLAB simulations and further supported by experimental…

Abstract High‐power applications with low‐voltage (LV) dc loads, for example, fast charging stations for electric vehicles (EVs), are typically supplied from the medium‐voltage (MV) grid. Aiming for low volume, MVac‐LVdc solid‐state transformers (SSTs) that provide galvanic separation with medium‐frequency transformers (MFTs) are thus considered, which are conventionally realized as two‐stage systems that consist of an ac‐dc power‐factor‐correction (PFC) rectifier and an isolated dc‐dc converter. This letter extends a new single‐stage isolated bidirectional PFC rectifier concept to MV levels, resulting in an SST that performs MVac‐LVdc conversion in a single converter stage and, unlike many modular SST concepts, employs only a single MFT. The SST's primary side operates modular‐multilevel‐converter (MMC) bridge legs, whose input voltages contain large ac components, in the quasi‐two‐level mode to minimize the cell capacitors. The secondary side employs a standard LV three‐phase rectifier, and a dual‐active‐bridge‐(DAB)‐like modulation strategy allows power flow regulation and…

    10 citationsOpen access (CC-BY)doi:10.1049/ell2.70038OpenAlex

    Show abstract

Abstract One of the most important challenges in an autonomous and robotics system is the path planning in which the system finds the optimal path from start point to goal point. The traditional path planning algorithms may have large memory requirements which scale with the size and resolution of the configuration space. To address these challenges, this paper introduces a novel path planning algorithm that combines Particle Swarm Optimization and Artificial Potential Field in the form of a path planning algorithm for mobile robots. The biological and physical concepts from Particle Swarm Optimization and Artificial Potential Field algorithms are combined to yield an algorithm which minimizes instances of getting stuck in local minima and generates a smooth but feasible path. The developed method requires memory which scales only with the number of particles and the time taken to reach the goal. This results in a memory‐efficient solution that generates smooth and feasible paths for mobile robots navigating in a 2D space.

A compact high‐gain slot antenna array with a bidirectional broadside radiation pattern

    9 citationsOpen access (CC-BY)doi:10.1049/ell2.13078OpenAlex

    Show abstract

Abstract A novel bidirectional broadside slot antenna array is proposed in this letter. The outstanding merits of this antenna array lie in the minimum width and the highest gain‐to‐area ratio (G/A) compared to previous works. The ingenious combination of the radiation mode and the transmission mode of slots is adopted, eliminating the design of the feed network. Thus, a simple and compact configuration is obtained. Moreover, two metal plates are added vertically at the sides of the slot array, with a more homogeneous radiation aperture and a higher G/A. With the 3D structure, a compact volume of the antenna array is ensured. For performance evaluation, our proof‐of‐concept design is fabricated with a cuboid dimension of 1.94 λ 0 × 0.12 λ 0 × 0.12 λ 0 , where λ 0 denotes the wavelength in free space at the centre frequency. An impedance bandwidth of 2.38 to 2.49 GHz is achieved, with a maximum gain of 9.7 dBi and a higher G/A of 39.5. The advantages including compact size and high G/A are paving the path for the potential application of communications in long and narrow spaces.

However, challenges remain in enhancing effective information representation and suppressing background clutter when considering occlusion scenes. This paper proposes a novel attention map‐driven network (AMD‐Net) for occluded person Re‐ID. Initially, the VGG19 model is designed for coarse and fine‐scale networks to achieve multi‐scale CNN feature extraction of target image information. Subsequently, while setting the corresponding feature loss function, an additional least‐squares penalty parameter is introduced to balance the optimal total loss function. Finally, leveraging the characteristics of stochastic gradient descent iteration, image features are fused and reconstructed to obtain better style transfer images. Experimental evaluations utilize peak signal‐to‐noise ratio (PSNR), structural similarity index (SSIM), information entropy (IE), and mean squared error (MSE) as metrics for assessing the transferred images, comparing them with three typical image style transfer methods. Results demonstrate that the proposed method achieves optimal performance across all…

Abstract Path planning is the key part in the process of transportation conducted by logistics robots, and there often exist some problems with it. The path designed is not always smooth enough and its search efficiency is low, for example. As a common global path planning algorithm, A‐star is based on the traditional algorithm, which is unable to solve the problem of uneven path in the movement of logistics robots. Through improving the heuristic function of the traditional A‐star algorithm, weighing the heuristic function dynamically, removing the redundant points of the traditional star algorithm path with Floyd algorithm, and setting a safe distance to prevent the logistics robot from collision at the same time, the path is finally curved to be more appropriate to the movement path of the logistics robot. The MATLAB simulation of A‐star algorithm before and after the improvement shows that the turning points of the advanced A‐star algorithm reduced 61.5% on average compared to the traditional algorithm. The path length decreased 2.4% and the traversing points reduced 58.5%. At…

The backbone, serving as the primary feature extraction component of the defect recognition model, has not been thoroughly exploited. High‐performance vision transformer (ViT) is less adopted due to high computational complexity and limitations of computational resources and storage hardware in industrial scenarios. This paper presents LSA‐Former, a lightweight transformer architectural backbone that integrates the benefits of convolution and ViT. LSA‐Former proposes a novel self‐attention with linear computational complexity, enabling it to capture local and global semantic features with fewer parameters. LSA‐Former is pre‐trained on ImageNet‐1K and surpasses state‐of‐the‐art methods. LSA‐Former is employed as the backbone for various detectors, evaluated specifically on the PCB defect detection task. Numerous algorithms have been devised to tackle this issue by selecting key points. However, these approaches often necessitate extensive computations, giving rise to challenges related to computational time and complexity. This letter proposes a multi‐domain uniform sampling method (MDU‐sampling) for large‐scale outdoor LiDAR point cloud registration. The feature extraction based on deep learning aggregates information from the neighbourhood, so there is redundancy between adjacent features. The sampling method in this paper is carried out in the spatial and feature domains. First, uniform sampling is executed in the spatial domain, maintaining local point cloud uniformity. This is believed to preserve more potential point correspondences and is beneficial for subsequent neighbourhood information aggregation and feature sampling. Subsequently, a secondary sampling in the feature domain is performed to reduce redundancy among the…

Abstract Compared with the traditional two‐step localization methods, the direct position determination (DPD) method is more robust at low signal‐to‐noise ratio. However, to guarantee the optimal location result, the computational complexity of DPD with grid search is too high, especially for moving targets. Therefore, a new DPD method is proposed for moving targets with low computational complexity. First, using a proposed cost function, the position information is obtained from the received array signals directly, which enhances the accuracy of localization. Second, utilizing the method of successional difference the velocity is extracted, which avoid the multi‐dimensional grid search and reduces the computational complexity. Surfaces that appear “smooth” but with internal features comparable to the wavelength have shown to cause frequency selective scattering. An n th‐degree polynomial regression model is employed to quantify non‐linear multi‐path scattering that cannot be described by a best‐fit line, with least‐squares regression applied to find the best‐fitting polynomial and hence the coefficients. Early and accurate ROP diagnosis is imperative for appropriate treatment. However, less research concentrates on early‐stage ROP diagnosis based on limited‐labelled images in an imbalanced dataset. To address the dilemma, this study proposed a novel self‐supervised network, MOCO‐MIM, for early ROP grading. Abstract The model‐based sensorless control of permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) relies on the motor parameters. In practice, the considerable uncertainty of inductance and the difference between the apparent inductance and the incremental inductance exists. To overcome it, an online apparent inductance identification method for PMSM sensorless control is proposed. First, an initial incremental inductance table (IIT) is obtained offline. Then, an asymmetric high‐frequency square wave injection method is proposed to identify the incremental inductance at the operation point, and an adaptive minimum adjustment algorithm is proposed to adjust IIT automatically. Finally, the apparent inductance is calculated using the adjusted IIT. Based on it, the complete PMSM sensorless control is designed. The experimental results indicate this method is feasible and effective.
