Permanent-magnet vernier (PMV) machines are attracting more and more attention due to their high torque density and simple mechanical structure. In this paper, a novel PMV machine with an improved permanent-magnet circuit is proposed. Compared with the regular PMV machine, half of the permanent magnets (PMs) in the rotor are moved to the stator slot opening, and Halbach array PMs are employed in the stator while the consequent pole is employed in the rotor. The analysis of this machine indicates that the back electromotive-force amplitude of the proposed PMV machine could be two times that of the regular PMV machine with similar magnet usage, and for the same torque density, viz., 23.1 kNm/m3, the power factor of the proposed machine can reach 0.89, while this value is only 0.65 in the regular PMV machine.

Permanent magnet arrays offer several attributes attractive for the development of a low-cost portable MRI scanner for brain imaging. They offer the potential for a relatively lightweight, low to mid-field system with no cryogenics, a small fringe field, and no electrical power requirements or heat dissipation needs. The cylindrical Halbach array, however, requires external shimming or mechanical adjustments to produce B0fields with standard MRI homogeneity levels (e.g., 0.1 ppm over field of view), particularly when constrained or truncated geometries are needed, such as a head-only magnet where the magnet length is constrained by the shoulders. For portable scanners using rotation of the magnet for spatial encoding with generalized projections, the spatial pattern of the field is important since it acts as the encoding field. In either a static or rotating magnet, it will be important to be able to optimize the field pattern of cylindrical Halbach arrays in a way that retains construction simplicity. To achieve this, we present a method for designing an optimized cylindrical…

This paper analyzes and compares the performances of permanent-magnet-assisted synchronous reluctance machines (PMa-SynRMs) and interior permanent magnet synchronous machine (IPMSM) on their constant power speed range (CPSR) capability for electric vehicle (EV) applications. The recent trend of less rare-earth magnet makes the IPMSM unfavorable despite its excellent CPSR. As an alternative, the PMa-SynRM possesses a higher saliency with lower PM quantity. The two different rotor designs would affect the CPSR and these need to be investigated and compared. As a key performance index for EV traction motors, the CPSR calculated by analytical methods often suffers low accuracy due to omission of saturation. Finite-element analysis (FEA) can be used to obtain the CPSR but significant computation time is required. This would be disadvantageous for accurate performance prediction in design stage. To resolve these problems, six 10 kW, 30 Nm/L designs are studied and compared, covering IPMSMs and PMa-SynRMs. An approach associating analytical methods with FEA is developed for accurate and…

Recent expansion of emerging wireless power transfer technology has not been followed by an adequate systematic approach to the magnetic couplers design. The relation between design parameters (mutual inductance, coupling coefficient, leakage field flux density, coil quality factor, and so on) and structural parameters (coils and ferrite shape, size, thickness, and so on) has not been thoroughly explored, and practical designs often depend on trial-and-error methods supported by the finite-element modeling simulation to verify a final design. In order to fill that gap, this paper describes the adoption of multi-objective hybrid particle swarm optimization (MOHPSO) and multi-objective real-numbered particle swarm optimization (MORPSO) algorithms for a circular coupler design to increase performances and automate the design process. Objectives of this paper are threefold: 1) apply MOHPSO and investigate if there are some unconventional structures of circular couplers capable of outperforming traditional designs; 2) identify a minimum set of key optimization parameters for a circular…

Power distribution mechanism in smart grid necessitates the development of an easy-to-install and contactless sensing system to monitor the operational state of overhead high-voltage transmission lines. Here, we propose a robust phase current and sag estimation method at support structures. Novelty in our work is the use of dual-axis magnetic field (MF) sensors equal to the number of phase conductors. This is realized by installing an array of sensors optimally placed in the same vertical plane as of conductors on the tower. The optimal position of sensor array was found while minimizing the condition number of governing linear system close to unity. For any circuit configuration, our method processes the sensed MF vector projections through a linear system, which is based on the Biot-Savart law. It considers the practical factors, such as sag, span length, and sensor-to-conductor distance. An algorithm is then designed to estimate the electric current and sag by iterative comparison between the measured and calculated MF. The method is first tested by numerical simulations for a…

This paper presents a new switched reluctance motor (SRM) with wide speed range for the application of electric vehicles. It has an in-wheel structure for direct drive and multiple teeth per stator pole to enhance output torque. Also, the number of rotor poles is more than that of stator teeth. A 6/16 three-phase in-wheel SRM with the concepts of multi-teeth per stator pole and more rotor poles than stator teeth has been proposed for analysis. The torque performance of the topology with multi-teeth per stator pole is proven by theoretical analysis. Moreover, a new design formula is introduced for a novel combination of stator and rotor poles. The parameters of the motor are optimized by genetic algorithm method for the maximum torque output. Then the torque performance is computed by finite-element method (FEM) and compared with its counterparts, including three-phase 6/8 and 6/10 SRMs. The FEM results exhibit higher torque density for the proposed topology.

This paper deals with the nonlinear analytical harmonic modeling (HM) of three phases, and 6/4 conventional switched reluctance machine (SRM). The proposed model consists in computing magnetic field distribution and electromagnetic performances of an SRM with conventional winding. Because an SRM has inherently nonlinear characteristics, the analytical subdomain model that does not take into account the saturation has a limited accuracy. This is due to the assumption of infinite tooth permeability. The new analytical model (AM) based on the HM technique, which overcomes this limitation, is presented with the consideration of the local magnetic saturation on the stator and rotor teeth. The results obtained with the nonlinear AM have been compared with the linear AM based on the subdomain method (i.e., without the saturation effect) and nonlinear finite-element method solutions.

This paper proposes a methodology for the assessment of the human exposure to magnetic fields generated by dynamic inductive power transfer systems for automotive applications. Since the magnetic field is pulsed, current safety standards and guidelines require the use of time-domain approaches to evaluate the peak exposure, which has to be limited under the prescribed limits. This paper shows that, for these kind of systems, the peak exposure can be efficiently evaluated by means of a time-harmonic formulation. Furthermore, a methodology to identify the worst case scenario is proposed and applied to a real case.

This paper presents dosimetric results of an 85 kHz WPT system for EVs. A WPT system for charging EVs is designed and dosimetry for the system is evaluated for various exposure scenarios: a human body in front of the WPT system without shielding, with shielding, with alignment and misalignment between transmitter and receiver, and with a metal plate on the system for vehicle mimic floor pan. The minimum accessible distances in compliance are investigated for various transmitting powers. The maximum allowable transmitting power is also investigated with the limits of international safety guidelines and the dosimetric results.

Repeatability test results of the proposed smart actuator with a link-attached sphere-mounted retroreflector sensor met the goal of within 100 μm according to a laser tracker. The analysis results are in good agreement with the experimental results within the maximum 2.5% error in terms of the efficiency. The design, analysis, and experiment with the PMSM for articulated robot applications were conducted successfully.

In the current big data era, the memory wall issue between the processor and the memory becomes one of the most critical bottlenecks for conventional Von-Newman computer architecture. In-memory processing (IMP) or near-memory processing (NMP) paradigms have been proposed to address this problem by adding a small amount of processing units inside/near the memory. Unfortunately, although intensively studied, prior IMP/NMP platforms are practically unsuccessful because of the fabrication complexity and cost efficiency by integrating the processing units and memory on the same chip. Recently, emerging nonvolatile memories provide new possibility for efficiently implementing the IMP/NMP paradigm. In this paper, we propose a cost-efficient IMP/NMP solution in spin-transfer torque magnetic random access memory (STT-MRAM) without adding any processing units on the memory chip. The key idea behind the proposed IMP/NMP solution is to exploit the peripheral circuitry already existing inside memory (or with minimal changes) to perform bitwise logic operations. Such an IMP/NMP platform enables…

This paper presents a research work on the electromagnetic loss modeling and demagnetization analysis for a high-speed permanent magnet machine (HSPMM). The iron loss is estimated by improved modeling considering harmonics and rotational magnetic field effects to achieve high precision; rotor eddy current loss is researched and comprehensively investigated using finite-element method (FEM). The auxiliary slot and PM beveling are also proposed to reduce the rotor eddy current loss for machine at high-speed operation. Temperature-dependent PM demagnetization modeling is utilized in HSPMM FEM analysis to investigate machine performance due to temperature variation, while optimized rotor structures are proposed and comparatively researched by FEM to improve the machine anti-demagnetization capability in harsh conditions. The HSPMM temperature is estimated based on the calculated loss results and machine computational fluid dynamic modeling. Experimental measurements on the prototype machine verify the effectiveness of the machine electromagnetic and thermal modeling in the paper.

Multi-phase PM motors offer higher torque/power density than conventional three-phase PM motors. In this paper, a novel multi-phase consequent pole PM (CPPM) synchronous motor is proposed. The constant power-speed range of the proposed motor is quite wide as opposed to conventional PM motors. The design and the detailed finite-element analysis of the proposed nine-phase CPPM motor and performance comparison with a nine-phase surface mounted PM motor are completed to illustrate the benefits of the proposed motor.

This paper proposes and implements the concept of time-division multiplexing (TDM) wireless power transfer (WPT) for separately excited dc motor drives. Essentially, the proposed WPT system has only one transmitter that can transfer power to multiple receivers simultaneously while the power transfer to individual receivers can be independently controlled. Thus, the armature and field currents of the separately excited dc motor can be independently controlled, hence achieving the desired constant torque operation and constant power operation. The key is to make use of the TDM scheme to simultaneously transfer powers to both the armature and field windings. Meanwhile, the burst firing control method is incorporated to independently regulate the power flows to the armature and field windings at the resonant frequency, hence retaining the maximum power transfer efficiency. Both finite element analysis and experimentation are given to verify the validity of the proposed system.

Multi-objective optimization algorithms are becoming ever more popular in the field of electrical machine design as they provide engineers with an automated way of efficiently exploring huge design spaces when searching for machines that are simultaneously highly competitive regarding several objectives, such as efficiency, material costs, torque ripple, and others. Apart from exhibiting these good target characteristics, a good design should also be robust, i.e., it should not be very sensitive to slight changes in its design parameters as this would either seriously impact production costs or make the physical machine behave differently than its (optimized) computer simulation model. This paper is focused on describing how global surrogate models (i.e., nonlinear regression models), that are created in order to reduce the dependence on finite-element (FE) simulations during the multi-objective optimization run, can be easily reused to perform very fast local and global tolerance/sensitivity analyses of generated designs. While obtained in a fraction of the time required by the…

The winding factor is an operand in order to consider the effect of winding distribution and chording on the spatial distribution of the magnetic field in the air gap of synchronous and induction machines. The sinusoidal functions for winding factor calculation presented in literature are not defined and valid for every irregular winding, e.g., single-layer fractional-slot, combined star-delta, multilayer (greater than two), and asymmetrical windings. Although the summation of induced voltage phasors (star of slots) is the most accurate method, asymmetrical windings require to be decomposed in symmetrical components. In this paper, in addition to deriving the symmetrical components for asymmetrical multiphase windings, the analytical formulation is presented to relate the harmonic content of winding functions to winding factors. The harmonic leakage factor is accurately formulated from the winding function instead of the Görges diagram without the need for summing up an infinite number of normalized winding factors quadratically. Without restriction of the number of layers and the…

Roadway-powering systems can effectively improve the driving distance of electric vehicles (EVs) while releasing the overdependence on batteries. As the key technical issue, the design of primary and pickup coils determines the dynamic charging performance. In recent years, the double-D-quadrature (DDQ) pickup coil has been increasingly utilized in EV dynamic charging systems by means of the persistence and stability of move-and-charge. However, the impact of primary coils with various topologies on DDQ pickup coils has been nearly unexplored in previous studies. Accordingly, this paper presents a comparative analysis of the circular-shaped, rectangle-shaped and multi-thread primary coils for DDQ-based roadway-powering systems with an emphasis on the transmission power, energization persistence, thermal analysis, and initial investment that aims to provide technical references for further research and development of EV dynamic wireless charging systems.

A novel model order reduction method for efficient analysis of linear eddy-current problems is proposed in which the quasi-static electromagnetic fields are expressed by a weighted sum of a sequence of static electric- and magnetic-field modes. The modes are calculated sequentially by static electric and static magnetic computations using the conventional finite-element method, and the time-dependent weights are the voltages and currents of an equivalent Cauer ladder network of the problem. Linear vernier permanent magnet machines (LVPMMs) for direct-drive servo applications are attracting more and more attentions due to its high force density, easy maintenance, rapid dynamic response, and so on. This paper proposes an LVPMM structure, which has a similar secondary as that of a regular linear PM machine, while its primary mover is composed of three modules, and the modules are separated by flux barriers. Since high-precision servo systems have rigorous demands on the force ripple of the drive motors, two methods are introduced to minimize the force ripple of the LVPMM. One is to choose an optimal length of flux barriers; the other is to change the three-phase winding connection. The effectiveness of both methods is verified by time-stepping finite element analysis. It is found that the force ripple can be reduced from 10.6% to 2.4% by the proposed two methods.

Because a synchronous reluctance motor (SynRM) does not require permanent magnets, its industrial applications focus on lowering manufacturing costs. However, the SynRM has disadvantages. It experiences a lower average torque and oscillations derived from torque ripple compared to a permanent magnet-based motor. Therefore, the improvement of torque characteristics is investigated using topology optimization (TO) method which allows a greater variety of rotor structure than the shape optimization technique and does not require the concrete initial structure. Although the level set method is well known among TO methods, the smoothed-heaviside-function-based TO implemented by method of moving asymptotes is more suitable due to the feasibility of implementing the physical structure and the convergence speed. In this paper, the reasonable structure of rotor core in SynRM is investigated using TO method to improve the torque characteristic.

Model-based calibration of a magnetic workspace not only provides a smooth representation of the field and its gradient matrix, but also uses physical constraints to smooth the calibration measurements. This paper presents the first model-based technique to calibrate a magnetic manipulation system by using nonlinear least squares to solve for a scalar potential for each source. The performance of the method is verified by comparison to numerical finite element simulation and a case study calibration of a real system, where it is able to achieve an R2value of 0.9997. Furthermore, the analytical representations for the first three spatial derivatives of a spherical multipole expansion are provided for convenience, which correspond to the torque, force, and force-spatial-rate-of-change on a magnetic dipole in the workspace.

In this paper, the different temperature dependencies of hysteresis and eddy current losses of non-oriented Si-steel laminations are investigated. The measured iron loss results show that both the hysteresis and eddy current losses vary linearly with temperature between 40 °C to 100 °C, a typical temperature range of electrical machines. Varying rates of hysteresis and eddy current losses with the temperature are different and fluctuate with flux density and frequency. Based on this, an improved iron loss model which can consider temperature dependencies of hysteresis and eddy current losses separately is developed. Based on the improved iron loss model, the temperature influence on the iron loss can be fully considered by measuring iron losses at only two different temperatures. The investigation is experimentally validated by both the tests based on a ring specimen and an electrical machine.

This paper presents the design and analysis of a novel permanent-magnet (PM)-assisted synchronous reluctance machine (PMA-SynRM) with axially integrated magnets for improving machine performance by using a finite-element method (FEM). The proposed PMA-SynRM features a simple structure with high performance by incorporating the advantages of a SynRM and a surface-mounted PM machine (SPMM). In particular, the rotor parts of the SynRM and SPMM are assembled to make the “q-axis” located 45° (elec.) from the d-axis. Thus, the magnetic torque and reluctance torque of the proposed PMA-SynRM reach the maximum values at the same current phase angle, for efficient production of the total torque. To highlight the advantages of the proposed PMA-SynRM, a conventional PMA-SynRM is adopted for comparison under the same operating conditions. The FEM analysis results finally demonstrate that the proposed PMA-SynRM has a higher total torque and power factor, as well as greatly reduced torque ripple, when compared to the conventional PMA-SynRM with the same magnet amounts. SMCs have several advantages such as low core loss and low eddy current loss. However, compared with electrical steel, SMCs have poor magnetic properties such as low flux density saturation and unsaturated relative permeability. The analysis of the electromagnetic characteristics in a wide frequency range revealed that for an AFPM using an electric steel core, the performance was excellent in a low-frequency range; however, for an AFPM using an SMC core, the performance improves with an increase in frequency. The efficiency of electromagnetic devices is influenced by the losses of the applied soft magnetic material. Different structured materials are available. Choosing the most appropriate material for a medium-frequency application is not intuitive. Electromagnetic circuits of power transformers or electric motors are usually made of conventional silicon-iron sheets. Higher power densities can be achieved by an increased operational frequency, but the loss density increases with higher frequencies as well. Amorphous and nanocrystalline materials benefit from reduced eddy current losses at higher frequencies. In this paper, a performance factor is evaluated to determine the suitability of each material in a frequency range up to 10 kHz. The geometric parameters of electromagnetic designs depend on the applied material. A performance factor may help to identify the most appropriate material at a specific frequency. This paper proposes the optimization of the shape and size of a ferrite magnet and the arrangements necessary to reduce torque ripple and maximize back electromotive force (B-EMF) in a permanent-magnet-assisted synchronous reluctance motor. First, four different models of general magnet arrangements were selected, and analysis using the finite-element method was performed under open circuit and load operations for each of the four models. Next, the relationship between the cogging torque and the torque ripple was analyzed, considering the segment saturation phenomenon. Then, based on the initial model, the design was optimized for maximum B-EMF and minimum torque ripple, and the total harmonic distortion was measured. Finally, the validity and superiority of the optimized design were confirmed by manufacturing a prototype motor and performing the experiment.

In this paper, a novel method for accelerating frequency sweeping in eddy-current calculation using finite-element method is presented. Exploiting the fact that between adjacent frequencies, the eddy-current distributions are similar, an algorithm is proposed to accelerate the frequency sweeping computation. The solution of the field quantities under each frequency, which involves solving a system of linear equations using the conjugate gradients squared (CGS) method, is accelerated by using an optimized initial guess-the final solution from the previous frequency. Numerical tests show that this treatment could speed up the convergence of the CGS solving process, i.e., reduced number of iterations reaching the same relative residuals or reaching smaller residuals with the same iteration number.

In recent decades, bearingless switched reluctance motors (BSRMs) have been proposed. However, few researchers focused on the optimal design of the BSRMs. In this paper, the multi-objective optimal design of BSRMs is investigated. At first, an analytical design model is derived from the mathematical model of the BSRMs. An initial design is calculated by the analytical design model. The electromagnetic performance is compared with calculation results from the finite-element method (FEM). Then, the objective functions, constraints, and decision variables are also determined. Corresponding sensitivity analysis of the decision variables is implemented. Besides, aiming at solving the optimization problem with disconnected, non-uniformly distributed Pareto front and multiple local optimums, a novel multi-objective genetic particle swarm optimizer (MOGPSO) is presented. The algorithm performance of the proposed MOGPSO is validated by solving the standard test functions. Then the proposed MOGPSO is applied for the optimal design of BSRMs. Optimization results solved by MOGPSO, conventional…

A nonlinear equivalent magnetic network (EMN) model is proposed for a linear permanent magnet vernier (LPMV) machine. The meshing method is employed to solve the problem of the modeling of complex flux paths in stator teeth tips. Especially, an end-region model based on the electromagnetic principle is developed to consider the longitudinal end effect of the LPMV machine. The key contribution of this paper is to present a faster and simpler approach to separate the detent force (end force component and cogging force component) than finite-element analysis (FEA). Besides, taking the iron saturation and air-gap flux leakage into account, the proposed model is used to predict the electromagnetic performances of the LPMV machine, such as air-gap flux density, back-electromotive force, cogging force, and thrust force. Finally, through comparisons among the FEA simulations, experimental measurements and EMN analyses, the accuracy and effectiveness of the proposed model are verified.

Show abstractHide abstract
A flux-reversal permanent magnet (FRPM) machine typically suffers from unfavorably large cogging torque due to its special doubly salient structure and high air-gap flux density, resulting in undesired torque and speed ripples, as well as acoustic noise and vibration, especially at low speeds. Therefore, an improved configuration of FRPM machines by introducing a small space-gap between the two adjacent magnets belonging to the same stator tooth is proposed in this paper. The analytical expression of cogging torque taking this small space gap into consideration is derived, and furthermore, the optimal dimensions of the space gap are obtained analytically for cogging torque minimization. In addition, the influences of the space-gap-based configuration on key electromagnetic performances, including cogging torque, back electromotive force, and electromagnetic torque, are investigated by both 2-D finite-element analysis and experimental results. It turns out to be that by employing this configuration, not only the cogging torque, and hence, torque ripples can be suppressed, but also…

Alternatives to rare earth permanent magnets, such as alnico, will reduce supply instability, increase sustainability, and could decrease the cost of permanent magnets, especially for high-temperature applications, such as traction drive motors. Alnico magnets with moderate coercivity, high remanence, and relatively high-energy product are conventionally processed by directional solidification and (significant) final machining, contributing to increased costs and additional material waste. Additive manufacturing (AM) is developing as a cost effective method to build net-shape 3-D parts with minimal final machining and properties comparable to wrought parts. This paper describes initial studies of net-shape fabrication of alnico magnets by AM using a laser engineered net shaping (LENS) system. High-pressure gas atomized pre-alloyed powders of two different modified alnico “8” compositions, with high purity and sphericity, were built into cylinders using the LENS process, and followed by heat treatment. The magnetic properties showed improvement over their cast and sintered…

A series hybrid variable flux memory (VFM) machine employing two kinds of permanent magnets (PMs) on alternate rotor poles is investigated. This VFM machine features controllable PM flux and thus good flux-weakening capability, as well as improved torque density. However, it is found that the unipolar end leakage flux occurs if the two kinds of PMs are not balanced. According to the analyses of series connection between two PMs based on the fundamental magnetic circuit, the mechanism of the unbalanced rotor poles and the unipolar end leakage flux is revealed. Further, the rule of obtaining balanced poles is identified and the effects of operating conditions are presented. A series hybrid VFM machine prototype is fabricated and tested.

Due to high gain and low production costs, Yagi-Uda antennas still find wide applications in wireless communication systems. The sensitivity of the gain due to variations of the element lengths and distances between the elements makes the design optimization quite challenging. In this paper, the multi-objective optimization of a six-element Yagi-Uda antenna applying an enhanced version of the firefly algorithm is proposed. The application of this optimization algorithm in the multi-objective sense allows the finding of local solutions, too. To minimize the computational time, an adaptive cost function is applied. The numerical analyses are performed by the partial element equivalent circuit method and the mutual impedance method.

The flux-switching permanent-magnet double-rotor machine (FSPM-DRM) used for hybrid electric vehicles has attracted considerable attention due to the compact structure and high torque density. Compared with conventional machine, the FSPM-DRM suffers from more severe thermal problems in its inner rotor. This paper aims to make an accurate prediction of the performances and temperature distributions in the FSPM-DRM. First, the eddy current loss in windings with an improved analytical method is discussed and the results are validated by those from a 2-D finite-element (FE) model. With the obtained power losses, the lumped-parameter scheme considering end effect is compared with a 3-D FE thermal model to predict the temperature in each part of the FSPM-DRM at hybrid driving mode, in which both yield similar results. Then the maximum temperatures of different parts at the rated load and 160% load under various operational modes are simulated. Some experimental results are reported, validating the numerical and simulated results.

This paper presents study of design characteristics with wide constant power speed range (CPSR) for electric vehicle Propulsion. Through analysis of interior permanent magnet synchronous motor (IPMSM) control logic, design characteristic of extending CPSR is proposed. To achieve wide CPSR, center of voltage limit ellipse should be placed at cross point of current limit circle and d-axis. To analyze characteristic of voltage ellipse, four types of representative IPMSM rotor topologies are selected. Through rotor topology analysis, tendency of φfand Ldsparameters which decide center of voltage limit ellipse is analyzed. This paper also considers shifting of voltage limit ellipse center according to change in motor speed. Reflecting the result, this paper focuses on center of voltage limit ellipse position at maximum speed, because central coordinates of high-speed range determine characteristics of CPSR. Through the analysis result, this paper suggests direction of IPMSM design for wide CPSR.

In order to ensure the safety of infrastructure, it is important to be able to detect both surface and inner cracks in the thick steel plates used. However, it is difficult to use conventional magnetic measurement techniques for inspecting inner cracks in steel because of its high permeability as well as owing to the variations in it. To solve this problem, we developed a method called unsaturated ac magnetic flux leakage (MFL) testing based on a magnetic resistance gradiometer for analyzing the inner cracks in steel. The proposed method uses a sensor probe consisting of a semicircular yoke with induction coils at each end, and a gradiometer with two anisotropic magnetic resistance sensors for detecting the components perpendicular to the steel surface. The conventional MFL testing method requires a strong power source for observing the MFL in the magnetic saturation region. In contrast, in this paper, a gradiometer-based method for detecting the differential intensity and phase is used to detect low levels of magnetic leakage using a weak power source when the test steel sample is…

This paper presents a new method for calculating the braking force of a drum-type eddy current brake with a two-layer structure. The drum-type eddy current brake should have a structure that improves the braking force by applying a material with high conductivity inside the drum because the eddy current loss generated from the drum is used as the braking force. In addition, because the eddy current brake operates at various speeds while braking the vehicle, it is necessary to grasp the braking force according to the speed. Furthermore, because the material of the drum is composed of non-laminated iron having conductivity, the skin effect and the armature reaction phenomenon appear, and the skin depth and the air-gap flux density are different depending on the braking speed. In this paper, the value of the eddy current loss of the eddy current brake with a copper coating inside the drum is newly presented and compared with the finite-element analysis results. In addition, the change in the speed-torque curve according to the conductivity value of the drum and inner coating material…

In permanent magnet flux-switching (PMFS) motors, both magnets and concentrated armature windings are located on the stator, which facilities the accommodation of a water cooling system. It is found that the temperature varies greatly in the PMs, since they are located between the water cooling system and armature windings that carry the heat generated by copper loss. Thus, based on the finite-element analysis, an axially segmented magnetic-thermal coupled-fields model of PMFS motor is proposed, which counts in the variations of flux density, iron loss, and temperature distributions in the axial direction. By dividing the motor into axial segments and neglecting the temperature variation along the axial direction in each segment, this new model enables the electromagnetic and thermal behaviors to be predicted more accurately than 2-D coupled-fields model, meanwhile much faster than a traditional synchronous 3-D coupled-fields model when similar accuracy is obtained. Finally, the results predicted by the new axially segmented model are validated by experimental measurements,…

Recently, overhang structures are increasingly used for various applications requiring high torque and power densities in a limited space such as traction motors of electric vehicles and servo motors of robot arms. In the design stage, overhang effects should be taken into account to predict the performances and the temperature rise of a motor with overhang. However, little research has been conducted on the thermal characteristics and analysis methods for a surface-mounted permanent-magnet (SPM) motor with overhang. To address this problem, the electromagnetic and thermal characteristics of the SPM motors with and without overhang are invested in this paper. Specifically, 3-D finite-element method is used in electromagnetic analysis to accurately calculate electromagnetic losses which are heat sources in thermal analysis. Moreover, the lumped-parameter thermal network (LPTN) which can consider overhang effects rapidly and precisely is proposed as an analytical method. Through the proposed LPTN, the computation time for thermal analysis is reduced considerably in comparison with a…

A topology optimization (TO) of synchronous motors based on the ON/OFF method to obtain practical shapes is presented in this paper. The TO using evolutionary algorithms such as genetic algorithm often yields complex shapes that are impossible to produce in an engineering sense. In the previously proposed method, lattice meshes were required for the ON/OFF method. This results in poor ability of expression for curved surfaces and restriction of mesh generation. To solve this problem, the algorithm is extended to adapt to unstructured meshes. The present method is applied to a shape optimization of synchronous motors, and optimization results show that feasible shapes are obtained and torque property is improved.

However, in actual production, the manufacturing tolerances are variable to a certain extent, which can be optimized for integrating the performance, manufacturing cost, and production quality. This paper proposes a tolerance design optimization approach by optimizing the design parameters and tolerances simultaneously based on design for six sigma technique. A permanent magnet claw pole motor with soft magnetic composite cores is optimized by using the proposed approach. For this high-dimensional optimization problem involving electromagnetic and thermal performance, Kriging model and 3-D thermal network model are employed under the multilevel framework for increasing the optimization efficiency. Finally, through the analysis, the proposed robust tolerance optimization method shows good performance with improved motor performance as well as the diversity controlling without cost increasing.

In this paper, performance comparison between surface and spoke-type flux modulation (FM) permanent magnet (PM) machines is presented. Generally, spoke-array magnet arrangement is capable of increasing the torque density of PM machines due to its flux-focusing effect. Nevertheless, a flux-barrier effect is found when this magnet topology is applied in FM machines, which may offset the advantage in torque capability when the pole ratio is high. By flux distribution comparison of these two-machine topologies, the flux-barrier effect is visually explained. Through numerical FEA, this effect is further investigated in spoke-type vernier PM machines with a series of pole ratios. Finally, compared with surface-type FM machines, considerable reduction in modulated magnetic field as well as output torque capability is verified in high pole ratio, spoke-type FM machines.

This paper presents electromagnetic modeling and analysis of the detent force in a permanent magnet linear synchronous machine (PMLSM) according to auxiliary teeth configuration. Analytical solutions for magnetic fields generated by PMs are derived based on the Maxwell equation in terms of a 2-D Cartesian coordinate system. The magnetic vector potential of each subdomain (PM, air-gap, slot, and end region) is derived, and the field solution is obtained by applying the boundary and interface conditions between the subdomains. Based on the analytical solution, the magnetic force is derived by using the Maxwell stress tensor. All the analytical results were extensively validated using nonlinear finite-element analysis and experimental results. Using the proposed method, we investigated the influence of the machine parameters on the detent force. Therefore, the proposed method can be very useful in the initial design and optimization process of PMLSM for detent force analysis.

In this paper, we propose a novel particle swarm optimization (PSO), which is based on the Euclidian distance of particles. In the conventional PSO, the convergence speed is decreased, since several particles that are far from swarm does not converge but wander around search area. The proposed algorithm, which is named after distance based intelligent PSO, assigns a new position and velocity to the furthest particle. Therefore, all particles gather around global optimum, and it is able to search for global optimum faster than that of the conventional PSO. To validate effectiveness of the proposed algorithm, we compare it to the conventional PSO using three numerical test functions. In addition, interior permanent magnet synchronous motor (IPMSM), which has characteristic of magnetic saturation in magnetic steel sheet, is chosen as target model of optimal design. Total harmonic distortion of back-electromotive force is optimized by optimization of rotor topology. Through optimal design of IPMSM, effectiveness of the proposed algorithm for electric machine design is verified.

The proposed strategy depends on electromagnetic field computations joined with analytical models. A 3-D finite-element model for 8-kW polarized double-D power pad was modeled, optimized, and built. Moreover, the choice of the power factor correction and the impedance matching elements was investigated. Following the proposed design considerations, a BIWPTS model was developed in MATLAB Simulink and its outcomes were compared with the theoretical model results. In addition, a small scale prototype was assembled using the same design with reduced dc voltage levels. The models were tested during charging and discharging operation, and good correlation was seen between every one of them.
