In the present scenario aluminium is an useful metal due its admirable properties such as light weight, low cost and excellent thermal conductivity. In order to take advantages of these properties aluminium is being used to make the metal matrix composites for tribological application, In this present investigation effort has been made to assess the wear properties of Al–B4C–Gr metal matrix composite at various temperatures such as 323° K, 373° K and 423° K. Al–B4C–Gr Hybrid metal matrix composites were fabricated by stir casting technique. The influence of parameters like load, speed, distance and temperature on the wear rate was investigated. A plan of experiments, based on Taguchi model with L27 orthogonal array and analysis of variance was employed to investigate the influence of process parameters on the wear behaviour of these hybrid metal matrix composites. The wear resistance increased with increasing temperature, but wear resistance decreased at higher loads. It was observed that the abrasive wear is dominates while sliding as observed by SEM analysis of worn out specimens.

The S-doped g-C3N4materials were prepared by heating mixtures of urea and thiourea with various weight ratios at 550 °C, and denoted as x:y SCN, where x:y is weight ratios of urea to thiourea. The obtained samples were characterized by X-ray diffraction, diffuse reflectance ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, thermogravimetric differential thermal analysis, scanning electron microscopy and infrared spectra. The results showed that all the x:y SCN materials exhibit the presence of doping S in the structure of g-C3N4and higher capability in the photodegradation of Rhodamin B in aqueous solution under visible light condition than pure g-C3N4. Among the SCN samples, 75:25 SCN performed the highest photocatalytic activity, which is believed the presence of the largest amount of doping S in the matrix of g-C3N4, leading to reduction of their bandgap. The reduction of bandgap for S-doped g-C3N4materials compared to pure g-C3N4was proved by theoretical calculation.

The need of clean and renewable energy, as well as the power shortage in Gaza strip with few wind energy studies conducted in Palestine, provide the importance of this paper. Probability density function is commonly used to represent wind speed frequency distributions for the evaluation of wind energy potential in a specific area. This study shows the analysis of the climatology of the wind profile over the State of Palestine; the selections of the suitable probability density function decrease the wind power estimation error percentage. A selection of probability density function is used to model average daily wind speed data recorded at for 10 years in Gaza strip. Weibull probability distribution function has been estimated for Gaza based on average wind speed for 10 years. This assessment is done by analyzing wind data using Weibull probability function to find out the characteristics of wind energy conversion. The wind speed data measured from January 1996 to December 2005 in Gaza is used as a sample of actual data to this study. The main aim is to use the Weibull representative…

Green sand casting is treated as the most versatile casting process due to their excellent design flexibility that offer complex shapes and ability to reclaim silica sand. The modern foundries are looking for alternate moulding materials to partially replace the high cost silica sand. Cow dung is a naturally available eco-friendly binding as well as additive material and is used to partially replace the silica sand. Improper choice of the combination of moulding sand variables, such as degree of ramming, percentage of cow dung, percentage of clay, and percent of water will affect the moulding sand properties and thereby quality of casting. In the present work, Taguchi method is employed to plan and conduct experiments. Pareto analysis of variance is performed to know the contribution of variables on the moulding sand properties (i.e. compression strength, permeability, loss-on-ignition). Taguchi DEAR method is used to determine the single optimal levels of input factors that enhances the performances of all the sand mould properties. 17 citationsdoi:10.4028/www.scientific.net/amm.889.461OpenAlex

    Show abstract

The chassis is the backbone of all automobiles. In passenger cars and buses, the chassis forms the basic shape of the vehicles and ensures the safety of passengers as well as transported goods. Most chassis have the frame structure and is manufactured using stamping and cold rolled technology to enhance the required rigidity. One of the most important criteria that chassis manufacturers consider during the design process is structural integrity: preventing failure while optimizing the use of materials. Traditional design methods requiring hand-calculations as well as experiments are less desirable because of the rising cost and time. Nowadays, with the development of numerical methods, computer capabilities and computer-aided engineering (CAE) overall, the design process has become much more efficient. This paper presents a procedure to simulate the complex dynamics of a 29-seat bus chassis using finite elements analysis in Ansys software. The results of this simulation are then used to verify the structural integrity of the chassis and support design optimizations.

In order to optimize the recycling potential of buildings, new design-tools and methods are required, whereby it is of utmost importance to have a documentation of the material composition of buildings. In this paper, the methodology for creating a BIM-based Material Passport, enabling optimization of the design of buildings and serving as a documentation of materials existing in buildings, is described. Therefore, a specific building component - the flat roof - of a residential building is used in order to test the proposed tool-chain and show the recycling potential of the built-in materials. Thereby, the recycling potential of a version in timber construction and a version in concrete construction is assessed. The results show that the two versions have a similar recycling rate. Magneto Rheological (MR) fluids are a class of smart materials where the shear stress is not directly proportional to rate of shear. The viscosity of fluid changes as magnetic field changes and hence this phenomenon is very useful in bearing-rotor system for attenuating the vibrations. In the present study the application of MR fluid as lubricant instead of Newtonian fluid in the journal bearing is explored through steady state, dynamic characteristics and stability. MR fluid film has been modeled as per Bingham rheological model. FEM with three node triangular elements has been used to solve the Reynolds equation both for the Newtonian fluid film and MR fluid film. The results show the load carrying capacity in the case of MR fluid journal bearing is higher than that of using the Newtonian fluid. The load carrying capacity increases with the increasing magnetic field for all eccentricity ratios. The results also show better stability of the bearing using MR fluid at higher eccentricity ratios. The unbalance response of the rotor mounted on the journal bearing using MR fluid is also…

Chromium plating is used widely in industry to enhance wear, abrasion resistance and to restore the dimensions of undersized parts. However, tensile residual stress always exists in chrome layer because of hydrogen embrittlement so it affect to mechanical properties of the chromium plating machine element, especially in fatigue strength. In this paper, effect of residual stress in chrome plating layer to fatigue strength was studied. The sample (AISI 1045 steel) was plated with 10 and 60 micrometers thicknesses and residual stress in chrome plating layer was determined by X-ray diffraction technique (Cu-Kα radiation). The results showed that chromium layer thicknesses go up, tensile residual stress decrease and microcrack density increase. Consequently, fatigue strength goes down when chromium layer thicknesses increase.

In the environmental analysis of buildings, Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) is gaining more and more interest. It is due to the fact, that LCA is very comprehensive in considering many impacts in all life-cycle phases of the examined building. Since buildings have a complicated geometry that is built up with numerous constructions that consist of many materials, and the life-cycle includes many phases, the results of an assessment are likely to be difficult to analyze in detail. In this paper we introduce a visual method to help architects and analysts to quickly understand the results of an environmental assessment. It includes the hierarchic visualization of the performance of the individual elements of the building. Both energy use and environmental impacts can be presented. Also the contribution of the different life-cycle phases in the overall impact is visualized. There are increasing efforts nowadays to find the most efficient way to improve the environmental performance of buildings. In the present study an attempt has been made to investigate the effect of process parameters on surface roughness and cutting forces generation in machining of Duplex Stainless Steel (DSS 2205) grade material with TiN coated carbide tool. Taguchi technique is used for optimizing the process parameters. L 27 orthogonal array was used to conduct the experimental trials. Cutting forces recorded using piezo-electric based mill tool dynamometer and surface roughness measured using surface roughness measuring instrument. The obtained results indicated that the cutting force increases with increase in feed rate and depth of cut whereas cutting forces decreases with increase in cutting speed. Surface roughness decreases with increase in cutting speed and low feed rate. Scanning Electroscope Microscopic (SEM) images indicates the feed marks, undeformed material and patches on the machined surface. The formation of material side flow and burrs on the feed marks ridges observed at higher cutting speed, low feed rate and depth of cut. It is mainly due to the material behavior like…

    Show abstract

The sealing line between two conjugated rotors is a main leakage path in the vacuum pump, however, it is unable to be adjusted before the rotor profiles are determined in the traditional rotor profile generation method. Therefore, a generation method of rotor profiles for claw-type vacuum pumps based on the sealing line is proposed in this paper. The sealing line can be firstly specified as specific segments regarding the characteristics of claw-shaped rotor profiles. By applying the enveloping theory and the cubic spline curve fitting method, the rotor profile is able to be generated from the sealing line. Moreover, the adjustment method is proposed to segmentally correct the shape of sealing line using the quadratic functions by considering the geometric limitations to avoid interference and undercutting in rotor profiles. A three-lobe claw rotors profile is carried out to demonstrate the reasonability and stability of the proposed method.

This work focuses on studying the possibility of 3D printing of composite materials composed by cork and a polymer matrix (CPC). Initially the cork was mixed with two types of polymers (HDPE and PP) in different proportions and later processed using extrusion and injection. The composites were tested to study the physical, chemical and mechanical properties. The material was then tested on a large-scale 3D printer to study its feasibility and the ability to produce new products through 3D printing. Attention was focused on the use of pure cork, varying the concentration of cork and coupling agent in thermoplastic matrix composites of PP and HDPE. It was demonstrated that the increase of 5wt.% of coupling agent in the two types of polymers significantly improved the mechanical properties and adhesion between the phases but the increase in cork concentration decreased mechanical properties and crystallinity. The CPCs with PP showed to have better mechanical properties, better aesthetic and internal structural quality, and easier processability than those with HDPE matrix.…

The twin-screw vacuum pump is widely used in low and medium-low vacuum applications. Its core element consists of a pair of rotors rotating in opposite direction on parallel axes. Screw rotors with uniform pitch are usually finished by the form grinding method, but the rotors with variable pitch are not. In this paper, a manufacturing process for generating the tooth profile of the screw rotor with variable pitch by CNC lathe turning is proposed. The initial position of turning tool and normal profile error of the manufactured screw rotors are derived and verified numerically. Numerical examples are presented to validate the proposed method. The simulation results reveal that the proposed CNC turning process is feasible and flexible.

Turmeric (Curcuma longaL.), a member of Zingiberacaeae, is used for Thai traditional medicine, flavoring, preservative, and coloring agent. In Southern Thailand, turmeric is a famous ingredient for food recipes. Not only is the ripened rhizome used for cuisine, but also the young rhizomes. Previous studies have indicated that a variety of turmeric products from the ripened rhizome are valuable source of antioxidant compounds. However, there are ambiguous data regarding the level of antioxidant activity of the young rhizome. The aim of this study was to investigate the level of total phenolic content (TPC) and antioxidant activity of the young rhizomes by comparing to the ripened rhizome. TPC and antioxidant activity of aqueous and 80% methanolic extracts from the young turmeric grown in Southern Thailand were estimated using the Folin-Ciocalteu method and DPPH free radical scavenging activity (DPPH-RSA) assay, respectively. Results showed that the concentration of TPC determined in methanolic extract (19.80±0.25 mg GAE/ g extract) from the young rhizome was significantly higher than…

Tissue Engineering depends on broadly techniques to regenerate tissues and/or organ functions. To do so, tailored polymeric and/or hydrogel scaffolds may be used to ensure the appropriate regeneration. Hydrogels are suitable materials for constructing cell-laden matrices as they can be produced with incorporation of cells and rapidly cross-linkedin situthrough photopolymerisation reactions. Measurement of the polymerization degree, as well as resistance to compression and water retention are fundamental tests to evaluate the characteristics of hydrogels. In this work, free-radical polymerisation of poly (ethylene glycol)-dimethacrylate (PEGDMA) in UV light was assessed. Several hydrogels with different photoinitiator and water contents were produced to evaluate their influence on hydrogels behaviour. Experiments showed that variations on water and photoinitiator content induce changes in the physical and chemical behaviour of hydrogels. As it was found, water content prevents polymerisation to occur and reduces the mechanical properties of hydrogels weakening them. Furthermore,…

Although most of them have good awareness to support these activities, yet there are still who abuse the usage of recycling bin by inserting prohibited items. To cater such an issue, a Reverse Vending Machine (RVM) with material identification module is proposed to accept only empty recycle items and reject the rest. The constructed system consists of rotating mechanism and collection of sensors to detect empty PET bottle and aluminum can respectively. From the experiment, it can be shown that the module capable to reject unwanted material with an average of 82.5% of accuracy. Such capability shows a promising outcome for preventing the abuse of recycling bins, and can be used to realize the RVM concept by introducing a reward to the person who recycle properly.
