Abstract Mechanochemical solvent‐free reactions by milling, grinding or other types of mechanical action have emerged as a viable alternative to solution chemistry. Mechanochemistry offers not only a possibility to eliminate the need for bulk solvent use, and reduce the generation of waste, but it also unlocks the door to a different reaction environment in which synthetic strategies, reactions and molecules previously not accessible in solution, can be achieved. This Minireview examines the potential of mechanochemistry in chemical and materials synthesis, by providing a cross‐section of the recent developments in using ball milling for the formation of molecules and materials based on covalent and coordination bonds.

Abstract Structure and defect control are widely accepted effective strategies to manipulate the activity and stability of catalysts. On a freestanding hierarchically porous carbon microstructure, the tuning of oxygen vacancy in the embedded hollow cobaltosic oxide (Co 3 O 4 ) nanoparticles is demonstrated through the regulation of nanoscale Kirkendall effect. Starting with the embedded cobalt nanoparticles, the concentration of oxygen‐vacancy defect can vary with the degree of Kirkendall oxidation, thus regulating the number of active sites and the catalytic performances. The optimized freestanding catalyst shows among the smallest reversible oxygen overpotential of 0.74 V for catalyzing oxygen reduction/evolution reactions in 0.1 m KOH. Moreover, the catalyst shows promise for substitution of noble metals to boost cathodic oxygen reactions in portable zinc–air batteries. This work provides a strategy to explore catalysts with controllable vacancy defects and desired nano‐/microstructures.

Abstract Mixed‐metal metal–organic frameworks (MM‐MOFs) can be considered to be those MOFs having two different metals anywhere in the structure. Herein we summarize the various strategies for the preparation of MM‐MOFs and some of their applications in adsorption, gas separation, and catalysis. It is shown that compared to homometallic MOFs, MM‐MOFs bring about the opportunity to take advantage of the complexity and the synergism derived from the presence of different metal ions in the structure of MOFs. This is reflected in a superior performance and even stability of MM‐MOFs respect to related single‐metal MOFs. Emphasis is made on the use of MM‐MOFs as catalysts for tandem reactions.

Abstract Small‐molecule organic fluorophores, spectrally active in the 900–1700 nm region, with tunable wavelength and sensing properties are sought‐after for in vivo optical imaging and biosensing. A panel of fluorescent dyes (CX) has been developed to meet this challenge. CX dyes exhibit the wavelength tunability of cyanine dyes and have a rigidified polymethine chain to guarantee their stability. They are chemo‐ and photo‐stable in an aqueous environment and have tunable optical properties with maximal absorbing/emitting wavelength at 1089/1140 nm. They show great potential in high‐contrast in vivo bioimaging and multicolor detection with negligible optical cross talk. Förster resonance energy transfer (FRET) between CX dyes was demonstrated in deep tissue, providing an approach for monitoring drug‐induced hepatotoxicity by detection of OONO−. This report presents a series of NIR‐II dyes with promising spectroscopic properties for high‐contrast bioimaging and multiplexed biosensing.

Abstract To promote the development of solid‐state batteries, polymer‐, oxide‐, and sulfide‐based solid‐state electrolytes (SSEs) have been extensively investigated. However, the disadvantages of these SSEs, such as high‐temperature sintering of oxides, air instability of sulfides, and narrow electrochemical windows of polymers electrolytes, significantly hinder their practical application. Therefore, developing SSEs that have a high ionic conductivity (>10−3 S cm−1), good air stability, wide electrochemical window, excellent electrode interface stability, low‐cost mass production is required. Herein we report a halide Li+ superionic conductor, Li3InCl6, that can be synthesized in water. Most importantly, the as‐synthesized Li3InCl6 shows a high ionic conductivity of 2.04×10−3 S cm−1 at 25 °C. Furthermore, the ionic conductivity can be recovered after dissolution in water. Combined with a LiNi0.8Co0.1Mn0.1O2 cathode, the solid‐state Li battery shows good cycling stability.

Abstract The general synthesis and control of the coordination environment of single‐atom catalysts (SACs) remains a great challenge. Herein, a general host–guest cooperative protection strategy has been developed to construct SACs by introducing polypyrrole (PPy) into a bimetallic metal–organic framework. As an example, the introduction of Mg 2+ in MgNi‐MOF‐74 extends the distance between adjacent Ni atoms; the PPy guests serve as N source to stabilize the isolated Ni atoms during pyrolysis. As a result, a series of single‐atom Ni catalysts (named Ni SA ‐N x ‐C) with different N coordination numbers have been fabricated by controlling the pyrolysis temperature. Significantly, the Ni SA ‐N 2 ‐C catalyst, with the lowest N coordination number, achieves high CO Faradaic efficiency (98 %) and turnover frequency (1622 h −1 ), far superior to those of Ni SA ‐N 3 ‐C and Ni SA ‐N 4 ‐C, in electrocatalytic CO 2 reduction. Theoretical calculations reveal that the low N coordination number of single‐atom Ni sites in Ni SA ‐N 2 ‐C is favorable to the formation of COOH* intermediate and thus…

Abstract A competitive complexation strategy has been developed to construct a novel electrocatalyst with Zn‐Co atomic pairs coordinated on N doped carbon support (Zn/CoN‐C). Such architecture offers enhanced binding ability of O2, significantly elongates the O−O length (from 1.23 Å to 1.42 Å), and thus facilitates the cleavage of O−O bond, showing a theoretical overpotential of 0.335 V during ORR process. As a result, the Zn/CoN‐C catalyst exhibits outstanding ORR performance in both alkaline and acid conditions with a half‐wave potential of 0.861 and 0.796 V respectively. The in situ XANES analysis suggests Co as the active center during the ORR. The assembled zinc–air battery with Zn/CoN‐C as cathode catalyst presents a maximum power density of 230 mW cm−2 along with excellent operation durability. The excellent catalytic activity in acid is also verified by H2/O2 fuel cell tests (peak power density of 705 mW cm−2).

Abstract Low‐dimensional lead halide perovskite materials recently have drawn much attention owing to the intriguing broadband emissions; however, the toxicity of lead will hinder their future development. Now, a lead‐free (C 4 H 14 N 2 ) 2 In 2 Br 10 single crystal with a unique zero‐dimensional (0D) structure constituted by [InBr 6 ] 3− octahedral and [InBr 4 ] − tetrahedral units is described. The single crystal exhibits broadband photoluminescence (PL) that spans almost the whole visible spectrum with a lifetime of 3.2 μs. Computational and experimental studies unveil that an excited‐state structural distortion in [InBr 6 ] 3− octahedral units enables the formation of intrinsic self‐trapped excitons (STEs) and thus contributing the broad emission. Furthermore, femtosecond transient absorption (fs‐TA) measurement reveals that the ultrafast STEs formation together with an efficient intersystem crossing has made a significant contribution to the long‐lived and broad STE‐based emission behavior.

Abstract Although electrocatalysts based on transition metal phosphides (TMPs) with cationic/anionic doping have been widely studied for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), the origin of performance enhancement still remains elusive mainly due to the random dispersion of dopants. Herein, we report a controllable partial phosphorization strategy to generate CoP species within the Co‐based metal‐organic framework (Co‐MOF). Density functional theory calculations and experimental results reveal that the electron transfer from CoP to Co‐MOF through N‐P/N‐Co bonds could lead to the optimized adsorption energy of H2O (ΔG ) and hydrogen (ΔGH*), which, together with the unique porous structure of Co‐MOF, contributes to the remarkable HER performance with an overpotential of 49 mV at a current density of 10 mA cm−2 in 1 m phosphate buffer solution (PBS, pH 7.0). Abstract Nanomaterials with enzyme‐like activities, coined nanozymes, have been researched widely as they offer unparalleled advantages in terms of low cost, superior activity, and high stability. The complex structure and composition of nanozymes has led to extensive investigation of their catalytic sites at an atomic scale, and to an in‐depth understanding of the biocatalysis occurring. Single‐atom catalysts (SACs), characterized by atomically dispersed active sites, have provided opportunities for mimicking metalloprotease and for bridging the gap between natural enzymes and nanozymes. In this Minireview, we illustrate the unique properties of nanozymes and we discuss recent advances in the synthesis, characterization, and applications of SACs. Subsequently, we outline the impressive progress made in single‐atom nanozymes and we discuss their applications in sensing, degradation of organic pollutants, and in therapeutic roles. Finally, we present the major challenges and opportunities remaining for a successful marriage of nanozymes and SACs.

Abstract Electrochemical conversion of CO 2 into valued products is one of the most important issues but remains a great challenge in chemistry. Herein, we report a novel synthetic approach involving prolonged thermal pyrolysis of hemin and melamine molecules on graphene for the fabrication of a robust and efficient single‐iron‐atom electrocatalyst for electrochemical CO 2 reduction. The single‐atom catalyst exhibits high Faradaic efficiency (ca. 97.0 %) for CO production at a low overpotential of 0.35 V, outperforming all Fe‐N‐C‐based catalysts. The remarkable performance for CO 2 ‐to‐CO conversion can be attributed to the presence of highly efficient singly dispersed FeN 5 active sites supported on N‐doped graphene with an additional axial ligand coordinated to FeN 4 . DFT calculations revealed that the axial pyrrolic nitrogen ligand of the FeN 5 site further depletes the electron density of Fe 3d orbitals and thus reduces the Fe–CO π back‐donation, thus enabling the rapid desorption of CO and high selectivity for CO production.

Abstract Exploring an alternative anodic reaction to produce value‐added chemicals with high selectivity, especially integrated with promoted hydrogen generation, is desirable. Herein, a selective semi‐dehydrogenation of tetrahydroisoquinolines (THIQs) is demonstrated to replace the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) for boosting H2 evolution reaction (HER) in water over a Ni2P nanosheet electrode. The value‐added semi‐dehydrogenation products, dihydroisoquinolines (DHIQs), can be selectively obtained with high yields at the anode. The controllable semi‐dehydrogenation is attributed to the in situ formed NiII/NiIII redox active species. Such a strategy can deliver a variety of DHIQs bearing electron‐withdrawing/donating groups in good yields and excellent selectivities, and can be applied to gram‐scale synthesis. A two‐electrode Ni2P bifunctional electrolyzer can produce both H2 and DHIQs with robust stability and high Faradaic efficiencies at a much lower cell voltage than that of overall water splitting.

Abstract Bimetallic cobalt‐based spinel is sparking much interest, most notably for its excellent bifunctional performance. However, the effect of Fe3+ doping in Co3O4 spinel remains poorly understood, mainly because the surface state of a catalyst is difficult to characterize. Herein, a bifunctional oxygen electrode composed of spinel Co2FeO4/(Co0.72Fe0.28)Td(Co1.28Fe0.72)OctO4 nanoparticles grown on N‐doped carbon nanotubes (NCNTs) is designed, which exhibits superior performance to state‐of‐the‐art noble metal catalysts. Theoretical calculations and magnetic measurements reveal that the introduction of Fe3+ ions into the Co3O4 network causes delocalization of the Co 3d electrons and spin‐state transition. Fe3+ ions can effectively activate adjacent Co3+ ions under the action of both spin and charge effect, resulting in the enhanced intrinsic oxygen catalytic activity of the hybrid spinel Co2FeO4. This work provides not only a promising bifunctional electrode for zinc–air batteries, but also offers a new insight to understand the Co‐Fe spinel oxides for oxygen electrocatalysis.

However, MXene oxidation in aqueous colloidal suspensions when stored in water at ambient conditions remains a challenge. It is now shown that by simply capping the edges of individual MXene flakes, Ti 3 C 2 T z and V 2 CT z , by polyanions such as polyphosphates, polysilicates or polyborates, it is possible to quite significantly reduce their propensity for oxidation even when held in aerated water for weeks. This breakthrough resulted from the realization that the edges of MXene sheets are positively charged. It is thus an example of selectively functionalizing the edges differently from the MXene sheet surfaces.

Herein, Ni–M–MOF (M=Fe, Al, Co, Mn, Zn, and Cd) NSs are reported with a thickness of only several atomic layers, prepared by a large‐scale, bottom‐up solvothermal method. The solvent mixture of N,N‐dimethylacetamide and water plays key role in controlling the formation of these two‐dimensional MOF NSs. The MOF NSs can be directly used as efficient electrocatalysts for the oxygen evolution reaction, in which the Ni–Fe–MOF NSs deliver a current density of 10 mA cm−2 at a low overpotential of 221 mV with a small Tafel slope of 56.0 mV dec−1, and exhibit excellent stability for at least 20 h without obvious activity decay. Density functional theory calculations on the energy barriers for OER occurring at different metal sites confirm that Fe is the active site for OER at Ni–Fe–MOF NSs.

Abstract Composition engineering of halide perovskite allows the tunability of the band gap over a wide range so that photons can be effectively harvested, an aspect that is of critical importance for increasing the efficiency of photocatalysis under sunlight. However, the poor stability and the low photocatalytic activity of halide perovskites prevent use of these defect‐tolerant materials in wide applications involving photocatalysis. Here, an alcohol‐based photocatalytic system for dye degradation demonstrated high stability through the use of double perovskite of Cs2AgBiBr6. The reaction rate on Cs2AgBiBr6 is comparable to that on CdS, a model inorganic semiconductor photocatalyst. The fact of fast reaction between free radicals and dye molecules indicates the unique catalytic properties of the Cs2AgBiBr6 surface. Deposition of metal clusters onto Cs2AgBiBr6 effectively enhances the photocatalytic activity. Although the stability (five consecutive photocatalytic cycles without obvious decrease of efficiency) requires further improvements, the results indicate the significant…

Abstract The controllable growth of CsPbI3 perovskite thin films with desired crystal phase and morphology is crucial for the development of high efficiency inorganic perovskite solar cells (PSCs). The role of dimethylammonium iodide (DMAI) used in CsPbI3 perovskite fabrication was carefully investigated. We demonstrated that the DMAI is an effective volatile additive to manipulate the crystallization process of CsPbI3 inorganic perovskite films with different crystal phases and morphologies. The thermogravimetric analysis results indicated that the sublimation of DMAI is sensitive to moisture, and a proper atmosphere is helpful for the DMAI removal. The time‐of‐flight secondary ion mass spectrometry and nuclear magnetic resonance results confirmed that the DMAI additive would not alloy into the crystal lattice of CsPbI3 perovskite. Moreover, the DMAI residues in CsPbI3 perovskite can deteriorate the photovoltaic performance and stability. Finally, the PSCs based on phenyltrimethylammonium chloride passivated CsPbI3 inorganic perovskite achieved a record champion efficiency up to…

Abstract Encapsulation of active biomolecules and/or nanoparticles in metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) remains a great challenge in biomedical applications. In this work, through a stepwise in situ growth method, a black phosphorus quantum dot (BQ) and catalase were precisely encapsulated into the inner and outer layers of MOFs, respectively. The integrated MOF system as a tandem catalyst could convert H2O2 into O2 in MOF‐stabilized catalase outer layer, and then O2 was directly injected into MOF‐sensitized BQ inner, leading to high quantum yield of singlet oxygen. Upon internalization, the photodynamic therapy efficiency of the MOF system was 8.7‐fold greater than that without catalase, showing an enhanced therapeutic effect against hypoxic tumor cells. Furthermore, by coupling with photothermal therapy of BQs, photodynamic‐thermal synergistic therapy was realized both in vitro and in vivo.

Abstract An accurate, rapid, and cost‐effective biosensor for the quantification of disease biomarkers is vital for the development of early‐diagnostic point‐of‐care systems. The recent discovery of the trans‐cleavage property of CRISPR type V effectors makes CRISPR a potential high‐accuracy bio‐recognition tool. Herein, a CRISPR‐Cas12a (cpf1) based electrochemical biosensor (E‐CRISPR) is reported, which is more cost‐effective and portable than optical‐transduction‐based biosensors. Through optimizing the in vitro trans‐cleavage activity of Cas12a, E‐CRIPSR was used to detect viral nucleic acids, including human papillomavirus 16 (HPV‐16) and parvovirus B19 (PB‐19), with a picomolar sensitivity. An aptamer‐based E‐CRISPR cascade was further designed for the detection of transforming growth factor β1 (TGF‐β1) protein in clinical samples. As demonstrated, E‐CRISPR could enable the development of portable, accurate, and cost‐effective point‐of‐care diagnostic systems.

Abstract Rechargeable aqueous zinc‐ion batteries have been considered as a promising candidate for next‐generation batteries. However, the formation of zinc dendrites are the most severe problems limiting their practical applications. To develop stable zinc metal anodes, a synergistic method is presented that combines the Cu‐Zn solid solution interface on a copper mesh skeleton with good zinc affinity and a polyacrylamide electrolyte additive to modify the zinc anode, which can greatly reduce the overpotential of the zinc nucleation and increase the stability of zinc deposition. The as‐prepared zinc anodes show a dendrite‐free plating/stripping behavior over a wide range of current densities. The symmetric cell using this dendrite‐free anode can be cycled for more than 280 h with a very low voltage hysteresis (93.1 mV) at a discharge depth of 80 %. The high capacity retention and low polarization are also realized in Zn/MnO2 full cells.

Abstract Solid‐state materials with efficient room‐temperature phosphorescence (RTP) emissions have found widespread applications in materials science, while liquid or solution‐phase pure organic RTP emission systems has been rarely reported, because of the nonradiative decay and quenchers from the liquid medium. Reported here is the first example of visible‐light‐excited pure organic RTP in aqueous solution by using a supramolecular host‐guest assembly strategy. The unique cucurbit[8]uril‐mediated quaternary stacking structure allows tunable photoluminescence and visible‐light excitation, enabling the fabrication of multicolor hydrogels and cell imaging. The present assembly‐induced emission approach, as a proof of concept, contributes to the construction of novel metal‐free RTP systems with tunable photoluminescence in aqueous solution, providing broad opportunities for further applications in biological imaging, detection, optical sensors, and so forth.

Abstract Solar energy‐driven conversion of CO2 into fuels with H2O as a sacrificial agent is a challenging research field in photosynthesis. Herein, a series of crystalline porphyrin‐tetrathiafulvalene covalent organic frameworks (COFs) are synthesized and used as photocatalysts for reducing CO2 with H2O, in the absence of additional photosensitizer, sacrificial agents, and noble metal co‐catalysts. The effective photogenerated electrons transfer from tetrathiafulvalene to porphyrin by covalent bonding, resulting in the separated electrons and holes, respectively, for CO2 reduction and H2O oxidation. By adjusting the band structures of TTCOFs, TTCOF‐Zn achieved the highest photocatalytic CO production of 12.33 μmol with circa 100 % selectivity, along with H2O oxidation to O2. Furthermore, DFT calculations combined with a crystal structure model confirmed the structure–function relationship. Our work provides a new sight for designing more efficient artificial crystalline photocatalysts.

Abstract In this study, mechanical vibration is used for hydrogen generation and decomposition of dye molecules, with the help of BiFeO3 (BFO) square nanosheets. A high hydrogen production rate of ≈124.1 μmol g−1 is achieved under mechanical vibration (100 W) for 1 h at the resonant frequency of the BFO nanosheets. The decomposition ratio of Rhodamine B dye reaches up to ≈94.1 % after mechanical vibration of the BFO catalyst for 50 min. The vibration‐induced catalysis of the BFO square nanosheets may be attributed to the piezocatalytic properties of BFO and the high specific surface area of the nanosheets. The uncompensated piezoelectric charges on the surfaces of BFO nanosheets induced by mechanical vibration result in a built‐in electric field across the nanosheets. Unlike a photocatalyst for water splitting, which requires a proper band edge position for hydrogen evolution, such a requirement is not needed in piezocatalytic water splitting, where the band tilting under the induced piezoelectric field will make the conduction band of BFO more negative than the H2/H2O redox…

Abstract Hierarchical hollow structures for electrode materials of supercapacitors could enlarge the surface area, accelerate the transport of ions and electrons, and accommodate volume expansion during cycling. Besides, construction of heterostructures would enhance the internal electric fields to regulate the electronic structures. All these features of hierarchical hollow heterostructures are beneficial for promoting the electrochemical properties and stability of electrode materials for high‐performance supercapacitors. Herein, CoO/Co‐Cu‐S hierarchical tubular heterostructures (HTHSs) composed of nanoneedles are prepared by an efficient multi‐step approach. Abstract The size effect of transition‐metal nanoparticles on electrocatalytic performance remains ambiguous especially when decreasing the size to the atomic level. Herein, we report the spatial isolation of cobalt species on the atomic scale, which was achieved by tuning the zinc dopant content in predesigned bimetallic Zn/Co zeolitic imidazole frameworks (ZnCo‐ZIFs), and led to the synthesis of nanoparticles, atomic clusters, and single atoms of Co catalysts on N‐doped porous carbon. This synthetic strategy allowed an investigation of the size effect on electrochemical behavior from nanometer to Ångström dimensions. Single‐atom Co catalysts showed superior bifunctional ORR/OER activity, durability, and reversibility in Zn–air batteries compared with the other derivatives and noble‐metal Pt/C+RuO2, which was attributed to the high reactivity and stability of isolated single Co atoms. Our findings open up a new avenue to regulate the metal particle size and catalytic performance of MOF derivatives.

Abstract Aggregation‐induced emission (AIE) is a photoluminescence phenomenon in which an AIE luminogen (AIEgen) exhibits intense emission in the aggregated or solid state but only weak or no emission in the solution state. Understanding the mechanism of AIE requires consideration of excited state molecular geometry (for example, a π twist). This Minireview examines the history of AIEgens with a focus on the representative AIEgen, tetraphenylethylene (TPE). The mechanisms of solution‐state quenching are reviewed and the crucial role of excited‐state molecular transformations for AIE is discussed. Finally, recent progress in understanding the relationship between excited state molecular transformations and AIE is overviewed for a range of different AIEgens.

Though the flourishment of narrow‐band emissive materials with multi‐resonance induced thermally activated delayed fluorescence (MR‐TADF) in the blue region, such materials have not validated their potential in other color regions. By amplifying the influence of skeleton and peripheral units, a series of highly efficient green‐emitting MR‐TADF materials are firstly reported. Peripheral units with electron‐deficit properties can significantly narrow the energy gap for bathochromic emission without compromising the color fidelity. MR‐TADF emitters with photo‐luminance quantum yields of above 90 % with FWHMs of ≤25 nm are developed. The corresponding organic light‐emitting diodes show maximum external quantum efficiency/ power efficiency of 22.02 %/ 69.82 lm W −1 with excellent long‐term stability.

Abstract Fe‐N‐C catalysts containing atomic FeN x sites are promising candidates as precious‐metal‐free catalysts for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) in proton exchange membrane fuel cells. The durability of Fe‐N‐C catalysts in fuel cells has been extensively studied using accelerated stress tests (AST). Herein we reveal stronger degradation of the Fe‐N‐C structure and four‐times higher ORR activity loss when performing load cycling AST in O 2 ‐ vs. Ar‐saturated pH 1 electrolyte. Raman spectroscopy results show carbon corrosion after AST in O 2 , even when cycling at low potentials, while no corrosion occurred after any load cycling AST in Ar. The load‐cycling AST in O 2 leads to loss of a significant fraction of FeN x sites, as shown by energy dispersive X‐ray spectroscopy analyses, and to the formation of Fe oxides. The results support that the unexpected carbon corrosion occurring at such low potential in the presence of O 2 is due to reactive oxygen species produced between H 2 O 2 and Fe sites via Fenton reactions.

Abstract The development of metal‐N‐C materials as efficient non‐precious metal (NPM) catalysts for catalysing the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) as alternatives to platinum is important for the practical use of proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs). However, metal‐N‐C materials have high structural heterogeneity. As a result of their high‐temperature synthesis they often consist of metal‐Nx sites and graphene‐encapsulated metal nanoparticles. Thus it is hard to identify the active structure of metal‐N‐C catalysts. Herein, we report a low‐temperature NH4Cl‐treatment to etch out graphene‐encapsulated nanoparticles from metal‐N‐C catalysts without destruction of co‐existing atomically dispersed metal‐Nx sites. Catalytic activity is much enhanced by this selective removal of metallic nanoparticles. Accordingly, we can confirm the spectator role of graphene‐encapsulated nanoparticles and the pivotal role of metal‐Nx sites in the metal‐N‐C materials for ORR in the acidic medium.

Abstract It is highly desirable but challenging to optimize the structure of photocatalysts at the atomic scale to facilitate the separation of electron–hole pairs for enhanced performance. Now, a highly efficient photocatalyst is formed by assembling single Pt atoms on a defective TiO 2 support (Pt 1 /def‐TiO 2 ). Apart from being proton reduction sites, single Pt atoms promote the neighboring TiO 2 units to generate surface oxygen vacancies and form a Pt‐O‐Ti 3+ atomic interface. Experimental results and density functional theory calculations demonstrate that the Pt‐O‐Ti 3+ atomic interface effectively facilitates photogenerated electrons to transfer from Ti 3+ defective sites to single Pt atoms, thereby enhancing the separation of electron–hole pairs. This unique structure makes Pt 1 /def‐TiO 2 exhibit a record‐level photocatalytic hydrogen production performance with an unexpectedly high turnover frequency of 51423 h −1 , exceeding the Pt nanoparticle supported TiO 2 catalyst by a factor of 591.

Funneling and functionalization of a mixture of lignin-derived monomers into a single high-value chemical is fascinating. Reported herein is a three-step strategy for the production of terephthalic acid (TPA) from lignin-derived monomer mixtures, in which redundant, non-uniform substitutes such as methoxy groups are removed and the desired carboxy groups are introduced. This strategy begins with the hydro-treatment of corn-stover-derived lignin oil over a supported molybdenum catalyst to selectively remove methoxy groups. The generated 4-alkylphenols are converted into 4-alkylbenzoic acids by carbonylation with carbon monoxide. The Co-Mn-Br catalyst then oxidizes various alkyl chains into carboxy groups, transforming the 4-alkylbenzoic acid mixture into a single product: TPA. For this route, the overall yields of TPA based on lignin content of corn stover could reach 15.5 wt %, and importantly, TPA with greater than 99 % purity was obtained simply by first decanting the reaction mixture and then washing the solid product with water.

Abstract The reaction of precursors containing both nitrogen and oxygen atoms with Ni II under 500 °C can generate a N/O mixing coordinated Ni‐N 3 O single‐atom catalyst (SAC) in which the oxygen atom can be gradually removed under high temperature due to the weaker Ni−O interaction, resulting in a vacancy‐defect Ni‐N 3 ‐V SAC at Ni site under 800 °C. For the reaction of Ni II with the precursor simply containing nitrogen atoms, only a no‐vacancy‐defect Ni‐N 4 SAC was obtained. Experimental and DFT calculations reveal that the presence of a vacancy‐defect in Ni‐N 3 ‐V SAC can dramatically boost the electrocatalytic activity for CO 2 reduction, with extremely high CO 2 reduction current density of 65 mA cm −2 and high Faradaic efficiency over 90 % at −0.9 V vs. RHE, as well as a record high turnover frequency of 1.35×10 5 h −1 , much higher than those of Ni‐N 4 SAC, and being one of the best reported electrocatalysts for CO 2 ‐to‐CO conversion to date.

Abstract Rechargeable aqueous zinc‐ion batteries are attractive because of their inherent safety, low cost, and high energy density. However, viable cathode materials (such as vanadium oxides) suffer from strong Coulombic ion–lattice interactions with divalent Zn2+, thereby limiting stability when cycled at a high charge/discharge depth with high capacity. A synthetic strategy is reported for an oxygen‐deficient vanadium oxide cathode in which facilitated Zn2+ reaction kinetic enhance capacity and Zn2+ pathways for high reversibility. The benefits for the robust cathode are evident in its performance metrics; the aqueous Zn battery shows an unprecedented stability over 200 cycles with a high specific capacity of approximately 400 mAh g−1, achieving 95 % utilization of its theoretical capacity, and a long cycle life up to 2 000 cycles at a high cathode utilization efficiency of 67 %. Abstract Low‐dimensional metal halides have recently attracted extensive attention owing to their unique structure and photoelectric properties. Herein, we report the colloidal synthesis of all‐inorganic low‐dimensional cesium copper halide nanocrystals (NCs) by adopting a hot‐injection approach. Using the same reactants and ligands, but different reaction temperatures, both 1D CsCu2I3 nanorods and 0D Cs3Cu2I5 NCs can be prepared. Density functional theory indicates that the reduced dimensionality in 1D CsCu2I3 compared to 0D Cs3Cu2I5 makes the excitons more localized, which accounts for the strong emission of 0D Cs3Cu2I5 NCs. Subsequent optical characterization reveals that the highly luminescent, strongly Stokes‐shifted broadband emission of 0D Cs3Cu2I5 NCs arises from the self‐trapped excitons. Our findings not only present a method to control the synthesis of low‐dimensional cesium copper halide nanocrystals but also highlight the potential of 0D Cs3Cu2I5 NCs in optoelectronics.

Herein we report iridium‐containing strontium titanates (Ir‐STO) as active and stable, low‐iridium perovskite electrocatalysts for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) in acid. The Ir‐STO contains 57 wt % less iridium relative to the benchmark catalyst IrO 2 , but it exhibits more than 10 times higher catalytic activity for OER. It is shown to be among the most efficient iridium‐based oxide electrocatalysts for OER in acid. Theoretical results reveal that the incorporation of iridium dopants in the STO matrix activates the intrinsically inert titanium sites, strengthening the surface oxygen adsorption on titanium sites and thereby giving nonprecious titanium catalytic sites that have activities close to or even better than iridium sites.

Abstract Nickel iron oxide is considered a benchmark nonprecious catalyst for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER). However, the nature of the active site in nickel iron oxide is heavily debated. Here we report direct spectroscopic evidence for the different active sites in Fe‐free and Fe‐containing Ni oxides. Ultrathin layered double hydroxides (LDHs) were used as defined samples of metal oxide catalysts, and 18O‐labeling experiments in combination with in situ Raman spectroscopy were employed to probe the role of lattice oxygen as well as an active oxygen species, NiOO−, in the catalysts. Our data show that lattice oxygen is involved in the OER for Ni and NiCo LDHs, but not for NiFe and NiCoFe LDHs. Moreover, NiOO− is a precursor to oxygen for Ni and NiCo LDHs, but not for NiFe and NiCoFe LDHs. These data indicate that bulk Ni sites in Ni and NiCo oxides are active and evolve oxygen via a NiOO− precursor. Fe incorporation not only dramatically increases the activity, but also changes the nature of the active sites.

Rb3YSi2O7:Eu exhibits a broad emission band atλmax=622 nm under 450 nm excitation, and structural analysis and DFT calculations support the concept that Eu2+ions preferably occupy RbO6and YO6polyhedra and show the characteristic red emission band of Eu2+. The excellent thermal quenching resistance, high color‐rendering index Ra(93), and low CCT (4013 K) of the WLEDs clearly demonstrate that site engineering of rare‐earth phosphors is an effective strategy to target tailored optical performance.

Abstract Lithium–sulfur batteries (LSBs) are cost‐effective and high‐energy‐density batteries. However, the insulating nature of active materials, the shuttle effect, and slow redox kinetics lead to severe capacity decay and low rate capabilities. Numerous multimodal approaches have been attempted to tackle these issues and have pushed the cycle stability and energy density to higher levels. Recently, accelerating the redox kinetics using catalytic materials has been considered as a means to realize high‐performance LSBs. In this Minireview, we provide an insightful overview of the advances in the design of LSB catalytic materials and mechanistic descriptions of their catalytic activities.

Abstract We report a molecular design and concept using π‐system elongation and steric effects from helicenes surrounding a triphenylene core toward stable chiral polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) with a maximal π‐distortion to tackle their aromaticity, supramolecular and molecular properties. The selective syntheses, and the structural, conformational and chiroptical properties of two diastereomeric large multi‐helicenes of formula C90H48having a triphenylene core and embedding three [5]helicene units on their inner edges and three [7]helicene units at their periphery are reported based on diastereoselective and, when applicable, enantiospecific Yamamoto‐type cyclotrimerizations of racemic or enantiopure 9,10‐dibromo[7]helicene. Both molecules have an extremely distorted triphenylene core, and one of them exhibits the largest torsion angle recorded so far for a benzene ring (twist=36.9°).

Abstract Conjugated polymers have emerged as promising candidates for photocatalytic H2 production owing to their structural designability and functional diversity. However, the fast recombination of photoexcited electrons and holes limits their H2 production rates. We have now designed molecular heterostructures of covalent triazine frameworks to facilitate charge‐carrier separation and promote photocatalytic H2 production. Benzothiadiazole and thiophene moieties were selectively incorporated into the covalent triazine frameworks as electron‐withdrawing and electron‐donating units, respectively, by a sequential polymerization strategy. The resulting hybrids exhibited much improved charge‐carrier‐separation efficiency as evidenced by photophysical and electrochemical characterization. An H2 evolution rate of 6.6 mmol g−1 h−1 was measured for the optimal sample under visible‐light irradiation (λ>420 nm), which is far superior to that of most reported conjugated‐polymer photocatalysts.

Abstract Cobalt spinel oxides are a class of promising transition metal (TM) oxides for catalyzing oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Their catalytic activity depends on the electronic structure. In a spinel oxide lattice, each oxygen anion is shared amongst its four nearest transition metal cations, of which one is located within the tetrahedral interstices and the remaining three cations are in the octahedral interstices. This work uncovered the influence of oxygen anion charge distribution on the electronic structure of the redox‐active building block Co−O. The charge of oxygen anion tends to shift toward the octahedral‐occupied Co instead of tetrahedral‐occupied Co, which hence produces strong orbital interaction between octahedral Co and O. Thus, the OER activity can be promoted by pushing more Co into the octahedral site or shifting the oxygen charge towards the redox‐active metal center in CoO6 octahedra.

Abstract Two‐dimensional nanosheets have shown great potential for separation applications because of their exceptional molecular transport properties. Nanosheet materials such as graphene oxides, metal–organic frameworks, and covalent organic frameworks display unique, precise, and fast molecular transport through nanopores and/or nanochannels. However, the dimensional instability of nanosheets in harsh environments diminishes the membrane performance and hinders their long‐term operation in various applications such as gas separation, water desalination, and ion separation. Recent progress in nanosheet membranes has included modification by crosslinking and functionalization that has improved the stability of the membranes, their separation functionality, and the scalability of membrane formation while the membranes’ excellent molecular transport properties are retained. These improvements have enhanced the potential of nanosheet membranes in practical applications such as separation processes.

Abstract Carbon aerogels (CAs) with 3D interconnected networks hold promise for application in areas such as pollutant treatment, energy storage, and electrocatalysis. In spite of this, it remains challenging to synthesize high‐performance CAs on a large scale in a simple and sustainable manner. We report an eco‐friendly method for the scalable synthesis of ultralight and superporous CAs by using cheap and widely available agarose (AG) biomass as the carbon precursor. Zeolitic imidazolate framework‐8 (ZIF‐8) with high porosity is introduced into the AG aerogels to increase the specific surface area and enable heteroatom doping. After pyrolysis under inert atmosphere, the ZIF‐8/AG‐derived nitrogen‐doped CAs show a highly interconnected porous mazelike structure with a low density of 24 mg cm−3, a high specific surface area of 516 m2 g−1, and a large pore volume of 0.58 cm−3 g−1. The resulting CAs exhibit significant potential for application in the adsorption of organic pollutants.

However, the relatively low catalytic activity of nanozymes in the tumor microenvironment (TME) has limited their applications. Herein, we report a novel nanozyme (PtFe@Fe3O4) with dual enzyme‐like activities for highly efficient tumor catalytic therapy. PtFe@Fe3O4 shows the intrinsic photothermal effect as well as photo‐enhanced peroxidase‐like and catalase‐like activities in the acidic TME, thereby effectively killing tumor cells and overcoming the tumor hypoxia. Importantly, a possible photo‐enhanced synergistic catalytic mechanism of PtFe@Fe3O4 was first disclosed. We believe that this work will advance the development of nanozymes in tumor catalytic therapy.

Abstract The transition of peptides and proteins from the solution phase into fibrillar structures is a general phenomenon encountered in functional and aberrant biology and is increasingly exploited in soft materials science. However, the fundamental molecular events underpinning the early stages of their assembly and subsequent growth have remained challenging to elucidate. Here, we show that liquid–liquid phase separation into solute‐rich and solute‐poor phases is a fundamental step leading to the nucleation of supramolecular nanofibrils from molecular building blocks, including peptides and even amphiphilic amino acids. The solute‐rich liquid droplets act as nucleation sites, allowing the formation of thermodynamically favorable nanofibrils following Ostwald's step rule. The transition from solution to liquid droplets is entropy driven while the transition from liquid droplets to nanofibrils is mediated by enthalpic interactions and characterized by structural reorganization. These findings shed light on how the nucleation barrier toward the formation of solid phases can be…

Abstract It is essential to develop a facile and effective method to enhance the electrochemical performance of lithium metal anodes for building high‐energy‐density Li‐metal based batteries. Herein, we explored the temperature‐dependent Li nucleation and growth behavior and constructed a dendrite‐free Li metal anode by elevating temperature from room temperature (20 °C) to 60 °C. A series of ex situ and in situ microscopy investigations demonstrate that increasing Li deposition temperature results in large nuclei size, low nucleation density, and compact growth of Li metal. We reveal that the enhanced lithiophilicity and the increased Li‐ion diffusion coefficient in aprotic electrolytes at high temperature are essential factors contributing to the dendrite‐free Li growth behavior. As anodes in both half cells and full cells, the compact deposited Li with minimized specific surface area delivered high Coulombic efficiencies and long cycling stability at 60 °C.

Abstract Carbon dots (CDs) have attracted attention in metal‐free afterglow materials, but most CDs were heteroatom‐containing and the afterglow emissions are still limited to the short‐wavelength region. A universal approach to activate the room‐temperature phosphorescence (RTP) of both heteroatom‐free and heteroatom‐containing CDs was developed by one‐step heat treatment of CDs and boric acid (BA). The introduction of an electron‐withdrawing boron atom in composites can greatly reduce the energy gap between the singlet and triplet state; the formed glassy state can effectively protect the excited triplet states of CDs from nonradiative deactivation. A universal host for embedding CDs to achieve long‐lifetime and multi‐color (blue, green, green‐yellow and orange) RTP via a low cost, quick and facile process was developed. Based on their distinctive RTP performances, the applications of these CD‐based RTP materials in information encryption and decryption are also proposed and demonstrated.

To date, limited numbers of 2D MOFs nanosheets can be obtained through top‐down or bottom‐up synthesis strategies. Herein, we report a 2D oxide sacrifice approach (2dOSA) to facilely synthesize ultrathin MOF‐74 and BTC MOF nanosheets with a flexible combination of metal sites, which cannot be obtained through the delamination of their bulk counterparts (top‐down) or the conventional solvothermal method (bottom‐up). Abstract The electrocatalytic urea oxidation reaction (UOR) provides more economic electrons than water oxidation for various renewable energy‐related systems owing to its lower thermodynamic barriers. However, it is limited by sluggish reaction kinetics, especially by CO2 desorption steps, masking its energetic advantage compared with water oxidation. Now, a lattice‐oxygen‐involved UOR mechanism on Ni4+ active sites is reported that has significantly faster reaction kinetics than the conventional UOR mechanisms. Combined DFT, 18O isotope‐labeling mass spectrometry, and in situ IR spectroscopy show that lattice oxygen is directly involved in transforming *CO to CO2 and accelerating the UOR rate. The resultant Ni4+ catalyst on a glassy carbon electrode exhibits a high current density (264 mA cm−2 at 1.6 V versus RHE), outperforming the state‐of‐the‐art catalysts, and the turnover frequency of Ni4+ active sites towards UOR is 5 times higher than that of Ni3+ active sites.

Abstract Precise control over signal amplification provides unparalleled opportunities for diverse applications. However, spatiotemporally controlled amplification has not been realized because of the lack of a design methodology. The aim of this study was thus to develop a conceptual approach for remote control over signal amplification at a chosen time and site in living cells. This system was constructed by re‐engineering the functional units of the hybridization chain reaction (HCR) and combination with upconversion photochemistry, thus resulting in an activatable HCR with the high spatial and temporal precision of near‐infrared (NIR) light. As a proof of concept, we demonstrate the spatially and temporally resolved amplified imaging of messenger RNA (mRNA) with ultrahigh sensitivity in vitro and in vivo. Furthermore, by using a system targeting subcellular sites we have developed a new technique for NIR‐initiated amplified imaging of mRNA exclusively within a specific organelle.

Abstract The fundamental understanding and rational manipulation of catalytic site preference at extended solid surfaces is crucial in the search for advanced catalysts. Herein we find that the Ru top sites at metallic ruthenium surface have efficient Pt‐like activity for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), but they are subordinate to their adjacent, less active Ru3‐hollow sites due to the stronger hydrogen‐binding ability of the latter. We also present an interstitial incorporation strategy for the promotion of the Ru top sites from subordinate to dominant character, while maintaining Pt‐like catalytic activity. Our combined theoretical and experimental studies further identify intermetallic RuSi as a highly active, non‐Pt material for catalyzing the HER, because of its suitable electronic structure governed by a good balance of ligand and strain effects.

However, the effects that irreversible oxidation have on the surface chemistry and electrochemical properties of MXenes are still not understood. Abstract The oxygen evolution reaction (OER) has been explored extensively for reliable hydrogen supply to boost the energy conversion efficiency. The superior OER performance of newly developed non‐noble metal electrocatalysts has concealed the identification of the real active species of the catalysts. Now, the critical active phase in nickel‐based materials (represented by NiNPS) was directly identified by observing the dynamic surface reconstruction during the harsh OER process via combining in situ Raman tracking and ex situ microscopy and spectroscopy analyses. The irreversible phase transformation from NiNPS to α‐Ni(OH)2 and reversible phase transition between α‐Ni(OH)2 and γ‐NiOOH prior to OER demonstrate γ‐NiOOH as the key active species for OER. The hybrid catalyst exhibits 48‐fold enhanced catalytic current at 300 mV and remarkably reduced Tafel slope to 46 mV dec−1, indicating the greatly accelerated catalytic kinetics after surface evolution.

However, the fabrication of Zn–N–C catalysts with a high Zn loading remains a formidable challenge owing to the high volatility of the Zn precursor during high‐temperature annealing. Herein, we report that an atomically dispersed Zn–N–C catalyst with an ultrahigh Zn loading of 9.33 wt % could be successfully prepared by simply adopting a very low annealing rate of 1° min−1. Further experiments and DFT calculations demonstrated that the Zn–N–C catalyst was less susceptible to protonation than the corresponding Fe–N–C catalyst in an acidic medium. Abstract Solar‐driven interfacial water evaporation yield is severely limited by the low efficiency of solar thermal energy. Herein, the injection control technique (ICT) achieves a capillary water state in rGO foam and effectively adjusts the water motion mode therein. Forming an appropriate amount of capillary water in the 3D graphene foam can greatly increase the vapor escape channel, by ensuring that the micrometer‐sized pore channels do not become completely blocked by water and by exposing as much evaporation area as possible while preventing solar heat from being used to heat excess water. The rate of solar steam generation can reach up to 2.40 kg m−2 h−1 under solar illumination of 1 kW m−2, among the best values reported. In addition, solar thermal efficiency approaching 100 % is achieved. This work enhances solar water‐evaporation performance and promotes the application of solar‐driven evaporation systems made of carbon‐based materials.

Abstract A novel noncentrosymmetric (NCS) polar fluoride sulfate, CsSbF 2 SO 4 , was obtained by ionothermal synthesis. A meticulously designed co‐substitution approach was used to successfully replace the [TiO 6 ] 8− and [PO 4 ] 3− functional groups in KTiOPO 4 (KTP) with [SbO 4 F 2 ] 7− and [SO 4 ] 2− units, respectively. The structure of CsSbF 2 SO 4 features a pseudo‐3D framework consisting of interconnected 1D [SbF 2 O 2 SO 4 ] 5− chains of corner‐sharing [SbO 4 F 2 ] 7− octahedra and [SO 4 ] 2− tetrahedra. The title compound exhibits a sharply enlarged band gap compared to its parent compound, KTP, benefitting from the introduction of F − ions and the displacement of Sb 3+ cations. Second harmonic generation (SHG) measurements manifested that CsSbF 2 SO 4 is phase‐matchable and revealed a strong SHG response of about 3.0 KH 2 PO 4 (KDP), which is the highest value reported for any metal sulfate reported to date. The reported fluoride sulfate is a promising near ultraviolet (UV) nonlinear optical (NLO) material.

Abstract Low‐dimensional luminescent lead halide perovskites have attracted tremendous attention for their fascinating optoelectronic properties, while the toxicity of lead is still considered a drawback. Herein, we report a novel lead‐free zero‐dimensional (0D) indium‐based perovskite (Cs2InBr5⋅H2O) single crystal that is red‐luminescent with a high photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) of 33 %. Experimental and computational studies reveal that the strong PL emission might originate from self‐trapping excitons (STEs) that result from an excited‐state structural deformation. More importantly, the in situ transformation between hydrated Cs2InBr5⋅H2O and the dehydrated form is accompanied with a switchable dual emission, which enables it to act as a PL water‐sensor in humidity detection or the detection of traces of water in organic solvents.

Abstract Confinement of noble nanometals in a zeolite matrix is a promising way to special types of catalysts that show significant advantages in size control, site adjustment, and nano‐architecture design. The beauty of zeolite‐confined noble metals lies in their unique confinement effects on a molecular scale, and thus enables spatially confined catalysis akin to enzyme catalysis. In this Minireview, the confined synthesis strategies of zeolite‐confined noble metals will be briefly discussed, showing the processes, advantages, features, and mechanisms. The confined catalysis carried on zeolite‐confined noble metals will be summarized, and great emphasis will be paid to the confinement effects involving size, encapsulation, recognition, and synergy. Great progress of atomic sites in the size effect, supercage stabilization in the encapsulation effect, site adsorption in the recognition effect, and cascade reaction in the synergy effect are highlighted. This Minireview is concluded with challenges and opportunities in terms of the synthesis of zeolite‐confined noble metals and their…

Abstract Black phosphorene has attracted much attention as a semiconducting two‐dimensional material. Violet phosphorus is another layered semiconducting phosphorus allotrope with unique electronic and optoelectronic properties. However, no confirmed violet crystals or reliable lattice structure of violet phosphorus had been obtained. Now, violet phosphorus single crystals were produced and the lattice structure has been obtained by single‐crystal x ‐ray diffraction to be monoclinic with space group of P 2/ n (13) ( a =9.210, b =9.128, c =21.893 Å, β =97.776°). The lattice structure obtained was confirmed to be reliable and stable. The optical band gap of violet phosphorus is around 1.7 eV, which is slightly larger than the calculated value. The thermal decomposition temperature was 52 °C higher than its black phosphorus counterpart, which was assumed to be the most stable form. Violet phosphorene was easily obtained by both mechanical and solution exfoliation under ambient conditions.

Abstract Stimuli‐responsive photoluminescent materials have attracted considerable attention owing to their potential applications in security protection because the information recorded directly in materials with static luminescent outputs are usually visible under either ambient or UV light. Herein, we realize reversible information anticounterfeiting by loading a photoswitchable diarylethene derivative into a lanthanide metal–organic framework (MOF). Light triggers the open‐ and closed‐form isomerization of the diarylethene unit, which respectively regulates the inactivation and activation of the photochromic FRET process between the diarylethene acceptor and lanthanide donor, resulting in reversible luminescence on–off switching of the lanthanide emitting center in the MOF host. This photoresponsive host–guest system allows for reversible multiple information pattern visible/invisible transformation by simply alternating the exposure to UV and visible light.

Abstract We report a series of highly emissive azatriangulenetrione (TANGO) solids in which the luminescent properties are controlled by engineering the molecular packing by adjusting the steric size of substituents. The co‐alignment of “phosphorogenic” carbonyl groups within the π‐stacks results in an almost pure triplet emission in HTANGO, TCTANGO, TBTANGO and TITANGO, while their rotation by ≈60° in the sterically hindered t BuTANGO leads to an almost pure singlet emission. Despite strong π‐interactions, aggregation‐induced quenching and triplet–triplet annihilation are avoided in HTANGO and TCTANGO which display efficient phosphorescence in the solid state. To our knowledge, HTANGO with the solid‐state phosphorescence quantum yield of 42 % at room temperature is the most efficient phosphor composed of the 1 st /2 nd raw elements only.

Abstract Supramolecular assemblies have been very successful in regulating the photothermal conversion efficiency of organic photothermal materials in a simple and flexible way, compared with conventional molecular synthesis. In these assemblies, it is the inherent physiochemical mechanism that determines the photothermal conversion, rather than the assembly strategy. This Minireview summarizes supramolecular photothermal effects, which refer to the unique features of supramolecular chemistry for regulating the photothermal conversion efficiency. Emphasis is placed on the mechanisms of how self‐assembly affects the photothermal performance. The supramolecular photothermal effects on various types of light‐harvesting species are discussed in detail. The timely interpretation of supramolecular photothermal effects is promising for the future design of the photothermal materials with high efficiency, precision, and multiple functionalities for a wide array of applications.

Abstract The charge transfer between hydrogen evolution photocatalysts (HEPs) and oxygen evolution photocatalysts (OEPs) is the rate‐determining step that controls the overall performance of a Z‐scheme water‐splitting system. Here, we carefully design reduced graphene oxide (RGO) nanosheets for use as solid‐state mediators to accelerate the charge carrier transfer between HEPs (e.g., polymeric carbon nitride (PCN)) and OEPs (e.g., Fe 2 O 3 ), thus achieving efficient overall water splitting. The important role of RGO could also be further proven in other PCN‐based Z‐systems (BiVO 4 /RGO/PCN and WO 3 /RGO/PCN), illustrating the universality of this strategy.

Abstract Developing pure organic materials with ultralong lifetimes is attractive but challenging. Here we report a concise chemical approach to regulate the electronic configuration for phosphorescence enhancement. After the introduction of d–pπ bonds into a phenothiazine model system, a phosphorescence lifetime enhancement of up to 19 times was observed for DOPPMO, compared to the reference PPMO. A record phosphorescence lifetime of up to 876 ms was obtained in phosphorescent phenothiazine. Theoretical calculations and single‐crystal analysis reveal that the d–pπ bond not only reduces the (n, π*) proportion of the T1 state, but also endows the rigid molecular environment with multiple intermolecular interactions, thus enabling long‐lived phosphorescence. This finding makes a valuable contribution to the prolongation of phosphorescence lifetimes and the extension of the scope of phosphorescent materials.

Abstract The integration of molecular catalysts with low‐cost, solid light absorbers presents a promising strategy to construct catalysts for the generation of solar fuels. Here, we report a photocatalyst for CO2 reduction that consists of a polymeric cobalt phthalocyanine catalyst (CoPPc) coupled with mesoporous carbon nitride (mpg‐CNx) as the photosensitizer. This precious‐metal‐free hybrid catalyst selectively converts CO2 to CO in organic solvents under UV/Vis light (AM 1.5G, 100 mW cm−2, λ>300 nm) with a cobalt‐based turnover number of 90 for CO after 60 h. Notably, the photocatalyst retains 60 % CO evolution activity under visible light irradiation (λ>400 nm) and displays moderate water tolerance. The in situ polymerization of the phthalocyanine allows control of catalyst loading and is key for achieving photocatalytic CO2 conversion.

Abstract Imine condensation has been known to chemists for more than a century and is used extensively to synthesize large organic cages of defined shapes and sizes. Surprisingly, in the context of the synthetic methods for organic imine cages (OICs), a self‐sorting/self‐selection (molecular marriage) process has been overlooked over the years. Such processes are omnipresent in nature, from the creation of galaxies to the formation of the smallest building blocks of life (the cell). Such processes have the incredible ability to guide a system toward the formation of a specific product or products out of a collection of equally probable multiple possibilities. This Minireview sheds light on new opportunities in cage design offered by the self‐sorting/self‐selection protocol in OICs. Recent efforts to explore organic cages for various exciting new applications are discussed; for example, for detection of harmful small organic molecules, as templates for nucleation of metal nanoparticles (MNPs), and as proton‐conducting materials.

Abstract A surfactant‐stabilized coordination strategy is used to make two‐dimensional (2D) single‐atom catalysts (SACs) with an ultrahigh Pt loading of 12.0 wt %, by assembly of pre‐formed single Pt atom coordinated porphyrin precursors into free‐standing metal–organic framework (MOF) nanosheets with an ultrathin thickness of 2.4±0.9 nm. This is the first example of 2D MOF‐based SACs. Remarkably, the 2D SACs exhibit a record‐high photocatalytic H2 evolution rate of 11 320 μmol g−1 h−1 via water splitting under visible light irradiation (λ>420 nm) compared with those of reported MOF‐based photocatalysts. Moreover, the MOF nanosheets can be readily drop‐casted onto solid substrates, forming thin films while still retaining their photocatalytic activity, which is highly desirable for practical solar H2 production.

Abstract For electrocatalysts for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), encapsulating transition metal phosphides (TMPs) into nitrogen‐doped carbon materials has been known as an effective strategy to elevate the activity and stability. Yet still, it remains unclear how the TMPs work synergistically with the N‐doped support, and which N configuration (pyridinic N, pyrrolic N, or graphitic N) contributes predominantly to the synergy. Here we present a HER electrocatalyst (denoted as MoP@NCHSs) comprising MoP nanoparticles encapsulated in N‐doped carbon hollow spheres, which displays excellent activity and stability for HER in alkaline media. Results of experimental investigations and theoretical calculations indicate that the synergy between MoP and the pyridinic N can most effectively promote the HER in alkaline media.

Abstract Efficient, earth‐abundant, and acid‐stable catalysts for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) are missing pieces for the production of hydrogen via water electrolysis. Here, we report how the limitations on the stability of 3d‐metal materials can be overcome by the spectroscopic identification of stable potential windows in which the OER can be catalyzed efficiently while simultaneously suppressing deactivation pathways. We demonstrate the benefits of this approach using gamma manganese oxide (γ‐MnO 2 ), which shows no signs of deactivation even after 8000 h of electrolysis at a pH of 2. This stability is vastly superior to existing acid‐stable 3d‐metal OER catalysts, but cannot be realized if there is a deviation as small as 50‐mV from the stable potential window. A stable voltage efficiency of over 70 % in a polymer–electrolyte membrane (PEM) electrolyzer further verifies the availability of this approach and showcases how materials previously perceived to be unstable may have potential application for water electrolysis in an acidic environment.
