Increasing the stream of recycled plastic necessitates an approach beyond the traditional recycling via melting and re-extrusion. Various chemical recycling processes have great potential to enhance recycling rates. In this Review, a summary of the various chemical recycling routes and assessment via life-cycle analysis is complemented by an extensive list of processes developed by companies active in chemical recycling. We show that each of the currently available processes is applicable for specific plastic waste streams. Thus, only a combination of different technologies can address the plastic waste problem. Research should focus on more realistic, more contaminated and mixed waste streams, while collection and sorting infrastructure will need to be improved, that is, by stricter regulation. This Review aims to inspire both science and innovation for the production of higher value and quality products from plastic recycling suitable for reuse or valorization to create the necessary economic and environmental push for a circular economy.

Abstract Unveiling the active phase of catalytic materials under reaction conditions is important for the construction of efficient electrocatalysts for selective nitrate reduction to ammonia. The origin of the prominent activity enhancement for CuO (Faradaic efficiency: 95.8 %, Selectivity: 81.2 %) toward selective nitrate electroreduction to ammonia was probed. 15 N isotope labeling experiments showed that ammonia originated from nitrate reduction. 1 H NMR spectroscopy and colorimetric methods were performed to quantify ammonia. In situ Raman and ex situ experiments revealed that CuO was electrochemically converted into Cu/Cu 2 O, which serves as an active phase. The combined results of online differential electrochemical mass spectrometry (DEMS) and DFT calculations demonstrated that the electron transfer from Cu 2 O to Cu at the interface could facilitate the formation of *NOH intermediate and suppress the hydrogen evolution reaction, leading to high selectivity and Faradaic efficiency.

Aggregation-induced emission (AIE) describes a photophysical phenomenon in which molecular aggregates exhibit stronger emission than the single molecules. Over the course of the last 20 years, AIE research has made great strides in material development, mechanistic study and high-tech applications. The achievements of AIE research demonstrate that molecular aggregates show many properties and functions that are absent in molecular species. In this review, we summarize the advances in the field of AIE and its related areas. We specifically focus on the new properties of materials attained by molecular aggregates beyond the microscopic molecular level. We hope this review will inspire more research into molecular ensembles at and beyond the meso level and lead to the significant progress in material and biological science.

Aqueous zinc-ion batteries have rapidly developed recently as promising energy storage devices in large-scale energy storage systems owing to their low cost and high safety. Research on suppressing zinc dendrite growth has meanwhile attracted widespread attention to improve the lifespan and reversibility of batteries. Herein, design methods for dendrite-free zinc anodes and their internal mechanisms are reviewed from the perspective of optimizing the host-zinc interface and the zinc-electrolyte interface. Furthermore, a design strategy is proposed to homogenize zinc deposition by regulating the interfacial electric field and ion distribution during zinc nucleation and growth. This Minireview can offer potential directions for the rational design of dendrite-free zinc anodes employed in aqueous zinc-ion batteries.

Abstract Constructing heterojunctions between two semiconductors with matched band structure is an effective strategy to acquire high‐efficiency photocatalysts. The S‐scheme heterojunction system has shown great potential in facilitating separation and transfer of photogenerated carriers, as well as acquiring strong photoredox ability. Herein, a 0D/2D S‐Scheme heterojunction material involving CeO 2 quantum dots and polymeric carbon nitride (CeO 2 /PCN) is designed and constructed by in situ wet chemistry with subsequent heat treatment. This S‐scheme heterojunction material shows high‐efficiency photocatalytic sterilization rate (88.1 %) towards Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) under visible‐light irradiation ( λ ≥420 nm), which is 2.7 and 8.2 times that of pure CeO 2 (32.2 %) and PCN (10.7 %), respectively. Strong evidence of S‐scheme charge transfer path is verified by theoretical calculations, in situ irradiated X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and electron paramagnetic resonance.

Regulating Interfacial Chemistry in Lithium‐Ion Batteries by a Weakly Solvating Electrolyte**

The performance of Li-ion batteries (LIBs) is highly dependent on their interfacial chemistry, which is regulated by electrolytes. Conventional electrolyte typically contains polar solvents to dissociate Li salts. Herein we report a weakly solvating electrolyte (WSE) that consists of a pure non-polar solvent, which leads to a peculiar solvation structure where ion pairs and aggregates prevail under a low salt concentration of 1.0 M. Importantly, WSE forms unique anion-derived interphases on graphite electrodes that exhibit fast-charging and long-term cycling characteristics. First-principles calculations unravel a general principle that the competitive coordination between anions and solvents to Li ions is the origin of different interfacial chemistries. By bridging the gap between solution thermodynamics and interfacial chemistry in batteries, this work opens a brand-new way towards precise electrolyte engineering for energy storage devices with desired properties.

Nonetheless, the limited lifespan arising from dendritic electrodeposition of metallic Zn hinders their further development. Herein, a metal–organic framework (MOF) was constructed as front surface layer to maintain a super‐saturated electrolyte layer on the Zn anode. Raman spectroscopy indicated that the highly coordinated ion complexes migrating through the MOF channels were different from the solvation structure in bulk electrolyte. Benefiting from the unique super‐saturated front surface, symmetric Zn cells survived up to 3000 hours at 0.5 mA cm −2 , near 55‐times that of bare Zn anodes. Moreover, aqueous MnO 2 –Zn batteries delivered a reversible capacity of 180.3 mAh g −1 and maintained a high capacity retention of 88.9 % after 600 cycles with MnO 2 mass loading up to 4.2 mg cm −2 .

Metallic zinc is a promising anode candidate of aqueous zinc-ion batteries owing to its high theoretical capacity and low redox potential. However, Zn anodes usually suffer from dendrite and side reactions, which will degrade their cycle stability and reversibility. Herein, we developed an in situ spontaneously reducing/assembling strategy to assemble a ultrathin and uniform MXene layer on the surface of Zn anodes. The MXene layer endows the Zn anode with a lower Zn nucleation energy barrier and a more uniformly distributed electric field through the favorable charge redistribution effect in comparison with pure Zn. Therefore, MXene-integrated Zn anode exhibits obviously low voltage hysteresis and excellent cycling stability with dendrite-free behaviors, ensuring the high capacity retention and low polarization potential in zinc-ion batteries.

Aggregation-induced emission (AIE) has attracted considerable interest over the last twenty years. In contrast to the large number of available reviews focusing specifically on AIE, this Essay discusses the AIE phenomenon from a broader perspective, with an emphasis on early observations related to AIE made long before the term was coined. Illustrative examples are highlighted from the 20th century where fluorescence enhancement upon rigidification of dyes in viscous or solid environments or J-aggregate formation was studied. It is shown that these examples already include typical AIE luminogens such as tetraphenylethylene (TPE) as well as stilbenes and oligo- or polyphenylenevinylenes and -ethynylenes, which became important fluorescent solid-state materials in OLED research in the 1990s. Further examples include cyanine dyes such as thiazole orange (TO) or its dimers (TOTOs), which have been widely applied as molecular probes in nucleic acid research. The up to 10 000-fold fluorescence enhancement of such dyes upon intercalation into double-stranded DNA, attributable to the…

Abstract Single‐atom CoN 4 active sites have demonstrated excellent efficiency in peroxymonosulfate activation. However, the identification of CoN 4 active sites and the detailed singlet oxygen generation mechanism in peroxymonosulfate activation remains ambiguous. We demonstrate a strategy to regulate the generation of reactive oxygen species by atomically dispersed cobalt anchored on nitrogen‐doped carbon. As indicated by experiment and DFT calculations, CoN 2+2 was the active site and singlet oxygen was the predominant reactive oxygen species with a proportion of 98.89 %. Spontaneous dissociation of adsorbed peroxymonosulfate on the CoN 2+2 active sites was energetically unfavorable because of the weakly positive Co atoms and CoN 2+2 coordination, which directed PMS oxidation by a non‐radical pathway and with simultaneous singlet oxygen generation. The generated singlet oxygen degraded several organic pollutants with high efficiency across a broad pH range.

Abstract In carbonate electrolytes, the organic–inorganic solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) formed on the Li‐metal anode surface is strongly bonded to Li and experiences the same volume change as Li, thus it undergoes continuous cracking/reformation during plating/stripping cycles. Here, an inorganic‐rich SEI is designed on a Li‐metal surface to reduce its bonding energy with Li metal by dissolving 4 m concentrated LiNO 3 in dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) as an additive for a fluoroethylene‐carbonate (FEC)‐based electrolyte. Due to the aggregate structure of NO 3 − ions and their participation in the primary Li + solvation sheath, abundant Li 2 O, Li 3 N, and LiN x O y grains are formed in the resulting SEI, in addition to the uniform LiF distribution from the reduction of PF 6 − ions. The weak bonding of the SEI (high interface energy) to Li can effectively promote Li diffusion along the SEI/Li interface and prevent Li dendrite penetration into the SEI. As a result, our designed carbonate electrolyte enables a Li anode to achieve a high Li plating/stripping Coulombic efficiency of…

Abstract NO removal from exhausted gas is necessary owing to its damage to environment. Meanwhile, the electrochemical ammonia synthesis (EAS) from N2 suffers from low reaction rate and Faradaic efficiency (FE). Now, an alternative route for ammonia synthesis is proposed from exhaust NO via electrocatalysis. DFT calculations indicate electrochemical NO reduction (NORR) is more active than N2 reduction (NRR). Via a descriptor‐based approach, Cu was screened out to be the most active transition metal catalyst for NORR to NH3 owing to its moderate reactivity. Kinetic barrier calculations reveal NH3 is the most preferred product relative to H2, N2O, and N2 on Cu. Experimentally, a record‐high EAS rate of 517.1 μmol cm−2 h−1 and FE of 93.5 % were achieved at −0.9 V vs. RHE using a Cu foam electrode, exhibiting stable electrocatalytic performances with a 100 h run. Abstract Strong metal–support interaction (SMSI) has gained great attention in the field of heterogeneous catalysis. However, whether single‐atom catalysts can exhibit SMSI remains unknown. Here, we demonstrate that SMSI can occur on TiO 2 ‐supported Pt single atoms but at a much higher reduction temperature than that for Pt nanoparticles (NPs). Pt single atoms involved in SMSI are not covered by the TiO 2 support nor do they sink into its subsurface. The suppression of CO adsorption on Pt single atoms stems from coordination saturation (18‐electron rule) rather than the physical coverage of Pt atoms by the support. Based on the new finding it is revealed that single atoms are the true active sites in the hydrogenation of 3‐nitrostyrene, while Pt NPs barely contribute to the activity since the NP sites are selectively encapsulated. The findings in this work provide a new approach to study the active sites by tuning SMSI.

Abstract Single‐atom catalysts (SACs) have great potential in electrocatalysis. Their performance can be rationally optimized by tailoring the metal atoms, adjacent coordinative dopants, and metal loading. However, doing so is still a great challenge because of the limited synthesis approach and insufficient understanding of the structure–property relationships. Herein, we report a new kind of Mo SAC with a unique O,S coordination and a high metal loading over 10 wt %. The isolation and local environment was identified by high‐angle annular dark‐field scanning transmission electron microscopy and extended X‐ray absorption fine structure. The SACs catalyze the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) via a 2 e− pathway with a high H2O2 selectivity of over 95 % in 0.10 m KOH. The critical role of the Mo single atoms and the coordination structure was revealed by both electrochemical tests and theoretical calculations.

Abstract Transition metal (TM)‐based bimetallic spinel oxides can efficiently activate peroxymonosulfate (PMS) presumably attributed to enhanced electron transfer between TMs, but the existing model cannot fully explain the efficient TM redox cycling. Here, we discover a critical role of TM−O covalency in governing the intrinsic catalytic activity of Co 3− x Mn x O 4 spinel oxides. Experimental and theoretical analysis reveals that the Co sites significantly raises the Mn valence and enlarges Mn−O covalency in octahedral configuration, thereby lowering the charge transfer energy to favor Mn Oh –PMS interaction. With appropriate Mn IV /Mn III ratio to balance PMS adsorption and Mn IV reduction, the Co 1.1 Mn 1.9 O 4 exhibits remarkable catalytic activities for PMS activation and pollutant degradation, outperforming all the reported TM spinel oxides. The improved understandings on the origins of spinel oxides activity for PMS activation may inspire the development of more active and robust metal oxide catalysts.

Abstract It is still a great challenge to achieve high selectivity of CH4 in CO2 electroreduction reactions (CO2RR) because of the similar reduction potentials of possible products and the sluggish kinetics for CO2 activation. Stabilizing key reaction intermediates by single type of active sites supported on porous conductive material is crucial to achieve high selectivity for single product such as CH4. Here, Cu2O(111) quantum dots with an average size of 3.5 nm are in situ synthesized on a porous conductive copper‐based metal–organic framework (CuHHTP), exhibiting high selectivity of 73 % towards CH4 with partial current density of 10.8 mA cm−2 at −1.4 V vs. RHE (reversible hydrogen electrode) in CO2RR. Operando infrared spectroscopy and DFT calculations reveal that the key intermediates (such as *CH2O and *OCH3) involved in the pathway of CH4 formation are stabilized by the single active Cu2O(111) and hydrogen bonding, thus generating CH4 instead of CO.

Herein, we developed a ZIF‐62 MOF glass membrane and exploited its intrinsic gas‐separation properties. The MOF glass membrane was fabricated by melt‐quenching treatment of an in situ solvothermally synthesized polycrystalline ZIF‐62 MOF membrane on a porous ceramic alumina support. Optical imaging plays a crucial role in biomedicine. However, due to strong light scattering and autofluorescence in biological tissue between 650-900 nm, conventional optical imaging often has a poor signal-to-background ratio and shallow penetration depth, which limits its ability in deep-tissue in vivo imaging. Second near-infrared fluorescence, chemiluminescence, and photoacoustic imaging modalities mitigate these issues by their respective advantages of minimized light scattering, eliminated external excitation, and ultrasound detection. To enable disease detection, activatable molecular probes (AMPs) with the ability to change their second near-infrared fluorescence, chemiluminescence, or photoacoustic signals in response to a biomarker have been developed. This Minireview summarizes the molecular design strategies, sensing mechanisms, and imaging applications of AMPs. Metal-organic frameworks or biological macromolecules involve complex architectures and a large variety of elements. Yet, a general and broadly applicable theoretical method to describe the structures and interactions of molecules beyond the 1000-atom size regime semi-quantitatively is not self-evident. For this purpose, a generic force field named GFN-FF is presented, which is completely newly developed to enable fast structure optimizations and molecular-dynamics simulations for basically any chemical structure consisting of elements up to radon. The freely available computer program requires only starting coordinates and elemental composition as input from which, fully automatically, all potential-energy terms are constructed. GFN-FF outperforms other force fields in terms of generality and accuracy, approaching the performance of much more elaborate quantum-mechanical methods in many cases.

Focusing on the NOR mediated by the β‐Ni(OH)2 electrode, we decipher the transformation mechanism of the nitrogenous nucleophile. For the two‐step NOR, proton‐coupled electron transfer (PCET) is the bridge between electrocatalytic dehydrogenation from β‐Ni(OH)2 to β‐Ni(OH)O, and the spontaneous nucleophile dehydrogenative oxidation reaction. This theory can give a good explanation for hydrazine and primary amine oxidation reactions, but is insufficient for the urea oxidation reaction (UOR). Through operando tracing of bond rupture and formation processes during the UOR, as well as theoretical calculations, we propose a possible UOR mechanism whereby intramolecular coupling of the N−N bond, accompanied by PCET, hydration and rearrangement processes, results in high performance and ca. 100 % N2 selectivity. A series of COF–semiconductor Z‐scheme photocatalysts combining water‐oxidation semiconductors (TiO 2 , Bi 2 WO 6 , and α‐Fe 2 O 3 ) with CO 2 reduction COFs (COF‐316/318) was synthesized and exhibited high photocatalytic CO 2 ‐to‐CO conversion efficiencies (up to 69.67 μmol g −1 h −1 ), with H 2 O as the electron donor in the gas–solid CO 2 reduction, without additional photosensitizers and sacrificial agents. This is the first report of covalently bonded COF/inorganic‐semiconductor systems utilizing the Z‐scheme applied for artificial photosynthesis. Experiments and calculations confirmed efficient semiconductor‐to‐COF electron transfer by covalent coupling, resulting in electron accumulation in the cyano/pyridine moieties of the COF for CO 2 reduction and holes in the semiconductor for H 2 O oxidation, thus mimicking natural photosynthesis.

Metals are usually considered to be stable during the cathodic process. However, the actual behaviors of Mo in the NiMo alloys are unexplored. Here, we present the instability of Mo in the Ni 4 Mo alloy as a highly efficient HER electrocatalyst in an alkaline medium. Mo in Ni 4 Mo is oxidized and dissolved in the form of MoO 4 2− first. The dissolved MoO 4 2− will re‐adsorb on the electrode surface and polymerize. Theoretical calculations indicate that the adsorption of the dimer Mo 2 O 7 2− can promote the HER activity of metal Ni. The addition of MoO 4 2− to the electrolyte can not only repair the durability of Ni 4 Mo alloy, but also facilitate the HER activity of pure metal of Ni, Fe, and Co. Our findings provide insight into the structural transformation mechanism and performance‐enhanced origin of cathodic materials under the reaction conditions.

Abstract Transition metal chalcogenides (TMCs) are efficient oxygen evolution reaction (OER) pre‐electrocatalysts, and will in situ transform into metal (oxy)hydroxides under OER condition. However, the role of chalcogen is not fully elucidated after oxidation and severe leaching. Here we present the vital promotion of surface‐adsorbed chalcogenates on the OER activity. Taking NiSe 2 as an example, in situ Raman spectroscopy revealed the oxidation of Se‐Se to selenites (SeO 3 2− ) then to selenates (SeO 4 2− ). Combining the severe Se leaching and the strong signal of selenates, it is assumed that the selenates are rich on the surface and play significant roles. As expected, adding selenites to the electrolyte of Ni(OH) 2 dramatically enhance its OER activity. And sulfates also exhibit the similar effect, suggesting the promotion of surface‐adsorbed chalcogenates on OER is universal. Our findings offer unique insight into the transformation mechanism of materials during electrolysis.

Herein, using Pt and Pt-Ni nanoparticles we first demonstrate a strong dependence of the proton donor structure on the HER activity and pH. The structure of the first layer changes from the proton acceptors to the donors with increasing pH. In the base, the reactivity of the interfacial water varied its structure, and the activation energies of water dissociation increased in the sequence: the dangling O-H bonds < the trihedrally coordinated water < the tetrahedrally coordinated water. Moreover, optimizing the adsorption of H and OH intermediates can re-orientate the interfacial water molecules with their H atoms pointing towards the electrode surface, thereby enhancing the kinetics of HER. All-polymer solar cells (all-PSCs) have drawn tremendous research interest in recent years, due to their inherent advantages of good film formation, stable morphology, and mechanical flexibility. The most representative and most widely used n-CP acceptor was the naphthalene diimide based D-A copolymer N2200 before 2017, and the power conversion efficiency (PCE) of the all-PSCs based on N2200 reached over 8% in 2016. However, the low absorption coefficient of N2200 in the near-infrared (NIR) region limits the further increase of its PCE. In 2017, we proposed a strategy of polymerizing small-molecule acceptors (SMAs) to construct new-generation polymer acceptors. The polymerized SMAs (PSMAs) possess low band gap and strong absorption in the NIR region, which attracted great attention and drove the PCE of the all-PSCs to over 15% recently. In this Minireview we explain the design strategies of the molecular structure of PSMAs and describe recent research progress. Finally, current challenges and future prospects of the PSMAs are analyzed and discussed.

Abstract The efficient conversion of solar energy by means of photocatalysis shows huge potential to relieve the ongoing energy crisis and increasing environmental pollution. However, unsatisfactory conversion efficiency still hinders its practical application. The introduction of external fields can remarkably enhance the photocatalytic performance of semiconductors from the inside out. This review focuses on recent advances in the application of diverse external fields, including microwaves, mechanical stress, temperature gradient, electric field, magnetic field, and coupled fields, to boost photocatalytic reactions, for applications in, for example, contaminant degradation, water splitting, CO 2 reduction, and bacterial inactivation. The relevant reinforcement mechanisms of photoabsorption, the transport and separation of photoinduced charges, and adsorption of reagents by the external fields are highlighted. Finally, the challenges and outlook for the development of external‐field‐enhanced photocatalysis are presented.

Abstract Propane dehydrogenation (PDH) has great potential to meet the increasing global demand for propylene, but the widely used Pt‐based catalysts usually suffer from short‐term stability and unsatisfactory propylene selectivity. Herein, we develop a ligand‐protected direct hydrogen reduction method for encapsulating subnanometer bimetallic Pt–Zn clusters inside silicalite‐1 (S‐1) zeolite. The introduction of Zn species significantly improved the stability of the Pt clusters and gave a superhigh propylene selectivity of 99.3 % with a weight hourly space velocity (WHSV) of 3.6–54 h −1 and specific activity of propylene formation of 65.5 mol g Pt −1 h −1 (WHSV=108 h −1 ) at 550 °C. Moreover, no obvious deactivation was observed over PtZn4@S‐1‐H catalyst even after 13000 min on stream (WHSV=3.6 h −1 ), affording an extremely low deactivation constant of 0.001 h −1 , which is 200 times lower than that of the PtZn4/Al 2 O 3 counterpart under the same conditions. We also show that the introduction of Cs + ions into the zeolite can improve the regeneration stability of catalysts, and…

Abstract H2 production via water electrolysis is of great significance in clean energy production, which, however, suffers from the sluggish kinetics of the anodic oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Moreover, the anode product, O2, which is of rather low value, may lead to dangerous explosions and the generation of membrane‐degrading reactive oxygen species. Herein, to address these issues of electrocatalytic H2 production, we summarize the most recent advances in three stages based on the benefit increments and various electron donation routes, which are: 1) electron donation by traditional OER: developing efficient catalysts for water oxidation to promote H2 production; 2) electron donation by the oxidation of sacrificial agents: using sacrificial agents to assist H2 production; 3) electron donation by electrosynthesis reaction: achieving electrosynthesis in parallel with cathodic H2 production. Present challenges and related prospects will also be discussed, hopefully to benefit the further progress of electrocatalytic H2 generation.

Abstract Lithium‐ion batteries with routine carbonate electrolytes cannot exhibit satisfactory fast‐charging performance and lithium plating is widely observed at low temperatures. Herein we demonstrate that a localized high‐concentration electrolyte consisting of 1.5 M lithium bis(fluorosulfonyl)imide in dimethoxyethane with bis(2,2,2‐trifluoroethyl) ether as the diluent, enables fast‐charging of working batteries. A uniform and robust solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) can be achieved on graphite surface through the preferential decomposition of anions. The established SEI can significantly inhibit ether solvent co‐intercalation into graphite and achieve highly reversible Li + intercalation/de‐intercalation. The graphite | Li cells exhibit fast‐charging potential (340 mAh g −1 at 0.2 C and 220 mAh g −1 at 4 C), excellent cycling stability (ca. 85.5 % initial capacity retention for 200 cycles at 4 C), and impressive low‐temperature performance.

Nickel iron oxyhydroxide is the benchmark catalyst for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) in alkaline medium. Whereas the presence of Fe ions is essential to the high activity, the functions of Fe are currently under debate. Using oxygen isotope labeling and operando Raman spectroscopic experiments, we obtain turnover frequencies (TOFs) of both Ni and Fe sites for a series of Ni and NiFe layered double hydroxides (LDHs), which are structurally defined samples of the corresponding oxyhydroxides. The Fe sites have TOFs 20-200 times higher than the Ni sites such that at an Fe content of 4.7 % and above the Fe sites dominate the catalysis. Higher Fe contents lead to larger structural disorder of the NiOOH host. A volcano-type correlation was found between the TOFs of Fe sites and the structural disorder of NiOOH. Our work elucidates the origin of the Fe-dependent activity of NiFe LDH, and suggests structural ordering as a strategy to improve OER catalysts.

However, the application of a Zn anode is hindered by severe dendrite formation and side reactions. Herein, an interfacial bridged organic–inorganic hybrid protection layer (Nafion‐Zn‐X) is developed by complexing inorganic Zn‐X zeolite nanoparticles with Nafion, which shifts ion transport from channel transport in Nafion to a hopping mechanism in the organic–inorganic interface. This unique organic–inorganic structure is found to effectively suppress dendrite growth and side reactions of the Zn anode. Consequently, the Zn@Nafion‐Zn‐X composite anode delivers high coulombic efficiency (ca. 97 %), deep Zn plating/stripping (10 mAh cm −2 ), and long cycle life (over 10 000 cycles). By tackling the intrinsic chemical/electrochemical issues, the proposed strategy provides a versatile remedy for the limited cycle life of the Zn anode.

The energy of visible photons and the accessible redox potentials of common photocatalysts set thermodynamic limits to photochemical reactions that can be driven by traditional visible-light irradiation. UV excitation can be damaging and induce side reactions, hence visible or even near-IR light is usually preferable. Thus, photochemistry currently faces two divergent challenges, namely the desire to perform ever more thermodynamically demanding reactions with increasingly lower photon energies. The pooling of two low-energy photons can address both challenges simultaneously, and whilst multi-photon spectroscopy is well established, synthetic photoredox chemistry has only recently started to exploit multi-photon processes on the preparative scale. Herein, we have a critical look at currently developed reactions and mechanistic concepts, discuss pertinent experimental methods, and provide an outlook into possible future developments of this rapidly emerging area.

Abstract Aqueous Zn batteries are promising energy‐storage devices. However, their lifespan is limited by irreversible Zn anodes owing to water decomposition and Zn dendrite growth. Here, we separate aqueous electrolyte from Zn anode by coating a thin MOF layer on anode and filling the pores of MOF with hydrophobic Zn(TFSI)2‐tris(2,2,2‐trifluoroethyl)phosphate (TFEP) organic electrolyte that is immiscible with aqueous Zn(TFSI)2–H2O bulk electrolyte. The MOF encapsulated Zn(TFSI)2‐TFEP forms a ZnF2‐Zn3(PO4)2 solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) preventing Zn dendrite and water decomposition. The Zn(TFSI)2‐TFEP@MOF electrolyte protected Zn anode enables a Zn||Ti cell to achieve a high average Coulombic efficiency of 99.1 % for 350 cycles. The highly reversible Zn anode brings a high energy density of 210 Wh kg−1 (of cathode and anode mass) and a low capacity decay rate of 0.0047 % per cycle over 600 cycles in a Zn||MnO2 full cell with a low capacity ratio of Zn:MnO2 at 2:1.

Abstract The upgrading of plastic waste is one of the grand challenges for the 21st century owing to its disruptive impact on the environment. Here, we show the first example of the upgrading of various aromatic plastic wastes with C−O and/or C−C linkages to arenes (75–85 % yield) via catalytic hydrogenolysis over a Ru/Nb2O5 catalyst. This catalyst not only allows the selective conversion of single‐component aromatic plastic, and more importantly, enables the simultaneous conversion of a mixture of aromatic plastic to arenes. The excellent performance is attributed to unique features including: (1) the small sized Ru clusters on Nb2O5, which prevent the adsorption of aromatic ring and its hydrogenation; (2) the strong oxygen affinity of NbOx species for C−O bond activation and Brønsted acid sites for C−C bond activation. This study offers a catalytic path to integrate aromatic plastic waste back into the supply chain of plastic production under the context of circular economy.

Lithium metal is recognized as one of the most promising anode materials owing to its ultrahigh theoretical specific capacity and low electrochemical potential. Nonetheless, dendritic Li growth has dramatically hindered the practical applications of Li metal anodes. Realizing spherical Li deposition is an effective approach to avoid Li dendrite growth, but the mechanism of spherical deposition is unknown. Herein, a diffusion-reaction competition mechanism is proposed to reveal the rationale of different Li deposition morphologies. By controlling the rate-determining step (diffusion or reaction) of Li deposition, various Li deposition scenarios are realized, in which the diffusion-controlled process tends to lead to dendritic Li deposition while the reaction-controlled process leads to spherical Li deposition. This study sheds fresh light on the dendrite-free Li metal anode and guides to achieve safe batteries to benefit future wireless and fossil-fuel-free world.

Ultralong organic phosphorescence (UOP) has attracted increasing attention due to its potential applications in optoelectronics, bioelectronics, and security protection. However, achieving UOP with high quantum efficiency (QE) over 20 % is still full of challenges due to intersystem crossing (ISC) and fast non-radiative transitions in organic molecules. Here, we present a novel strategy to enhance the QE of UOP materials by modulating intramolecular halogen bonding via structural isomerism. The QE of CzS2Br reaches up to 52.10 %, which is the highest afterglow efficiency reported so far. The crucial reason for the extraordinary QE is intramolecular halogen bonding, which can not only effectively enhance ISC by promoting spin-orbit coupling, but also greatly confine motions of excited molecules to restrict non-radiative pathways. This work provides a reasonable strategy to develop highly efficient UOP materials for practical applications.

Ambient afterglow luminescence from metal-free organic chromophores would provide a promising alternative to the well-explored inorganic phosphors. However, the realization of air-stable and solution-processable organic afterglow systems with long-lived triplet or singlet states remains a formidable challenge. In the present study, a delayed sensitization of the singlet state of organic dyes via phosphorescence energy transfer from organic phosphors is proposed as an alternative strategy to realize "afterglow fluorescence". This concept is demonstrated with a long-lived phosphor as the energy donor and commercially available fluorescent dyes as the energy acceptor. Triplet-to-singlet Förster-resonance energy-transfer (TS-FRET) between donor and acceptor chromophores, which are co-organized in an amorphous polymer matrix, results in tuneable yellow and red afterglow from the fluorescent acceptors. Moreover, these afterglow fluorescent hybrids are highly solution-processable and show excellent air-stability with good quantum yields.

Abstract The electrochemical CO 2 reduction reaction (CO 2 RR) to give C 1 (formate and CO) products is one of the most techno‐economically achievable strategies for alleviating CO 2 emissions. Now, it is demonstrated that the SnO x shell in Sn 2.7 Cu catalyst with a hierarchical Sn‐Cu core can be reconstructed in situ under cathodic potentials of CO 2 RR. The resulting Sn 2.7 Cu catalyst achieves a high current density of 406.7±14.4 mA cm −2 with C 1 Faradaic efficiency of 98.0±0.9 % at −0.70 V vs. RHE, and remains stable at 243.1±19.2 mA cm −2 with a C 1 Faradaic efficiency of 99.0±0.5 % for 40 h at −0.55 V vs. RHE. DFT calculations indicate that the reconstructed Sn/SnO x interface facilitates formic acid production by optimizing binding of the reaction intermediate HCOO* while promotes Faradaic efficiency of C 1 products by suppressing the competitive hydrogen evolution reaction, resulting in high Faradaic efficiency, current density, and stability of CO 2 RR at low overpotentials.

Abstract A bifunctional oxygen evolution reaction (OER) mechanism, in which the energetically demanding step of the attack of hydroxide on a metal oxo unit is facilitated by a hydrogen atom transfer to a second site, has the potential to circumvent the scaling relationship. However, the bifunctional mechanism has hitherto only been supported by theoretical computations. Here we describe an operando Raman spectroscopic and electrokinetic study of two highly active OER catalysts, FeOOH‐NiOOH and NiFe layered double hydroxide (LDH). The data support two distinct mechanisms for the two catalysts: FeOOH‐NiOOH operates by a bifunctional mechanism where the rate‐determining O−O bond forming step is the OH − attack on a Fe=O coupled with a hydrogen atom transfer to a Ni III ‐O site, whereas NiFe LDH operates by a conventional mechanism of four consecutive proton‐coupled electron transfer steps. The experimental validation of the bifunctional mechanism enhances the understanding of OER catalysts.

However, their stability under highly oxidizing environment is questionable but was rarely studied. Herein, NiFe‐metal–organic framework (NiFe‐MOFs) was conformally coated on oxygen‐vacancy‐rich BiVO4 (Ov‐BiVO4) as the protective layer and cocatalyst, forming a core–shell structure with caffeic acid as bridging agent. The as‐synthesized Ov‐BiVO4@NiFe‐MOFs exhibits enhanced stability and a remarkable photocurrent density of 5.3±0.15 mA cm−2 at 1.23 V (vs. RHE). The reduced coordination number of Ni(Fe)‐O and elevated valence state of Ni(Fe) in NiFe‐MOFs layer greatly bolster OER, and the shifting of oxygen evolution sites from Ov‐BiVO4 to NiFe‐MOFs promotes Ov stabilization. Counts were read on 29 October 2026 and will not be updated on this page, so a quoted rank stays verifiable. Full rules on the methodology page.
