About the program

Wellcome’s Discovery Awards fund long, deep programmes — up to eight years — of curiosity-driven research with potential to improve human life, health and wellbeing. They replaced the older Investigator Awards as Wellcome’s flagship response to a known problem: transformative research rarely fits three-year project grants.

The scheme funds discovery science across the breadth of Wellcome’s remit (from molecules to populations, humanities and social science included). Applications run preliminary → full → interview, and the honest bar is track record: the scheme backs researchers with evidence they can lead an ambitious programme, at institutions in the UK, Ireland, or low- and middle-income countries per current rules.

Who can apply

  • Open to researchers with a substantial track record of leading independent research.
  • Host-location rules matter: recent policy admits institutions in the UK, Republic of Ireland, and low-/middle-income countries (high-income countries outside UK/RoI largely excluded) — verify against the current scheme page.
  • Team applications with co-applicants are supported.

Writing a competitive application

  • Pitch a programme, not a project chain: what coherent question needs eight years, and what does year eight know that year three cannot?
  • Wellcome explicitly welcomes risk — but wants the PI’s evidence of having navigated risk before.
  • The preliminary application is a hard filter; treat its few pages with full-proposal seriousness.

Frequently asked questions

Who is eligible for a Wellcome Discovery Award?
Researchers with an established independent track record, hosted at eligible organisations — under recent rules, in the UK, Republic of Ireland, or low- and middle-income countries. Career-stage-specific schemes (Early-Career and Career Development Awards) serve earlier stages.
How much funding can I request?
There is no published fixed cap — you justify the budget the programme needs for up to eight years, including team salaries and equipment. Multi-million-pound awards are the norm at full scale.
