About the program

Vetenskapsrådet’s project grant (projektbidrag) is Sweden’s core free-research funding: investigator-initiated projects in any field, funded on scientific quality through subject-area panels (natural/engineering sciences, medicine and health, humanities and social sciences, education, and more — each with its own call and sometimes its own dates).

The applicant is a person, but the grant is administered by a Swedish host (medelsförvaltare) — universities and approved institutes. Panels weigh the proposal and the PI’s recent track record together, and Swedish practice is transparent about it: the application form literally separates "research programme" from "merits", and both are scored.

Who can apply

  • PhD required — for many calls, awarded no more recently than a cutoff and with independence expected; starting grants exist separately for early-career applicants.
  • A Swedish administrating organisation must employ you (at least at grant start) and approve the application in Prisma.
  • One application per call type per round; check the specific call for area-level rules.

Writing a competitive application

  • Applications go through Prisma — get the personal account, CV and publication data in order weeks before the deadline; the form is unforgiving.
  • Panels are broad: write the research programme for a smart non-specialist in your area, with the international state of the art explicitly positioned.
  • The budget must map to activities; Swedish panels routinely trim unjustified positions.
  • If early-career, check the etableringsbidrag (starting grant) track instead — the windows and expectations differ.

Frequently asked questions

When are Vetenskapsrådet deadlines?
The main annual calls open in winter and close in spring — historically March–April for most subject areas — with some areas and special calls on their own schedules. Each call page on vr.se states the exact dates.
Can I apply without being employed in Sweden yet?
You need a Swedish administrating organisation that will employ you when the grant period starts and that approves your application — arrangements with a future employer are common, but the commitment must be real and documented in Prisma.
