About the program
CAREER is the NSF’s most prestigious early-career award: five years of support for pre-tenure faculty who propose to build a career-long integration of research and education. It is not "a grant with an outreach paragraph" — proposals are judged on a genuine education plan woven into the research, and reviewers are practiced at spotting bolted-on ones.
A researcher may submit to CAREER up to three times before tenure. The award is also a tenure-case signal, which is precisely why departments push for it and why the competition is intense: treat the integrated research-plus-education vision as the product, and expect to iterate across cycles.
Who can apply
- Tenure-track (or equivalent) assistant professor — untenured as of the deadline — at a US institution.
- Doctorate in an NSF-supported field; the proposal goes to the disciplinary program that fits the science.
- Maximum three CAREER submissions per person; only one active CAREER award ever.
- Department chair letter required — it certifies the position and the department’s support.
Writing a competitive application
- Integrate, don’t append: the strongest proposals make the education plan use the research (and vice versa) — undergraduates running the instrument, curricula built on the data, broadening-participation work tied to the lab’s actual community.
- Talk to the program officer before the summer deadline about fit; CAREER is reviewed within regular disciplinary programs.
- Write the five-year arc explicitly — reviewers fund trajectories, not projects, in this mechanism.
- Mine publicly posted funded CAREER proposals in your field (many awardees share them) for structure, not content.
