Kahubi vs Perplexity

Perplexity is one of the best ways to get a quick, sourced answer from the web, and many researchers use it every day. The question for a research project is different: where do the sources go after the answer, and how do they end up in your paper? Kahubi is built around that second part.

What Perplexity does well

Credit where it's due: these are real strengths, and for some workflows they are exactly what you need.

  • Very fast answers with numbered links to the pages it used, so you can check them
  • Good at current events, documentation and grey literature that academic indexes miss
  • An Academic source filter that leans toward scholarly sources
  • A clean interface that needs no setup

Where Kahubi differs

Scholarly sources first, then the web

Kahubi searches OpenAlex (250M+ scholarly works) and Semantic Scholar before anything else, and uses a European web index when you ask it to search the web. Papers it finds can be imported into your library with the PDF when an open-access version exists, so the source stays with your project instead of in a browser tab.

Answers from the full text of your own library

Perplexity answers from what it finds online. Kahubi also answers from the papers you have already collected: the agent searches your library, reads the full texts and cites the exact papers it used. That is the difference between "what does the web say" and "what do my 300 sources say".

From answer to manuscript

In Kahubi an answer can become a cited paragraph in your draft, formatted in APA, Vancouver or another style, inside a real LaTeX or Word manuscript with version history. Where your sources do not support a claim, the agent writes [CITATION NEEDED] instead of inventing a reference.

Methods, not only search

Systematic review screening with PRISMA numbers, statistics on your CSV files, interview transcription processed in the EU and thematic analysis all run in the same project. Perplexity is a search product; Kahubi is where the study gets done.

Kahubi vs Perplexity: common questions

Is Perplexity good for academic research?
For quick orientation and finding sources, yes. It cites its sources so you can check them. For a thesis or paper you also need a reference library, honest citations in a fixed style and a place to write. Kahubi combines scholarly search with those parts, so most researchers who use Perplexity for quick questions use a workspace like Kahubi for the project itself.
What is the best Perplexity alternative for researchers?
It depends on the job. For literature search with a library and a manuscript in the same place, Kahubi is built for exactly that. For pure paper discovery, tools like Elicit, Undermind or Consensus are strong. For general web answers, Perplexity remains very good.
Does Kahubi search the web like Perplexity?
Yes, when you ask it to. Kahubi uses Staan, a European search index, and sends only the search query. By default the agent prefers scholarly sources from OpenAlex and Semantic Scholar, because those are what a paper needs to cite.
Can I use both?
Yes. Many researchers use Perplexity for quick questions and Kahubi for the project. If Perplexity points you to a paper, ask Kahubi to find it by title and it will import it into your library, with the PDF when an open-access version exists.
