Kahubi vs Gemini

Gemini is a strong general assistant, and its Deep Research mode can produce long, sourced reports on almost any topic. For a research project the question is not whether the model is capable, but whether a general chat is the right place to keep your sources, data and manuscript. Here is an honest comparison.

What Gemini does well

Credit where it's due: these are real strengths, and for some workflows they are exactly what you need.

  • Long, sourced Deep Research reports that are a good starting point on a new topic
  • Tight integration with Google Docs, Gmail and Drive for people who live in Google Workspace
  • Very long context, so you can paste or upload large documents
  • Strong multimodal skills, including images and video

Where Kahubi differs

A report is a starting point; a study is a project

A Deep Research report is a one-off document. In Kahubi the same kind of question builds a library: papers are imported with their PDFs, you can screen them against inclusion criteria, and the agent cites them by name in your draft. Next month the sources are still there, organised and searchable.

Citations you can check, in your style

Kahubi cites only papers that actually exist in your library or that it fetched from OpenAlex and Semantic Scholar during the conversation. Citations are formatted in APA, Harvard, Vancouver or another style, and unsupported claims are marked [CITATION NEEDED] so nothing invented slips into a manuscript.

EU processing by default

Kahubi is run by Avidemic AB in Sweden. AI processing runs with European providers, interview audio is transcribed in the EU, and your content is never used to train models. For research data covered by an ethics approval, that is often the deciding factor.

Research methods that run

Statistics on your CSV files written up in APA format, interview transcription with speaker labels, thematic coding linked back to the transcript, and systematic review screening with PRISMA numbers. Gemini can explain these methods; Kahubi runs them on your data and puts the results in your draft.

Kahubi vs Gemini: common questions

Is Gemini Deep Research good enough for a literature review?
It is a useful first overview. A literature review for a thesis or journal needs a documented search, explicit inclusion criteria, every source read and checked, and citations in a fixed style. Kahubi’s systematic review flow handles those steps, and the EU living guidelines on generative AI in research say researchers stay responsible for checking every reference an AI produces.
Can I use Gemini with sensitive research data?
Check your institution’s agreement with Google first. Many universities allow some Google services and not others. Kahubi processes data with European providers, does not train on your content and transcribes interviews in the EU, which is what most ethics boards in Europe ask about.
Does Kahubi work with Google Docs?
Kahubi exports drafts as .docx, which opens in Google Docs, and as PDF or .tex. There is also a Kahubi add-in for Microsoft Word. Your library exports as BibTeX, RIS or CSL-JSON.
Which is cheaper?
Kahubi has a free plan with 25 AI messages a month and paid plans at $29, $59 and $109 per month. Check Google’s current Gemini plans on their site, since they change often.
